Third Year Extensions

Peace Corps policy (as delineated in the Peace Corps Manual Section 281, section 3) states that a, Volunteer whose continued service is desired by a host country may request permission to extend service by submitting a written request to the Country Director . . . . The Country Director shall consider the following factors in determining whether to grant an extension request: A Volunteer's unique importance to the total program and the overall benefit to the host country. The degree to which the Volunteer's supervisor and other host country officials support an extension. The Volunteer's motivation in seeking the extension. Medical approval from the Peace Corps Medical Officer. The previous conduct of the Volunteer. The quality of the Volunteer's service to date. The total time the Volunteer will have served as a result of the extension. Volunteers extending their service for 12 months or more are entitled to 30 days of special leave upon either the completion of the original term of service or 18 months of service, whichever is later. Your application to extend should be received at least two months prior to your scheduled COS date. For volunteers interested in extending in Burkina Faso, a decision will be made by the CD based on input from the APCD, PCMO, and other senior staff, in consideration of the above criteria as well as budget limitations and number of third year volunteer positions available. Peace Corps Manual Section 282, section 3, allows for transfers to another PC country. If you are interested in this alternative, your information will be reviewed by the APCD and senior staff and, if recommended by the CD, will be forwarded to Peace Corps/Washington for transmittal to other countries of interest. PCVs interested in this option should submit their information as soon as possible to maximize their opportunity of having another option available when they COS from Burkina. You should also be clear in your presentation as to whether remaining in Burkina is an option for you if an offer is not forthcoming from another post. All Volunteers interested in extending should submit to both their APCD and to the Country Director (dteschner@bf.peacecorps.gov) a Word document with answers to the following questions. Volunteers interested in transferring to another Peace Corps country should also attach an updated resume. Please understand that all applications will be carefully considered, but that extensions are NOT automatic, being subject to budget limitations, the number of positions available, and other applicable criteria.
