In Lecture 9/14/11 Commonly asked questionsBulk around 3 prim sources peer resource rest from 3 2ndary sources -how

do you tell its primary: research paper; skim article what is format Has--- 1.Experimental procedures, methods In Science / Nature- dont have a methods cuz small space need to see if there is a website 2. figures have raw data not cartoons; data heavy not just charts , etc Want article in pdf format not html on website ( there is a button to make it pdf) cuz html not formatted way the hard copy is (important for citation ex. Page numbers) Review article 2ndary----Discussions of peer reviewed articles no methods or procedure or actual data How to tell-says at top abstract intro then just subheading of a topic no methods etc, figures mostly summary, nothing indicating new data ----2ndary easier to understand than primary need bulk from primary 2ndary gives background for info and understanding page to 1 in half rest primary but start reading 2ndary source Reading Primary resource for 1st time---------------------( how Dr. Reedy reads) 1. 2. 3. 4. Skim abstract Read introduction for background maybe reviews on topic Skip method/ results and jump to comclusion/ discussion to see what the claim is When understand go to results/ method

If find something in intro that want to cite then need to go to actual source cuz its not their findings its what they used that you need to use can only talk about new findings they have in their articles Textbook is a secondary source but not counting as 1 of 6 but the extra in the 4 JUST SKIM STARTER ARTICLES to see it they have a topic you want ---one can count as a peer review source 1/6 3 primary articles must be very tightly linked to each other Do that by:

1. Find research paper by lab that you want to do a topic on and find more articles by that lab---can tell what lab did the work by going to authors list and see who corresponding author is they usu. Do labs on similar topic 2. Think of it as citation lab, those that are linked together because they are citing each other------best way to do citation path is to use Web of Science ( start with PubMed cuz easier to use get you going etc.)- can go through reference that library set up for us

Background reading and lots of narrowed down topic and 2 tightly linked articles and find a 3rd Outline sheet for how to do a bibliography thats it what they r looking for is how we will use are sources I-using sources . . . II using sources . . . just want to know that we know roughly were we are using our sources -the more detail the better the feedback Basically writing a mini. Review article just try to integrate 3 primary articles not talk about each seperately
