CHRISTIES ASIAN ART WEEK LONDON TOTALS 22.4 MILLION /US$35.8 MILLION
London - Christies leads the Asian art market, after concluding its Spring Asian Art Week in London with a combined total of 22.4 million (US$35.8 million / 28 million/HK$276.8 million) over four days of sales between 15th - 18th May 2012. Jonathan Stone, Chairman and International Head, Asian Art, said: The combined sales of Chinese Art at King Street and South Kensington with the two Japanese sales gave us market share overall for the week (59% against our nearest competitor for Asian Art in London). We also achieved market share in Chinese and Japanese collecting categories. The results for the Japanese single owner collection and Chinese works of art at South Kensington are particularly strong and consolidated with all four sales of the week demonstrate Christies dominance of the Asian Art market in Europe. Comment: Jeremy Morgan, Director, Head of Department, Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, Christies South Kensington: The importance of fresh to the market lots with impeccable provenance was evident in this sale which realised 5,491,738, the highest total for a May sale in this category at Christies South Kensington. From one of many private collections, the Sir William Seeds KCME Collection, both a rare ivory ruyi scepter (lot 1191) and a fine zitan altar table (lot 1195) both sold for 181,250. Further collections offering small white jade pendants, fine porcelains and works of art, also created excitement in the packed saleroom from the beginning to the end.
