CHRISTIES ASIAN ART WEEK LONDON TOTALS 22.4 MILLION /US$35.8 MILLION
London - Christies leads the Asian art market, after concluding its Spring Asian Art Week in London with a combined total of 22.4 million (US$35.8 million / 28 million/HK$276.8 million) over four days of sales between 15th - 18th May 2012. Jonathan Stone, Chairman and International Head, Asian Art, said: The combined sales of Chinese Art at King Street and South Kensington with the two Japanese sales gave us market share overall for the week (59% against our nearest competitor for Asian Art in London). We also achieved market share in Chinese and Japanese collecting categories. The results for the Japanese single owner collection and Chinese works of art at South Kensington are particularly strong and consolidated with all four sales of the week demonstrate Christies dominance of the Asian Art market in Europe. Comment: Jeremy Morgan, Director, Head of Department, Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, Christies South Kensington: The importance of fresh to the market lots with impeccable provenance was evident in this sale which realised 5,491,738, the highest total for a May sale in this category at Christies South Kensington. From one of many private collections, the Sir William Seeds KCME Collection, both a rare ivory ruyi scepter (lot 1191) and a fine zitan altar table (lot 1195) both sold for 181,250. Further collections offering small white jade pendants, fine porcelains and works of art, also created excitement in the packed saleroom from the beginning to the end. Comment: Anastasia von Seibold, Head of Sale, Japanese Art: This dynamic collection of Meiji art formed over 30 years drew extensive numbers of new international clients into the category, resulting in this exceptional total. One of the largest important Meiji private collections to come to the market in London in the last three decades, the consistent quality is reflected by the Hayashi vase which set a new auction record for this workshop, realising 217,250. Mark Hinton, International Head of Japanese Art: We are very pleased that the continued steady growth of sales for this field at Christies South Kensington over the last three years has led to these May sales securing market share in London. Comment: Anastasia von Seibold, Head of Sale, Japanese Art: This is the highest auction total for a various owner sale in this category at Christies South Kensington to date, highlighting new vigour in the 17th century Japanese ceramics market. A recently discovered pair of Kakiemon tigers, the Property of a Lady and formerly in an Aristocratic European Collection, attracted competitive bidding and an exceptional price for these delightful creatures. This sale continues to highlight that the market seeks out fine privately sourced Japanese works of art. Press Contact: Hannah Schweiger +44 (0)20 7389 2964 hschweiger@christies.com

Comment: Pedram Rasti, Head of Department, Christies London: This sale was led by the cover lot, a pair of Imperial famille rose vases, which realised 1,273,250. This strong price reflects the demand for Imperial ceramics from the Qing period in particular. In the field of works of art we saw competitive bidding for the Imperial bronze altar vases which sold for 657,250, again highlighting the interest in Imperial works.
