BASIC STUDENT SERVICES COMMITTEE PROPOSAL

Rationale:
The Basic Student Services Committee plays an important role in ensuring that the students of the university will have a meaningful and memorable stay in the university. A meaningful and memorable stay in the university will be possible if the University Student Council will create activities that will bring wholistic development for the students, an atmosphere of security and representation to address their welfare. The Basic Student Services committee encompasses concerns that address the needs of the students not only academically but also physically and emotionally.

Vision Mission:
The Basic Student Services Committee will be the necessary vehicle for the University Student Council to help the students excel as an academe, grow as a leader and serve as an iskolar ng bayan. The committee will be at the forefront of campaigns to address the issues of the students as regards the different basic services that they need.

Objectives:
To create an atmosphere for the students where they will have a HOLISTIC GROWTH as an Iskolar ng Bayan To ensure STUDENT REPRESENTATION AND CONSULTATION in all rule-making bodies in the university that concerns basic student services To increase STUDENT AWARENESS of the opportunities that the university is offering them To create activities that will RAISE FUNDS for the needs of the different dormitories and services in the University

Duties and Obligations:


Chairperson: 1. The chairperson shall convene and preside the meetings of the members of the committee; 2. The chairperson shall be in-charge of directing and overseeing the activities of the committee; 3. The chairperson shall sign all communications and official papers of the committee; 4. The chairperson shall report to and update the University Student Council members of the activities and developments in the Basic Student Services Committee Secretary: 1. The secretary shall record the minutes of the meeting. Such minutes of the meeting shall be handed to the committee chairperson within a week after the meeting; 2. The secretary shall keep all the official papers and documents of the committee. Dormitory Representative: 1. The dormitory representative must be a resident in any of the residence halls of the University; 2. The dormitory representative shall help the chairperson coordinate with the Office of Student Housing; 3. The dormitory representative shall gather all the relevant statistics of each dormitory every semester and such statistical findings shall be submitted to the secretary of the committee; 4. The dormitory representative shall update the committee of the activities of the different dormitories. 5. The dormitory representative shall help the chairperson implement all the activities of the committee as regards the welfare of the students living in the residence halls of the University. Loans and Scholarship Representative: 1. The loan and scholarship representative shall help the chairperson in coordinating with the Office of Scholarship and Student Services; 2. The loan and scholarship representative shall gather all the relevant statistics, issues and developments of the scholarships and loans available for the student; 3. The loan and scholarship representative shall disseminate the information on the available scholarships and loans to different colleges and dormitories; 4. The loan and scholarship representative may take on other responsibilities delegated to him by the chairperson in connection with any activity for the scholarship and student services. Health and Food Service Representative: 1. The health and food service representative shall help the chairperson in coordinating with the University Food Service; 2. The health and food service representative shall update the committee on all the pertinent issues and problems that the University Food Service is facing; 3. The health and food service representative may take on other responsibilities delegated to him by the chairperson in connection with any activity for the health and food service. Counseling Representative: 1. The counselling representative shall help the chairperson in coordinating with the Office of Counseling and Guidance.

2. The counselling representative shall coordinate and disseminate the schedule of the guidance counsellors with different colleges. 3. The counselling representative may take on other responsibilities delegated to him by the chairperson in connection with any activity for the counselling and guidance services. Tutorials and Learning Representative: 1. The tutorials and learning representative shall help the chairperson in coordinating with the DOST Core Group and Diliman Learning Resource Center. 2. The tutorials and learning representative shall gather all the available tutorials and resources and disseminate it to different colleges; 3. The tutorials and learning representative may take on other responsibilities delegated to him by the chairperson in connection with any activity for the tutorials and learning services.

Activities: HOLISTIC GROWTH


DORMERS MONTH Vision Mission: Foster good inter-dormitory relationship through different activities planned and spearheaded by each dormitory Objectives: To partner with the Alliance of Concerned Dormitories to create activities that will bring a close relationship to the residents of different dormitories To partner with the dormitories that are not part of the Alliance of Concerned Dormitories to participate in all the activities To strengthen unity of the residents of the residence halls through fun activities Activity Design: Time: January 21- February 15, 2013 Venue: Different Venues in UP Audience: All Dormers Estimated Budget: 1. Lecture Series Goal: To make each dormitory present a lecture at an assigned for that week wherein the audience will be composed of the dormers from the different residence halls. The lecture will be a mixture of academic, fun and interesting topics. Point basis: attendance Date: January 21 January 25, 2013 2. Karaoke Night Goal: Have a series of fun-filled activities in a week set in different dormitories. Point basis: Karaoke score Date: February 1, 2013

3. Dormers Outreach Program Goal: To coordinate all the residence halls to spearhead an outreach activity Date: February 2, 2013 4. Dormers Next Top Model Goal: To foster unity within a dorm by helping their representatives win the competition through their creativity and diligence Date: January 21- February 15, 2013 Rule: 1. Each residence hall will choose their representatives, 1 boy and 1 girl. 2. Each week, the representatives will be given tasks to perform which they should accomplish. 3. The points will be the accumulation of FB votes, points earned from tasks. Tasks include but not limited to, collecting pet bottles, newspapers or scratch papers, attending the different activities of the dormers month, etc. 4. Each week, the 2 boys and the 2 girls with the lowest votes will be eliminated. 5. This will continue until only the final pair remains. 5. Date with a Dormer/Culminating Party Goal: To organize a week-end party for the dormers where there will be a bidding of the Dormers Next Top Model Contestants so they can be taken out on a date. All proceeds will be allocated for the dormitory improvement. Date: February 16, 2013 TUTORIAL PROGRAM Vision-Mission: To provide a venue for the academic growth of the students through tutorial and mentoring program Objective: To partner with DLRC and DOST Core Group to conduct tutorial session and mentoring programs for the students in the university. To ask the help of different college councils to conduct review sessions on certain subjects for the university students Activity Design: The committee will partner with DLRC, DOST Core Group, different organizations and college councils to conduct review sessions in different subjects especially during midterms and finals. A one-on-one mentoring program will be given for those who are in special need to pass the subjects. Date: All Year Venue: Anywhere in the university

STUDENT REPRESENTATION AND CONSULTATION


DORMITORY OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE REACTIVATION Vision Mission: To forward the reactivation of the Dormitory Oversight Committee under the Office of the ViceChancellor on Student Affairs. Objectives: To lobby to the Office of the Vice-Chancellor on Student Affairs to return the Dormitory Oversight Committee To ensure that the Dormitory Oversight Committee will have one representative from the students Activity Design: the committee will continuously consult with the Office of the Vice-Chancellor on Student Affairs to reactivate the Dormitory Oversight Committee so that the students will be properly consulted about dormitory admission process and resolve necessary issues that must be addressed, i.e. security, facilities Time: All year round Venue: OVCSA D-SPEAK (Dormers Speak) Vision-Mission: To bridge the dormers concerns to the proper offices in the University at the fastest time possible Objectives: To engage the dormers through surveys and suggestion boxes to air out their concerns and suggestions to improve how the residence halls are being managed. Activity Design: The Basic Student Services Committee will use all the available means to get the pulse of the students on how their dormitories are being managed and how good the facilities are. This will then be compiled and submitted to the Office of Student Housing for immediate response. The committee will be at the forefront of coordinating with the Office to address the issues of security in the dormitories, especially the female dormitories. Date: Mid-semester, End of Semester

STUDENT AWARENESS
FRESHMEN DORMERS WEEK Vision Mission: To provide opportunities for freshmen to know more about university life and how they will adjust, cope and excel under these conditions and circumstances. Objectives: To partner with the Office of Guidance and Counseling to guide the freshmen in starting with the University life and advising them on the issues and problems that they are going to face To partner with the University Health Service to inform the freshmen of the available medical services that they may avail of as students

To ask the help of the Diliman Learning Resource Center and DOST Core Group to offer academic help and tutorials to freshmen Activity Design: There will be an orientation for the whole week to immerse the freshmen in the UP culture and teach them how to deal with the fast-paced but very exciting University life. Date: June17 June 22, 2012, 7pm to 10pm Venue: Kalayaan Residence Hall Attendees: All freshmen dormers STUDENTS HANDBOOK OF OPPORTUNITIES (SHOP) Vision-Mission: To increase the awareness of the students as regards all the services and opportunities that they may avail in the university. Objectives: To ask the Office of Scholarship and Student Services to provide information on all the scholarships for the students To ask the University Student Housing to provide a comprehensive list of services that they provide the students of the university To coordinate with the Diliman Learning Resource Center and DOST Core Group the available tutorials and resources that they could provide the students To coordinate with the Office of Guidance and Counseling their schedule to accommodate students for counselling and advising To consolidate all the gathered information regarding student services in one handbook To partner with different college councils to disseminate the handbooks to all freshmen and transferees in the university Activity Design: Date: June 15, 2012 Venue: Different Colleges Audience/Recipient: Freshmen STUDENT HANDBOOK OF OPPORTUNITIES CARAVAN VERSION Vision-Mission: To reach out to all the students of the university in informing them of all the available services and opportunities that they may avail of. Objectives: To turn the student handbook of opportunities into a bulletin board version that will be displayed in the lobby of different colleges To coordinate with different colleges to display the bulletin board in their lobby or hallway with the most traffic Activity Design: Date: June 24 July 20, 2012 Venue: CSSP lobby, CAL lobby, CS lobby, Engg lobby Audience: All students of the university

FOOD KO TO CAMPAIGN Vision-Mission: To reinvigorate the University Food Service through greater funds from the university and patronization of students Objectives: To know the issues faced by the University Food Service and how this could be addressed Increased promotion of the University Food Service to the students to get more students to eat there Activity Design: The committee will create campaign materials to promote the University Food Service so more students will come to eat. This will be simultaneously done with talking to UP officials to increase the budget of the UFS and address the concerns. Date: All Year Venue: UFS SCHOLARSHIP DRIVE Vision-Mission: To give students the opportunity to apply for scholarships both here and abroad. Objective: In close coordination to the Special Events Committee, the BSS Committee will spearhead a scholarship fair for the students Activity Design: The committee will gather all the available scholarship offered by the universities, private companies and the government to the students of UP, whether undergraduate or graduate, both here and abroad. It will utilize all available forms of media to disseminate the information. The committee will also accommodate questions from the students who are interested in the scholarship. Date: July- August 2012 USC- BSS CORNER Vision-Mission: To keep the students updated with different activities, campaigns and issues of the USC and BSS Committee Objective: To partner with different student councils and residence halls to provide a space for the USC in their bulletin boards to post announcements.

RAISE FUNDS
JUANTED BACK Vision-Mission: To gather different organizations and residence halls to organize activities that foster volunteerism and nationalism To create an event that will gather funds for the residence halls in the university

Objective: To get the support of different organizations to promote the importance of volunteerism and nationalism To raise funds for the improvement of the residence halls, university food service and other student facilities in UP. Activity Design: A series of activities will be done throughout the university to promote volunteerism and nationalism. This will be culminated by a concert and the proceeds will go to the improvement of student services. Date: December 12, 2012 Venue: Sunken Garden UNIVERSITY LIFESTYLE PLANNER Vision-Mission: To organize a fund-raising activity for the dormitories while appreciating love for the university Objective: Produce an organizer that is very tatak UP. It will showcase the UP culture, places and trivias. All the proceeds will go for the renovation of the dormitories. Activity Design: The planner will be released to increase appreciation for the university. The planner will both be creative but very informative for the students. Date: January 2013
