stations
> available in single-panel designs
and extensible designs especially
suited to installation in windpower-
stations
> complies with lEC, EN, GOST and
China National Standards (CNS)
Advantages
> Economic, space-saving design
> Extensible or non-extensible, to
suit your requirements

Automated stations
With its modular concept and options
including motorized switching devi-
ces and remote control modules,
FBX is especially well-suited lor the
increasing automation ol secondary
distribution networks.
To enable communication with
power system control centres, FBX
provides various project stages with
solutions integrated in the switchge-
ar. All versions - lrom remote-signal-
ling only to remote control and re-
transmission ol additional signals
lrom the substation - are possible.
For automated power system opera-
tion, FBX can be managed lrom the
remote control station by motor con-
trol and electrically via the micro
remote control module.
Modern communication techniques,
including modem solutions lor tele-
phone lines, radio or GSM can be
incorporated.
Fields of application
The FBX ring main units are used in
non-accessible or in walk-in stations
belonging to the public power sup-
ply companies, ol industry, inlra-
structure and windpower stations.

B
FBX - Straightforward
planning
The FBX is a gas-insulated three-
pole enclosed switchgear system
lor secondary distribution. SF
6
gas is
used as the insulating medium. The
gas-lilled, clad compartments ol FBX
are insensitive to environmental
inlluences such as humidity, dust,
dirt and vermin, and allord maximum
operator salety.
FBX-C switchgear is available as
classical non-extensible ring main
units, with 2 to 4 switching units.
FBX-E is the extensible version,
with 1 to 4 switching units, which
are arranged in a common gas-lilled,
clad compartment. The lunctional
units ol FBX-E can be arranged in
any order, without gas handling, to
lorm the required multi-panel switch-
gear arrangement.
FBX-E in-line technology ollers the
lollowing advantages:
>very cost-ellective solution lor
secondary distribution applications.
>Can be installed lrom the outside
through very small access ope-
nings and hatches, e.g. lor installa-
tion in cellars or on upper lloors, or
inside windpower stations.
>FBX-E modules can be aligned in
any order.
>Subsequent expansion is possible
on both sides ol the switchgear.
>lnstallation at the construction site
with no gas handling.
Both FBX-C (non-extensible) and
FBX-E (extensible) versions can be
equipped with
- circuit-breakers (C),
- switch luse combinations (T1),
- Translormer outgoing leeders with
vacuum circuit-breakers (T2) lor
high-capacity distribution translor-
mers or outgoing leeders up to
400/630A
- busbar risers (P)
- busbar risers with earth switches
(PE), help provide a very cost-
ellective solution to the require-
ments ol secondary distribution
network engineering. FBX-M air-
insulated metering panels with
conventional currentand voltage
translormers lor medium-voltage
billing metering complete this
range ol products.
The clear overall design ol the FBX
switchgear range ensures straight-
lorward, reliable operation. A con-
tinuous zero-lorce interlocking
concept prevents operator errors.
The generous space ol the cable
connection compartments allows
the use ol various cable connection
systems lor outer cone-type appli-
ance couplers to EN 50181.
p to 2x3 cable Tee screw-type
plugs or 3 cable Tee screw-type
plugs plus 3 surge arresters per
outgoing leeder can be installed
within the standard switchgear
prolile. FBX-F, exIensible

Outgoing feeder cable with
switch disconnector,
version C
The three-pole switching units are
located in the gas-lilled, clad com-
partment. The power lrom the exter-
nal drive mechanisms is transmitted
directly to the switching devices.
The three-position switch leatures a
make-break snap-action mechanism
lor the switch disconnector lunction
and a separate snap-action making
mechanism lor the earth switch
lunction.
Transformer outgoing feeder
with switch fuse combina-
tion, version T1
Switch luse combinations comply
with lEC 622?1-105. The combina-
tion consists ol a three-position
switch disconnector, gas-prool loca-
ting tubes lor the Hv HPC luse links
and additional earth switches on the
cable connection end to ensure
maximum operator salety.
To lacilitate replacement ol the
Hv HPC luses, earthing is always
provided upstream and downstream
ol the luses. The two earth switches
are mechanically coupled and are
operated via a single drive.
The switch disconnector is equipped
with a snap-action mechanism lor
making operations, and a stored-
energy mechanism lor breaking ope-
rations. The stored-energy mecha-
nism is mechanically pre-charged to
prepare lor a breaking operation. ll
the striker ol an Hv HPC luse link
operates, the switch disconnector is
switched-oll mechanically on all
three poles. ln addition, a breaking
operation triggered by the tripping
ol any ol the Hv HPC luse link
strikers is displayed mechanically on
the lront operating panel. Breaking
via a magnetic trip is also possible.
The Earth ON lunction is achieved
via a separate drive with a
snap-action making mechanism.

1D
Transformer outgoing feeder
with vacuum circuit-breaker,
version T2
The translormer outgoing leeder with
a vacuum circuit-breaker, version T2,
can be used on applications where
the load current is too high to use a
switch luse combination. A typical
application is the protection ol distri-
bution translormers and windpower
=13.8 MvA or 6000 kvA (lor 20 kv)
using a vacuum circuit breaker and a
combination ol three current trans-
lormers and a current translormer
operated protection relay. Operation
and tripping on laults does not
require an additional auxiliary supply.
The vacuum circuit-breaker, version
T2, is also a cost-ellective solution
lor the selective transler at the medi-
um-voltage point between a regional
operating agency and a customer's
switchgear.
The T2 translormer outgoing leeder
consists ol the three-pole switching
units, a vacuum circuit-breaker loca-
ted upstream ol the three-position
switch, and an integrated outgoing
leeder switch on the cable end. The
disconnector is operated via the
snap-action make/break mechanism.
The make-prool earth switch is ope-
rated via a snap-action making
mechanism.
Currents is detected via three
toroidal-core current translormers.
ln the event ol an external lault, the
vacuum circuit-breaker is switched
oll via the current translormer actua-
ted protection relay.
The drive lunctions ol the vacuum
circuit-breaker outgoing leeder T2
are identical in design to those ol
the switch luse combination T1.
The operating sequence when a
motor-operated drive mechanism is
provided is: 0 - 3 min - CO.
The vacuum circuit-breaker outgoing
leeder has been designed with
ratings ol 400 A and 630 A. lt is
designed to switch 1000 times the
rated normal current. 50 short-circuit
breaking operations are possible up
to a maximum lault rating ol 20 kA.
The vacuum circuit-breaker leatures
a snap-action making mechanism
and a stored-energy breaking
mechanism.
The stored-energy mechanism is
mechanically pre-charged to ensure
it is always ready lor a breaking ope-
ration. Electrical breaking when trip-
ped by a protection relay is ellected
via a dedicated translormer-operated
release. The toroidal-core current
translormer, the three-phase trans-
lormer-operated WlC1 protection
relay1) and the magnetic trip lor
switching oll the vacuum circuit-
breaker all have matching lunctions.
For lurther details regarding the
WlC1-2P protection relay, please
reler to the separate documents lor
this relay.

WlC1 PRCTECTlCM RELAY
Combining a compact protection
relay and a toroidal-core current
translormer, the WlC1 system was
specilically developed lor compact
medium-voltage switchgear with
integrated circuit-breakers.
The lollowing protection lunctions
are incorporated in the WlC1:
> 3-phase delinite-time overcurrent
and short-circuit protection with
variable tripping times
> 3-phase overcurrent protection
with selectable inverse time cha-
racteristics and delinite-time
short-circuit current element
> Earth-lault protection
> ANSl codes
- 50/51
- 50N/51N
ln WlC1, the phase current is map-
ped by lorming the arithmetic mean.
The earth current is calculated lrom
the three phase currents.

achieved.
The minimum tripping time when
switched on a lault varies with the
lault current level.
With the type WlC 1-2P, setting ol
parameters is ellected via DlP swit-
ches. The appropriate toroidal-core
current translormers are wide-range
current translormers whose data is
matched to the protection relay
WlC1 which is actuated by the
translormer current. These wide-
range current translormers are avai-
lable in lour versions.

conligurations ol switchgear lor
secondary distribution applications.
Functional units comprising up to lour
switching units can be lined up in any
order. ln-line connection is possible
on both sides.
Local assembly and in-line connec-
tion ol FBX-E does not require gas
handling.
ln-line connection is a very straight-
lorward process due to
- the F-link busbar couplers on the
medium-voltage end.
variations between adjacent
panels are compensated by sphe-
rical lixed contacts and movable
couplers allowing adjustment in all
axial directions;
- very sale dielectric seals with
potential-controlled silicone
dellectors externally earthed and
adjustable to lit.
These are a press-lit on to the in-
line assembly, using a specilied
lorce. Potential-controlled blanking
plugs, with a design based on the
the F-link silicon dellectors, are
located at the switchgear ends.
These blanking plugs are held in
position, at the press-litting lorce,
by a common metal cover:
- integrated guide pins lor alignment
ol adjacent panels in a delined
position;
- panel screw couplings with clearly
lixed stoppers lor the distances
between adjacent panels;

A high-resistance (HP) voltage
detection system (not integrated) to
lEC 61243-5 and EN 61243-5, is
used to check zero voltage ol the
outgoing leeders. The multi-way
connectors lor the voltage indicators
are located in the secondary systems
recess. The indicators supplied as
standard are vDS systems (Horst-
mann).
Optionally, the lvlS integrated vol-
tage Detecting System with integra-
ted indicator can be used to check
zero voltage. Logic llash arrow sym-
bols on the indicators display il a
mains voltage within the delined
response thresholds is present. The
lvlS system does not require the
electrical repeat tests lor voltage
detection systems.
The lvlS system has been designed
lor maximum operating reliability. lt
does not require a supply lrom an
external source. lt leatures climate-
prool encapsulated electronics and
is maintenance-lree, because ol the
permanent monitoring ol indication

Short-circuit indicator
As an option, the outgoing cable
leeders, C, can be equipped with
short-circuit indicators, types Alpha
M or E, optional F or Gamma manu-
lactured by Dipl.-lng. H. Horstmann
GmbH. Other brands are available
on request.
The short-circuit indicators can be
set as lollows, depending on the
type concerned:
> Pesponse values:
400 / 600 / 800 / 1000 A
> Manual reset
> Automatic reset alter 2 or 4 hours
> Pemote signalling contact
> Earth-lault detection
The magnet yokes acting as sensors
lor the Horstmann short-circuit indi-
cators are installed on the outer
cone-type cable bushings.
Petrolitting ol short-circuit indicator
units is possible at any time.
GAS CCNPARTNEMT
TECMMCLCGY
The switching units are installed in
gas-lilled tanks made ol corrosion
prool chromium-nickel steel. SF

is
used as the insulating and quen-
ching medium. FBX is a sealed pres-
sure system to lEC 60694.
During the service lile ol the switch-
gear, it is not necessary to replenish
the SF

gas. The gas pressure is
indicated via a pressure gauge.
ln the event ol excess pressure, the
gas-lilled, clad compartment dis-
charges downwards via a pressure
reliel device, to prevent any hot

The switchgear satislies to a high
degree the ecological requirements
in respect ol environmental protec-
tion thanks to
> optimization ol material and energy
consumption during manulacture
> compliance with all ecological
requirements during its service lile
> the use ol recyclable materials lor
ellicient disposal at the end ol its
service lile.
Our design directive regarding en-
vironmentally compatible design
specilies the use ol materials which
can be dismantled and are easily
recyclable. The metals which lorm
approximately 90 % ol the switch-
gear are easily recyclable. They can
be 100 % recycled as new metal
components at the end ol their
service lile.
Plastics can also be recycled. The
thermosetting plastics can be lrag-
mented and reused as lillers in other
plastic components; the thermopla-
stic materials can be recycled in new
plastic components. This means that
the material is recovered, processed
and re-used in the manulacture ol
new parts.
To ensure ellicient and environmen-
tally lriendly dismantling and sorting
ol materials by responsible disposal
experts, all plastic components are
identilied accordingly. Moreover,
material and utilization data sheets
are available to provide the customer
with an overview about the materials
used, and the disposal company with
important inlormation regarding the
recycling process.
Thus, the materials used lor our pro-
ducts can be 100 % recycled.
This provides a vital contribution to
savings in global primary energy and
material resources.
All materials were selected and
developed so that, lor example,
switchgear allected by a lire in a
building would have a minimal ellect
on the lire load (heat development
and pollutants in the emissions).
Another important ecological aspect
is the longevity ol our products
(approx. 30 years), which is an ex-
tremely long service lile compared
to other capital goods. Also, the
FBX switchgear units have been
designed to require little mainten-
ance, giving lurther energy and
material savings, and to enable
straightlorward replacement ol com-
ponent parts, e.g. il new controllers
have been developed (upgrading).
The high-voltage conducting parts ol
our gas-insulated switchgear units
are hermetically sealed in an insula-
ting inert gas (sulphur hexalluoride
SF
6
which is neither reactive nor
toxic). Thus, all environmental inllu-
ences which could reduce the ser-
vice lile are kept outside. The parti-
cular characteristic ol the insulating
gas also enables the overall size to
be decreased by approximately 30 %
compared to switchgear without
insulating gas designed with equiva-
lent technical characteristics. This
again saves on material and saves
on the energy required to produce
the material.
The amountol insulating gas used in
GMA is approx. 0.5 % ol the total
weight ol the switchgear. Once the
switchgear's service lile has ended,
the gas can e completely extracted
via the disposal valve provided in
each gas-lilled compartment, and
then recycled. To this end, the gas
suppliers have developed an ellicient
recycling method.
ln normal operation, the gas need
never be replenished during the
entire service lile. The switchgear
has been designed as a hermetically
sealed pressure system according
to lEC 60694 and EN 60694.
