SIERRA LEONE – POVERTY IN GLANCE

Poverty in Sierra Leone is widespread and deep. In most districts,

incidence and severity of poverty is relatively higher in the rural areas
than in the urban areas. Poverty in the rural areas can be mainly
attributed to: (i) the wide gap in the availability of social services
(health, education, safe water and sanitation) between the urban and
rural areas; (ii) lack of agricultural inputs, market access and low
incomes from the sale of produce; (iii) weak infrastructure (bad road
networks, lack of storage facilities); (iv) lack of economic and
employment opportunities; (v) devastation by the war; and (vi) social
barriers such as large family size within the rural communities. Main
poverty indicators are insufficient food, poor housing, poor health, and
high infant and maternal mortality, high illiteracy, limited access to
clean water, and lack of money.

The ten years civil war had compounded further the adverse legacies
from long periods of economic decline and mismanagement, including
deteriorated capacity and weak institutions. Poverty has, therefore,
become pervasive and intensified, as economic and especially
agricultural output has continued to decline, leading to drastic negative
effects on food prices and rural incomes. During the conflict, most of the
health and other social sector support systems were destroyed and the
health status of the population deteriorated dramatically. Sierra Leone
need humanitarian help.
