Spinner Direct-Snap Double Wing

Adding the Spinner Cat:

Adding the Spinner Cat was as easy as a transition as adding the Wildcat package. It has worked so well that I see no reason to run the base Wildcat package. They are virtually alike, but the spin does so much more for the offense. The spinning backs combined with the motion and lots of Criss-Cross action in the backfield add up to a defensive nightmare. The footwork takes a minimal amount of time to perfect and will become second nature in a matter of days. With our center injured and out for at least a week we were forced to make some changes. Furthermore, our backups at center performed a standard snap so slow we knew we would be lucky to get a play off. The Wildcat snap is so easy to perform that we knew we could put anyone there and run it successfully. A simple flick of the wrist and the ball was put into play. All we asked of center was to make a blind snap, keeping it low and soft. The back getting the ball would simply reach out and intercept the snap. We introduced the Spinner Cat on a Monday and ran it the entire game that Saturday. The defense really had its hands full as they were forced to guess who had the ball the entire game.

Alignment:
Aligning in the Wildcat will literally take a few seconds to learn. The B back will simply take a half-step to his right and the QB will align adjacent to the B back. Both backs will split the center evenly and align as close together as possible. The rest of the offense keeps their normal alignment.

Teaching the Spin:

Teaching the spin is probably the easiest part of implementing the offense. At first, my fellow assistant coaches told me it would be too tough for our players to learn. With a bad back and knees I did the spin in one easy motion. All it takes is placing the weight on the outside heel and spinning. I really cannot stress how easy it is to do, but people will always find ways to make things more difficult. So, I had a back who proclaimed that he couldnt make the spin. He felt like he might fall. I simply told him to make the spin in the most comfortable manner possible. He ended up doing the spin in two steps as opposed to the heel spin. A couple of quarterbacks felt it was easier to just do the same footwork that they did on Power from our base Double Wing set, albeit a bit tighter. The bottom line is that spin on the outside heel is easier and more effective, but if doing it another way makes a player feel more comfortable than by all means.

Teaching the Snap:

The Wildcat snap is as easy to learn as the alignment. The center just needs to remember to keep it soft, low, slow and down the middle. The ball carrier is taking the ball so the center does not need to snap it in either direction. We took Hugh Wyatt literally when he said you could roll the snap back on the ground. This was scrapped a few weeks later when an opposing coach told the referees it was against the rules. He cited the rule book where it states that a team may not snap the ball in a manner in which it is a planned fumble in the vicinity of the snapper. This rule was actually put in place to ban the fumblerooski. We were pretty aggravated that game, but the quicker off the ground snap helped with the timing of the offense. The quick hitting Wildcat ended being huge for us three weeks later when we won our second consecutive state championship. Our sophomore B back had the majority of the carries out of the Wildcat and was named Most Valuable Player. Our opening offensive drive chewed up all but :51 of the opening quarter. Every time we needed that crucial first down the Wildcat was there. The opposing team was limited to just seven offensive plays in the first half.

Plays to Run:
Pretty much anything you can run out of the Double Wing you can run out of the Spinner. However, like the base Double Wing it is best keep it simple. The Spinner usually works best with motion in one direction, with the same CTXX action at all times. It is advantageous to do so for three reasons. First, the backfield gets continuous reps with the same action. Second, the defense really does get lulled to sleep. Finally, we usually have our QB on the left and we want him doing the majority of the handing off and passing. The Spinner more so than the base Double Wing can be tinkered with to fit your personnel If you have two stud B backs, then why not have them in the backfield together? Personally, I do not care for passing the ball, but I have gone with two Quarterbacks. It can give the defense fits. A base Spinner Cat package would consist of the following plays (not mirrored): Rip 66X Rip 67 CTXX Rip 6GX Rip 7GX Rip 2 Wedge X Rip Red-Red These six plays should be more than adequate to run the Spinner successfully, but of course there is so much more you can run.
