PIAB offers you all the possibilities

The PIAB mission is to be a global leader in industrial vacuum technology and, with innovative solutions, improve the productivity and working environment of vacuum users around the world.
Since its start in 1951, PIAB has been at the forefront in vacuum technology. Our products and systems continuously open up new paths to new possibilities. The products increase the productivity in automated material handling and production processes in most of the worlds countries.

The first PIAB product was a pair of compasses that simplified the work of designers and draftsmen. This pair of compasses has given the company its name. Pi (=3.14) AB.

In 1972 PIAB introduced the patented multistage ejector that still is the guiding-star for many companies in the industry.

The first USDA accepted pneumatic vacuum conveyor was launched in the year 2000. The conveyor meets the requirements of the food industry.

PIABs latest patent: The COAX technology a further development of the multistage ejector principle that offers new possibilities of customization and integration.

PIAB vacuum conveying increases your productivity

Safety
When noxious materials cannot be allowed to leak out into the environment of production. When the material that is conveyed is sensitive and cannot withstand external effects. That is when you choose PIAB. The whole chain of conveying takes place in a closed system, and therefore there is no leakage of dust. Besides this, the operators are not subjected to heavy lifting but can enjoy working in a noise-free environment. A favourable working environment contributes to increased productivity.

Simplicity
We build our conveyors so that they simplify your work. They are easy to disassemble and assemble when cleaning them. They have no crevices or pockets where powder can accumulate. The surfaces are easy to visually inspect. Quick inspection and cleaning increases your productivity.

Reliability
The vacuum conveyor has few moving parts. It is only the bottom flap that opens for emptying of powder. The vacuum pump has no moving parts at all. And through this the need of service and spare parts is minimal and the operational reliability maximum. Low costs for service and spare parts increase your productivity.

Economy
Faster conveying with higher capacity and, at the same time, lower energy consumption. That is the result of PIABs development work. By using PIABs vacuum conveyors you can lower your energy costs even further. Low energy consumption leads to increased productivity.

Operational reliability
The conveyors are designed to last. There is a built-in quality that guarantees long and problem-free operation. The risk for a stoppage in your production is non-existent. High reliability without unnecessary production stoppages increases your productivity.

Efficiency
We have made comparisons with traditional compressed air-driven vacuum conveyors. The result shows that PIABs new conveyors, C21, C33 and C56, display a strongly increased capacity at the same level of energy consumption. When conveying wheat flour, for example, the capacity was increased by approximately 2040 per cent. Faster conveying of larger volumes increases your productivity.

Hygiene
USDA and 3-A are the finest proofs of quality that you can expect to obtain. This proof is attached to a series of PIABs vacuum conveyors. USDA and 3-A have extremely stringent hygienic requirements of process equipment used in the food industry. (Please read more about it on page 18 in this brochure.) PIABs equipment has first-rate hygienic characteristics.

Quality
PIAB meets the stringent requirements of the food and pharmaceutical industries by making it possible for our customers to build the quality into their manufacturing process instead of strictly checking the end-product. Thinking of quality from start to goal increases your productivity.

A

The principle of PIAB Vacuum Conveying is as simple as it is ingenious

D 1. Vacuum is created by a compressed air-driven PIAB vacuum pump. (A) The pump has no rotating parts, is easy to control and thus needs no maintenance. 2. The bottom valve (B) closes, and under-pressure is created in the powder container (C) and in the conveying pipeline (D). 3. From the feeding point (E) the powder is conveyed through the conveying pipeline to the powder container. 4. The filter (F) prevents dust and fine particles from passing through to the pump and further out into the atmosphere. 5. When the powder is conveyed, the shock tanks (G) are charged with compressed air. 6. The pump is turned off when the desired volume of powder has been achieved. The bottom valve opens and the container is emptied. At the same time the compressed air in the shock tanks is released to clean the filter of particles that have stuck to it. 7. When the pump starts again, this cycle is repeated. Suction and emptying times are normally controlled with pneumatic or electrical control systems (H).

Systemize your conveying needs

PIAB shows you the way to the optimum system design
There are many parameters that influence a vacuum conveying system. Each conveying application is unique, and therefore we always have to consider your specific requirements. There are, however, some general principles that apply to the system design. For economic efficiency: Adapt the size of the conveyor to the purpose. For lowest system and operational cost: Try to make the conveying distance as short as possible, and keep the number of pipe bends to a minimum. For lowest energy consumption: Use pipes and avoid routing the conveying pipeline diagonally in the vertical plane.

PIAB pays attention to your products characteristics

Material: From our test facility we have gained knowledge as to how most powders behave. Bulk density: The most usual density is between 0.51.8 kg/l. At extremely low bulk density, < 0.5 kg/l, one has to pay attention to the fact that only a few kilograms may constitute quite a volume. At extremely high bulk density, >1.8 kg/l, it may be difficult to convey the powder in a vertical direction. In such cases a high airflow and a deep vacuum level are required. Particles: Weight, size, distribution, shape and hardness influence the manner of conveying. The size of the particles is also decisive as to what type of filter that is required. Fluidity: A powder may be free flowing, bridge building or adhesive. Certain powders need additional air to be conveyed. Some powders are simply not suitable for vacuum conveying. Other material characteristics: There are many characteristics that need to be considered. A powder may be hygroscopic, abrasive, static, dusty, explosive, combustible, poisonous or aggressive in various ways.

PIABs equipment is adaptable to your applications

A complete vacuum conveyor can be ordered as a standard conveyor or as a combination of each separate unit. You can choose among thousands of combinations in order to get the most customeradapted solution. PIABs vacuum conveyors consist of a number of basic units. Pump: The efficiency of the vacuum pump is directly related to the capacity required by the application. Filter: The characteristics of the powder together with the vacuum flow of the pump decide the type of filter that is suitable. Connection: The conveyor is connected to the pipeline system via the powder inlet. Bottom valve: This valve takes care of emptying and is located above the vessel into which the powder is to be emptied. Control: Your application decides the type of control, whether it should be pneumatic, have its own control system, etc.

Surrounding parameters to keep in mind

How does the powder react to the surrounding environment? Consider all parameters such as humidity of the air, humidity of the powder, temperature of the conveyor and at the feeding point, temperature of the powder, indoors or outdoors.

10

Other equipment that optimizes your application

Piping system: Pipes have lower friction (faster conveying) than hoses and should be used in all stationary installations. To think of: Total conveying distance, vertical distance, number of pipe bends, diameter, whether you are using steel pipes, vacuum hoses or a combination of these, type of connections between the pipes. Feeding point: The surrounding air is the carrier of the powder and should be added at the feeding point. Is the powder to be conveyed directly from a container? Is it to be sucked from a high or low place? Accessories: Does the surrounding air need to be filtered? Does air need to be added at more places than at the feeding point? If the conveying distance is vertically high, the pipeline should be completely emptied between each batch. In this way you can prevent the powder from forming into plugs at the lower part of the vertical pipeline.

Operational parameters to keep in mind

PIAB will be glad to help you achieve your capacity goals. We will calculate the correct size of the pump, the vacuum level during conveying, suction times and emptying times, and the optimum setting of the additional air that is introduced at the feeding point.
