FCC celebrated the annual Santacruzan last May 20, 2012. The procession started at 12:00 noon from the Philippine Center in Seongbukdong and ended at St Benedict's Parish Church in Hyehwadong. Representatives from each of the HFCC committee, and Filipino communities participated in the said event. HFCC choir sang several Marian songs during the procession in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Christ. This year, Queen Helena was portrayed by Russel Lor. She was the 2nd runner up of Gi-
noo at Binibining Kalinangang Filipino 2012 (GBK 2011) escorted by Carlo Clarin, the Ginoo winner of GBK 2011, and Chris Benedict Solis, as the Constantine (Queen Helena's son). In line with the celebration, an induction of newly elected officers of HFCC was held. Mr Roberto Catanghal, Jimmy Villaflor and Ma. Teresa Solis as the President, Vice-president and Secretary, respectively, had an oath taking and were blessed by Fr Alvin Parantar, MSP, HFCC Chaplain.

The new measures will be implemented for workers (E-9 visa holders) from 15 labor-exporting countries under the Employment Permit System (EPS), which will apply not only to workers who finish their working period of 4 years and 10 months but also to foreign workers who complete 6 years* of employment in Korea under the previous code. Foreign migrant workers must meet the following requirements to benefit from the new system: First, they must not have changed their workplace during their period of employment (4 years & 10 months / 6 years). In the case of involuntary changes in employment due to shut-down or closure of factories, foreign workers must have worked for at least 1 year for their most recent employer. Second, workers must have worked in the agro-livestock, fishery, or manufacturing industries for companies employing less than 30 workers. Under the Root Industry Promotion Act, foreign workers are still eligible for the EPS if they have worked for manufacturing companies with less than 50 workers participating in Root Industries. Third, foreign workers' employment contracts must expire after July 2nd, which is the date the new Act will go into effect. 1 month to 7 days before the conclusion of an eligible foreign worker's employment contract, employers can apply for employment permits on their employees' behalf at local employment centers. When applying, employers must submit a copy of a new employment contract for a period of more than 1 year (a standard employment contract) that will go into effect when the worker re-enters the ROK and begins working. Foreign workers who are eligible for the new measures do not need to take a Korean Language Test for re-entry to Korea and are also exempted from employment education before and after coming to Korea. They can return to Korea 3 months after having returned to their home countries, and will work in their previous workplaces. Through this system, employers do not need to find domestic workers and can hire foreign workers who have re-entered the ROK without being constrained by new employment limits on business. (Businesses can currently hire only a limited number of foreign workers) On the other hand, foreign workers who are not eligible to participate in the new Employment Act due to having changed workplaces will have to take a special Korean Language Test to determine their eligibility to return to the ROK 6 months after having returned to their home countries. This special Korean Language Test will only be given to workers who plan to return to Korea and will be held 4 times a year (on a quarterly basis) for each labor-exporting country. Currently the Korean Language Test is offered in Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and Pakistan. It will be offered additionally in Uzbekistan, Philippines, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Mongolia, and Nepal starting in the third quarter of 2012. By Yi Whan-woo foreign wife who was charged with attempting to murder her Korean mother-in-law was sentenced to a three years jail term suspended for five years, Monday. The Gwangju District Court also ordered the 24-year-old Vietnamese housewife to 320 hours of community service, 40 hours of psychotherapy and three-year probation in a trial by jury. Attempting to kill a family member is totally unacceptable for any reason regardless of ones nationality, a judge said. However, the language barrier was the main cause of the conflict in this case. The court accepts the verdict of the jury that deemed active communication between the accused and her family would be the solution rather than sending the accused directly to prison. The woman moved to Gwangju after getting married to a 36-year-old Korean man in 2009. The woman has had conflicts since then with her mother-in-law who lived with them. The foreign wife was resentful about her mother-in-laws complaints and for picking on her for petty matters such as meeting her friends and making phone calls. The daughter-in-law then put rat poison on the 69-year-old mother-in-laws meal in August 2011 but this failed to kill her as the color of the white rice turned blue. She apologized, but the mother-in-law, whose name was not released, was still angry at her foreign daughter-in-law. The best approach would be to treat your child as respectfully as you yourself would like to be treated. 6.Help them feel safe It is very important for children to feel safe and this can start at home by hanging family portraits around the house, or pictures of them with their siblings in their bedrooms -a great way of giving them a sense of belonging. Try not to argue with your spouse in front of the children. If they are sleeping, argue quietly. Children may feel insecure and fearful when they hear parents bickering. Also, children will learn to argue with each other the same way as they hear their parents argue with each other. The best way to deal with this is to show them that when people disagree, they can discuss their differences peacefully. 7.Do Something Familiar. Children love routine and ritual, and if there is a special thing you and your children love doing, make time to make it part of your day/ week. A particular story you always read before
bedtime or something you always say to them before they go to bed. Children love the repetition of something lovely and will remember these little loving moments as they get older. 8.Read together No matter whether you have a tiny baby or a wriggly toddler, they all love to be read to. You may need to adapt what you read slightly, more colourful bold books for babies, and simple, funny or sweet stories for toddlers. A 4-5 year old will be able to handle slightly more complex story and interesting illustrations. Reading with your child creates a perfect bonding time together. 9.Find out one important thing about your childs day. Although this really applies to slightly older children, finding something important about what they did at nursery or the childminders or even if they had a day out with daddy, is very important. It shows that you are interested in what they do and involved in their world. As they get older this can work as they may tell you the good things but also comfortable enough to tell you their worries and fears. 10. Dont worry about the previous nine items. Just when you think youre doing ok as a parent, then along comes an article like this one to make you feel like you are not doing the job right!? Of course, thats not the point. All the goals weve listed are worth aiming for, but no one will ever accomplish all of them, every day. So dont beat yourself up trying to do the impossible. If expectations seem to high, be realistic about it and try not to judge yourself against other parents remember they are probably feeling like you do as well. A good way to look at how to become a good parent, is to try and enjoy the time you have with your little ones. Take a step back, take a breath, look at these little people you have created and spend time with them. Its these moments with your children that make them feel loved. Leave the washing for another few minutes, have that chat with a friend on the phone a bit later and take those extra moments to spend with your children.

How can Mary be God's Mother, but not the Mother of the Trinity?

Saying that Mary is the Mother of God sounds like saying she is the source of Jesus' divinity and the Mother of the Trinity. How should I understand this?
Answer
Devotion is an emotional attachment, which cannot be required of anyone. All that is required is assent to those doctrines that the Church has declared to be true and binding upon Catholic consciences. As long as a Catholic gives assent of the will to the Marian doctrines, it is not required that he have any particular emotional attachment to the Blessed Mother. That said, devotion can be developed just like emotional attachment to any person can be developed, and it is a pious action for a Catholic to develop a devotion to his spiritual Mother. One means of developing such an attachment is to learn more about the Blessed Mother through reading Marian apologetic and devotional literature.

Understood correctly, the title Mother of God (Greek: Theotokos, "God-bearer") does not mean that Mary is the source of Christs divine nature, nor does it mean Mary is the Mother of the Father or the Holy Spirit. It means Mary is Mother of the person of Jesus, who is God: The One whom [Mary] conceived as man by the Holy Spirit, who truly became her Son according to the flesh, was none other than the Fathers eternal Son, the second person of the Holy Trinity. Hence the Church confesses that Mary is truly "Mother of God." (CCC 495)

Spring is a time to have fun and enjoy precious moments with your kids. It is a time to laugh and make your kids feel being loved immeasurably. Spending time with them is a memory to hold on forever.
by: Leslie (photo contest entry) This was taken at Seoul Grand Park. We went there late after going to church so we did not have enough time to explore around. But this was really fun, especially when you are with a friend whom you can rely on. I am so grateful that I found a friend like her, Best Mary as I call her. Our friendship started in Hongkong. But we were not that close then because we have our own friends. Later on, as we both left Hongkong with our employers who migrated to Korea, we got to have more time to hang out together. Here is one lesson I learned, do not judge a person until you get to know them more. At first, medyo ilag at inis talaga ako sa kanya kasi lagi niya ako kinokontra. But at the end, I understand and see the real her. I am thankful, kasi kahit mas matanda ako sa kanya, she is more matured to make decisions. I always seek her advice first, at higit sa lahat hindi siya clumsy like me. Thank you, Best Mary, for all the patience and understanding. I hope our friendship will last longer kahit wala na tayo sa Korea.

A. Caught Up in the Spirit The biblical story told to us in the Scripture readings for the Mass and summarized in the Creed reaches its goal"in the Mass. All the history recorded in Scripture, all that it reveals about the one God"and His only Son, was intended to lead us to the moment of communion with God, through the breaking of the bread(see Luke 24:35). In the Liturgy of the Eucharist, we see the culmination of biblical history right in front of us on the altar. We lift up our hearts"to heaven and are, in a real sense, caught up in spirit"and taken into a liturgy thats always going on in heaven (see Revelation 4:2). Thats what was revealed to the Apostle John in the Bibles last book. In fact, its the Mass that makes sense of the puzzling, and often frightening visions and symbols of Revelation. Whats revealed to John is that the Mass we celebrate on earth is a participation in the liturgy of heaven. Johns vision begins on the Lords day,Sunday (see Revelation 1:10) - the name the first Christians gave to the first day of the week, upon which they celebrated the breaking of the bread(see Acts 20:7; Luke 24:1). John is caught up in spirit on the Lords Day.In other words, possibly while celebrating the Eucharist himself, John is taken to heaven. And John sees the same things we see when we come to Mass. He sees an altar (see Revelation 8:3); candles (1:12); incense (5:8); priests dressed in robes (4:4). And he sees bread or manna (2:17), and bowls or chalices of blood (see Revelation 16). He sees heavenly worshippers angels and saints crying, Holy, Holy, Holy(4:8), singing a hymn to the glory of God, the heavenly king (15:3) and shouting alleluia(19:1,3,6) and making the sign of the cross on their foreheads (14:1). There are readings from Scripture (Revelation 2-3), and, finally, the wedding feast of the Lamb(19:9). B. The Mass Revealed in Revelation In fact, there are many more similarities between the Book of Revelation and the Mass. Notice, that the book itself is written with the intention that it will be read during the liturgy (see Revelation 1:3).And the book is divided into two parts that roughly correspond to the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist in todays Mass. The first eleven chapters are concerned with the reading of letters, to be written on a scroll by John who gives witness to the word of God and to the testimony of Jesus Christ by reporting what he saw at the dictation of one like a son of man(see Revelation 1: 2,11-13). The one like a son of man" is Jesus Christ, who often referred to himself as Son of
Man (see, Matthew 25:31, Mark 8:31, Luke 12:8, John 3:13). That image, in turn, takes us back to the vision of Daniel, in which One like a son of man comes in glory on the clouds and receives an everlasting dominion from God (see Daniel 7:13-14). But Revelation also identifies Jesus by name: the name by which He is called is the Word of God (see Revelation 19:13). John is the human author of this Scripture. But the Scripture has a divine author, too, the Word of God. Significantly, the first three chapters of Revelation begin the book as the Mass begins, with a sort of Penitential Rite. Jesus uses the word repent eight times during his seven letters (see Revelation 2:16). And when the Word of God has been proclaimed, the Son declares: Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, (then) I will enter his house and dine with him, and he with Me (see Revelation 3:20). With this invitation to dine with Christ himself, the heavenly Liturgy of the Word gives way to the feast of the heavenly Eucharist. As in our Mass, the liturgy of the Word in Revelation prepares us to receive the Lamb of God. All who have ears to hear are told that Jesus himself will give them hidden manna. This is a reference to the heavenly bread that God gave Israel to eat on their Exodus journey (see Psalm 78:23-25). But this heavenly bread was a sign of the bread that Christ had come to give His own body, given for the life of the world (see John 6:32-33; 4951). This is the daily bread that He had taught His disciples to pray for - in a prayer that we pray in every Mass and which we will consider in depth in our next lesson. Revelations second half begins in Chapter 11, with the opening of Gods temple in heaven, and culminates in the pouring of the seven chalices and the marriage supper of the Lamb a striking image of the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
A. With the Angels and Saints John is invited to come up here (see Revelation 4:1). And we are invited to come up to heaven, as well to lift up our hearts - at the beginning of our Liturgy of the Eucharist. When we lift up our hearts, we are asked to sing with the angels and saints. This is not simply a fine expression of sentiment. As with everything else in the Mass, there is a sacramental realism at work here. At this point in the Mass, we are in a mysterious way joining our song to the song that John and the prophet Isaiah before him heard in heaven: Holy, holy, holy . . . (see Revelation 4:8; Isaiah 6:3). The second part of our song (Blessed is he . . . ) is taken from the Psalm that pilgrims to Jerusalem would sing at Passover. It was also the psalm that was sung upon Christs triumphal entry to Jerusalem (see Mark 11:10; Psalm 118:26). The biblical words give us clues to whats going on in the Mass. We have gathered around the altar not only an earthly altar, but a heavenly altar as well. We have made our way to Mount Zion, the new and heavenly Jerusalem.
This is what John saw the Lamb standing on Mount Zion (see Revelation 14:1). The Letter to the Hebrews (see Hebrews 12:22-24) likewise speaks of the Eucharistic celebration on earth as entrance into and participation in the heavenly liturgy in the new Jerusalem. In the Mass, says Hebrews, we approach Mount Zion, the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. There, we join countless angels and the assembly of the firstborn and Jesus, mediator of the new covenant and the sprinkled blood in a festal gathering or feast. These lines are filled with biblical allusions and references. It is interesting to note that the word translated assembly is the Greek word ekklesia the word for church. And notice the similarities between Hebrews description of the Massand Johns Revelation. Both see a new Jerusalem, a new Zion, the dwelling place of the Lord (see Psalm 132:1314). Both see angels and Jesus, the Lamb whose blood takes away the sin of the world. And both see a feast and a gathering of firstborn or firstfruits of those who believe in Jesus (see Revelation 14:4).And both see in this feast in the temple of heaven a sign of the new covenant wrought in the blood of Jesus (see Revelation 11:19). What these Scriptures show us is that the Mass is the summit of salvation history told in Scripture. And this is the same thing that the prayers of the Mass tell us. B. Praying Salvation History The Eucharistic Prayer of the Mass is a prayer of thanksgiving in which the gifts we offer at the altar - bread and wine, and all the works of our hands and minds - are sanctified by the power of the Holy Spirit. As with everything else in the Mass, these are biblical prayers, employing language found in the Scriptures, and also summarizing the biblical story (to read them, see Eucharistic Prayers). But they are much more than that. The Eucharistic prayers retell salvation history, but also, make us a part of that history, through the sacramental change of bread and wine into Christs body and blood. The various prefaces to the Eucharistic prayers recall for us the entire biblical story, showing us always how the whole plan of salvation recorded in the Bible reached its summit in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, which we commemorate in the Mass. We see your infinite power in your loving plan of salvation, we pray in Preface of Sundays in Ordinary Time III, one of several preface options for Masses celebrated outside of special seasons such as Lent, Easter, Advent, and Christmas. This preface sketches Gods loving plan, giving us in two short lines a summary of the entire Bible: Man refused your friendship, but man himself was to restore it through Jesus Christ our Lord. Mary went through the post-childbirth purification ceremony for the same reason Jesus went through the post-childbirth circumcision ceremony: out of obedience to the Mosaic law. Both rites purification (ritual cleansing of the mother) and circumcision (removing the foreskin of the child)symbolized being freed from sin. Jesus and Mary underwent them not because they needed to be freed from sin but because they were Jews who followed the Mosaic law. Thats why Jesus was baptized: not because he needed it himself but to set the pattern for us to follow. Eucharistic Prayer IV provides an entire history of the world beginning with Gods forming of men and women in his own likeness and their loss of his friendship through disobedience. The prayer continues to outline Old Testament history - Gods offering of covenants to mankind to help all men seek and find Him; the promise of salvation delivered through the prophets.In the fullness of time, the prayer declares, God sent His only Son. The climax of the salvation history told in the Eucharistic Prayers as in the Bible is the Last Supper. C. In Remembrance of Him As we noted in our first lesson, the words of institution in the Eucharistic Prayer are taken directly from the biblical accounts of the Last Supper, as recalled also by St. Paul (see 1 Corinthians 11:23-29;Matthew 26:26-29; Mark 14:22-25; Luke 22:15-20). And the Church, in the Eucharist, fulfills Christs command, recorded in the Scriptures:Do this in remembrance of Me.
At this point in the Eucharistic Prayer, it is significant that the priest uses the exact words of Scripture: This is My body . . . and This is the cup of My blood . . . Why is this significant? Because, as we pointed out in our first lesson, only the Word of God can do what Jesus has asked - transform bread and wine into His body and blood. Our worship can be life-transforming because the biblical Word we hear is not a human word but . . . truly is the Word of God (see 1 Thessalonians 2:13). Only the Word of God has the power to deliver what it promises, its power to bring us into communion with the true and living presence of Jesus. Only the sacred speech of God can perform the divine action of transforming bread and wine into the Body and Blood of our Lord. Only the sacred speech of God can bring us into communion with the living God. And in the Mass, we respond to this great mystery of our faith in words also drawn from Scripture. The memorial acclamations (Christ has died . . .) are also biblical prayers. With Paul, we affirm that when we eat this bread and drink this cup we proclaim His death until He comes (see 1 Corinthians 11:26). We also affirm that by dying and rising, He destroyed
death (see 1 Corinthians 15:26) and that He will come again (see John 14:3). He is indeed, the savior of the world (see John 4:42; 1 John 4:14).
