In the name of the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, Amen. Brothers and sisters, Happy New Year! And on this first day of the New Year I would like to start by sharing some good news! Through faith, salvation comes to usthere is nothing that we can do to earn Gods love, care, or promise of new life, except hold onto whatever faith God has granted us. Through faith, new life comes to us and this is only by the grace of God. During the Christmas season we remember that new life came to us in the Christ Child, but we also remember the faithful acts that led up to, and followed, Jesus birth. We remember the faithful response of Mary and Joseph when visited by angels. We remember the faithful responses of the shepherds who went out and shared all they had heard and seen. We remember the faithful responses of everyone involved in announcing the birth of God incarnate. And here we are, a week after Christmas, reading Lukes gospel account of Jesus consecration in Jerusalem. In the lesson this morning we get a sense of just how new life comes to us While Lukes lesson is about Jesus consecration, its not about what Jesus is doingafter all hes only 40 days old and infants at this stage dont do too much except cause great joy, hope, expectation, and of course, exhaustion. The lesson is not only about Jesus consecration, but also about faithand Gods faithfulness to us. Its about Mary and Joseph, Simeon and Anna and their faithful responses that lead to the coming of new life for themselves and eventually the whole world. Mary and Joseph are righteous and devout when they bring Jesus to the temple. They are faithful to the Law of MosesGods law. Mary and Joseph faithfully seek to

fulfill the expectations that God has of them without fully knowing what God has in store for their baby. In faith, they fulfill the law and their responsibilities as new parents. In doing sothey literally carry Gods salvation and redemption...Gods promise of new life into the temple. Im fairly sure that Mary and Joseph didnt go to Jerusalem with Jesus with the goal of bringing salvation and redemption to the world. I think that they were simply doing what God required of themand in doing this, they were part of changing the lives of at least two people: Simeon and Anna. Simeon was righteous and devout Jew. A prophet. In faith he spent his days doing what was required of him as a faithful Jew. At the same time, he was attentive to the Spirits movement. Through Simeons faithfulness, new life came to him in the arms of a young couple. Anna was also a deeply devout and righteous woman. In fact she never left the temple. The temple was her life. Yet in all of her faithfulnessall that she did to remain righteous and pureAnnas redemption came to her in a new waya small child. Gods salvation and redemption came to Simeon and Anna in their faithfulness. For us today, through the movement of the Holy Spirit and the Christ who lives today, new life comes to us in new ways each and every day. We might be reminded of our new life in the form an infant that brings about hope and joy in new ways. We might be reminded of our new life through encounters with strangers on the street. We might be reminded of our new life when we see relationships deepen with friends or loved ones in ways never expected. And so, brothers and sisters, my hope this New Year is that we remain faithful. My hope for us is that we might remember that in our faithfulness, salvation and redemption and new life comes to us. It is my hope that your faith continues to grow and deepen in this New Yearbecause it is through faith that Gods salvation comes to us. And thanks be to God for this. Amen.

Hermanos y hermanas, Feliz ao Nuevo! En el primer da de este nuevo ao quisiera empezar compartiendo con ustedes algunas buenas noticias. Por medio de la fe, nos llega la salvacinno hay nada que podemos hacer para ganarnos el amor de Dios, su cuidad o la promesa de una vida nueva, excepto mantenernos en la fe que Dios nos ha otorgado. Por la fe, la Neiva vida llega a nosotros, y esto slo por la gracia de Dios. Durante la estacin de Navidad recordamos que la nueva vida nos llega en el nio Cristo, pero tambin recordamos los actos de fe que nos llevaron hasta este punto y continuaron despus del nacimiento de Jess. Recordamos la fiel respuesta de Mara y Jos cuando fueron visitados por los ngeles. Recordamos la fiel respuesta de los pastores que fueron y compartieron todo lo que haban visto y odo. Recordamos la fiel respuesta de cada uno que particip en el anuncio del nacimiento de Dios encarnado. Y aqu estamos, una semana despus de la Navidad, leyendo la narracin de Lucas sobre la consagracin de Jess en Jerusaln. En las lecturas de esta maana adquirimos un sentido de cmo precisamente la vida nueve llega a nosotros Sin embargo, aunque la narracin de Lucas es acerca de la consagracin de Jess, no es acerca de lo que Jess est haciendodespus de todo he tiene solamente 40 das de haber nacido, y los nios a esta edad no hacen mucho excepto producir gozo, esperanza, expectativas y, por supuesto, agotamiento. La leccin no es realmente acerca de la consagracin de Jess, sino ms bien acerca de la fey la fidelidad de Dios para nosotros. Es acerca de Mara y Jos. Simn y Ana y sus fieles respuestas que nos dirigen a la llegada de la nueva vida para ellos y ellas y, eventualmente, para todo el mundo. Mara y Jos son justos y devotos al traer a Jess al templo. Son fieles a le Ley de Moissla Ley de Dios. Mara y Jos quieren cumplir fielmente las expectativas de Dios, sin que ellos sepan exactamente lo que Dios tiene preparado para el nio. Por fe, ellos cumplen con la Ley y con su responsabilidad como padres. Al hacerloliteralmente llevan adelante la salvacin y redencin de Diosla promesa de una nueva vida, al templo. Estoy casi seguro Mara y Jos no fueron a Jerusaln con Jess con la finalidad de traer la salvacin y la redencin para el mundo. Creo que ellos simplemente estaban haciendo lo que Dios requera de ellosy al hacer esto, fueron instrumentos para cambiar la vida de cuando menos dos personas: Simn y Ana.

Simn era un judo devoto y justo. Un profeta. En fe, el pasaba los das haciendo lo que se requera de l como un judo fiel. Al mismo tiempo, el estaba atento al movimiento del Espritu. A travs de la fidelidad de Simn, una nueva vida vino a l en brazos de una joven pareja. Ana era tambin una mujer profundamente devote y justa. De hecho, ella nunca abandon el templo. El templo era su vida. Y sin embargo, a pesar de toda su fidelidada pesar de todo lo que hizo para mantenerse justa y purala redencin de Ana lleg de una manera diferentecomo un nio pequeo. La salvacin y redencin de Dios vino a Simn y a Ana en su fidelidad. Para nosotros hoy, por medio del movimiento del Espritu Santo y de Cristo que vive hoy, la vida nueva nos llega en maneras nuevas cada da y todos los das Puede que se nos recuerde de nuestra nueva vida en la forma de un infante que nos trae esperanza y gozo en maneras nuevas. Puede ser que se nos recuerde de nuestra nueva vida por medio de encuentros con extraos en la calle. Puede que se nos recuerde de nuestra nueva vida cuando vemos que nuestras relaciones se profundizan con nuestros amigos y nuestros seres queridos, en maneras que nunca esperaramos. As que, hermanas y hermanos, mi esperanza es que en este Ao Nuevo nos mantengamos fieles. Mi esperanza para nosotros es que podamos recordad que en nuestra fidelidad, la salvacin, la redencin y la nueva vida llega a nosotros. Es mi esperanza que su fe contine creciendo y profundizndose en este nuevo ao porque es a travs de la fe que la salvacin de Dios llega a nosotros. Gracias sean dadas a Dios por esto. Amn.
