Saint Brigids
We love celebrating marriages and preparing people for this sacrament. Due to the many parishioners who seek to get married at St. Brigid's and the busy weekend mass & Baptism schedule, we regret that we cannot honor requests for weddings for nonparishioners. Please call the Parish Center (334-0021 ext 105) at least six months in advance to make arrangements for a meeting with a deacon or priest and for the Parish In-home Pre-Cana Program. The coordinators are Diane & Dick McIver (334-7253). Visit our website for more details about getting married at St. Brigid's. www.saintbrigid.net
Our parish family participates compassionately in the healing mission of Jesus Christ. Anyone who is not able to attend Mass because of frailty, chronic or temporary illness, or admission to hospice can have Holy Communion brought to them at home on a regular basis. Please call Sr. Susan Smolinsky (3340021 ext.135) who coordinates the pastoral care of our sick and homebound parishioners. Communal celebrations of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick take place when noted in the bulletin. Individual reception of this sacrament prior to surgery or treatment can be arranged before or after any Mass with the priest. If you are hospitalized and want to see a chaplain and receive the sacraments during your stay, please indicate your religion and request upon admission. If you want the parish to pray for you while you are hospitalized or sick at home, please call the receptionist at the parish center. Please remember that federal law prohibits healthcare providers from disclosing any information regarding your health without your written permission.

Coordinators of the preparation program are John & Edna Abdale and Deacon Frank and Maureen Pesce (997-4778). Adults, and children who are old enough to understand, are welcomed into the church through Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. There is a process that prepares people to be initiated into the church through these Easter sacraments. Parents with older children are invited to call Sister Ann Horn (333-9434). St. Brigids Attic Thrift Shop

St. Brigid Mary of the Gael was born in the mid-fifth century, is buried at Downpatrick beside St. Patrick and St. Colmcille. Brigid built the first Irish Convent beside a giant oak tree-this place became known as the Church of the Oak (Cill Dara) or Kildare as it is known today. Brigid was the daughter of a pagan chieftain-a stubborn unbeliever. Before his death, Brigid sat by him in prayer, and whiled away the time weaving the first St. Brigids Cross from the rushes strewn about the floor. Her father, seeing the Cross asked her to explain its meaning and was so overwhelmed, became a Christian before his death. The St. Brigids Cross, believed to protect the home and animals from evil and want, is placed in cottages on her feast day, February 1st, the day on which she died about 524 A.D.

Care for our Sisters & Brothers

St. Brigid's Parish puts into practice the words of Jesus: "Whatever you do for the least of my brothers and sisters, you do for me" (Matthew 25:40). Joan Echausse is the Director of Parish Outreach (334-0021 ext 108). The Parish Outreach Office (997-5507) is located in the lower level of the rectory (50 Post Ave). St. Brigid's Well (997-0170) serves our sisters and brothers in the New Cassel area at 817 Prospect Ave. Sr. Susan Smolinsky (334-0021 ext 135) coordinates the Ministry of Winter Grace and Norma Beyer coordinates Senior Connections. Yanira Chacon-Lopez (333-0651) coordinates Casa Mary Johanna which provides immigration counseling and other support in the Hispanic Community at 275 Brook Street.

From the early Irish immigrants who founded this parish in 1850, to the arrival of people from Europe, Africa, Asia and Central and South America, each culture brings a heritage to share and particular ways to express our one faith in Jesus Christ. Some in St. Brigids trace their roots here for several generations. Some have been here for a decade or two. Some have just arrived. A multi-cultural community is balanced when there is time and space for cultures to develop on their own, and time and space where we are all together as one -- working together, playing together and praying together. St. Brigids has a vibrant Black Catholic community that has been ministering in church and community for decades. We freely share the gifts of our faith and our heritage in the service of Jesus Christ. Contact: Bernice Campbell, MCAA (334-0021)

Breaking Open the Word

Reflecting on next Sundays gospel before you come to mass can bring so much more meaning to your experience of liturgy. Heres the gospel for next Sunday. How does this gospel touch your life? September 13th - Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Mark 8:27-35 Jesus and his disciples set out for the villages of Caesarea Philippi. Along the way he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?" They said in reply, "John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others one of the prophets." And he asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter said to him in reply, "You are the Christ." Then he warned them not to tell anyone about him. He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and rise after three days. He spoke this openly. Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. At this he turned around and, looking at his disciples, rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do." He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them, "Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it."

Gospel Reflection Questions Think of what Jesus

might be teaching us about suffering in todays Gospel.

Think of how death may lead to life.

Some Questions for Families & Children

Think of some of the difficult things you have had to do, that made you feel better about yourself. Think of what it means to be a true follower of Jesus.

Being a disciple of Jesus is no easy task. It takes us out of our comfort zone, into a place of sacrifice, and sometimes pain and suffering. Finding out what we need to die to, brings us closer to God and God becomes more present in our lives.

Sunday Morning

Ephphatha!
E-mail Father Ralph: shepherd@saintbrigid.net

POST

I dont know of any other word spelled with a double ph, but there it
is: the word ephphatha is uttered by Jesus in todays Gospel. (Mark 7:31-37). Its a Greek form of an Aramaic word that means be opened, and Jesus uses it as part of his healing a deaf man with a speech impediment. (He also uses spit -- and with todays worries about swine flu, I wonder how many people would go to Jesus if they knew this is what he used to heal!!)

Paying Down the Debt Were looking to pay down our debt of $400,000 and there is a challenge grant in the works. A generous parishioner has offered $100,000 as a challenge for the rest of us to raise $300,000 by the end of September. Im most grateful to those who have accepted this challenge by donating toward the debt reduction campaign. So far we have received $65,000 in contributions. Please consider making your contribution this week
Goal: $400,000 $100,000 Grant

Be opened! What a great command for all of us who are deaf! And we all are hard of hearing in some way. Some, like the man in the gospel, have a physical disability with regard to hearing. But all of us have some other ways in which we cant hear others. And some of us also have speech impediments, for what comes out of our mouths are criticisms more than praise, nagging more than encouragement, making jokes at others expense instead of words of healing, curse words instead of kind words.

So as the new school year begins -- whether were going to school or

Debt Reduction

not -- this is a time for a new beginning in which we can be opened to a new way of listening and speaking. Watch as Jesus walks up to you and invites you to come off to the side with him. He touches your ears. (What does that feel like? What does that do to you?) He touches your tongue with his spit. (Seems gross at first, but then you realize that what came from Jesus mouth now touches your mouth. Your words can now be Jesus words. Your speech can be Jesus speech. How do you feel about this?)

of being a better listener. Ask him, Who do you want me to pay attention to more these next days? And then over the next week look carefully at who Jesus puts in your path and really pay attention. Listen, not only with your ears, but with your eyes and your heart. Notice: what is this person going through right now? Are there joys to be shared? Are there sorrows? What can you hear that you didnt hear before Jesus touched your ears?
$65,000 Contributed as of 9/1/09

In your prayer, experience Jesus opening you to the new possibilities

Our children will be learning new and wonderful things this coming school year. We too can learn wondrous things in the months ahead when we get our new hearing and we pay attention to the words we use. May God bless all of us students.

Padre Jaime Adolfo Calderon H.

Outreach
Volunteers Needed.... St. Brigids Attic St. Brigids Attic Thrift Shop, located at 178 Post Avenue, Westbury, is in need of volunteers to help sort clothes, hang-er clothes and act as greeters and St. Brigids sales-persons for the wonderful people who are our customers at The Attic. Thank you to the many members of St. Brigids Family who donate washed gently used clothing and assorted household items to assist the many people who cross The Attics threshold hoping to shop and purchase items at very reasonable prices! As always, thank you to all our wonderful volunteers in Parish Outreach who are the very heart of our outreach to Gods people in need. Happy rest of summer,

Food Pantry Needs... The summer requests at St. Brigids Food Pantry have depleted our shelves of spaghetti sauce, pasta, corn (always needed) and fruit juice snacks. We are always so grateful to St. Brigids family who hear the cries of the poor and help fill up the Pantry shelves, so that so many will be fed and nourished. The Well Needs... A Wednesday volunteer (either 10 am to 12 noon; or 1 to 3 pm) is needed to assist Donna Aravena, Assistant Director, in greeting and assessing the needs of our clients who seek ministry at The Well. Please call Joan at 3340021, ext. 108 for more information. Thank You... To the many women of St. Brigids family who

celebrated Christmas Eve in July and cut out angels to decorate our beautiful Advent trees! Volunteers will soon be needed to assist with our Thanksgiving K of C Food Drive, scheduled for October 17, 2009 at our local supermarkets. Please watch the Bulletin for more details!

St. Brigids CYO Basketball Program for Boys and Girls

In the 70s and 80s there were over 300 participants in this program each year. In 2008-2009 there were only 21! (Sometimes) It is time to take inventory. The program for this 2009-2010 season is at a low ebb. The program will not be activiated this season, unless there is a large infusion of interested, dedicated players and coaches. I am open to meningful dialogue. If interested give me a call. John Miller 334-5670

To all who contributed to the success of St. Brigids Summer Raffle! Raffle results will appear in next weeks bulletin.

What is Stewardship? (Exploring the meaning of Christian Stewardship) A starting point for Christian stewardship is the recognition that all good gifts in our lives come from God. Some people do not think of themselves as being gifted by God. Others express gratitude often for the gifts God gives in many ways and at many times and for many purposes in life. For reflection: Do you see yourself as being gifted by God? What are some of Gods gifts in your life? How do you respond to Gods generosity?

In todays Gospel, as he heals the deaf man with the speech impediment, Jesus says Ephphatha, which means Be opened! How can each one of us be open to that which Jesus invites us? How can we be open to follow Jesus and share what God has given us with others?
(based upon this weekends Scriptures)
