Luke Roske-Metcalfe The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Ezekiel 37:1-14; Acts 2:1-21; John 15:26-27, 16:4b-15 May 27, 2012 Pentecost In the name of the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, Amen. Brothers and sisters, we gather together today to celebrate Pentecost - the arrival of the Holy Spirit among us. We remember how the Spirit came to the disciples who had faithfully gathered together to wait. The Spirit came and unified the disciples in unexpected and surprising ways. It enlivened them as a group, and helped everyone to understand one another in their own language. For good reason, we gather together on this Pentecost Sunday to celebrate what has become known as the birth of the church. We consider Pentecost to be the birth of the church because everything that happens after this eventeverything we read about in the epistles are the experiences of the early Christian church as it shared the good news of Jesus the Christ. This is how we understand the Pentecost event that Luke writes about in the book of Acts, but I cant help but wonder if we fail to miss how important and troubling and frightening and unsettling this event really was. On one level, its a beautiful beginning that unifies people and helps them to understand one anotherand thats something that we, as a bilingual congregation, can resonate with very deeply. On another level, the descent of the Holy Spirit is so unsettling and profound and important that the disciples are left to ask themselves, What does this mean? Peter is left to quote the prophet Joel as he attempts to answer their question. He says, In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young ones will see visions, your old ones will dream dreams.

For me, this means that through the presence, movement, and guidance of the Holy Spirit, people that we know, and love, and care about will do unexpected things. Without the Spirit, we too often think that our sons and daughters are too young to prophesy, we determine that young men and women arent wise enough to have visions, and that old people are simply too worn out to dream. Peter draws on a prophets words to help the community understand the unsettling events on that particular day of Pentecost. Through the Spirit, people will do the unexpected. Your sons and daughters will prophesyyour young ones will see visionsyour old ones will dream dreams. Today we might be wise not only to hear the disciples question, What does this mean? but also to hear the words of Joel. Today we celebrate Pentecost, but last week I suggested that we might be in our own sort of upper room, waiting for the arrival of the Holy Spirit here. A couple of weeks ago, I asked you the question, Are we a sustainable congregation? and suggested we should be free to answer, No. While we might not be asking about meaning, like the disciples were in the upper room, we are certainly waiting for guidance, and clarity, and direction. Just as Peter called upon the words of Joel to provide the early disciples meaning to such an unsettling, yet inspiring, event, I would also like to call upon Joels words. I would like to invite us to hear them as we seek the Holy Spirits guidance in answering the question, Are we a sustainable congregation? If we are to answer this question positively, and say, Right now we are struggling, but yes, we can be a sustainable congregation, it will only happen through the movement of the Holy Spirit. It will only happen because the Spirit inspires us and gives us courage to do the unexpected. Just as the Spirit leads our sons and daughters to prophesy, our young ones to see visions, and our old ones to dream dreams, the Spirit just might enliven this congregation to become sustainable once againand whos to say this is impossible? After all, today we celebrate the arrival of the Holy Spirit in and among the disciples, but let us not forget that this is the same Spirit that hovered over the waters in Creation, that breathed life into the field of dry bones, that was present in the upper room during the last Supperand that joins us now. So let us embrace this process of answering difficult questions, because just as we seek to be faithful to God in our life as a congregation, so too it the Spirit present and faithful to us. And thanks be to God for that. Amen.

En el nombre del Creador, Redentor, y Sustentador, Amn. Hermanos y hermanas, nos congregamos hoy para celebrar Pentecosts la llegada del Espritu Santo alrededor de nosotros. Recordamos como el Espritu vino a los discpulos quienes se haban congregado a esperarlo. El Espritu vino y unific a los discpulos de maneras inesperadas y sorprendentes El Espritu los anim a todos los presentes como grupo y los ayud a entenderse el uno al otro en su propio idioma. Tenemos buenas razones para congregarnos aqu hoy en esta domingo de Pentecosts para celebrar que ha sido conocido como el nacimiento de la iglesia. Pentecosts es considerado el nacimiento de la iglesia porque todo que pasa despus la llegada del Espritutodo que leemos en los epstolasson las experiencias de los primeros cristinanos en su trabajo de compartir las buenas nuevas de Jesucristo. As es como entendemos la narracin de San Lucas del evento de Pentecosts en el libro de Hechos. Pero no puedo evitar preguntarme si somos capaces de no perder la importancia y lo preocupante y aterradora e inquietante de la realidad de este evento. En cierta manera la llegada del Espritu era un comienzo bonito que unifiqu a la gente y los ayud a entenderse el uno al otroesto es algo que nosotros, como iglesia bilinge, entendemos muy bien. Por otro lado, la llegada del Espritu Santo es tan inquietante, profunda e importante que los discpulos se preguntaron: Qu significa esto? Pedro cita al profeta Joel en un intento de responder a las pregunta de la gente. El dijo, "Suceder que en los ltimos das dice Dios, derramar mi Espritu sobre todo el gnero humano. Los hijos y las hijas de ustedes profetizarn, tendrn visiones los jvenes y sueos los ancianos. Para mi, el sentido que tiene esto es que, a travs de la presencia, el movimiento, y direccin del Espritu Santo, las personas que nosotros conocemos, que amamos, y las personas que se preocupan porellos y ellas van a hacer cosas inesperadas. Sin el Espritu, nosotros pensamos a menudo que nuestros hijos e hijas son demasiado jvenes para profetizar, se declara que los hombres y mujeres jvenes no son lo suficientemente sabios para tener visiones, y que los ancianos estn simplemente demasiado cansados para soar. Pedro se usa las palabras de un profeta para ayudar la comunidad a entender los eventos inquietante durante la celebracin de Pentecosts. A travs del espritu Santo, las personas harn cosas inesperados. Sus hijos e hijas profetizarnsus jvenes vern visioneslos viejos soarn sueos. Hoy seriamos sabios si no escucharamos solamente la pregunta de los discpulos: Qu significa esto?, sino tambin escucharamos las palabras de Joel. Hoy celebramos Pentecosts, pero la semana pasada les suger que nosotros mismos,

podramos estar en nuestro propio aposente alto, esperando la llegada del Espritu. Hace quince das, les pregunt: Somos un congregacin sustentable? Y suger que debieramos ser libres para ofrecer una respuesta de, No. Aunque, no estamos preguntandonos sobre el significado de la llegada del Espritu Santo, ciertamente estamos esperando recibir direccin y claridad. As como Pedro utiliz las palabras de Joel para darles a los primeros discpulos el significado a un evento inquietante, y sin embargo, inspirador, me gustara recordarles las palabras de Joel. Me gustara invitarnos a escucharlas mientras buscamos la direccin del Espritu Santo para recibir una respuesta a la pregunta: Somos sustentables como congregacin? Si contestaramos esta pregunta positivamente diciendo, En este momentos estamos pasando por tiempos difciles, pero s, podramos ser sustentables, esto solo puede ocurrir a trves del movimiento del Espritu Santo. Solo va a ocurrir porque el Espritu nos inspira y nos da valor a hacer lo que es inesperado. As como el Espritu gua nuestros hijos e hijas a profetizar, a nuestros jvenes a ver visiones, y a nuestros ancianos a soar sueos, el Espritu podra revitalizar a esta congregacin para llegar a ser sostenible una vez msy quin puede decir que esto es imposible? Despus de todo, hoy celebramos la llegada del Espritu Santo adentro y alrededor de los primeros discpulos, pero no debemos olvidar que este es el mismo Espritu que se mova sobre las aguas de la Creacin, que dio vida a un campo de huesos secos, que estaba presente en el aposento alto, durante la ltima cenay que nos esta uniendo ahora. As que vamos a acoger este proceso de responder a preguntas difciles, porque as como tratamos de ser fieles a Dios en nuestra vida como congregacin, as tambin el Espritu est presente y es fiel con nosotros. Y gracias a Dios por eso. Amn.
