CONCEPT
Brief Create a range of 5 limited edition book covers for a range of Penguin Modern Classics to be distributed at the 2012 Hay Festival of Literature and Arts, combining illustration and illustrative lettering as the main design aesthetic. Background A lot of Penguin stories are known both in celluloid and print, so it is essential to come at this from a fresh angle. Try to design covers for a new generation of readers, avoiding the obvious clichs and steering clear of the film promotional graphics. Originality is key. Target Audience Audiences: all readers both familiar and unfamiliar with the text, male and female. Solution Five book cover designs and a typeface for each, as well as proposal for five accompanying iPhone themes and Google Chrome themes. Additional proposal for the point of sale at the Hay Festival.

Both typeface and app icon designs are inspired by sixties psychedelic typefaces and motifs to reflect the time that the book was written in.

The cover pattern is inspired by the stars of the American flag to reflect the American themes within the book. The lipstick aesthetic of the typograpy is to reflect the playful and sexual conotations of the story.
