Summer 2012 Technology Classes

Jump start your use of todays digital tools by attending our summer digital technology workshops. The NW Service Cooperative is offering hands-on technology classes during June, July and August at the Training Center at the Thief River Falls office. These courses are designed for teachers and office professionals looking to learn new technology skills or to improve existing skills. Each session will focus on learning to use the application tools in a school or office environment. Full day courses are $125 for NWSC members, $145 for non-members. iPad Session are $165. Sessions start at 8:45am with registration. Class begins at 9am going to 4pm with an hour for lunch on your own. Morning and afternoon refreshments will be served. All our sessions this year are full day sessions. Continuing education credits as well as graduate credit from Hamline will be available. Graduate credit is $150 per credit with 1 or 2 credits available. To earn 1 graduate credit students must participate in 12 hours of class (i.e. two all-day workshops). An outside of class assignment will be necessary to complete the credit. Register early. Class sizes will be limited and will be taught in our mobile Mac Lab which has both Windows and Max OS available. Registration deadline for all classes is June 1st. If our minimum enrollment is not met, classes will be canceled. Classes will be taught by teachers from the area, including, Kurt Reynolds-Thief River Falls, Kyle Erickson-NWSC, Troy Reynolds-Waubun, Kelly Weets-Thief River Falls, Jenn Nelson-Eden Prairie, Lenore Pietruszewski-SAC, Melanie McGlynn-SAC, and Alice Hofstad from NWSC. Jennifer Nelson, technology integration specialist at Eden Prairie High School, will be doing these sessions. Jenn was with us last year and did an awesome job on iPad training. She loved northern Minnesota, its teachers, and their enthusiasm. Shes back to provide both beginning training and more advanced training. You will find her invigorating, funny, and a whirlwind of knowledge. As a Eden Prairie Technology Integrationist she is leading the way with implementing iPads and iTouchs in the classrooms. Jennifer Nelson is an experienced educator with more than 15 years experience as a high school mathematics teacher and technology integrationist. Nelson has taught various subjects including algebra, pre-calculus and computer science, online and in the classroom. In addition to teaching, Nelson has done extensive work leading professional development sessions on the integration of technology in and out of the classroom. She has a passion for finding innovative ways to bring learning to all students, somehow finding time to fly fish and kayak between ideas. iPads in the Classroom: Instruction for Teachers June 27, 2012 ~ All day Workshop Fee: $165 registration fee

Education in the 21st century requires 21st century skills and tools. Create, collaborate and consume world class content using your new iPad, iPad2 or iPod Touch. Engaging one day session provides you with a working knowledge of how iTunes will serve as your media organizer and how an iOS device can become a powerful consumption/production tool. Learn about recommended free apps to access news, books, weather, social media, & educational content. You will see examples of classroom application and recommended apps for purchase. During this training you will build a collection of world class podcasts, TED talks and iTunes U content that will inspire and engage powerful instructional practice. To top it off we will explore a collection of free electronic books. Walk away with 21st century resources, a dynamic iTunes library and the knowledge to manage your device. During the day you will: 1. Gain an understanding of how mobile technology is being used in classrooms and schools. 2. Download and sample free text books that are available for students in science, math, and language arts. 3. Gain an understanding of what is required to deploy mobile devices in your schools. 4. Learn how to sync your iPad to your iTunes account. 5. Try out various educational applications. Bring your iPad, iPad2, or iPadHD along with the iTunes account password so you can add apps during the training. You will need the AppleID and password to access your existing account. iPads for Administrators June 28, 2012 ~ All day Workshop Fee: $165 registration fee

In this Introduction to iPads for administrators, we will cover everything from syncing calendars, email, tasks and managing documents between your device and a computer. Discussion of multitasking, managing your apps, cloud storage solutions, and the best apps for word processing and presentation creation. How to remote wipe your device and keep things safe will also be covered. Trouble shoot like a pro by the time you leave. Together we will also explore the video and photo capabilities of the device and how you might make use of these to promote the great work being done in your school. Using Keynote, we will create a presentation, importing images from other applications on your iPad, add images youve taken, and explore sharing to the cloud. We will discuss presenting using your iPad with an Apple TV or VGA adaptor as well. A theme that we will constantly consider will be how to best lead iOS integration in your building and district. What issues do you need to consider as a curriculum leader and what do you leave to the technology team. How do you move your staff from substitution to redefinition by sharing examples of creation with iOS tools as well as when skill acquisition is the job of the day. We will discuss what the iPad brings to your classrooms that enhances 21st century skill development. Think of the books that Harry Potter reads. Today we can create those for our iPads. We can gather and display text, images, and movies into a document we continue to call a book. Apple just released the most powerful publishing software since the printing press. Together lets explore how you can create textbooks in iBook Author. ePub files can also be created in the Pages program on your Mac. Explore the differences and what classroom projects your might want to integrate next fall. Discuss how to distribute books, create and share student projects and publishing for profit. Bring your MacBook/MacBook Pro running Lion OS 10.7 with iBook Author and Pages 11 loaded. Note: iBook Author is a free app, but you must have at least OS 10.7 to run it. Pages is a purchased app.

Using iPads to create presentations, movies, facetime, gather information, manipulate images can be exciting. The devil is in the details, moving files on and off device, creating workflows for student work, assessment and feedback. Working with free tools, we will explore solutions and share projects. Youve been using iPads in class, or are getting a classroom set to use occasionally, what are you going to do beyond drill math facts? Together well explore apps for creation, work flow for students without email accounts, strategies for getting more out of skill apps, and ways to increase student achievement using the iPads. Digital storytelling happens at all levels. How can you use iMovie on the iPad2 to have students create and share stories? What work flow issues do you need to consider and what movie making techniques can you share to help tell a better story? Stories can be traditional movies, or screen casts of math-science problems. Skill Apps are great, and their success is connected to how you are arranging class processes around app use. We will have a discussion of best practices and explore examples from

20 Apps and Sites That I Cant Teach Without June 14, 2012 ~all day Instructor: Kurt Reynolds, TRF Lincoln HS communications This will be taught on both Windows and Mac Platform. Learn to meet the millennials where theyre at with these 20 apps and sites in your classroom. These are the 20 apps that I could not possible imagine teaching without. Yet, I didnt use a third of them five years ago! Stay current with the newest apps and sites relevant to education. First, we will explore web apps such as Blogger, Wallwisher, Wiffiti, Polleverywhere, Zamzar, Twitter, Popplet, Slideshare, Scribd, Vuvox, Wikipedia, Khan Academy, Evernote, Dropbox, Youtube, iTunes U, Picassa, and so on. Second, you will be able to select which apps or sites work best for you and your classes. With that in mind, well work to help you develop a specific lesson plan featuring one of these apps or sites, so you can leave with an actual product that you can implement in your classroom.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 for Mac or PC July 26, 2012 ~ All day Instructor: Alice Hofstad, NWSC This will be taught on both Windows and Mac Platform. Learn to repair common photo flaws, fine tune your photos for color, brightness and contrast, learn to use levels, layers and layer masks, add curving text, add special effects to specific photo areas, create scrapbook pages, photo books, and slideshows, use PhotomergeScene Cleaner, share photos online, and more. Elements 10 has new features including curving text, painting on effects, turning photos into videos and more. If you are using a very old version, thinking about upgrading, or learning for the first time, this is the session for you.

TI-Nspire CX Calculator Workshop July 12, 2012~all day Instructor: Sharon Dailey, Texas Instruments T3 Regional Instructor, 30 yr. HS mathematics experience Intended Audience: Mathematics and Science Teachers Grades 7 12 (It is not necessary to have previous experience with the TI-Nspire technology. TI-Nspire CX handhelds will be available to for participant use at the workshop.) Technology: Texas Instruments TI-Nspire CX Computer Software, TI-Nspire CX handhelds, TI- Navigator, Vernier Temperature Probe Demonstration. Goal of Workshop: Provide participants with the opportunity to experience a colorful, more engaging way to explore mathematics and science. Real-world examples help students make connections. Description: Technology enhances student performance in mathematics and science. TI-Nspire technology combines enhanced graphing capabilities with computer features to provide an engaging way to explore concepts, extending beyond the capabilities of traditional calculators. This six hours of training will include the introduction and use of TI-Nspire CX handheld, TI-Nspire teacher software and TI-Navigator with TI-Nspire CX handhelds. The Navigator will be integrated into the workshop and used to transfer tns. documents, a self-check quiz, take polls, screen capture, make participants the presenter, send a quiz, collect the quiz from participants and analyze the results. A Vernier probe data collection will also be included in this workshop. Algebra will be the main focus and the use of the handheld to enhance understanding of algebraic concepts. Note: The CX model allows the use of color, if you already have the TI- Nspire, all Apps will work, the only difference is that color will appear in grayscale. The workshop will include the latest operating system which includes new science features as well as new mathematics related features.

Using Cell Phones in the Classroom: If You Cant Beat em, Join em. June 13, 2012 ~ All day Instructor: Kurt Reynolds, Thief River Falls HS Communications Instructor This will be taught on both Windows and Mac Platform. This class will focus on numerous ways to implement cell phones into your classes. First, teachers will not only discover practical ways to use their cell phones, but they will also learn of numerous applications and websites that will allow them to turn their students cell phones from a nuisance to a classroom necessity. Second, we will explore several of the available apps and websites. We will also learn how to apply these to our specific classes to engage students more fully. The apps include: Waffiti, Twitter, Yodio, Poll everywhere, Wall Wisher, Zoomerang, and Pandora. Third, there are other basic features that cell phones can offer educators. Some of the ones well explore: handheld scanner, white board archiver, being a digital witness, and reminder list. Finally, we will explore several websites from educators who actually practice what they preach and use cell phones as learning and teaching tools. Digital Photography for DSLR owners June 26, 2012 ~ All day Instructor: Alice Hofstad, NWSC This photography workshop is for the person who owns a digital, single lens reflex camera (DSLR). We will look at interchangeable lens--what might I want to own and why, using the basic controls and the creative controls for exposure (fstops, shutter speeds, depth of field), choosing ISO, and white balance. We will go thru the menus on your cameras and what they mean. There will be time to answer your questions. Participants should bring their camera and lens, memory card, and charged batteries. Microsoft Excel for Business: Beginning-Intermediate level July 25, 2012 ~ All day Instructor: Kyle Erickson, NWSC This will be taught on the Windows Platform at the TRF Chamber Lab on Highway 59 south. This session will provide hands-on, instructor led guidance in the use of Excel to perform a wide range of financial calculations. Starting with the basics of preparing a spreadsheet, participants will learn to create a workbook as well as a budget template. Learning to use Excel can also transfer to using the spreadsheet in Google Docs. Excel can also be used to create lists, such as an address list. All of these possibilities will be explored in this workshop. Google Apps for Business (Google Docs) July 10, 2012 ~ All day Instructor: Kyle Erickson, NWSC This will be taught on the Windows platform at the TRF Chamber Lab on Highway 59 south. Small business owners, if you are considering Google Docs for your business or wondering what all the hype is about, this workshop is for you! Google Sites- Its free, its fun, its easy. Google Sites makes creating and sharing a website easy. Dozens of pre-built templates are available to choose from or you can start from scratch. This platform can be used to share content with studentsone stop shopping. Here they can find exit tickets, pictures, announcements, weblinks, resources, calendar, classroom blogs, contact info, and more! Google Forms- The days of post it notes all over your teacher bag can be gone! Gone can be the days of half sheet exit tickets with student handwriting you can barely read. Gone are the days of passing out and picking up papers. Google Forms allows you to create open response, multiple choice, check box, etc., questions. Responses are automatically and immediately generated into a Google spreadsheet (much like an Excel spreadsheet). Google Forms allows you to quickly sort answers and read student explanations to better understand their misconceptions.

This is a web based application which works on either platform. Both are available in our lab. Do you use Moodle? Is your course set up as an endless scroll? In this course, we will show you how to design a course that looks like a web page that is easy for students to navigate. We will look at how to set up your course by using labels, creating web pages, and how to display a directory, just to name a few. If you have a textbook that comes with Examview CDs, we can show you how to turn those into quizzes. Moodle is one of the most flexible and powerful technology tools a teacher has at their disposal. We want to show you how to harness that power and turn it into a resource your students can use to make their learning more interactive and portable.

Moodle is a Course Management System (CMS), also known as a Learning Management System (LMS) or a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). It is a Free web application that educators can use to create effective online learning sites. In this course, you will learn the basic uses for Moodle and how to integrate the technology into your classes. We will look at ways to set up and design a course by uploading documents, setting up assignments, and linking to websites. We will also look at various ways to do online grading through quizzes that can be both formative and summative assessments. Bring your imagination

This session will do some of the legwork for you and introduce you to several useful productivity, networking, organizational, and product tools that will enhance your classroom and your life. Podcasting June 12, 2012 ~ All day Instructor: Kurt Reynolds, Thief River Falls HS Communications Instructor This will be taught on the Mac Platform. This session will introduce the world of podcasting. 1. Explore what a podcast is and where they can be found (using iTunes and sources such as podcastalley.com). 2. Discuss how to implement podcasts in our classes and use them in our lives. Examples will be provided. 3. Explore the basics of creating podcasts using GarageBand (part of Apples iLife) for audio podcasts and iMovie (part of Apples iLife) for video podcasts. All registrations must be received by June 1, 2012. Cancellations must be received three working days before each class begins. No refunds will be given on no-shows or cancellations received fewer than 3 days before each class. A paid registration is transferable in the event you are unable to attend.
