Wildlife Art comes alive at Gordale
THREE days of inspiring demonstrations by
award-winning artists will launch this years
National Exhibition of Wildlife Art (NEWA) at
the Gordale garden centre.
The UKs most published fine artist, PollyAnna
Pickering, will be just one of the stars of NEWAs
Wildlife Weekend running from 13th to 15th July.
The event will also provide another chance to see
contrasting woodcarvers Chris Hindley and Philip
Nelson working in tandem, bringing birds to life in
wildly difering ways, before your very eyes!
Cheshire and North Wales will be further
represented by internationally collected artists
Claire Shaughnessy and
linocut specialist Thelma
Sykes.
Each day of Wildlife
Weekend, will provide a
chance to see 3 or 4 talented
wildlife artists from all over
the Northwest, and beyond,
showing and sharing their
skills alongside the stunning
exhibition itself.
Each summer, this
delightfully informal
exhibition, housed in the
natural light of Gordales
ephemeral NEWA gallery,
provides an experience
the whole family can enjoy
for free. With its vibrant
presentation of almost 400
paintings, drawings and
sculptures, the exhibition
has regularly drawn over
17,000 visitors, making it
Britains largest open, selling
exhibition of wildlife art.
This years show runs from
July 13th to 29th, so why not
come along and see a world
of wildlife brought alive by a
charm of gifted artists.

they also held their reception. The brides family hail from Heswall.
Labour take Wirral but Heswall stays Conservative
Labour had a good night in the recent local elections, taking overall control of Wirral
Council from the Conservatives and Lib Dems.
Labour now have 37 seats on the council against 22 for the Conservatives and seven
Liberal Democrats.
In Heswall ward long standing Conservative councillor Peter Johnson comfortably held
on, polling nearly 2,000 more than his Labour rival.

Karens coastline art on show
HESWaLL artist Karen Gilbert has put her paintings of the Wirral coastline on display
to the public.
Karens exhibition at Dee Fine arts, on Telegraph road, featured paintings along the
Thurstaston shoreline and the country parks on the peninsula.
Her preferred medium is acrylic and she enjoys exploring different methods of applying
the paint to sometimes give a three-dimensional feel to the work.

WIrraL university Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, based at Clatterbridge,
has been awarded a Gold ribbon accreditation by the NHS Sport and Physical activity
Challenge for its commitment to improving staff health and wellbeing.
The Trusts Fitter for Health programme was designed to support and encourage its
staff to take part in a regular sport or physical activity.

Woolgatherers of Heswall are presenting the
third production of their 71st season this month.
anagram of Murder, by Seymour Matthews,
tells the story of Veronica, who has decided
to murder her writer husband, Gus. However,
when Gus discusses the plot of his new novel
with her she is alarmed to discover that this is
uncomfortably close to her murder plans.
Veronica presses ahead but things do not run
entirely smoothly and when the police report the
fnding of a body the frst problem for Detective
Inspector Morgan is: who is it? There follow
several twists and surprises before the guilty are
brought to justice.

HESWaLL man Ian Cochran is inviting adult stammerers to contact Ian and consider
joining one of his four-day workshops with facilities and a dedicated venue.
From an early age we all learn how to talk but somewhere along the journey some of
us unintentionally and inexplicably stumble daily in our speaking world, and begin a life
of emotional trauma.
Ian says that starting Lost for Words workshops will confront the everyday diffculties
that stammering produces.
Sufferers who feel able, or are encouraged by family and friends to step outside their
comfort zone will meet the challenge of speaking without hesitation head-on.
Each Workshop requires a commitment from Tuesday to Friday in Heswall.
Ian said: Its ironic that, in this Diamond Jubilee year that I realise that I have had
a stammer for 60 years. My stammer rarely bothers me now and its no longer an
infuence on how I live my life. Confronting and minimising my original severe stammer
in childhood has driven me to launch this project for my retirement years.
The Kings Speech flm has helped raise awareness of a problem that dominates
every stammerers daily life.
To really overcome stammering takes a huge amount of courage, hard work and
perseverance. For those truly motivated will fnd my approach worth the commitment.
Ians involvement is to provide each workshop for 10 per person to cover
administration costs only. Numbers will be limited to six adults. Please email your

This young all white male cat came to us as a stray. Can you offer him his ideal
home? He is very friendly and loves attention. An experienced cat owner is
needed as he sometimes gets overexcited and will give you a little nip but
usually it is only in play. Because of this we would not consider homing him with
a family with young children
Bex is about two years old he is neutered, vaccinated and micro chipped.

Stanley is three years old and very friendly. Unfortunately Stanley has the FIV
virus so must be kept as an indoor cat. He will make a very loyal and loving
companion. He follows his fosterer around everywhere and when she sits down
Stanley thinks it is especially so he can sit on her lap. Stanley is the perfect
companion, he is happiest on your knee, or on the newspaper you are trying to
read.

Blue is this handsome boy is a bit on the nervous side but then who wouldn't
be after finding himself shut out of his home in the coldest of weather, when
his owner moved out and left him behind.

June is a lovely month when the
summer fowers come into their
own, there may be frst harvest
of new potatoes and fresh salad
leaves from the vegetable patch.
Flowering plants to look out
for in June are shrubs such
as Philadelphus (Mock
Orange) with some
varieties having
scented fowers.
Try Belle Etoile,
Virginal with
white fowers
or Philadelphus
coronarius Aureus
with golden yellow
foliage and scented
white fowers. They
will grow well in most
soils in sun or light shade.
If you have poor dry soil in
sun and want a shrub that will cope, try the
Cistus Grayswood Pink, or Cistus x purpureus
both of which have bright pink fowers.
The varieties Cistus Snow Fire and Cistus x
aguilarii Maculatus have white fowers with
maroon spots at the base of each petal.
For those with a moist soil look out for
Viburnum plicatum Lanarth or Mariesii with
tiers of horizontal branches with lacecaps of
white fowers in May and June.
Roses will be fowering in June and look
great underplanted with lavender if you
have dry soil or drifts of Alliums. Allium
christophii with large round heads of starry
purple fowers or Allium Globemaster which
is taller at about 75cm. They will come
up year after year and dry well for
winter decorations.
Geraniums are great for
ground cover with the
pink fowered Geranium
endressii, blue fowered
Geranium himalayese
Gravetye or Geranium
macrorrhizum Album. The
last one will even fower in
dry shade.
In the vegetable garden you
will need to look out for blackfy
on broad beans I spray with
soapy water to get rid of them. Remove
side shoots from growing tomatoes and tie
them in to the supporting canes as they grow.
You can sow seeds of French beans and
courgettes to fll spaces from spent crops and
give you a late crop at the end of summer.
Continue sowing salad seeds such as
rocket, lambs lettuce, radishes or lettuce for
continuous cropping.
