He said: 'I thought I'd be a soccer player but my mother said I should be a hairdresser, and, as often happens, the mother got her way.' He single handedly ended the desire for '50s structured 'dos which required hot rollers, oodles of maintenance and more time than women had. First came the bob, then the pixie crop and later the Greek goddessa short, tousled perm. With his credentials rmly established, Vidal built up an empire of salons and products which used the tagline: 'If you don't look good, we don't look good.' He was the rst to put his name to a line and in doing so paved the way for celebrity hair stylists such as Nicky Clarke, who paid tribute to 'truly one of the greatest icons of hairdressing,' he would be one of the top ve swinging '60s icons along with The Beatles, Carnaby Street, Mary Quant and the Union Jack.'

He was one of the greatest icons in hairdressing

The chances are, if you're sporting an e ortless hairdo, regularly visit salons and buy designer hair products in bulk, then it's probably due to Vidal Sassoon. One of the most recognised names in the fashion industry, Vidal died last week aged 84 after a three year battle with leukaemia.
Page 32

Since opening his rst salon in 1954, celebrity clients have included Hollywood legends Ava Gardner, Elizabeth Taylor and '60s sex kittens Jean Shrimpton and Mia Farrow. His most famous creation was the angular bob that he created for Mary Quant. Liberating ladies from their bou ants and beehives, women all over the world were soon asking for the iconic chop. Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon Talk to OK. When Alesha Dixon ditches Strictly Come Dancing to be a judge on Britain's Got Talent, it couldn't have been the most comfortable move of her career. But Simon Cowell decided to turn up the pressure even more on his new starlet. The talent show has been battling against the BBC's The Voice for weeks with the two shows going head to head leading up to BGT's grand nal last weekend. 'I wasn't as nervous joining BGT as I was joining Strictly because when I joined Strictly, I was replacing Arlene,' Alesha tells OK. Here, Alesha joins her co-judge Amanda Holden to talk to OK about the awkward divide Carmen Electra caused between Simon and the rest of the BGT judges, the possibility of being axed from next year's series, and how Simon bonded with Amanda's adorable four month old baby Hollie actually higher in urban areas than rural ones, even if the pollen is down because air pollutions enhances the e ects.

Whilst basking in grassy parks may be far from our minds, this doesn't mean that hay fever can be ignored.
Most important, says Professor Emberlin, is not to trivialise the condition: 'Talk to your GP and control it or it will get worse every year as the immune system weakens. After a while it will take less pollen to trigger symptoms and could end up developing into asthma.' While medication and treatment will control symptoms, several lifestyle choices can help...

Sneezy does it How the stars ght their allergies Not that we needed another reason to despise the current chilly temperatures and washed-out weather, but this spring has prompted a rush on winter remedies. Asda has reported and 85 percent increase in sales of cold and u medicines compared to the same time last year. Whilst basking in grassy parks may be far from our minds, this doesn't mean that hay fever can be ignored. Quite the oppositeGPs are advising su erers to stock up on treatments before symptoms appear.
Page 30

Alesha, why was there tension between you and Carmen Electra on the panel? AD It wasn't that we didn't get along, but she was just concentrating on irting with Simon. David [Walliams] and I were making comments like 'you two should get a room.'
OK

'Hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollen and spores in the air. It a ects some people and not others.' explains Professor Jean Emberlin. 'Symptons include a blocked nose, sneezy, itchy red eyes and tiredness.' While symptoms are the same whatever the cause, the season is separated into three main sectionstree pollen from late March to mid May, grass pollen from mid May to July, and weed pollen from the end of June to September. And as city su erers will be aware, cases are

We were in the audience when Carmen was judging in London. We did feel a bit sorry for her, because everyone kept booing. AD And shouting out 'bring back Amanda.' AH I hate that. It's just awful.

Everyone expected you to be at war with each other AH I hate how with shows like this, the judges' own PR departments start these rivalry rumours. And, no disrespect to you, but lots of journalists kept the re burning. For women this is a tough industry to survive in. We should be comrades. The shows should be about the contestants not about the relationships between the judges. AD But don't you think Simon is softer on Britain's Got Talent than he is on The X Factor? AH Oh yes totally, this is who he really is.

I think they're a good match, although I couldn't handle being royalty, life would completely change. The palace probably wouldn't like her dressing all sexy for The Saturdays videos would they? Russell Brand has reportedly said that splitting from Katy Perry was a big mistake. I like them as a couple, but they weren't together long before they split. There's a reason why you break up in the rst place, so it's probably better to move onand they do move fast in Hollywood. I've been reading lately that Richard Branson is planning on sending people into space in rockets. Loads of celebs like Brad and Angelina want to go, but there's no chance I'd do that. A plane's scary enough, never mind going to outer space. I believe in things like ghosts and it'd be naive to think there's no life forms on other planets, but that doesn't mean I'd want to meet any. No thanks I'll stick to Dubai...

Page 29

Amanda, we know you brought Hollie on set. Did Simon get broody around her? AH Oh yeh he's even changed a couple of nappies! [Laughs] No, he has been very sweet. He's been more interested in my new dog if I'm honest.

Alex Gerrard Needs some alone time with Steven I'm o on my holiday to Dubai this with Steven. It's the rst time I've left Lourdes, so I'm a bit nervous. I can't wait for some sun and for us to have some alone time togetherI won't be moving from the sunlounger the entire time. I need a holiday after last weekend, when I threw a party for Lexi's sixth birthday. There were 30 kids and the theme was 'pop stars and divas.' Lily was dressed as Rihanna and Lexi as Beyonc. They look like those kids out of MY Big Fat Gypsy Wedding, it was hilarious. I'm xated on the John Travolta story in the press. There have always been unfounded rumours that he's gay, and I think it's really sad if he has to hide it because of his career. But can someone really live a lie like that? It's such a big thing to carry around. I love the Mollie King and Prince Harry saga. She's now said he's out of her leagueMollie's talking about it a lot and I wonder whether it's all a cover up because they're actually together! But Simon can be ruthless AH I don't think he's ruthless. I think it's good simon did this year was give the show a good kick up the arse, which is what it needed. AD But, Amanda there's a reason you've been here for six years. AH Well I might not be here next year and if Simon decided that I would totally respect his decision. I'm already on my bonus year, because I originally said I'd do ve years We'll just have to wait and see.

Mario Balotelli Speaks out He's been dubbed mad, bad and dangerous to knownot to mention 'all that's wrong with football'but the world would be a duller place without Mario Balotelli, the headline hogging MAnchester City superstar. Whether he's collecting 10,000 of parking tickets for leaving his Bentley on double yellow lines, romping with Wayne Rooney's escort ing or driving around Manchester dressed as Santa and handing out 20 notes there's never a dull moment around the Italian who celebrated scoring against Manchester United by unveiling a cheeky t-shirt emblazoned 'Why Always Me.' Among Mario's most memorable moments, the star reportedly handed 1,00 to a homeless man after winning at the casino, set him some alight after shooting reworks from his bathroom window, drove his Mercedes into the grounds of a women's prison, and after meeting a young truant outside the City training ground, drove him back to school with his mother, and Who's the biggest A-lister you have met? LC Mickey Rourke, who is actually a close friend as well. You know it's going to be a wild night with Mickey if you like vodka shots. I remember one at the Wellington Club where he has his own Mickey Rourke room. On the red carpet I've interviewed Hollywood A-listers like Kate Winslet who is probably the nicest Oscarwinning actress ever. No airs or graces, just down to earth. Colin Farrell is always up for a pint of Guiness and asking you out after an interview.

demanded a showdown with the boy who was reportedly bullying his new young friend. Those in Manchester, which has taken Mario to its heart, say everyone has a story about the eccentric star. But how much is true and how much is urban myth. Dissapointingly, Mario has denied the stories of handing out cash to beggars, driving around Manchester dressed as Santa and escorting treating young boys back to school. But he admits that it is true that when his mum sent him to John Lewis to buy an ironing board, he returned with a quad bike, a scalextric and a trampoline. He admits: 'If you look at me from the outside, and don't know me you think I'm an idiot. Let the glamour commence.

Rihanna Parties a little too hard We're used to Rihanna tweeting some pretty scandalous pictures of joints, her naked form, lapdancing and provocative tattoos, but who could have predicted her latest snap of an intravenous drip? Well, white a few people actually. Friends are said to be sick with worry after following non-stop travelling and excessive partying and fear she may end up in rehab if she doesn't take it easy. And rather than resting after being discharged, she went straight to the premiere of Battleship in LA. 'I'm crazy and I don't pretend to be anything else' she said. Meanwhile she's said to be up to her old tricks after she was reportedly spotted kidding American football player Darren McFadden who has a girlfriend. Perhaps she needs a new plaything, since unfollowing ex-boyfriend Chris Brown on Twitter after he apparently mocked her lyrics in his new single.
