Newcastle Business School MBA

Why is our MBA B Different?

To be able to take on challenging roles at senior levels in todays fast moving and competitive business environment, managers need a solid grasp of how all of the functional areas of the business interact; but they also need skills in researching information, working with teams of people, and in communicating their ideas and convincing others.

We believe the Newcastle Business School MBA is different because it helps you to prepare for the next phase of your chosen career equipping you with the skills and confidence to progress to the very highest levels.
The programme is very practical and very flexible so that you get the space to reflect on your development needs and the opportunities to practice your researching, reasoning, decisionmaking and communication skills with realistic business scenarios, as well as having the opportunities to encounter cutting edge business thinking from senior practitioners.

Youll learn and develop through a variety of stimulating methods including seminars, tutorials, visits, residentials, consultancy study meetings and guest lectures. Above all, youll bring your own business experiences to the learning process benefiting from time and space to reflect on weaknesses, develop your strengths, and map out a personal development plan for a successful future. The Newcastle Business School MBA places particular emphasis upon reflection on personal goals and abilities, providing you with the tools and frameworks to help develop you as an adaptable and confident professional.

Who is our MBA for?

Our MBA students are usually between 25 and 45 years old. You may have a first degree in business or management, but commonly have a non-business degree such as engineering, finance, science or IT. You will have three or more years of work experience, usually in a supervisory or management role and will be keen to invest in a programme that gives you the skills and knowledge to progress your career to more senior levels. You will be looking for the opportunity to use the MBA programme as a stepping-stone to a new career. You will be intelligent, articulate, confident, ambitious and motivated to share your experiences with others and commit to a challenging educational experience. Many of you joining the programme will have considerably more experience than our minimum requirement, so the programme brings together experienced people from a wide variety of business and cultural backgrounds. This in itself provides an important part of the learning and development experience, with the opportunities to consider approaches to business problems and opportunities in new and stimulating ways.

Our philosophy
Studying for a Newcastle Business School MBA will challenge you and your outlook. The overall aim of the programme is to develop your managerial and leadership capabilities so that you can help your organisation become more effective and efficient in a rapidly changing, complex and knowledge based economy. Our philosophy derives from the reflective practice and experiential learning. As a Newcastle Business School MBA student, you will diagnose problems, research and retrieve information and apply insight from powerful conceptual models to develop and evaluate solutions. By the end of the programme, you will have become a reflective and strategic thinker with an international outlook and a body of contemporary knowledge in skills relating to business and organisations, organisational research and change management.

International Study Mission

Expanding your horizons on an international Study Mission
At Newcastle Business School were fortunate in welcoming a diverse and vibrant MBA community from all over the world. The one week study mission included in your full-time course fees extends your international experience still further recently including inspiring visits to South Africa, the Czech Republic, Germany, Canada, Hungary and Austria.
We select partners from multinational and local businesses in a broad range of service and manufacturing sectors. Its your chance to spend time with key business thinkers, industry leaders and entrepreneurs before taking part in student workshops to debate the contrasting business models you encounter and associated theory. For us, understanding and appreciating other cultures is a key factor for success in international markets. Thats why we always ensure theres time for guided talks and other cultural experiences during your study mission stay.

Being an international student, the study mission was a truly fantastic experience for me, both professionally and personally. Exposing me to different methods of doing business across Europe (Austria & Hungary), along with an understanding of the influencing socio-economic factors, in my view shall be very useful in my future career. Personally, learning about great European cultures, visiting beautiful cities and bonding with my classmates and tutors, are memories I shall cherish forever.
Anjani Kant, MBA student from India

There was much more than studying in the event; what makes it distinctive for me, was not only beautiful cities and company visits, but lots of opportunities to explore cultural differences, as well as getting to know the great people that are our fellow students and tutors.
Nazli Nejadsattari, MBA student from Iran

The Study Mission was a wonderful experience. It helped us to see the opportunities and challenges in the real world of business and also the dichotomy between theory and practice.
Sarath Subu Chandrasekar, MBA student from India

Live Consultancy Projects

Learning through live Consultancy
In the second semester we offer you the opportunity to compare theory with practice and demonstrate various essential business skills, particularly leadership and team working, by undertaking a live, group-based consultancy project with a local company.
This is an alternative to the taught options on our MBA programme and consistent with our philosophy of reflective practice. Partners weve worked with in the past include local businesses, as well as multinational corporations such as Procter & Gamble (P&G), who first identify a specific business or organisational problem requiring a practical and achievable solution. Your host organisation will provide a project briefing and review, supported by appropriate academic guidance from a Newcastle Business School project supervisor. In return, your group of typically four to five students, will provide the client organisation with a detailed, 4,000-word business report alongside a presentation of findings and recommendations. Much of the market research, business strategy and HRM consultancy delivered by our students has been subsequently used to good effect by participating firms. This kind of live project work provides an ideal grounding for any MBA student interested in pursuing a career in business consulting.

Residential Weekends
Learning beyond the classroom on Residential Weekends
Two residential weekends enable full-time MBA students to exchange ideas and develop skills with part-time MBA colleagues in relaxed, convivial surroundings. The first of these enables you to reflect and build upon your managerial development assessing your learning style and ability to work effectively in teams. The second focuses on a business simulation which will see you building and running a major virtual corporation in groups. This is your opportunity to put theory into practice and discover just how difficult it is to manage large, complex organisations.

Developing Self

Residential Weekend 1:
The development of leadership capability is the main focus of postgraduate study at Newcastle Business School. So within the first few weeks of starting your MBA programme, both full-time and part-time students come together in a hotel-based weekend residential to begin your journey to becoming the managers and leaders you aspire to be. As part of the Leaders and their Context module, the residential provides you with the opportunity to put into practice the leadership and team building theories and frameworks to which youve been introduced in the classroom. Youll also have the opportunity to put to good use the findings from diagnostic toolkits such as Belbin, Insights, and a variety of leadership and management competency questionnaires. This leadership development is achieved through a series of activities, involving working together in various multi-cultural teams to find solutions

to the problems and challenges that youll be set. With periods for review and reflection, these tasks provide you with the opportunity to experience and analyse your own, and others, leadership and team working approaches. You will work with your tutors back in the classroom to identify a set of personal objectives and learning areas which can be worked on in the remaining weeks of the module, and thereafter to form part of a development plan. This development plan provides the basis from which students embark on our career development module in semester two. Students say that this residential is one of the highlights of the entire programme, providing a springboard for their personal and professional development. Youll leave the weekend with a comprehensive overview of your leadership and team-building strengths, together with identified areas for development. Not only that, this residential provides valuable networking opportunities as well as being very enjoyable.

Residential Weekend 2:
Business Simulation
A vital part of a managers development is a realisation of their ability to lead, and be part of, a team. The vehicle for involving the MBA students in explicit team working is the Business Simulation. Essentially the Business Simulation is a game, where teams of students compete against each other within an existing and established market setting. The game involves the teams making round-by-round decisions which are submitted to a computer based simulation programme. You will be allocated into teams and the game is a hotelbased residential event, removed from everyday university life. You will develop a detailed understanding of how the four key business functions of operations, finance, marketing and human resources integrate to underpin and aid the implementation of organisational strategy, whilst aspects of team working around both the roles of the individual and collective decision making build upon and reinforce your learning from the first residential event earlier in the MBA programme. From a social perspective, the residential event provides the opportunity for the full-time and part-time students to meet, work together and network. This is particularly beneficial to the full-time students, many of whom are international, and as such, welcome the opportunity to work alongside their British counterparts.

The Newcastle Business School MBA has shaped me professionally and personally, enabling me to fit into any industry. In fact, its been more than a course its a personal development plan and a springboard for a bright future
Vignesh Yoganathan
Awarded MBA in September 2010, studying for a PhD in Marketing/Public Sector Branding, and now part-time lecturer at Newcastle Business School.
I chose the Newcastle Business School MBA because it can be completed over a year, as opposed to some which are longer. Other MBAs are also more expensive. Id completed my Marketing degree at Northumbria so knew the quality of the facilities and the staff, who were instrumental in convincing me to invest. The academics here have since encouraged me to study for a PhD. The MBA course is very intense, particularly in the first semester. In the second, I was much more confident. The teaching team has the best people for specialist topics combining industry experience and academic rigour. The Business Simulation weekend was great fun, involving teamwork, decision making, and all aspects of managing a large company. The Newcastle Business School MBA has shaped me professionally and personally, enabling me to fit into any industry. In fact, its been more than a course its a personal development plan and a springboard for a bright future.

Staff have gone out of their way to ensure the learning experience is of the highest quality for example always acting on student feedback. Residential events have been particularly well thought through to maximise the learning experience for everyone
Neil Parkin
Studying for MBA, 30 years industry experience in operations and design.
I opted for the MBA at Newcastle Business School because it has a reputation for giving students current and relevant knowledge to help them get a job in their chosen field. This degree will provide me with greater understanding of research in business an area I intend to pursue in the future. Staff have gone out of their way to ensure the learning experience is of the highest quality for example always acting on student feedback. Residential events have been particularly well thought through to maximise the learning experience for everyone. Being a postgraduate is always interesting and challenging. I find the seminars particularly helpful as lecturers encourage us to read around the subject and engage fully within the sessions to understand issues in more depth and breadth. The learning experience at Newcastle Business School is rewarding, and students learn skills that match the needs of todays businesses. The MBA also requires students to draw on their previous experience. Looking ahead, Im aiming to secure a research grant later in the year to conduct research in a specific area in business.

The most important benefit of my MBA course is that its helped me to adopt an internationally accepted common language among my peers in a multi-cultural context
Gui Li
Studying for MBA, completed undergraduate degree in China.
The most important benefit of my MBA course is that its helped me to adopt an internationally accepted common language among my peers in a multi-cultural context. Before this, Id been educated and worked only in China. Its also totally renewed my theoretical knowledge in management and refined my previous experience giving me a global perspective thus offering greater potential for future progress. Last but not the least, the course has brought me a lot of wonderful new friends and business connections. The most amazing part of the learning experience has been the seminars. They were well organised to make us fully grasp the underlying meaning and application behind the theory. We got involved in comprehensive discussions and then explored the topics. The residential management development weekends and the business trip also broadened my management expertise not to mention the fun we had! Staff at Newcastle Business School have given me so much help and support. When I first came, the induction sessions helped me to sort out everything. Then the pre-sessional English course taught us not only English skills, but also how to use those skills in an academic environment. Most importantly, the Academic Skills Seminars are simply incredible. You can literally find answers to any problems that international students may meet.

The MBA programme has benefited me by teaching content from a managerial, rather than purely theoretical, perspective
Nils Steuber
Id already studied at Newcastle Business School during an undergraduate term abroad attracted by the state-of-the-art facilities and IT infrastructure. So I knew Northumbria University well. The MBA programme has benefited me by teaching content from a managerial, rather than purely theoretical, perspective. Its something Im confident will support my future career in general management. Staff support has been tremendous, from the application process right through my studies. Both academic and administrative staff are always available. Being a postgraduate here is a very positive experience and the programme has fully lived up to expectations. Newcastle is a great city for students there are around 50,000 here and its fairly cheap compared to other cities. There are also a lot of things to do outside the University, including great opportunities for travelling and exploring other areas in the UK. When it comes to jobs, Ive already been offered a position as a buyer with one of the biggest food retailers in Germany. Its an opportunity that came up when I visited a career fair in Germany during semester break but Ive not really started applying seriously as yet. My advice for prospective MBA students? Just go for it!.
