Savages return nucleus on diamond

With the loss of only two starters from last years team, veteran Lamar High School baseball coach Dave Fassiotto has some high expectations for this years season. Lamar is coming off a 17-7 record last year. The Savages rode a 12-game winning streak into the Class 3A state tournament held in Greeley, Colo. Lamar won its first game of the double-elimination state tournament with a 6-3 victory over Bennett before losing to Eaton, 9-0, and to Hotchkiss, 5-1. This season, the Savages are off a 6-2 start and ranked No. 8 in the Class 3A state ranking by the Denver Post. The Savages won their first five games against Alamosa (25-3), Florence (10-3), Weld Central (8-4), Pueblo Central (10-6) and Pueblo Centennial (28-3) before losing to defending Class 2A state champion Rye (10-9). Lamar opened Tri-Peaks League East Division play against the rival La Junta Tigers on Friday, March 30 at Merchants Park. The Savages won the first game, 9-3, before losing the second game in gutwrenching fashion, 2-1. The loss was the first league setback for Lamar in 29

we have depth. We have guys that we can move around who are pretty versatile players. Lamar pitching staff will feature Thomas Fierro, a senior right hander; Jordan Sena, a senior left hander; Isiah Martinez, a senior right hander; Casey Fassiotto, a junior right hander; Kelby Fassiotto, a junior right hander; and Jordan Jara, a sophomore right hander. Pitching is going to be one of assets, said Fassiotto. I think were pretty deep with our pitching than we were last year. Weve got four guys who can start at anytime. Senior Branson Jennings returns for his second season as the starting catcher and his experience will be a valuable asset to how the pitching staff performs this season. The Lamar High School track teams start the season with another large turnout. Lamar head coach Austin Wertz welcomed a total of 70 athletes for this years teams including 23 female athletes and 47 male athletes. With a mix of youth and experience, Wertz said its too early to see how things will shape up. It takes about two or three meets to really see what events the kids fit in, said Wertz. The Lamar girls and boys teams got the season off to a great start as they swept the team titles in their own Lamar Invitational on March 24 and the Burlington Invitational on March 31. Hopefully it is a preview of what may unfold for the rest of the season. Weve had some very good performances from both our girls and boys and theyve did a fantastic job, said Lamar

Wildcats making strides in track

By John Contreras The Lamar Ledger

Under the guidance of head coach Catherine Hodgson, the Holly High School girls and boys track team has made some strides. The Wildcats qualified a total of eight athletes to the inaugural Class 1A state meet a year ago and brought home their fair share of state hardware. Manuel Tarango made some noise as a sophomore in the distance races. He finished second in the 1,600 run to senior Tyler Barela of Sierra Grande. Barela ran a time of 4:50.66 and Tarangos time was 4:52.22. In the 3,200 run, Micah Tate, a junior from Pikes Peak, won the state championship with a time of 10:36.06, while Tarango ran a time of 10:47.47. Another state placer returning will be sophomore Ashlyn Hess, who placed seventh in the 3,200 run as a freshman. Hollys 400 meter relay team also placed fourth at the state meet last year and returns two members of that team in senior Kenzi Tefertiller and Hess. Hodgson, who heads into her fourth year as the head coach, has seven girls and 18 boys out for this years team. She said some of the top girls returning will include Tefertiller, Hess, sophomores Sheridan Rushton and Lacey Darnell, and freshman Hannah Kalma. Tefertiller will compete in the long jump, shot put, discus and relays. Hess will run the 3,200 run as well as competing in the jumping events and relays. Rushton will compete in the 800 run, triple jump, high jump, and relays. Darnell will compete in the throwing events as well as competing in relays. Kalma will compete in the 800 run, triple jump, and relays. Besides Tarango, the Holly boys team returns two state placers in senior Robert Darnell and sophomore Jason Barth. Darnell was ninth in the

With the retirement of longtime head coach Bruce Roup, the Holly High School baseball team will be under the guidance of new coach Casey Hines. Hines isnt new to the program after serving as a volunteer assistant in 2010 and as the assistant coach in 2011. He brings vast experience and knowledge of the game to the Holly program. Hines played four years on the varsity for the La Junta High School Tigers as an outfielder, infielder (shortstop), and pitcher. He then played for two years at Otero Jr. College and from there went on to play one year as an infielder at Northwestern Oklahoma State University. Hines went on to play two years in the Colorado SemiPro Baseball League as an infielder. It feels good to finally be the head coach of a baseball team, he said. Im excited. With a new athletic complex under construction on the Holly School grounds, the team will play their home games in Granada this season. The team also has been practicing on a field on the west end of Holly which is not regulation. Its been a little stressful not having a regulation field to practice on, said Hines. But were making it work. Hines inherits a team that lost some key players to graduation. We had a lot of seniors on the team last year and most of them were dominant players in our league, he said. Now, were just trying to find some new players to fill positions. Hines will be looking at an entire new pitching staff as well as filling spots at second base, shortstop, and several positions in the outfield. Holly has 18 candidates out for this years team including five seniors, four juniors, four sophomores, and five freshman. The pitching staff for the Wildcats will include three seniors: Stetson Rushton, Fabian Rodriquez, and Tanner Barth. Hines will also look to juniors Alex Rodriquez and Joseph Parker; sophomore Eddie Rodriquez; and freshmen

Colby Salisbury and Oscar Calderon to seed duty on the mound. Weve got a lot to work to do with our pitching, said Hines. We dont have a dominant arm like we did last year in All-State pitcher Richard Hernandez. But weve got kids who can throw 30 or 40 pitches and just need to see who can throw strikes. Junior Sy Donaldson and Joseph Parker will handle the catching duties behind home plate The infield will be solid behind Tanner Barth at first base; Eddie Rodriquez at second base; Alex Rodriquez at third base; and sophomore Jason Barth at shortstop. Also seeing work in the infield will be sophomore Drew Thompson as well as Bailey Kennedy, Oscar Calderon, Haydden Humburg, and Mason Pierce, all freshmen. I think our infield is going to be pretty good, said Hines. Obviously, Im going to have a lot of passion with the infield. If we can make the routine plays, that leads to spectacular plays. Hines will have a number of players to choose from in the outfield. Freshman Colby Salisbury has been tabbed as the starter in left field. Rotating in center field will be seniors Fabian Rodriquez and Stetson Rushton and sophomore Christian Orozco in center field. Playing in right field will be junior Porter Salisbury. Seniors Jesus Sanez and Billy Dennis add some depth in the outfield. Asked about the offense, Hines said, We dont have a lot power, but what weve got is speed and guys who can John Contreras The Lamar Ledger make contact. New coach takes over program

By John Contreras The Lamar Ledger

With the loss of only two senior starters, the Granada High School baseball team returns a nucleus of players for the 2012 season. Veteran head coach Manuel Gonzales has 14 players out including seven returning starters. We return seven starters and Im excited about the season, said Gonzales. The biggest question concerning the Bobcats will be who will emerge as the ace of the pitching staff. Coach Gonzales will be counting on juniors Saul Perez, Dillon Bohlander, Bryan Gonzales, Kolby Palmer, and freshman Cruz Vega to shoulder the load on the mound. Weve got some veteran pitchers and they threw last year for us besides Cruz, Gonzales said. I expect them to be better this year and really feel we will have one of the better pitching staffs in our league. Saul is our top pitcher right now and has had the most control in practice. Behind the plate, the Bobcats will be solid with the likes of Perez, Gonzales, and freshman Koy Palmer. The infield returns intact and should be tough. Senior Brady Rink returns at first base and will be flanked by juniors Tanner Grasmick and Derek Smith, who will share duty at second base. Playing shortstop when not pitching will be Gonzales or Perez. Rotating at third base will be senior Tony Esquibel and juniors Sam Rink and Dillon Bohlander. The outfield will be patrolled by some outstanding athletes in juniors Brynden Burns and Fabian Tovar in left field. When not ptiching Kolby Palmer will be in center field and share duty there with his brother Koy, a freshman. Cruz Vega will play in right field and share time with junior Chase Holdren. Defensively, weve got nine guys who can field the ball, said Gonzales. But we need to get better at the plate. Granada will compete in Class 1A District 3 against Baca County, Eads, Springfield,

John Contreras The Lamar Ledger

Junior Saul Perez, who pitches, catches, and plays shortstop, will be a vital cog in the success of the Granada baseball team this season.

A new but familiar face will take over as the new head coach of the Granada High School girls and boys track teams. Junior Gonzales welcomed a good number of athletes out for the season. I have 27 kids with boys and girls combined, he said. Were looking at just improving from last year. With the new 1A classification adopted last year, that gives the kids a little bit more inspiration and desire to come out for track and compete. Right now, were just trying to get everyone in competitive shape, he said. As the season progresses I look for improvement. With the new method of qualifying for the state meet, every meet counts. Our kids know that and hopefully that gives them John Contreras The Lamar Ledger more motivation. Baca County returns six starters

By Dick Peecher The Lamar Ledger

Baca County co-head coaches Curtis Schroeder and Ronny Tate have worked together since 2006 and it has been a successful union of coaches. The Baca County Bombers went undefeated in District 3 play posting an 8-0 record. In the District 3 tournament held in Las Animas, the Bombers advanced to the championship game where they fell to Holly, 8-4. Baca County saw its season come to a disappointing end when the Bombers fell to eventual two-time state champion Stratton, 4-3, in nine innings in the Class 1A regional tournament in Denver.

Baca County was leading the game against Stratton heading into the seventh inning and the Bombers will use that defeat as inspiration for this season.

Coach DJ Weidrich, in his third year as head track coach at McClave, welcomed 23 athletes out for track this season. They are divided evenly with 12 boys and 11 girls. The boys team made some noise at the recent Lamar Invitational, finishing eighth in the 24-team field. The Cardinals return two boys who placed at state a year ago in senior Tate Mauser and junior Dillan Kelley. Mauser has missed most of his senior year with a severe knee injury he suffered in the first game of the football season.

Lack of numbers not discouraging

He has been rehabbing for quite some time, said Weidrich. We dont know about the discus because of the spinning, but I am happy for him that he is able to compete this spring. We think he has a great chance of doing something at state. Mauser was third in the shot put in the first Class 1A state meet a year ago. He also placed eighth in the discus. Mauser finished second in the shot put in the Lamar meet with a throw of 47-feet, a personal best for Mauser. He already broke his own school record in that event. Kelley was just out of the running for a medal in the state meet last year. He finished ninth in the 300 hurdles. He was fourth at Lamar, running the second best 1A time there. He was also third in the 200 dash at Lamar. Making a lot of noise in Lamar was Gabe Longworth. He was second in the 200 dash, eighth in the 100 dash, and seventh in the 400 dash, quite a day for a freshman. Weidrichs son, Ashur, could be a consistent point earner in the 1,600 run.

We are looking at a lot of options right now, said the McClave coach. We could have a couple of decent relays, possibly the 800 or 1600, if we chose, but that is what is good about the early season. Freshman T.J. Trujillo looks good in the quarter (400). We will just have to see. The girls, who failed to score at Lamar, will be led by senior Melissa Navarrette. She didnt compete in Lamar, as she was playing in an All-State senior basketball game. Navarrette was seventh in the long jump a year ago at the state meet and ninth in the 200 dash. She will be our leader, said Weidrich. Though she failed to place in the top eight, transfer student Breanna Semonds broke the school record in the 1,600 run in Lamar and hopes to do the same in the 3,200 run. Weidrich also is happy with freshmen Jordan Isom and Aubrey Nidey. Isom will compete in the long jump and the sprints, while Nidey will run the 400 dash and 800 run.

Having only nine members out for track hasnt discouraged Wiley track head coach Dean Thompson at all! What we lack in numbers, we more than make up for in our kids willingness to work and have a good work ethic, said Thompson. With six girls out, including four that went to state a year ago, Thompson will have some good leadership on his squad. Thompson will sorely miss his top returning male athlete from a year ago in junior Matthew Aguilera. Aguilera placed in both hurdles events at state a year ago, including a fifth place finish in the 300 hurdles. He had knee surgery this winter after hurting the knee at the beginning of basketball season. The Wiley girls had all three of their sprint relays place at state a year ago, including a third place finish in the 800 medley relay. They were disqualified in that event at the recent Lamar Invitational, but plan to run it again as the season progresses.

WILEY TRACK SCHEDULE

The 400 relay team of Bailey Dodson, Teri Johnsen, Maggie Schneider, and Kim States took fourth at Lamar. We have high hopes for our relays. We think we could do well in all three of those again, said Thompson. States, a state placer last year in the 100 and 200, will run the sprints as well, while Johnsen could run the open 200 and 400.

Jordan Sniff will run the hurdles, some relays, and the triple jump. A sophomore, Kirsten Garner, will compete in some of the longer distances for the Lady Panthers. Maggie Schneider, 10th at state a year ago in the triple jump, finished second at the recent Lamar Invitational with a 32-foot effort. She could run the open 400 as well. Dodson, just a sophomore, finished third in the 100 hurdles at Lamar, running a 17.78. We were pretty excited about that, stated Thompson. Three strong, the Panthers boys team will be led by their outstanding athlete Kody Wallace. Wallace, a junior, will compete in the high jump, the shorter sprints, and the 400, where he took fifth at the Lamar meet. Other boys running for Wiley will be a pair of distance runners in juniors Eric Marquez and Keno Durado. I have good kids who are willing to work hard, Thompson added. We are going to have some fun this year, work hard, and do the best we can.

The Eads High School track program is off to a great start this season. The girls team, with 10 members, finished fifth at the recent Lamar Invitational, and the two-man boys team scored 31 points to finish seventh in the 24-team field. Eads, though they could compete in Class 1A, has chosen to compete at the Class 2A level for the past two years. Eads head coach Stephanie Bohlander will again be assisted by Trey Eder and the upbeat Bohlander was excited about her teams performance at Lamar. We just have a group of terrific athletes that have begun the track season well, said Bohlander. The Eads girls had three first place finishes at Lamar, including Nicole Smith in the discus, Dena Hallman in the 800 run, and the 3,200 relay team of Hallman, sister Bekah Hallman, Marissa Dixon, and Emilee Weirich. Dixon took a sixth for Eads in the 1,600 at Lamar, while Weirich was eighth. Nash and Smith were third and fourth in the shot put. The 1,600 relay team of the

two Hallman sisters, Weirich, and freshman Dorian Ray took third in that event. Bekah Hallman was eighth in the high jump, as Eads placed in a variety of events. Other girls for Eads include freshman Eboni Nash, who throws the shot and discus, and Hailey Ray, another thrower. We have to have throwoffs each week to determine who is going to compete for us. Our third and fourth throwers would be tops on a lot of other teams, explained Bohlander. But that is a great problem to have. We have the best throwing coach around in Trey (Eder), and I am very lucky to have him. Nicole has placed all three years at state in the shot and discus, and she knows this is her final shot. The Eads boys team fea-

tures Daniel Weirich, the defending Class 2A state champion in both the shot and discus. Weirich, a junior, won the shot put by 10 feet and the discus by 18 feet in thoroughly dominating the competition in the Lamar Inivtational. Daniel has traveled to four or five indoor meets this winter, Bohlander said. It is his passion. The kid just lives in the weight room. He is just unbelieveable! A newcomer is Adam Simmerman who moved to Eads at the end of the basketball season. He finished second in the 800 run at Lamar and was sixth in the 1,600 run. It was the first mile that he has ever run, said Bohlander. This young man is just a really good athlete. He moved Marty Miller Courtesy photo from Castle Rock and is just a sophomore. A top program in Class 1A state baseball since it began, Eads will field a quality baseball team again this spring. Eads captured the first two initial state championships in baseball in 2007 and 2008. The Eagles struggled last year but look to get back to the playoffs this season. Without a senior on the team, Eads, still young, will be solid for the next several years. Veteran coach Billy Koehler returns eight starters from a year ago, so he will have a solid nucleus to build from. More importantly, he returns all his pitching staff as well. All-state honorable-mention left hander Cory Miller will return as the top arm, but he will have ample support from right handers Kyle Crow, Blaine Winder, and Justin Lenox. Freshman Tyler Rouse could be in the mix as well. Lenox will provide a big target behind the plate for the Marty Miller Courtesy photo Eagles, as the 6-2, 235-pounder returns as the Junior southpaw Cory Miller returns as one of the top pitchers for the Eads baseball team this season. starting catcher.

Walsh boys look for repeat

SPRINGFIELD BASEBALL

Longhorns have new look

SPRINGFIELD BASEBALL SCHEDULE

By Dick Peecher The Lamar Ledger

Defending state champions has a nice ring to it, doesnt it? The Walsh boys won the first ever Class 1A state championship in track last year, and coach Tom Meardon feels like his boys team has the numbers to make a great showing again this season. The Eagles graduated two standouts in Landry Cogburn and Laken Alley, who won five state gold medals between them. Cogburn won the 200 meter dash and swept the 110 and 300 hurdles, while Alley won the 100 meter dash. Both ran legs on the state winning 1,600 meter relay. Despite the loss of Cogburn and Alley, Meardon feels like his team will have some outstanding depth in their chase for a second state championship. Our relays will be even more important this year since we dont have as much individual talent as we did a year ago, he said. We will be relying even more on our depth than we did a year ago. Walsh returns a number of state placers from a year ago. Weston Meardon was ninth in the triple jump and placed third in the 1,600 run and was fourth in the 3,200 run. His brother Jaxon placed fourth in the high jump and was seventh in the 1,600 run and 10th in the 3,200 run. Jonathan England took fourth in the 400 meter dash and was sixth in the 100 meter dash. Ethan Sharpe placed seventh for the Eagles in the discus, and Chase Mundell finished 12th in the 800 run. Terrell Stafford also placed seventh in both the long jump and triple jump in last years state meet.Walsh also placed in all four relays a year ago. The Eagles return England and Stafford from last years winning 1,600 relay. England and Mundell return as members of the 800 relay that placed second at state. The 3,200 relay team that

It will be a whole new look for the Springfield baseball team this year. With 16 players out and new coach, Greg Cash on board, the Longhorns hope to play tough in the Class 1A District 3 field. Cash only has four boys who have played high school baseball before. Those include senior Brady Humphrey, a starter a year ago. Jordan Cash also started a year ago for the Longhorns at third base but will move to catcher this year. Brett Shettron and Levi Leaf were on the team a year ago and will provide

place fourth returns intact and will include Cristian Alvarez, Mundell, and the Meardon brothers. The Walsh coach is also excited about having Chaz Hebberd out this year, throwing the shot and discus, Tyler Sharpe in the sprints, and three or four freshmen who could help down the road. I think if everyone does what they are supposed to do and some of our younger kids come along and develop we will have a real shot at defending that championship, Meardon said. We have 15 boys out with 10 of them playing baseball too, so we have a lot of dedication during the spring sports. We have an awful lot of work ahead of us, but I am excited about it. The Walsh girls will be led by sophomore Heidi Cogburn, who finished second in the state in the long jump, sixth in the 300 hurdles, ninth in the 100 hurdles, and was ninth in the 400 meter dash. In the long jump, Cogburn was beaten for a state championship by one inch. Senior Larissa Conger of Merino won the event with a leap of 15-8 while Cogburn went 15-7. Meardon is also excited about Andy Wray and a couple of good freshman girls out for track this year.

One of the only schools with dual head coaches in track is Springfield, and with 24 boys out this spring it is easy to see why. State runner-up a year ago to Baca County rival Walsh, the Longhorns want to take that final step this season. I was really happy with 24 out this year. Some of the boys decided to concentrate on track this season rather than play both sports (baseball and track), but that was their choice, said venerable head coach Rick Hartley. The Longhorns return five individuals who placed at the firstever Class 1A state meet a year ago, as well as four dominating relay teams. Springfield won three of the four relays at state a year ago, and was second in the fourth. They were in the top three in all four in the Lamar meet, including a win in the 1,600 relay. That group included senior Justin Westphal, junior Chase Kinard, sophomore Johnny Reed, and freshman Justin Self. The Longhorns were without one of their leading runners from a year ago in Bric Koehn. Koehn is recovering from knee surgery he suffered in basketball and is rehabbing now on an elliptical machine. Hartley is hopeful he will be back in a couple of weeks. Other athletes contributing

will be senior Dillon Rose, who finished second in the 100 dash at Lamar. Westphal was fourth in the 400 dash, while newcomer Dallas Reynolds will give the Longhorns a threat in the weights, something they have never had before. Hartley is also excited about the nine freshmen he has out. Three of them are already helping with relays and some of the sprints. The girls team this year will be coached by Mike Jaco. They have 15 out with 11 freshmen in the mix and no seniors. Leading the way for Springfield will be junior Kiri Ricker. The talented Ricker was third in the in the triple jump at state a year ago. She also ran on some of the relays that placed at state. The Lady Longhorns finished seventh in the Lamar Invitational. Jaco will have a couple of good hurdlers in Bre Stafford, third at Lamar in the 100 hurdles, and freshman Kallysa McGeary, sixth in the 300 hurdles. Junior Kaylean Orlowski will be a thrower and could score for them. Jaco is really pumped about his freshmen class. Along with McGeary, Madison Burdick, Brianna Hendicks, and Whitney Westphal will all be consistent point winners. Springfield placed in all five relays at Lamar, including a third place finish in the 800 medley.
