[Geo-Won Seo / Director of Korea Archery Association ] Greetings.

I feel very honored to speak in front of one of nations best universities, Hanyang University. I would like to thank all of you for coming out here. When you hear the word Archery, what is the first thing that comes into your mind? Everyone who I know tell me archery means Olympics sports that Korean can win a lot of gold medals in. I hear people say that if we win 3 gold medals out of 4, we come even. If we only win 2, people get very disappointed in us. How did you become so good in archery? Today, we will be talking about those things. As a sport that is enlisted in Olympics, the history of archery in Korea is very short. As you would all know, Korea was very poor during 1965 and early 70s. That was when modern European archery technology enters into our nation. During that time, a big event, that all of you female students can be proud, of happens. Do you remember Seo Hyang Sook, who won the first female gold medal in Korea during 84 LA Olympics? That was when we realized that Korea can also have a female athlete who can win a gold medal just like those rich countries. Since 84 LA Olympics, our female archery became the best in the world. 4 years later in 88 Seoul Olympics, the Korean male archery becomes the best in the world as well. For 20 years, Korean archery had to challenge and fail. We were a small poor country in Asia that was despised by other rich countries. It was a very difficult time. However, we have overcome those difficulties and now, International Archery Federation also known as FITA, are changing rules and toying with equipments to hold our backs. A lot of difficult things happened because of it. It was especially difficult during late 80s to mid 90s when Korea swept almost all of the gold medals in archery. Do you remember the 96 Atlanta Olympics? A year before the Atlanta Olympics, Men were using US products and women were using Japanese products. At that time, 70% of bow products were from US and 30% were from Japan. As you saw in the movie, clip, USA was eager to take back the title of world champions in archery. When Korea was first introduced with archery, US and Russia were the world best in archery for 30 years. However, those countries are not nearly as good as us now. That is why USA tried their best to regain their title during the Atlanta Olympics. During that time, a new bow product came out that was supposedly very good. We were very surprised and thought if we were to use this product, we could get really good scores. During that time, the company that sold US products was located in Taiwan. However, they told us that they cannot sell their products to everyone. Since they were an exclusive seller in the market, they told us they will be selecting their customers by themselves. Players who want to purchase that new product had to turn in their profile. Then, their headquarters had to OK the player in order for them to sell the product. In other words, Korean players were not allowed to buy that new product.

In order for us to purchase that product, we visited the headquarters in USA. We asked them to sell just 4 bows and we will pay the amount that they want. However, that company said that they did not have 4 bows to spare. We were there for three days but failed to purchase those bows. We told our players that we cannot buy that bow for you. In order for us to win gold medals, we will have to increase our training time by 20 minutes to compensate with our disadvantages. As you can imagine, we went through hell in training. A year later, the 96 Atlanta Olympics began. As you remember, our female team even managed to break the camera glass in the middle of the bulls eye target and won a perfect gold. That was when Kim Kyoung Wook broke that camera lens and won a gold medal. So, 2 gold medals were won by the female team. Then, the male team was faced with the USA team in the finals. During the game, players who shoots first enters the stadium first. Therefore, our players went into the stadium after the USA team. When they saw USA players with their high tech bows, our players lost confidence. They thought, Those players are tall, strong and equipped with the very best tools. How can we beat them? However, we were very close in the finals. However, our team lost to USA team by a point. We were mortified at the time. We all thought that if we were equipped with right tools, we could have won. However, during the individual games, our player lost to a USA player again in the semi-finals and won a bronze medal as of result. Before a month before the Olympics and maybe about 5 months after the Olympics, no one really cares who the archery players are doing in Korea. When we came back from Atlanta Olympics, all of the news lines read, Korean Archery, a red light. Let me tell you now that archery has nothing to do with driving. When we mess up a little, they all say we hit a red light in their front pages. When I read the papers, they all said that the Korean archery was going down. They all said that Korean coaches were blind in their information and coaches let the Korean players to compete in old bows. They all criticized the coaches for letting that happen and for being so blind in information. They went on and said that our training methods were bad and our player selection process was messed up. They went on with their fictions for a week. During that time, coaches were not allowed to say anything to anyone because the nation thought that we were some kind of a criminal. I was already in despair because of those bows. However, when the press pointed out those problems, I realized that Korean archery did not have any future without overcoming those obstacles. As of results, I started a seminar with Korean Archery Association members and everyone who is related to archery. As of result, we concluded that all of the Korean players were banned from using foreign bows in elementary and middle school archery competitions. When we first made that decision, people were really mad. They told us that if the players were not allowed to use foreign bows, the players will not be able to get high scores. Not only that, but they also said that there were no Korean companies that made bows.

It was a big chaos. At that time, there were no Korean bow manufacturing companies. If people were not allowed to use foreign bows in competitions, there were really no bows to play with in Korea. Therefore, we started the research and found out that there were three toy bow making companies in Korea. Now, you probably think that I am joking with you for making people compete in competitions with toy bows. However, I was not joking at the time. I said that we should start trying and if there are problems, we can start by fixing them one by one. When we first started to use toy bows, it was a lot of fun. Do you remember shooting balloons with toy bows? Imagine professional players as well as elementary and middle school players competing with a toy bow. It has to be very fun and exciting. Do you know why? The first reason is because we really do not know what will happen next. Luck almost plays 70% in the competition. Do you remember lottery shootings where people were shooting at rotating boards to find out the winning number? This game was just like that and no one would anticipate any results. I told everyone I know that success is guaranteed if archery tools were to be made. I told them that archery players will support the company if they decide to make archery bows. Many people were scared to start this business because the international archery market was monopolized by USA and Japan. Even if we were to successfully make a bow with a lot of investment, we were to loose in the market if we cannot find a distribution route. However, two of the three toy bow making company decided to jump into the real archery bow making business. They said that if they were to make some adjustments to their toy bows, they would be able to sell their products more. Little by little, more investments came in. National team supported the manufacturing process by giving a lot of advices on the technologies and function. I visited that toy company a lot of times. It was almost like I was living in it. I took those tools and researched them at KAIST and Dadeuk Research District. It was not an easy thing to do. It took a lot of efforts. However, the most difficult thing came from some of the members in the Korean archery society. They said that we were corrupted and working with bow making companies to make a fortune. If they were to be researched by the police, everyone will go to jail. Korean bows cannot be as good as foreign bows at all. These kind of things were the most difficult things to beark. It was not a difficult thing to do. There were a lot of resistances as well. When Korean bows were to break, they would say, look, that is why we dont use Korean bows. When a foreign bow broke, they would say, how come this expensive bow broke? I must be very unlucky. People were totally caught up with an idea that Korean products were bad and foreign products were good. It was very difficult to overcome. However, as people would say, risk was a chance of opportunity. There was a lucky event for us. It was the IMF crisis in December 97 that put

everyone in despair. During March, April and May of 98, the Dollar currency started to increase dramatically. An elementary school students bow that used to cost 3.5 million Won went up in price by 11 million Wons a piece. Finally, people thought, that is why those people tried so hard to make a Korean brand bow. They did have some thoughts in it. That is when people finally agreed with what we were doing. That is why in 97, during IMF crisis, we started to manufacture some great products. Four years later, in 2000 Sydney Olympics, all of the Korean team used Korean bows to win 3 gold medals out of 4. The world was in awe. They looked at our bows and were surprised to find out that they were made in Korea. They were surprised at us for coming up with our own bow. Four year later, again in 2004 Greece Athens Olympics, the Korean team wins 3 out of 4 gold medals with Korean bows. After winning 6 out of 8 gold medals within 8 years, people started to acknowledge that Korean bows are the best. That was really great. The bows were selling like crazy. Three years later, in July 2007, the International Archery Competition was held in Leipzig, Germany. What comes into your mind when you hear the word, Leipzig? Yes, it was the place where Korea played Germany in 2006 World Cup. Total of 98 countries were in this competition. About a thousand players each for male and female competitions played for 4 days in the preliminary rounds. After figuring out the top 128, we move up the ladder to top 64, 32, 16, 8, 4, and the finals. As you would all know, Korean players would not get any military duty alleviations even if they win a gold medal in this competition. Soccer starts from top 32 in the World Cups. However, soccer players are awarded with military duty alleviations when they make it only to top 16. Then, why do not archery players get military duty alleviations when they win a gold medal in world competitions? That is because archery is a sport where we always win a gold medal in the Olympics. We have to go through this kind of obstacles all the time. If an archery player makes it to top 16 in this competition, the world recognizes that player as one of the best in the world. After deciding the top 16 in both male and female competition, they all entered the stadium. I was really surprised and honored. All of those 32 players were using Korean brand bows. It was very touching. The more surprising thing was that all of their coaches were also Korean. Now, when we enter the stadium to compete in the top 16, it feels like I am at home. I used to shout out loud our strategies before. However, Korean is a common language now in the archery stadium. Even if I am busy, I now bring my player closer to whisper our strategies. Korean archery developed into the very best. During the Beijing Olympics, did you see the bows in hands of foreign players? If ten of them are there, at least 8 or 9 players were holding onto a bow that read, Samik. Have you heard of Samik? It is a Korean brand.

Do you know where Samik bows came from? Samik was a musical instrument company that made pianos. Samik bows, Samik case. They used black rose woods on top of the plywoods make a beautiful piano case The patterns of black rose woods are beautiful. After making a piano case, there are some left over woods. Samik would use those woods to make a toy bow. It is beautiful and everyone would want to have it. Since Europeans are very fond of bows, Samik would give those toy bows away for free when they meet foreign piano buyers. Now, it shares 45% of the international bow market and 98% of world-class players bow. It took them only 10 years to do so. They managed to succeed when everyone else said that they cant do it. We were able to construct a stable infrastructure where no one else could toy with us before an important competition by not letting us have the tools we need. Now, I feel that if someone would spend 10 years in doing something with an extreme amount of passion, everyone can succeed. You can look at these bows if need an example. That is what I am trying to say. Now, I want to talk about archery player selection for the national team. An year before the 2008 Beijing Olympics, 1 to 100th place in Korean male ranking as well as in female ranking players were allowed to participate in the national team competition. Not everyone gets to compete in it. There is a lot of competition. Do you remember the October 10th National Sports Competition held in Jeonam Yeosu, Sunchun, Mokpo and Ilwon right after the Olympics? In that competition, we awarded the players with medal system that was in place before. As you all know, when Korea was not so good in archery, there were six medals each for males and females. Males had gold, silver and bronze for 90, 70, 50 and 30 meters in individual and team competitions. Female had 70, 60, 50 and 30 meters in individual and team competitions. So, 6 medals were awarded to female and 6 were award to male that summed up in total of 12 medals. In 79, Kim Jin Ho, who is now a professor in Korea National Sports University, won 5 titles in the International Competition in Berlin. There were 12 medals back then. When Korea started to win a lot of medals, the number of medals started to decrease. Now, there are 2 medals for women and 2 for men. Total of 4. It has changed. However, all of the other international games are abiding to the previous system. 6 gold, 6 silver and 6 bronze. Total of 18 medals for a competition. During this National Sports Competition, all of the three players who went to the Beijing Olympics did not even win a bronze medal. All of them were lost in top 32 and 16 competitions. The media was surprised. They were surprised to know that Olympic players did not even win any medals. They were really shocked and said that Jang Mi Ran of weight lifting managed to win three

titles in the National Sports Competition. Then, what would this mean? Even if a player makes it to the national team, they cannot even make it into top 100 if they dont train themselves for two weeks. That is how competitive Korean archery is. If a player is in top 80 in the Korean archery rank, they are almost top 5 in the world. If they make it to the national team, they can be top 5 players in the world. However, since they didnt make it to the national team, they only get to have the Korean ranking. They are in 80th place. In order for Korea to become a stronger sports country, I tried my best to increase the numbers of medals in the archery competition. Take a look at swimming where Europe and USA are really strong in. Phelps won 8 medals in the last Olympics. Take a look at swimming. They just change the competition distances and practically give out medals for each of them. They swim backwards, forwards and sideways to win a lot of medals. Maybe, archery should compete in sitting position, standing position, laying down position and sideways Thank you. I will try my best to make this happen. Those 100 players get to go through 10 competitions within 10 months to pick out 3 men and 3 women players. The system is constructed so that players who cannot manage themselves properly will not make it to the national team. Also, the evaluation system is constructed so it does not pick out the best shooter. Players, leaders and all of you should all know that it is very important to have a fair selection process based on fair principles. It is very important. We have total of 10 competitions. During the 1st competition, we only allow players with strong stamina to pass it to the next round. It is because players without good stamina work out will never achieve good scores. The second competition looks for mental strength. Since a lot of people are so rich nowadays, there are some kids who were raised in a pampering environment. As of result, some of them have really weak minds. If they are a bit tired, they say, I cant do it. They cannot be patient to achieve their goals. The system is constructed to weed out those players from making it to the national team. It is a really difficult competition where weak minded players will have to quit during the process. The third competition looks for a good sense and fourth competition looks for a strong spontaneous concentration. The fifth competition looks for players with strong competitiveness. Players who do not give up until the end will score higher in this competition. The sixth competition looks for players who can adapt to the environment quickly. The 7th, the important thing here is that 100 players start in the first round. After the first round, 64 go onto the next round and 65 players go back home. Then, do those 64 players move onto the next round with a score from the previous round? No. All of the starts from zero in the next round. After the 2nd round, there are 32 players. Then, they move onto the next round in zero. Then, next 16 go home. As this process weeds out players, players do not move onto the next round with a score from the

previous round. They all start from zero. Therefore, even if a player wins 1st, 2nd or 3rd places in the previous rounds, one mistake can make them go home in the next round. If their scores were to be accumulated, players who one 1st, 2nd and 3rd places for five or six times will be guaranteed to join the national team even if they become bad at the end. In order for the players to maintain their concentration, we always start the next round in zero-basis. When we reach the 7th competition, 8 men and 8 women are left from 100 players. Then, these 8 players start from zero again. It does not matter how good you were in 1st to 6th competitions. However, when there are 8 players left, you cannot really say who is better than whom. It is more like who makes the first mistake. Each shot holds that players future. Each shot. As of result, players put their hearts in each shot that they make. They really go through a tremendous amount of stress from this point. Then, if they are able to overcome this kind of stress, 4 men and 4 women players are left. Then, what would happen in the 8th, 9th, and 10th competition? We all know that they are the very best in Korea. However, we do not know how they will do in the international competition. In order for us to evaluate that, we make them participate in the international competitions for the 8th, 9th and 10th competitions. After having 3 international competitions, we pick out three players and let one player go home. So there are 3 men and 3 women players. The most difficult decision for us leaders had to do with the 6th competition where we look for players who can adapt to the environment quickly. Players with good adaptation skills. How do we find these kinds of players? We always have the 6th competition in June. During June, we send a letter to the weather forecasting station. We ask them to pick out a date when there will be a strong storm during June. Then, they send us a detailed report. It contains what kind of storm there will be, how much rain, wind, wind directions and so on. Then, we choose a date where there will be the worst storm of the year as a competition date. Even though forecasting may be wrong, they always manage to get the margins right. Last year, I remember that there was a really strong storm on the third day of the competition. When I turned on the TV, the stadium was like as if it was bombed. They had to pin everything down in order for various equipments to simply stay on the ground. The competition began at 8:30 in the morning. There was a strong storm where players could not even stand in. 70 meters. It may seem very close to you. The target is 70 meters away from the players. Yellow is 10 points and has 12 centimeters of diameter. If 12 centimeters is 70 meters away, you cannot see it. You just have to rely on your senses to shoot at it. Nobody could even stand on a line but they all had to aim at a target. It was almost impossible.

You saw those women who played in that short. 30 seconds are given to take one shot. Then, there is a waiting line 2 meters away from the shooting line. After the buzzer, the time starts. 29, 28, 27. It drops down really fast. It takes about 12-13 seconds for the players to quickly move from the waiting line and shoot an arrow. That means that they have to take a shot within 17-18 seconds. However, if they cant even stand the wind, it is almost impossible to aim at a target that is 70 meters away. How could they do it? In their minds, the all go through should I shoot it now, or should I wait 2 more seconds? It is unimaginable how they would feel. Should I take a shot or wait? It is really amazing what they have to go through out there. As you all know, there was one famous player who did not get to participate in the Beijing Olympics. She won 2 gold medals in the Olympics and 2 in the International Competition. She had 9 seconds left and at that time, she felt the settling down of the winds. As soon as she decides to let go of her hands and take a shot, bam, there was a thunder and she slipped her fingers. She didnt even get the target and got zero points. She did not make it to the national team because of that one shot. She started crying really hard. Her first goal was to become a part of the national team and the 2nd goal was to win gold medals in the Olympics. In order for her to achieve her first goal, she had to go through a lot of obstacles for the past 4 years. She was always at the top from the 1st competition but did not make it to the national team because of a slipped shot. She really cried that day. However, who was hurt the most? I would have to say the leader. We all thought that she should have made it to the team. We started to think how our national team might be without her as an addition. However, we all knew other peoples failures are our lessons. USA and Russia that was at the top of the world in archery for 30 years had a reason why they declined to the second and third places. Like in some of our sports society, too much energy was spent in taking sides and factions. There were where problems were. If the player selection process is not clean and compromised, that becomes the reason why that team deserves to go in 2nd and 3rd places. However, we do not give any advantages to the star players. Star players or not, they all have to go through our competition process to make it to the national team. We really thought about giving her an advantage. Like in soccer, there is an association that supports the national team. We sat down and discussed, what should we do? She has to be on the team. Some said that we should give her another shot because she was disturbed by force majure. If she gets another shot, it was definite that she would make it to the national team. However, if we did that there was no point in having these competitions. Instead, we would step aside the star players and choose 3 players from this competition round.

Then, we would let one player go home because they do not have any international competition experiences and not proven at the international games. A lot of sports decide to choose this method to select their players. Then, some players would make it through the competition but end up going home just because they do not have international game experiences. It would make them really mad, right? When those players gather up, they form a faction. Archery, our team was a bit weaker in the Beijing Olympics but in a long shot, it was better for us to keep our principles. We had let our star player go. Then, what do we have left? Young players without international experiences are guaranteed a spot in the national team as long as they train themselves to be the best player in Korea. It is a strong motivation that gives hopes and dreams to the players. That is how we create an environment where players can only think about their game and nothing else. This is the reason why we have so many star players in archery. Korean archery is grown upon the hopes for a better future. This little principle was the basis for the success that Korean archery had for past 25 years. I am pointing out this to you because it is really important. Principle results in the best result. I would like to emphasize this point. So, three men and three women players. I am certain that no one in Hanyang does it but when there are people, there are some people who just have a twisted mind. That is likewise in sports as well. Those people are always negative and have something to say for almost everything. Maybe, they might be born with it. Whenever they get a chance, they talk about the coaches, their work, their team leader and professors If they dont like it so much, it would be the best for all of us for that person to quit. However, these people are like wet leaves. Do you know wet leaves? When they are dry during the fall, it is great. However, when it is wet, it looks really dirty on the ground. We sweep the floor the clean the road up but they are really sticky and do not come off the ground. Those people are just like that. If we try to let them go, they stick to the group and do not let go. If we turn our backs to them, they come up with bad plans. If we set those leaves on fire, they do not even burn down because they are wet. Wet leaves, twisted minds. Every group has those kinds of people. There are people who seem nice but not as good under a tiny bit of pressure. Whenever there is a trouble, they would say, why should I deal with it? and turn their backs. If we picked out three players and one of them is like that, we would have a serious problem then. What should we do? We cannot let them go because they made it fair and square. That is where our leadership comes along. For 2 to 3 months, we have a lot of conversations to get to know each other well. Based on those conversations, people build their trusts and faith. Coaches and players can build those based on a lot of conversations. Also, when we have a conversation, it is really important to talk with truthful words.

Dont keep secrets and throw curve balls at people during the conversations. That is how we become honest with each other. In Korea, we have profiles for the Korean players as well as 300 top class foreign players. Based on a lot of conversation, we get to know that persons main qualities. We know what their fathers are like, mothers are like, their favorite and least favorite food, what makes them relaxed and what calms them down. We have them on a checklist and go back to it all the time. Then, we can use that information to learn about what to say when to relax that player in certain situations. An hour before, 30 minutes, 10 minutes and 5 minutes before the competition, we have different things to say to different players to calm them down. Those conversations are where individualized training programs are made from. If a player has 100% capacities, I would let them fail if I give them 140% amount of training. On the other hand, that player might feel weaker if I only give them with 60% amount of training for the day. By letting the players have the best amount of training, we let them put out the best results that they can. In order to do that, we need to have a lot of conversations. As a leader of a group, you should know what others want by just looking at their eyes. We should have a lot of conversations in order to figure out the minds just through the eyes. That is the basics. One word can bring people up and make them motivated. We really need these kind of team players who can motivate others really easily. And all of this comes from a lot of conversation. So, when we wait 2-3 months to get to know all of our players, those players are now in your heart. From then on, we look at everything that might have 1/1000 chances of happening in the real competition. We have a strict individualized training. Now, let me talk briefly about the training process. As you saw in the movie clip, we prepare ourselves for the crowd noise and boos. We go to the Jamsil Baseball Stadium to practice in front of thousands of people. We also practice in cycling stadium to practice under the crowd noise. We also go to horse racing stadium to practice under the crowd noise. Before the Olympics, we created an environment just like the Beijing stadium and did adaptation training in front of the cameras. These are the trainings that we have. In order to develop courage, the players go through UDT at the Silmi Island marine camp. Like special agents, they train themselves by jumping off towers. There is a famous training program called HID. In that training, you train with snakes. You let a snake go into your cloths and let it out through your left leg and right leg. You have one around your neck and even into your mouth sometimes. The most important thing about these training processes had to do with leaders taking charges. We all know that leaders should become the role model. However, it is not that easy in real lives. That is why in all of our training processes, the leaders step up to the plate demonstrate the training process before anyone else.

We do not use our fingers to give out orders. If we were to use our fingers to give orders, we might have that finger get cut off. If we used other fingers instead of that, we might even get our hands cut off. That is how the mood is in our training camp. In order to become decisive, we all go through 11 meters high diving, the height that humans are most afraid of. We do high diving in Onyang Swimming Pool. 11 meters is 5 stories high. Players have to jump off a 5 stories high building and into the water. It is not as easy as it sounds. Some female players go through hours of tears. What do we do, then? The leaders stand next to those players until the end. If they cannot do it, the leader would jump off the diving board again to create a supporting mood. When the players get used to this heigt, we go to Yuldong Park in Bundang. There is a 45 meters high bungee jump at that park. When the players get used to that height again, we go to Chunju lake where 65 meters high bungee jump is located at. That is how we train our players. Let me tell you an incident that happened at Chungju Lake. We took our players and the coaches gave the demonstration first. Each person had to jump for three times. The cost was 40,000 won for a jump. All of the players were able to jump but one female player. What would happen? We had to go back to our camp when it was 5o clock in the afternoon. We discuss, should we let her jump the next day? and I would say, of course. Bring them here the next day. So, we grab that player and went to the lake the next day. We start to convince the player to jump after going up to the jumping deck. We start explaining why she has to go through this process for 30 minutes. We tell her that if she does not overcome this kind of extreme pressure, she would not be able to overcome the same amount of extreme pressure that she has to face at her last shot in the Olympics. We convince her for 30 minutes. If everyone can do it, so can her. We tell her that she is more diligent and patient than others. After a lot of motivation, she starts to get energized. She tells me that she could do it now. Then, I would agree with her and say, I know you have it in you. Do it now. OK. High five! However, as soon as she goes on the deck, she tells me that she tells me that she cant do it. It drives me mad. I feel like kicking her down the board. If this was an army, we would kick her off the board. That would make everything easy. Instead, we sit down again to convince her once more. Then, the coach jumps off again to let her know that we are behind her. Then, 30 minutes of convincing again. After that, the player thinks about whether she would jump or not. However, she ends up saying that she cannot do it again. It really drives us crazy and feels like hitting her.

However, we sit down again to convince her once more. Then, the coach has to jump off again. Afterwards, 30 minutes of convincing again. If she is not convinced yet, the coach jumps off again. Last time, one coach had to bungee jump for 9 times. It costs 40,000 Wons for a jump. The manager felt sorry for us and did not charge 4 of the 9 jumps that day. He gave a discount. This player starts crying now. I am so sorry. I am sorry that you have to go through this because of me. Then, I would say, if you are really sorry, go out there and jump. If you are not jumping, you are not really sorry. Give me a break here. What am I doing here? Just take a try. Then I jump again. At last, the player starts crying like a baby. They say, I am so sorry. I am sorry that you are jumping because of me. If you are sorry, you should jump, too. It goes on and on. When that player says, I would rather die, it will take a lot of time for that player to actually jump off the deck. It takes a lot of time. When that player finally jumps off the deck, she must have felt like she is killing herself by jumping off of a 15 stories building. Afterwards, I would tell her, that is how you do it. You dont have to enjoy what you are doing. You do it as if you are dying. In the Olympics, it will feel this way a step by step. That is how you jump. Do it one more time now. Then, that player jumped off the deck once again. Three months later, she wins the gold medal in the Spain Madrid International Competition with the best scores. Now, she tells me that thank you so much. I used to be afraid of heights but now, I think I overcome that fear. If you gave up on me and decided to move onto the next training, I would have stopped becoming a better player. Thank you for your patients with me until the end. Patient leadership and role model leadership that made you jump off that deck for so many times. If I didnt have that, I wouldnt have become the player that I am today. She was really thankful. She is still a great player. There is a famous program called Masters in their Lives in SBS channel. 7 months ago, a 40 to 50 years old lady came on the show and showed off her envelop folding skills. She was able to fold 5-6 times more envelop than other people. Company owners said that she is a big asset to our company. Without her, our company would not run properly. She is really great. When the producer asked her to comment on her work, it really shocked me to hear that from her. She said, I know this is a 3D work. No one wants to do it but I have been doing it for past 20 years. I educated my children and even bought a small all house for our family. I am really happy." I cannot imagine myself without this job. This is a natural job for me. I am really happy. I learned a lot from what she had to offer. That was exactly the mood that I wanted

to achieve in the archery field. Instead of her being, I am out of luck for having that bum as my husband. I had to work really hard for 20 years without cherishing the fortune that anyone else could. If she lived in her despair, she could not have become the master at her work. This kind of environment has to be created by the people and obstacles have to be overcome by the people as well. That is what I have to emphasize today. Players as well as the leaders have to really work hard to achieve a common goal. I will give you another example that shows that we need an intensive planning in order to achieve a goal. All of our players start their training 5:30 in the morning. At 8 in the night, they eat their dinner and come back to the dormitories. Then, 2 hours of free time is given and they all have to go to bed at 10. However, female players have to get up 40 to 50 minutes early than 5:30 in order for them to get ready. They are always lacking sleep. These players think they will die at some point of the day while they are training. That is how intensive the trainings are. One winter day, at 5:30 in the morning, the temperature was minus 18-19 degrees in Celsius. It is about 4-5 degrees colder than the metropolitan areas of Seoul because Taeleung Camp is located within the deep mountains. Then, we say, this is the coldest day. It is really cold out there. Today is the d-day. So, that day, we have the most intensive training. Circuit training, weight training, interval training and cross country. A lot of training for such a cold day. When we go back to the dorm at 8, players are so tired that they cannot even move a finger. They go to sleep right away. However, that day, we gather up again at 12 in the night without any prior notice. We get them in the car and go to Chunho Bridge. It takes about 30 minutes to get there. Chunho Bridge. When we get to Chunho Bridge, it is 12:30 in the night. As the players get out of the car, they say, coaches seem to think that we are some special agents. We need to get our sleep at this time of the day. They all say, as long as a get a good night sleep, I should be fully recovered. That is when I say, this is about the time. When we go to the Chunho Bridge, I convince them for 20 minutes on why we have to go through this process. If we go below the bridge even during summer times, it is quite cold. However, think about standing below the Chunho Bridge for 20 minutes and receive a lecture. The players go crazy. They say, Coach, I know what you have to say. Lets begin the training. Then I would respond, You have to listen to what I have to say. There is a plan. Then, I go on for 2 more minutes. If I talk for 10 more minutes, they all go crazy and tell me that they understand what I have to say. At that point, players who did not want to train are very eager to start the training process. OK. You all understood why we are doing this, right? Yes Lets go. When the first person starts walking, the second person starts after the first person gets to the 1km mark. Then, the rest of the players start walking in 1km distances. However, there is a rule. They are not allowed to run at all. They are forced to face the cold winter wind of Han River. If people are really tired, they are better off by running to forget their pains.

That is why we dont allow the players to run. They usually power-walk through the training. In order to prevent them from running, I walk at the first in the line and coaches stay in between the players. Can you imagine the coldest wind of Han River? At 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 o clock? Can you imagine facing them at night without getting any sleep? No words can explain that pain. We walk all the way to the 63 Building. It its about 25 km away from the Chunho Bridge. If we start walking at 12 in the night, we arrive at the 63 Building around 7 in the morning. Our hands, nose and ears are totally frozen. It is really difficult. When we get there, we eat a nice warm soup. When the players are full, they probably want to get some sleep. However, I tell them, We should sleep in our dorms. Are you guys done? Yes Get on the car. The players are more than happy to get on the car with thoughts that they would go right to sleep when the go to their rooms. However, as we enter the road, they start to realize that something is wrong. We do not go back to the dorms but we go to the training camp. Coach, where are we going? You know, to training. That was not the plan. I was about to tell you are plan, but you said you knew all of my plans. You told me that I dont have to explain it to you. I had this plan all along but you guys stopped me from telling you the plans. We are starting the training now. The players had nothing to say to me at that pint. After the lunch, all of the players are almost out of their minds. It is really difficult. We have this kind of training all the time. Do you know why we do these trainings? It is to create a courage that can help the players to overcome themselves and extreme amounts of stress. They also train themselves to adjust to different time frames during international competitions. You all know how difficult the current economy is. It is really difficult. I looked at some of the major Korean companies when archery was first introduced to Korea in 1965. I looked at how many companies out of top 100 companies managed to survive after 40 years. There are only 12 companies standing now. Other 88 were bankrupt or dissolved in the process. We are living in an extreme competition society with a rapid turnover. We cannot survive without a clear goal and attempts to maximize our skills in the current times. How would you maximize your capacities? The most important thing is the passion in your heart. Without passion, we cannot achieve the great vision and dreams. What is your worst enemy? It is laziness, self-negligence and mannerism. We always say that winning others are small but winning yourself is the biggest win ever. We only have one day left of year 2008. What did you plan for the year 2008? What did you anticipate? Did you plans and anticipations come true? You would all know the answer to that question. If you dont have the passion to overcome yourself, you are not likely to survive in this competitive world. Even if you are from a great educational institution,

you are less than a corpse if you do not have the passion. You need to have the passion. Passion. We commonly think about the successes that we may have. We only think about the butterfly looking for its flowers in the spring. What comes into your minds when you see a butterfly? Relaxation, freedom and calmness. However, those butterflies could not have been so free if they did not go through the cocoon process. There are a lot of obstacles ahead of our lives. It is up to us to overcome those obstacles and succeed in our lives. The driving force for that is the passion. You cannot survive without a passion in your heart. Let me tell you one more thing. Now, world is within 1-day reach. You need to be able to have a global capacity that will allow you to succeed anywhere in the world. You need to maximize your capacities. That is up to you. Even though there may be a lot of qualities to become a global leader, I believe that the most important quality is in the language skills. Language. You need to know English fluently as the basics. Then, you need to learn 2nd and 3rd languages. If you cannot speak the language, you cannot be at your 100% regardless of how good you are. I would like to emphasize the importance of language. In order for use to become a successful leader, we need 6 qualities. First three qualities have to do with becoming a good team member and the other three have to do with becoming a good leader. Three main principles of becoming a good leader. The first has to do with personalities. The second has to do with professional skills. The third is the most important thing. You need to be able to respect the others and have concerns for the other people. These are the six qualities. We need two qualities to become successful. The first is mental capacities and the second is human network. These the qualities combined created a big synergistic effect to create the best result possible. What is human network? It refers to a good relationship with various people. I strongly encourage you to create good relationships with others starting now. Here is the reason why leadership qualities have to be maximized right now. 20% of the people in a group are leaders and the rest 80% are the followers. There are six qualities to becoming a great leader. They are ethics, faithfulness, diligence, humanity, skills, respect and devotion. People who make good relationship with others can succeed the fastest. That is what I am trying to say. 6 qualities. Then, what is the greatest risk that is required by our society? When an unprepared leader takes over the group, that group is determined to fail at some point. I strongly urge you to create good relationships with others to maximize your leadership skills. I tell our coaches five things. The first thing is to compete with yourself all the time. The second is to imagine the worst. The third is to look for changes and revolutions all the time. The third is to overcome risks and challenges. The fifth is to overcome the fear within yourself.

To overcome the fear within yourself. People with fear will tend to fear changes as well. They live in fear for new things, failures and challenges from others. These people will never improve. What happens to those who do not realizes the risks within their lives? They live today like yester and tomorrow like today. They just live along the flow. These peoples growth and development are totally stopped. They are going into failure one step by step even without realizing it themselves. December 2nd, 2008 is the first and the last day in our lives that we will never pass by again. Today will never come until the end of our lives. The time we have is so precious. We need to live our lives by thinking about what the meanings are in our lives and use them to our advantages. If a marathon player who runs 42.195 kilometers still feels like they can run after the competition, it means that player did not give their best. What use is to have strengths after the competition? You need to put out their best during the competition. As I told you in the beginning, if you put out your passion for at least 10 years, I am sure that you will become the best at what you do. You can all succeed. I am pretty sure that archery players know that the best. Do you know a book by David J. Schwartz called Dream big and Achieve big? Dreams will come true eventually. Set your second and third goals and start running again. Dreams will come true at some point. You have seen it in Korean archery. I emphasize it again. Dreams will come true. I wish you the very best until you achieve your dreams. Thank you very much.
