VETEK V2000 a breakthrough in corrosion monitoring technology

The V2000 monitoring system consists of a patented CMS electrode of silver wire which is inside a plastic braid. The braid prevents the wire from coming into contact with the steel anchor. When the anchors are being produced, the braided electrode is wrapped around the steel of the anchor, which is then placed into sheathing to complete the corrosion protected anchor. The top end of the electrode is extended past the top of the anchor in order to be electrically connected to the test box on-site. The pore water of the grout performs the function of an electrolyte between the anchor steel and the electrode. It is therefor possible to measure the electrical potential between the anchor and the electrode, thus knowing the condition of the steel with respect to corrosion. If corrosion is present, the corrosion electrochemical activity will register on the electrode as increased voltage and current. The following table gives the range of values generated for each condition. Once corrosion is detected, by also measuring the current, one can predict the rate of decay of the anchor steel. Range 1 - less than 300mV dc Range 2 - from 300mV to 400mV dc Range 3 - 400mV dc and above > The anchor is permanently protected, no corrosion activity. > The passivating layer of the steel is being damaged, corrosion has begun. > Corrosion is fully active on the anchor steel.

VETEK Systems Monitor All Elements of Bridges for Corrosion

The Vetek Corrosion Monitoring System can permanently monitor any steel member in your bridge and signal when corrosion starts (or stops), the severity of the corrosion, and locate it for you. It can even monitor the rate at which corrosion conditions penetrate your concrete structure before it reaches your structural steel elements. And, it can inform you of the moisture level and temperature within the concrete of your structure.

Monitoring Techniques in New Construction

For new bridges, the design engineers working with experienced field maintenance engineers, select the areas of the piers, deck, and structural cables to be monitored. V2000 monitoring cable is used to monitor rebar, solid steel elements, pretensioning and post tensioning cables. This will signal the start and cessation of corrosion and the intensity of the corrosion. The CPMP units, either standard or advanced, are used for corrosion penetration rate concern areas in decks, piers, and piers at seawater lines. TDR cable is used to assist in locating corrosion sites, when their existence is indicated by the output of the V2000 cable, on long stretches of cables such as pretensioning, post tensioning, and stay cables.

Monitoring Techniques in Existing Construction

For existing structures, some destruction is required in order to install the necessary monitoring cables. A good time for this is when repair work is needed due to existing corrosion damage for it tells you the troubled areas of the structure. For rebar, access within 1/2 inch of the steel is required. Then the monitoring cable is laid and the new covering concrete is applied. Subsequent monitoring of this area is now possible. Also install CPMP units at this time for corrosion penetration rate data so you can act before the structural steel is again affected. This too is the time to install cathodic protection, if deemed appropriate for the situation. The monitoring system can now inform you as to when to repair the surface coating or when to turn the cathodic protection system on or off and thus maximize that systems longevity. For pretensioning and post tensioning cables, if you can cut through the concrete and any covers to within 1/2 inch of the cables, then these can be monitored. If not, then these cannot be examined. The only exception would be to cut down to near the steel casing for a post tensioning cable and install a V2000 and TDR cable there. The monitoring cable would signal attack on the casing and the TDR cable would signal the location. That way, field maintenance could be done before the cable itself is attacked or damaged to any large extent. For stay cables, if plastic coated and steel over coated, then TDR techniques can be directly employed to determine if significant damage is occurring to the steel. If encased in HDPE, external wires can be added and TDR measurements made. When subsequent measurements are then made and compared, significant damage could be detected. Clearly, it is best to plan ahead for problems and maintenance by installing the necessary monitoring system during construction. That way, maintenance costs can be minimized.

VETEK CPMP Monitors for Corrosion Penetration Rate Permanently

With the VETEK CPMP Corrosion Penetration Rate Monitoring System you can monitor for the rate of penetration of corrosion conditions from the surface into a concrete structure anytime. The system uses the unique patented* measuring electrode system** to determine the actual electrochemical condition of precisely located steel elements embedded in the cement grout or concrete. The CPMP is able to detect the onset of corrosion at each depth as well as monitor for its subsequent progression or cessation and intensity without destructive examinations or external tests of any kind. From this time related data you can see the rate of progression of the corrosion conditions as they penetrate deeper into your structure and take corrective action before damage is done to the reinforcing system of your structure.

VETEK CPMP a breakthrough in corrosion penetration rate monitoring technology

The CPMP corrosion penetration rate monitoring system consists of 6 small sections of standard rebar located at 6 depths in 1cm increments from 1 to 7cm below the top surface of the unit. Each bar is monitored for the onset of corrosion using the patented V2000 CMS electrode. A connection cable up to 50 meters long for connection to an external standard data logger unit is included. Corrosion caused by chlorine containing moisture penetrating the concrete from the surface into your structure is monitored by monitoring these sacrificial bars. As the conditions for corrosion reach the critical level at the depth of the first bar, it signals corrosion your first warning! By knowing how deep the first bar is from the surface, you get your first indication of a rate of penetration. When the critical conditions reach the second bar level, you have another warning and your second rate of penetration determination, and so on. If these bars are at depths (typical) less than the first level of actual structural steel, you have an early warning of when to expect your structural steel will begin to be attacked. This affords you time to effect preventative maintenance to stop the intrusion before damage occurs. Once intrusion is stopped, so will the associated corrosion and the CPMP unit will signal that result. This is your confirmation that your maintenance work was successful. The CPMP unit is now available to monitor for the next occurrence of intrusion at that site!

With the VETEK Advanced CPMP Corrosion Penetration Rate Monitoring System you can monitor for the rate of penetration of corrosion conditions from the surface into a concrete structure anytime as with the standard unit (see previous page) as well as monitor the concrete for moisture levels (two depths) and the temperature. All data is recorded and transmitted to your computer via an internal data logger. Data can be transmitted up to 200 meters away from the CPMP location via fiber optic cables. A converter from fiber optics to standard digital computer electrical input is available.

Advanced CPMP: CPMP Applications:

Bridge Decks & Piers Parking Garage Decks Tunnel Wall Splash Zones Sea Walls and Piers

VETEK Advanced CPMP a marvel of miniature electronic technology!

The CPMP corrosion penetration rate monitoring portion of the system is the same as the standard CPMP described on previous page. Moisture levels within the concrete are monitored at two different levels. The measured readings are converted to percent moisture. Temperature within the concrete is also measured at the midpoint in depth of the unit. All data are periodically sampled (owners choice of sampling rate) and stored in an internal digital data logger. The data is transmitted to your computer on external command via fiber optic cables up to 200 meters in length. Control software for your computer is included. The unit is battery powered by an internal battery (five year no recharge life) or by an external power source via connecting wires. Optional converters for one or up to eight units from fiber optic cable signal to digital electric signals are available for the unit. These connect directly to any standard computer. Control software is included. All corrosion penetration rate monitoring functions are the same as on the standard model.
