Kohler Schools Superintendent Martin Lexmond was named as one of two finalists vying for a superintendent opening at the Shorewood, Wisconsin School District. The other candidate is Kirk Juffer, principal at Lake Bluff Elementary School. Lexmond, who has been with Kohler Schools for two years, said in a statement sent out to parents of Kohler Schools students that he applied for the position because it presents an opportunity for me to pursue my aspirations as an educational leader and to serve young people in ways that matter deeply to me. It is a unique opportunity, one which will not likely come along again within my career. Lexmond made it clear that he was very happy in Kohler Schools. The School Board is strong, cohesive, and supportive. I could not ask for a better working relationship or for a more committed group of individuals to make up the Board. The work we have pursued in the past two years put the district on a focused and sustainable path and all of us can be proud of these efforts, said Lexmond. During the past two years we closed a budget deficit, implemented a plan to provide for long-term building improvements, developed a forward-learning strategic plan, and focused on expanding a positive school culture which attracts students and high quality teachers alike. Kohler resident and brainchild behind Bucky Badger mascot passes

William Richard Sachse, age 85, of Kohler, died unexpectedly Sunday evening, May 20, 2012 after a brief illness. Bill was born April 27, 1927 in Sheboygan to Erwin George and Eleanora (Wiemann) Sachse. He was a graduate of Sheboygan North High School, Class of 1945. After serving in the US Navy, he attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, graduating with a business degree in 1950. While a junior at UW-Madison, he served as pep chairman and developed the idea of placing a papier mache Badger head on a cheerleader, replacing the live, uncooperative badgers previously used. It was his idea to name the new mascot Buckingham U. Badger, Bucky. In 1999, in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the birth of Bucky Badger, the university honored Bill as their Grand Marshall for the homecoming parade. While at the university he lettered three times as a varsity oarsman. He was a member of the National W Club, the Bascom Hill Society, and Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. On September 12, 1953 Bill and Mary Young were united in marriage in Madison. For many years Bill was a VicePresident of Robert W. Baird & Co. and managed its Sheboygan office. He was a founding partner of Milwaukee-based Capital Investment Services of America until his retirement.

Bill was involved in many local organizations, including serving as past president of the Sheboygan Kiwanis Club. He was also a very active member of both St. Clement Catholic Parish in Sheboygan and later at St. John Evangelist Catholic Parish in Kohler. In addition to his wife, Mary, he is survived by his son, William Sachse, Jr. of Whitefish Bay, WI, his daughter, Anne Sachse of Fox Point, WI, and his daughter-in-law, Susan Sachse of Scottsdale, AZ; three grandchildren, Taylor, Lisa, and Jackson Sachse of Scottsdale, AZ. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Sachse and his son, Stephen Sachse. A Memorial Mass was celebrated on May 24, 2012 at St. John Evangelist Catholic Church in Kohler.

Kohler graduate demonstrates extraordinary achievements in academics, sports and community service
SHEBOYGAN, WIS. Melyssa Louwagie, daughter of Randy and Cheri Louwagie of Kohler, is the recipient of the 2012 Sheboygan Rotary Club scholarship of $8,000. Her award was announced at the clubs annual Good Citizenship and Scholarship Awards Night on April 26 at the Sheboygan Yacht Club. An accomplished soprano soloist, Ms. Louwagie entertained the Yacht Club audience after dinner with the Black Swan by Gian Carlo Menotti from The Medium. Ms. Louwagie currently is completing her senior year at Kohler High School, carrying a 4.0 out of 4.0 grade point average. She plans to attend Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio next fall, where she plans to major in biology and eventually pursue a career as a physician. Among her academic awards are Highest Honor Roll, Academic Certificates of Honor, Davidson Young Scholar, AP Scholar, National Merit Program Scholar, Coca-Cola Scholars Program Semi-Finalist, Kohl Excellence Scholarship Award and National Honor Society Member. Ms. Louwagie participates on the Kohler High School Math Team, Forensics Team, and as a team leader in Testing the Waters, an extracurricular science enrichment program. She has attended the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine, and was a speaker at the Wisconsin Association for Gifted and Talented Conference. Ms. Louwagies exemplary service credentials include her conceptualizing and launching of the Walk a Mile Without Shoes Walkathon for Haiti, which took place in October 2011 in Sheboygan County, gathering more than 300 pairs of shoes for the needy. Ms. Louwagie brought the shoes to Haiti herself, as part of her second eight-day mission trip to this poverty-stricken Caribbean country in January 2012. She serves as a volunteer at Sheboygan County YMCA, tutors biology, is an American Red Cross blood drive volunteer, and has performed with the Sheboygan Theatre Company Singers to raise funds for the organization. Her athletic credentials include Wendys Heisman Female School Winner and Triple Varsity Letter Winner in a Single School Year; she serves on the Kohler High School tennis team, cheerleading team, track team and dance team. Ms. Louwagie is a YMCA gymnastics instructor who has coached classes and team gymnasts ages 3 to 16, including at a national meet. Moreover, Ms. Louwagies time at Kohler High School has had a strong focus in the performing arts, where she has performed as a member of the CLC Honors Choir and CLC Honors Band. She has performed in multiple musical productions, served on the drama club, in the swing choir and Kohler Madrigals, in the jazz band and concert choir, the symphony honors band and pep band, and sang the National Anthem at the YMCA National Gymnastics Championship. The Sheboygan Rotary Foundation funds the Sheboygan Rotary Club scholarship. Major factors in the selection of recipients are involvement in school activities, academic achievement, record of community service and/or work experience, and career interests as expressed in a brief essay. Sheboygan Rotary Club members engage in fund raising activities in order to support this and other projects in the Sheboygan area.

Submitted by the Kohler School Board of Education As we approach the end of another school year, the Kohler School Board has been reflecting on recent accomplishments as well as on the work to come. The 20112012 school year has been busy, energizing, and successful. Major commitments have been met, many which lay the ground work for continued success. The Board is sharing our major accomplishments to celebrate all the hard work of our teachers, administrative staff and students. The list of accomplishments below is organized according to the strategic priorities of the districts strategic plan. This plan provides a long-range vision, a means to organize our work, and a tool to monitor progress towards our goals. We will welcome a new elementary principal and work to expand our positive school culture with our new elementary school leader. Falls Lions, KpAL team up to stage Oktoberfest

by Jeff Pederson Sheboygan Falls News Editor For those looking to have a good time and support the community while doing so, River Park in Sheboygan Falls will be the place to be during the first weekend of fall. The Sheboygan Falls Lions Club and Kohler Police Athletic League (KPAL) have joined forces to hold the first annual Oktoberfest event Friday, Sept. 21 and Saturday, Sept. 22. Sheboygan Falls Lions Club Vice President and Oktoberfest Co-Chairperson Al Mayer said the event has been in the works for over a year. Ever since the Sheboygan Falls Jaycees disbanded and Falls Fest ended, we felt that it was important to bring back a large-scale community festival type of event that would have a little bit of something for everyone, Mayer said. We felt fall was a perfect time to do it. The weather is generally a little cooler and more comfortable that it is in July or August and we also wanted to draw on the Oktoberfest theme. Mayer said partnering with KPAL has helped to transform the event from an idea into a reality. The Lions Club has been thinking about this for quite a while, but we felt we needed more help to make it happen, Mayer said. Getting together with KPAL has been the key to it all. As partners, I'm confident we can make this into a special event year in and year out. Activity is slated to begin Friday, Sept. 21 at 5 p.m. with the highly popular Pat McCurdy Band slated to perform. We are really excited to have Pat McCurdy come to perform, he said. They are a really good draw and have a great following throughout the area. We think that will be a good way to kick off the weekend. We are hoping to have one more band on Friday night and five bands on Saturday, so there will be no lack of music. On Saturday, Sept. 22, Oktoberfest will run in conjunction with the annual Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Walk to Cure Diabetes fundraising event for individuals coping with type 1 diabetes. We are also very excited to join with the JDRF organization for their Walk to Cure Diabetes event on Saturday, Mayer said. That event always draws a nice crowd of 500 to 800 people, so we think it will be of great benefit to both organizations to run our events simultaneously. In addition to the walk, we are hoping to put together some type of running event as well, which we hope can draw even more interest, he said. In addition to the live music and JDRF walk, Oktoberfest will feature a wide range of other activities, events and contests. Inflatable activities for kids will be offered free of charge, along with other youth-oriented events. We want this to be a family event, so we have been focusing on offering things that everyone in the family can do, KPAL member and Oktoberfest Co-Chair Jeff Romanoski said. We will have all kinds of free inflatables for small kids right up through adults. We are also planning to have kids' games and face painting, as well as a bean bag toss competition, he said. Our goal is to be as price-conscious as possible, so everyone can come and take part. Mayer is hoping to offer a hole-inone golf contest, but has yet to receive clearance from the city. Our hope is to have a floating green in the lagoon that people can shoot at to try for a hole in one, Mayer said. We are talking to the city about doing that, but we haven't had that approved yet. If we do get to do it, I think it would be a big hit. In keeping with the Oktoberfest theme, a home brewing demonstration and contest is also in the works. We want to have all the home brewers in the area get together for a demonstration and for taste testing, Mayer said. We would also like to do a contest with judging. Mayer also hopes to get local businesses involved in the bean bag toss competition. We want to do a bean bag toss contest for all age levels, he said. Our goal is to get the business community involved, so that we have a corporate division where businesses will form teams and compete against each other. The Pine Haven men's organization will serve a pancake breakfast in the large pavilion on Saturday morning. The pavilion area is also tentatively scheduled to bingo and polka bands later in the day on Saturday. The Sheboygan Falls Lions Club, which boasts approximately 70 members, hopes to use the proceeds from the event to raise funds for the new westside park project KAPL, which features 75 mem-

Kohler High School Freshmen Lily Hart and Annika Lee were among the finalists in the 2012 Wisconsin History Day State Event held on May 5, 2012, and will advance to the national competition in Washington DC June 10-14. The first round of competition took place at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Northeastern Wisconsin Regions National History Day competition on April 14, 2012, where nearly 400 high school and middle school students from 19 schools from around Northeast Wisconsin competed for a chance to advance to the national competition. The students worked individually or in small teams to submit history projects for this years theme, Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History. Students research their chosen topic by using diaries, letters, film footage, photos, and oral histories, then have the option of submitting their findings as papers, documentaries, exhibits, websites,

The goal is also to sustain things going forward, so we can continue to have a successful event for many years to come. Open Book and Board of Review The Village Assessor will be holding an Open Book session at the Village Hall on Tuesday, July 10th. To schedule an appointment with the assessor, please call Associated Appraisal at 1-800-721-4157. Open Book is an opportunity for property owners to meet with the assessor and examine the records for their property and discuss how the assessment was made. Time spent discussing your assessment with the assessor may eliminate the need for a formal appeal to the Board of Review. At open book, the assessor is allowed to make any changes that are necessary to perfect the assessment roll. The Village of Kohler Board of Review will meet Tuesday, July 17th beginning at 5:00 p.m. Property owners that want to appear before the Board of Review to appeal their assessment must provide the clerktreasurer with written or oral notice of their intent to file an objection at least 48 hours before the meeting of the Board. Also, a written and signed Form of Objection to Property Assessment must be filled out and filed with the clerk within the first 2 hours of the Boards first scheduled meeting.

The deadline for requesting absentee ballots is Friday, May 4.
police Intern: The Kohler Police Department has a college intern again this year, Natalie VanDyke, who will be starting her second year of school at Lakeshore Technical College this fall. Natalie will be riding with the officers and assisting the police department throughout the summer. College interns that work for the police department are unpaid and earn college credits based upon the number of hours worked. If you recognize the name, its because Natalie attended Kohler High School, graduating in 2010. Our interns get utilized for as many special events as possible, including the Bike Safety Day, 4th of July Fireworks, Brat Trot and other special events. This summer will require some extra work on Natalies part during the USWO and the Centennial events for the Village.
New part-time Officer: The Kohler Police Department recently hired Bradley Robinson to be its newest part-time officer. Brad has been working as a full time Deputy for the Sheboygan County Sheriffs Dept. since 2003 and will be patrolling the Village soon. The main reason for the additional part-time officer is to add to the officers available to work during the US Womens Open in July. The Village will be a busy place that week, and we want to be able to respond to all the calls that we would normally be able to deal with.
sponsoring the Bike Safety Day on Saturday June 9th at 12:30 pm. The event is being held at the Village Hall. Licenses are required and are available for $2.50 for any bikes with wheels larger than 16. Anyone that needs a license can download the bike license form from www.kohlerpolice.com and have it filled out before you arrive. There will be forms available the day of, but it would make that portion go more quickly. All participants will receive an inspection of their bike, a free helmet and a bike accessory. We will also be supplying free soda and chips after the days events. Last year we had a good turn out with great weather. We hope to see you again this year.

A storable pool is any pool which holds 1000 gallons of water or more. Storable pools must be located 35 feet from all lot lines and meet ALL electrical codes for the pump.

Performing Kohler musician Arts Auction earns music honors Overwhelming

The Kohler music department is proud to announce that Andrew Grose was selected to the 2012 Wisconsin School Music Association State High School Honors Band. This honor recognizes Andrew as one of the top six high school percussionist in the state of Wisconsin. The WSMA State Honors Band comprises of 80 of the top high school band musicians throughout the state. The WSMA State Honors Band will rehearse in June and perform at the Wisconsin State Music Conference in October at the Overture Hall in Madison. Andrew will have the opportunity to work with guest conductor Dr. Carolyn Barber, Director of Bands and Director of Winds Studies at the University of Nebraska. Andrew is the son of Greg and Jennifer Grose.

College prep Biology students complete biotechnology unit

College Prep Biology students at Kohler High School have recently completed the biotechnology component of the biology curriculum. Biotechnology is the technology of using living things to create useful products. Biotechnology has historically been used in the making of bread, wine, soap, the treatment of waste, and the production of cheese. Selective breeding of agricultural animals and selective practices in crop planting have occurred for hundreds of years. Biotechnology has changed due to the advancements of technologies such as computers and software in the 1970s to include the development of human insulin for the treatment of diabetes, human growth hormone for children, and identification of specific genes responsible for genetic disorders, and in some cases treatment for those disorders. College Prep Biology students learn and then use the steps necessary to move a gene from one organism to another. The process

All proceeds are used to fund summer music camp scholarships for middle school band and chorus students and the high school band and chorus performance trips. GLOBE is a worldwide program composed of students, teachers, and scientists that work together to investigate and learn more about the environment. Students and their teachers across the globe are in charge of collecting and sharing data with other scientists and programs. Students in over 111 countries participate in GLOBE data collection led by over 54,000 trained teachers. The Kohler GLOBE Program is among 24,000 other schools that also collect data across the globe. The GLOBE program in Kohler is made up of students in College Prep Biology and General Biology. These students share the responsibilities of collecting and recording atmospheric data every school day. Older students in College Prep Chemistry, Advanced Honors Biology, and College Prep Physics contribute to the collection of hydrology data during the fall and spring. These students make up the Kohler Testing the Waters Team. The atmospheric data collected by
students in GLOBE is entered onto an international web-site data base. Students enter measurements like high and low temperatures, amounts of precipitation and pH, cloud type, and relative humidity. When combined with other data presented by students and teachers throughout countries around the world, scientists can interpret and observe changes in the environment. Varsity spring sports highlights

Seven Kohler High School boys track team members qualified at the Princeton regional on May 24th for the WIAA Track & Field State Championships to be held on June 1 and 2 at UW-La Crosse. Charles Olmsted qualified by finishing fourth in the 110 meter high hurdles and third in the 300 meter low hurdles. Olmsteds qualifying time of 15.36 in the 110 hurdles is the sixth fastest among the 18 hurdlers who will be competing at the state meet. The boys 1600 meter relay team of Brett Mueller, Joe Pellowski, Dominic Bocchini, and Garrett Griswold finished third at the regional with a time of 3:34.44, which is also the sixth fastest among their events state qualifiers. The 3200 meter relay team finished second at the regional, giving Griswold and Pellowski their second ticket to the state meet, along with relay members Eric Mehoke and Ryan Zittel. Although the team at large did not qualify for state, Kohler finished a very respectable eighth among 29 teams at the regional.

Mrs. Eickholts 5th grade class and Mrs. DePagters 3rd grade classes learned about invasive species in Wisconsin for the Step it up challenge. The Kohler boys tennis team tied for third at the 11-team Division 2 Kohler sectional on May 24 at the Sports Core. Number one seed Tyler Lewis, who ended the Eastern Wisconsin Conference undefeated, qualified for the WIAA State Individual Tennis Tournament, which runs from May 31 to June 2, by winning his quarterfinal and semi-final singles matches over a player from Lakeland High School and a state qualifier from Appleton Xavier. In the championship, Lewis lost a tough match to Manitowoc Roncalli's Lucas Waak 6-2, 7-6. Waack is seeded second at the 32-player state D-2 tournament, and Lewis is seeded sixth. The Blue Bombers top doubles team of Kyle Struck and Tim Valicenti also ended the Eastern Wisconsin Conference undefeated, and was a one seed at the sectional. Consumer Economics students, Philip Samuels and Alex Vander Schaaf placed eighth in the High School Division of the Wisconsin Stock Market Simulation (SMS) 10-week state competition for the Spring 2012 semester. Two other Kohler teams that participated included Mari Marzano, Seerena Yang, Abby Lee, and Rachel Maggi; Kevin Gullet and Ryan Mauer. Overall, a total of 1,298 teams from across Wisconsin participated. The Stock Market Simulation helps students learn how to invest in the stock market without using real money. Students manage hypothetical $100,000 investment portfolios as they compete for a trip to New York City to tour the New York Stock Exchange. Ten week games are offered each semester. A separate year long program runs each September to April. It is correlated to voluntary national and state standards in math, economics, business education, English language arts, family and consumer sciences, technology and social studies. The Stock Market Game is available to all public and private school students throughout Wisconsin. The program is offered by Economics Wisconsin, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Since 1963, the organization has helped elementary and secondary teachers gain competence and confidence teaching about the free market economic system. Through its eight Centers for Economic Education located at universities and colleges across the state, the Milwaukee based organization provides resources to teachers to promote economic understanding and financial literacy.

Superintendent's Report The students presented very well at the School Safety Advisory Council National Bullying Conference. The curriculum review for math and English and Language Arts are ongoing. Marty is looking for an elementary/middle school principal with a strong background in reading and experience as principal or assistant principal is preferred. He would like to do some site visits before a candidate is hired. Hopefully, someone will be in place very soon as the technology coordinator. The I-pads and laptops are in the school. We are waiting for carts to arrive. Review of District Finances The budget looks like it is on track for the current year. We project for a revenue/ expenditure gap of approximately $85,000 based on this years costs for the 2012-2013 school year. Consent Agenda

testing the Water program recap

The Testing the Waters Program is a science enrichment program that allows students to participate in a community service project and also encourages them to use some of their biology and chemistry skills. The students listed participated in this years water testing program at Kohler High School. These students were actively involved in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting biology and chemistry data related to the water quality of the Sheboygan River. The Kohler group was responsible for testing the river near Black Wolf Run Golf Course. Some of the tests included dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, total phosphates, nitrates, turbidity, total solids, fecal coliform, and macroinvertebrates. The water test results were sent to the Maywood Environmental Center, and also to the local Department of Natural Resources. The Kohler students also participated in an Earth Day Program at Maywood in April, and a Water Quality Forum in May. Students had the opportunity to suggest explanations for their findings, and work together to explore possible action plans that might have a positive impact on the areas land conservation and the environment. Ms. Krejcarek is the science teacher leading this group.

Review of District Finances Update on current year budget: we remain on track with any areas of overage balanced by underspent accounts. If the technology funds budgeted at $40,000 are not needed as a contingency, we will order new laptops for teachers in early to mid May. The budget gap for the 2012-13 school year is currently estimated at approximately $85,000; we continue to refine priorities for the coming school year. These will be shared with the Board at the Committee of the Whole meeting at the end of April. Friday FAIRway Festival July 6 The Shops at Woodlake Street Fair 5-8pm Concert 8-10pm Join the Shops at Woodlake and Woodlake Market for a completely new and original event. The Friday FAIRway Festival takes place as the second day of tournament play finishes at the U.S. Womens Open. Fun for the entire family, this street fair features a picnic by Woodlake Market, childrens carnival area, cocktail demonstrations, food and wine tastings, street performers and specialty musicians, sand sculptures, caricature artists, and complimentary demonstrations by the Kohler Golf Academy. Independence Day Celebration and Sousa Concert July 4 Ravine Park in Kohler The annual 4th of July Celebration kicks off at 6pm in Ravine Park. The Traditional Sousa Concert will begin at 8:30pm, with special guest John Philip Sousa IV, direct descendant of the patriotic composer, narrating the concert. Movie in the Park July 3 Ravine Park in Kohler Get into the golf spirit with an outdoor movie. Celebrating the U.S. Womens Open, The American Club Resort invites spectators and locals alike to enjoy the Wisconsin summer night with an outdoor movie viewing. Movie will be golf-themed. Concessions and beverages will be available for sale before and during the movie which starts at dusk (approximately 8:30pm). Admission is free. Rain location: Appley Theater.
