Summer has arrived!

This can be such a carefree, yet productive time of year. On one hand, schools out, your employer may offer summer hours, you dont have to grab a coat or sweatshirt on your way out the door, and many families make time to take getaways. Aah, this is the life! On the other hand, with June being the month with the longest daylight hours of the year; oh, the things we can accomplish! Do-ityourself projects, landscape maintenance, tending the garden and, well, see your to-do list. Speaking of things some of us dont care to do, why wont men go to see their health practitioners? In fact, according to AskMen.com, Inc. women go to health specialists four times more frequently than men do. Their survey revealed these top 5 responses from men when asked why: No. 1 I dont have time. No. 2 Because my wife/mother/sister nags me. No. 3 Lack of female encouragement (aka nagging). No. 4 Ill tough it out. No. 5 Im fine. It seems unless there is a major problem, men arent going to their health practitioners for prevention. Since June 11-17 (ending with Fathers Day) is National Mens Health Week, I ask that all of you male readers honor that by making an appointment if you havent had a visit in a while. Do your families and yourselves a favor and go! Our authors have some great articles for all of you, men and women, this month. Kathy Larson poses the question, Is your weight hurting your relationship? and the answer may surprise you. Alexandria Binkowski shares what you can learn from a photo of your aura, interesting! Caitlin Brotz has some natural skin care tips for all of you gardeners. And, of course, there are many more, so enjoy! Happy Fathers Day to all of you dads out there! Make some time to enjoy a healthy getaway or get-together with your family.

In health and happiness,

P.S. And for all of you No. 3s out there, "Make an appointment already!"

Do you have a comment or question about something you read in Nature's Pathways? Is there a story you'd like to read? How about something you didn't like as much? Be cautious with vaccines, provide natural nutrition, socialize! ......................................................................
By Dr. Jodie

eterinarians promote vaccination as a means to a good early start for babies. There are some vaccinations that save lives, but some vaccination protocols are excessive, risky and a waste of money!

A puppy or kittens immune system is not competent to respond to a vaccine until eight weeks of age.
A puppy or kittens immune system is not competent to respond to a vaccine until eight weeks of age. Therefore, breeders and veterinarians should not begin vaccinating until that time. Vaccines should never be given closer together than two to four weeks apart. To establish whether or not a vaccine has caused an animal to mount an adequate immune response, a blood titer test may be performed. Getting a shot does not protect your pet; it is the bodys immune response to the vaccine that protects the animal, and NOT all animals respond! The presence of mothers antibodies in a puppy or kitten can prevent a vaccine from stimulating an immune response. Vaccinate only with the AVMA-recommended core vaccines. Importantly, this does NOT include leptospirosis. Although the disease is a zoonotic (can be transmitted from dogs to humans via urine), the vaccine is ineffective and is notorious for causing reactions such as facial swelling and even immune-mediated bleeding disorders. A sensible protocol is to vaccinate puppies and kittens twice, one month apart, ideally at eight and twelve weeks of age. Dogs receive distemper, hepatitis (adenovirus), parainfluenza and parvo vaccines. This is an all-in-one vaccine and should not be given with any other vaccines, such as rabies. Rabies vaccine is generally given to pups at four months or later. This is repeated in one

Natures Pathways | June 2012

www.naturespathways.com

year, and then every three years. Do a titer test on puppies at four months to see if the distemper and parvo levels are protective. Cats receive distemper (panleukopenia), rhinotracheitis (herpes virus) and calici virus vaccines. An intranasal vaccine seems to cause fewer reactions. The state of Wisconsin does not require rabies vaccine in cats. Be sure to test all new kittens, especially those being brought into a household with other cats, for the feline leukemia (FeLV) and feline immunosuppressive (FIV) viruses. Like HIV, cats with these viruses can appear healthy and transmit these disorders to other cats before they exhibit symptoms and succumb to the disease. If you identify that your new, little one has an immunosuppressive disorder, you can provide healthy immune support early in life to try to delay onset of illness. Remember, vaccine inserts say, Vaccinate (only) healthy animals. Dont let anyone vaccinate your pet if he is ill or has a chronic condition. The immune system has enough to do in managing that disorder. Dont ask it to properly handle a vaccine on top of it! Ask your veterinarian how your pet might contract a disease to guide your decision, based on your pets lifestyle, as whether or not to vaccinate to try to prevent a particular disease. Proper nutrition is critical to a great start for a puppy or kitten! Learn as much as you can about species-appropriate diets because they make sense and they promote excellent quality of life and longevity. In nature, a dog might eat a rabbit, a cat might chow down on a mouse. Wild carnivores provide these foods for their babies as they are weaned. If this is what God intended, how can we mimic this as closely as possible for our little carnivores in confinement? Thankfully, there are a variety of high-quality, safe, balanced, commercial frozen raw diets on the market. These diets make
www.naturespathways.com

feeding a species-appropriate diet convenient, easy and delicious! In your fridge, you can thaw a few neat little nuggets or meat balls and place them into a stainless steel bowl or ceramic saucer for serving. Be sure to add a little hot water to take off the cold edge. Remember, prey is raw, but not cold! This meat diet is the prey-concept. It is crucial that a meat-based diet contain four components: flesh; organs; raw ground bone or whole raw bone or calcium added; fruits or vegetables blended to mimic the pre-digestion that occurs in the gut of the prey. Especially for growing pets, the calcium:phosphorous ratio is critical. Commercial diets have been analyzed to be sure this is correct. Feeding these brands would be much safer than a home-prepared haphazard diet. Lastly, proper socialization of puppies and kittens is key to a long, happy life in association with your human household. Even a two-pound purse puppy needs a lot of exercise and play! Confinement or excessive snuggling can lead to aggression, anxiety and destructive behaviors or elimination problems. Babies play hard and sleep hard. Provide a stimulating environment for your kitten and a safe environment for your puppy. Cat trees are fantastic and crate training can be a life saver. Pet sitters and doggy daycares provide a wonderful service for todays busy pet guardians! Most important, enjoy and have fun theyre not little for long!

is your weight hurting your relationship with your partner? ......................................................................

By Kathy larson

oo often, weight is a major contributing factor to the demise of a relationship. According to the New York Times, national statistics state that 35.7 percent of the adult population is obese and that divorce/separation is increasing in our country. Some research now suggests that marital status is related to one or both partners being overweight. I feel its essential that we start taking responsibility for the direction that our lives are moving in. Every day we are given the choice to live a healthy lifestyle, be it what we eat, whether or not we choose to exercise, who we surround ourselves with, and so forth. Keeping in mind that every decision we make, or dont make for that matter, affects our self worth and self confidence. When we lack the belief in ourselves and our abilities, the vicious cycle simply continues and we revisit making poor choices that are unhealthy for our bodies, minds and inner selves. Remembering how others may label us, what we tell ourselves daily, and how we think, all impact who we allow ourselves to become both mentally and physically. In many cases, when we are dissatisfied with who weve become, we tend to lower our standards and live in what is referred to as our comfort zones. What I mean by this is we find a place of what we think to be solitude, when really its merely this ideal place thats simple, safe and doesnt require much effort. For some, comfort is in the food that we choose to eat, the portion sizes, and the frequency of the meals and snacks. It gives us a sense of control we feel weve lost in other areas of our lives. For others, its learned behavior from childhood or horrific experiences we have had. Either way, it affects all aspects of our lives, thus we become overweight. Its also important to mention that being overweight negatively affects our most intimate relationships because our selfesteem has been lowered; thus we dont feel capable of keeping our partner happy because we ourselves are not happy.

Natures Pathways | June 2012

Losing weight and adapting to a healthy lifestyle requires a lot of change, change that your partner may not be ready for. Some signs that the need for weight loss in a relationship has become evident can be: A guilty feeling about your weight is more constant and affecting your self image. You dont fit into most of your clothing and you dont want to go shopping. You begin to look down at your partner and lose respect for him or her. Your partner makes negative comments about how your body is changing. Some ideas for lessening the stress in your relationship and placing too much emphasis on one anothers weight might be for you to: Encourage and support one anothers ideas for wanting to be healthier and lose weight. Communicate with one another how what your partner is saying or doing makes you feel unattractive to them. Give one another suggestions on what your meals and snacks allotted in the house should be. Shop for something fun together, a new piece of cardiovascular equipment for the household, where there can be no excuses for the lack of its use. Either way, if you fell in love with someone when they were at a certain weight and they are no longer, then maybe you need to remember what truly attracted you to that person. I understand when we arent happy with ourselves physically it can negatively change how our minds and personalities develop going forward. However, remembering that when one feels unloved or unlovable,
www.naturespathways.com

it only worsens the chances of turning the tables on re-establishing a healthier lifestyle. Relationships are a challenge to begin with. With two people who care for one another, struggling to find balance to meet both of your needs on all levels, is and can be very difficult to do consistently. Now throw in the Im not physically attracted to you anymore or I hate the way I look feelings daily and you leave opportunity for heightened relationship issues that will only worsen if not supported in a loving way. Take the time to love unconditionally, but most importantly, take the time to hear one another because listening to one anothers most intimate feelings can be invaluable. Its really one way to truly re-connect to one anothers hearts, and only there can you find the love you once had for one another. Thus, a huge opportunity exists to make a change and lose weight for all of the right reasons and, most importantly, to regain ones self worth. I leave you with this quote I absolutely love: You learn to like someone when you find out what makes them laugh, but you can never truly love someone until you find out what makes them cry. expert answers to your health and wellness questions ......................................................................

By Karmen nenahlo

Question: My 6-year-old son wants to eat hot lunch every day because his friends do, but I know I could make him some healthier options here at home. Any advice? Answer: This is probably an issue that a lot of parents deal with. Sadly, the nutritional guidelines for public schools are terrible, which gives them a license to serve cheap, processed food. That being said, some schools make more of an effort in the area of nutrition than others. Therefore, it really depends on what your son has available to him at his school. Some schools actually offer salad bars and fresh fruit as staples, which is a good thing, but many dont even go this far. My recommendation would be to pack him a cold lunch as the standard, but then look at the school lunch menu with him and pick out a few days that both of you approve of. This gives him a little control over his own food choices, but also lets you lay the ground rules for lunchtime eating. Ideally, the focus should be on healthful food options, and with careful planning, I think this can be accomplished with a combination of both cold and hot lunches. Question: Is it wise to include supersets in my workouts and, if so, what are the advantages? Answer: Supersets involve performing two exercises back-to-back with little or no rest in between. And if youre looking to change up your workouts a bit, theyre definitely worth a try. There are numerous superset variations, but the most common types would be same muscle supersetting or antagonistic supersetting. As the name implies, same muscle supersetting incorporates two different exercises for the same muscle group. For example, one set of dumbbell chest presses could be followed by barbell incline press. Antagonistic supersetting involves opposing muscle groups, so you might combine
12

biceps curls with triceps extensions, again with no rest in between sets. No matter what type of supersetting you engage in, there are three obvious advantages to utilizing this method of training. First of all, doing supersets saves time, which is clearly advantageous when people want to get in and get out. It also allows an individual to train at a higher intensity, which can produce better results in the long run. And lastly, because supersetting allows for increased workout intensity without using very heavy weights, the likelihood of injury decreases significantly. Give em a try and see what you think! Question: A couple of my friends have recently started juicing. What are your thoughts? Answer: Juicers are quite popular these days, but heres my take on the whole juicing phenomenon. Occasionally, Ill meet people that just hate fruit and vegetables. They pretty much avoid them altogether. But interestingly, a few of these individuals have said that juicing seems to work for them. They dont seem to have a problem drinking their fruits and veggies. If this is the case for you or someone you know, I say, go for it. However, we need to remember that most juicers remove virtually all of the fiber as the fruits and vegetables are processed. If you add in the research that shows that fiber may provide much of the health benefits attributed to fruits and vegetables, we have a problem here. I would argue its much better to eat fruits and vegetables intact the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber. Plus, most folks consume far too little fiber anyway, so juicing is just going to exacerbate this problem. Bottom line save your money and stick with whole fruits and vegetables whenever possible.

is popcorn a new super food? ......................................................................

ove over fruits and vegetables. Popcorn might have more antioxidants and be more capable of improving the immune system than many items in the produce aisle. Popcorn has been enjoyed as a snack for centuries. Although its inventor is unknown, popcorn ears have been found in Mexican caves dating back 5,600 years. Peruvian Indians in the 16th century were known to eat popcorn and also use it as a decoration on necklaces and head dresses. In North America, popcorn is largely associated with going to the movies. According to special collections at the National Agriculture Library, North Americans consume roughly 17.3 billion quarts of popped corn each year. People who enjoy popcorn as a snack may be happy to learn this crunchy food has manyhealthbenefits. According to recent information from researchers at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania, popcorn contains more antioxidants than fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants are known to help fight and protect against cancer, heart disease and other ailments. Although it was previously known that popcorn contained antioxidants known as polyphenols, the exact amounts of the phenols remained a mystery. Joe Vinson, a Ph.D. who presented the popcorn findings at the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society, found that there are twice as many phenols in popcorn per serving as there is in sweet corn or fruit. This is largely due to the high water content in fresh fruits and vegetables. Water content in foods can dilute polyphenols by as much as 90 percent, says Vinsons research. Popped corn is very low in water so it has a much higher concentration of polyphenols. For those who want to add extra nutrient power to popcorn, consider mixing in dried fruits, like raisins and dried cranberries. Along the same premise, the low water content of dried fruits ensures the dried fruits contain more antioxidants than their fresh, juicy counterparts. Another benefit to popcorn is it is made from an entirely unprocessed whole grain. A serving of popcorn can offer more than 70
www.naturespathways.com

percent of the recommended daily value of whole grain in a diet. People may want to skip those enriched cereals and breads and choose low-fat popcorn instead. Although the findings about the nutritional value of popcorn are promising, this does not mean individuals should give up on fruits and vegetables. Those foods contain other vitamins and nutrients that popcorn does not, such as vitamin C. Also, dousing popcorn with salt and butter negates its nutritional benefits. The best way to enjoy popcorn is to pop it with air and eat it plain. Microwave popcorn is another healthy method of making popcorn, provided its a no-butter variety. And dont skip the annoying kernels. It appears that the highest concentration of polyphenols are contained in those hard bits that have a tendency to get caught between the teeth. It has long been known that popcorn is a healthy snack. Now researchers have discovered just how much of an antioxidant powerhouse popcorn can be.

how to recognize if your child has a vision problem ......................................................................

arents want their kids to be as healthy as possible. Whether tailoring kids diets to include healthier foods or encouraging their youngsters to be physically active, parents often go the extra mile with regard to the health of their children. But as hard as parents may try, some health-related issues are difficult to avoid or prevent. For example, even the most conscientious parents might have little influence over their childrens vision. Many children have a form of myopia, commonly known as nearsightedness, which progressively worsens as kids get older, but eventually stabilizes when their eyes have stopped growing, typically in a young adults early 20s. Myopia is common and treatable, but parents should still educate themselves about it so they can better respond should they suspect their child is suffering from nearsightedness.

what causes myopia?

When a person has myopia, light entering his or her eye is focused incorrectly. Nearsighted people usually have an eyeball that is slightly longer than normal from front to back, and the light rays that make up the images a nearsighted person sees focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it. The result is that objects that are far away appear blurry.

classroom. Children who tell their teacher they need to move closer to the chalkboard should be taken to the eye doctor. Parents who suspect their child might be nearsighted can talk to their childs teacher and ask if the teacher feels the child might be struggling with his or her vision. Such struggles can affect how a child performs in school. Children who get frequent headaches might also be suffering from nearsightedness. Doctors recommend that kids have their eyes examined at six months, three years of age and prior to entering the first grade. But even if kids have passed previous eye examinations at each of those benchmarks, its best to take them for another exam the moment a vision problem is suspected.

Kids likely wont tell their parents that they are struggling to see distant objects clearly, so its important for parents to look for indicators that a child might be struggling with myopia. Kids who are nearsighted might squint to see objects that are far away, including the television. One of the telltale indicators is how a child behaves in the

is myopia preventable?

Since it is often inherited, myopia is not preventable. However, treatment can significantly minimize its effects. Children who appear to be struggling to see distant objects clearly should be taken for an eye exam. That exam may include an eye pressure measurement; a refraction test, which is used to determine a correct prescription

for eyeglasses; a retinal examination and a visual acuity test, which measures sharpness of vision at close and far distances. When a child is diagnosed as being nearsighted, the doctor will likely prescribe eyeglasses or contact lenses. LASIK surgery can correct vision, but many surgeons are reticent to recommend such surgery until a patients eye has fully developed, which does not occur until after childhood.

There are additional symptoms of childhood vision problems that might not indicate nearsightedness, but might indicate another problem that should result in a trip to the eye doctor. For example, a child might close one eye when watching television or reading. This could be indicative that vision in one eye is poorer than the other. Young children who struggle to color within the lines might have an issue with their hand-eye coordination. Poor hand-eye coordination could be the result of a vision impairment. Children who tilt their head to one side to improve vision might be suffering from a vision problem that makes it difficult for them to look directly down. Vision problems can negatively affect how a child performs in school as well as in social situations. Though such vision problems are not always preventable, parents who can identify them can greatly minimize their effects.

Aura photography
By Alexandria S. Binkowski, mh, nD, mS

s it true? Can we really take pictures to see our auras? Yes, we can! I know some of you are thinking, What the heck is an aura? There are various definitions of the word aura, but the one I am writing about is the energy field (or subtle bodies) that surrounds, encompasses and permeates the human body. We are energy beings. To l i v e on this planet we must have an electromagnetic energy field. All humans, animals, plants, rocks, trees, anything living have it. We experience this energy constantly. It activates our thoughts, emotions and actions. It is the substance that gives us the quality we call life. This life substance is like electricity, as it flows through us it makes us work and it creates an energy field. This energy field is made up of colors, layers of frequencies and patterns of flow. Your aura is like an energetic blueprint for who you are. The outer layers carry information about a persons mood and well-being in the moment; middle layers portray your health, emotional patterns, relationships, and your strengths and vulnerabilities; and at the most profound layers,

your aura can change according to your life experiences and your view of life.

your true self and your life purpose are revealed. Your aura can change according to your life experiences and your view of life. These can be positive or negative changes that affect your physical health, mental status, consciousness and overall well-being. There are gifted people that can see the colors and patterns with the naked eye or feel the frequencies of others auras. The history of auras goes far back into the past. Natural tribes, the Christian Mystics of the Middle Ages, painters and artists of all ages have shown the aura in a radiant, shining ray of lights around human beings, animals or plants. The scientific community has been fascinated by the aura since the early 1800s. The first aura photo was made by Russian scientist Nicola Tesla in 1891. The USSR expanded on his work through the development of Kirlian photography, a technique involving the photographing of subjects in the presence of a highfrequency, high-voltage, low-amp, electrical field, which displays glowing, multicolored emanations. One finding of Soviet scientists was that the biological energies of human beings were brightest at 700 points on the body, which concurs with Chinese acupuncture. Kirlians work mainly gained attention in the West during the 1960s, and by 1975 UCLA researchers Thelma Moss and Valerie Hunt were measuring the aura with precise accuracy.

Even when part of the leaf was cut off, the glowing portion of the amputated piece still appeared on film. Kirlian photography is being looked at for its applications in diagnostic medicine by being connected to CT and CAT scanners, which utilize a thin beam of x-rays, and MRI testing, which employs magnetic fields to produce images. It has been used by the Soviets in sports psychology to access an athletes metabolic process and fitness. It was an American, Guy Coggins, who took all of this research a step further. He created the first aura camera in 1982 and the first computer software program that detects auras. I am sure by now you are asking, How does it work? Aura photography is based on the understanding of modern technology combined with the information that past cultures have known for thousands of years. This includes Kirlian photography, electronic acupuncture, biofeedback measurements, as well as old healing methods like acupuncture, acupressure, ayurveda, etc. The method of Mr. Coggins technologies used to read ones aura is biofeedback, since a physical reading of ones bio-signs is the main method of an aura analysis. A camera and hand sensor is used in the process. The hand sensor measures the standardized biofeedback parameter by measuring your
www.naturespathways.com

electromagnetic field based on Ayurvedic acupressure points on the hand. The hand sensor itself has various contact points on it; these are connected with certain organs of the body and deliver information about the energetic, spiritual and auric qualities of the person. The hand sensor can also measure deviations in temperature, humidity, and static electricity in the environment and the person, allowing for greater precision in data gathering. These data parameters are then projected as a radiant, colored aura field around the body on either a Polaroid photo or onto a computer screen. I am fortunate to use the computer software program in my practice as a holistic psychotherapist and energy therapist. The newest technology is fascinating. It is called Interactive Aura Photography. As I am working with a client and helping them to change their aura, it is being measured in real time allowing us to see changes in their

emotional state live as it happens. Their personal aura colors may change considerably and it can also show the instability of their aura, especially if the emotional state of that person is not in balance. Generally, the aura picture does change with every emotional or mental change of the user; this enables us to see the kinds of effects that therapy and adjustments of personal vibrations can have upon ourselves. When therapy is done, printouts are produced showing your auric colors, before and after chakra changes, energetic status of inner organs, emotion meter, mind-body-spirit connection and your aura rate. The next technology to come is aura in 3D.

Will Allen and Growing Power producing compost and training the next generation of farmers
ters By Jackie Pe

The waste ingredients are out there, the relationships just need to be formed to connect those involved. Allen believes that every city needs a large-scale compost operation. If we created 10 million tons of compost last year, imagine what cities across the nation can do! It would certainly have a huge impact on our world. Growing Power uses all of this compost in every raised bed they grow crops in. The shortage of healthy soil is Allens number one challenge. In fact, his Community Food Center and Urban Farm property was the last piece of land in the city of Milwaukee zoned for agriculture. Unfortunately, its the same issue in every city, theres not good soil, laments Allen. Chemicals, like those emitted from factories or spread by lawn care services, kill the biology in the soil. By adding compost to contaminated, low-nutrient soil, gardeners can treat the soil by encouraging natural organisms at work there to break down contamination. It is a very fragile and natural process at work. Especially when you consider that scientists estimate that there are over four billion microorganisms in just a teaspoon of healthy soil. Compost awakens unhealthy soil so it can do its work. Healthy soil grows healthy plants that are then better able to defend from pests and diseases, as Allen points out. Soil fertility is everything! In order to reach his goal for the 20,000 Backyard Gardens initiative, Allen must ensure that every one of these new gardeners starts out with good soil. Garden by garden Allen is transforming portions of unutilized inner city backyards into fertile and abundant produce growing beds. That brings us to Allens number two challenge: attracting the next generation of urban farmers. Allen wants people of all backgrounds, ethnicities and income levels to step up and become his new kind of farmer the innovative farmer who brings new ideas to the table and works for a more integrated food system. By growing fresh fruits and vegetables right where they are most needed, these urban farmers are ensuring that their communities are provided with the most nutrient-rich food because it isnt sitting in semi trailers for days. These farmers work also reduces the consumption of gas for transporting healthy food from other parts of the state or country. Not everyone can grow food, Allen acknowledges, but I want to give those who can the education they need to be successful. I want to show people how to make a living at it. I want people to look at farming in a different way. A way that involves community.

A way that doesnt look at acres, but square footage how much you are able to get in the space you have. Allen feels strongly that having ready access to fresh, healthy vegetables and fruit is a social justice issue. Low-income people, who often live in the inner cities where there are very few supermarkets, are forced to rely on cheaper, less nutritious food for their sustenance. To be a part of the change, Allen continues to develop food distribution networks in urban areas. The more urban farmers we can educate and support, the more readily good, healthy food will be available to people from all walks of life, he says. Allen is certainly meeting his two main challenges head on. From finding ways to transform bad soil to recruiting and educating the new urban farmers, he has overcome some gigantic obstacles. All of this effort in support of his vision to take good food and transform communities. Now, in the words of Will Allen, Lets Get Growing! A monthly advice column for your energy system .....................................................................

Everything in the universe contains energy, yet energy is something many of us dont understand. Every month Tina Bensman, a practicing clairvoyant and energy healer, is here to answer any questions you have about your energy system. Topics may include energy anatomy, dream analysis, chakra balancing, manifestation, life patterns, etc. The ideas written here do not replace medical attention. Always listen to your body, mind and intuition when receiving advice of any kind. Dear Tina, My family and I just moved into a new house two months ago. Its everything we have ever wanted, however I cant settle in. I find myself wanting to rewind the clock and stay in our old house even though it was way too small for our growing family. My wife and kids love our new space, but I find myself getting more and more depressed and almost fearful. Could this be related to my energy? If so, what can I do to fix this? Unsettled Dear Unsettled, Change is always very difficult no matter what the circumstance. My first question is, do you feel this way every time a big change comes your way or just this one? Either way, yes, this is an energy issue related to grounding. Grounding is a connection to your personal foundation and, therefore, the part of your energy system that gives you stability, security and safety as well as the ability to release. Any time there is a big change, especially a change in your location, your grounding may become confused and not travel with you. You may feel depressed and fearful as you mentioned as well as irritable, confused, angry, unable to let go and incredibly stressed. You may also notice physical discomfort in your lower back and tailbone, and a dramatic change in your libido.

Imagine a tree with very strong roots. Whether the tree is healthy in its current location, or needs to be moved into a better environment, uprooting and moving it will cause trauma to the tree. Much care is needed to insure a successful transfer and healthy future. The same care is needed for your roots. Receiving an energy work session would be very beneficial to getting you back on track; however, in the meantime you can go through a meditation by imagining your entire body as a tree. Watch or feel as you grow roots through either your tailbone or your feet. Notice how deep the roots go down toward the center of the earth. Also notice if there are any points of resistance as they travel. Is the dirt filled with rocks or clay? If so, how can you clear it out? Dig, add water, remove rocks one by one? What would you do if you really had a tree to plant? Do the same for your system. It sounds incredibly simple, but it works!
Tina, a Madison intuitive counselor and energy healer, is a lifelong student of the paranormal. She had her first clairvoyant vision at a young age and continues to see and hear energy. Tina is trained in clairvoyant reading and many modalities of energy healing, but through professional training she was disappointed in the methods many schools used to devalue everyones natural gifts. Tina started The Chakra House to teach how natural and easy it is to work with energy. She believes that everyone has natural psychic gifts and can access their abilities if they realized their potential.

go electric for higher efficiency, lower costs .............................................

By Bob mair
lectric power is fast becoming the mode of choice for moving people and small loads around manufacturing complexes, farms and more. Low initial purchase prices, much lower operating costs, variety of uses and the long-term benefits of sustainability all have contributed to the rise of electric vehicles for many uses. In any type of business, the saying time is money has never been more appropriate. Many companies are feeling the stress of trying to maximize productivity to take advantage of growth opportunities, while at the same time, trying to control expenses to keep their bottom line from bottoming out. Electric power can assist in achieving both of these goals. Over the past few months, youve read here about how electric low speed vehicles (LSVs) can be used in both commercial and residential settings. This month I would like to address the opportunity of saving time and money in an industrial or commercial setting with industrial electric-powered vehicles. Industrial electric-powered vehicles like the Mega from Columbia ParCar Corp. or the Minute Mizer, made by Cushman, can be configured for the special demands of your company. MEE Material Handling, a Wisconsin company that has been serving the needs of industries for decades, is skilled at analyzing a companys needs and finding the proper industrial electric-powered vehicles and configuration for your companys requirements. Since industrial electric-powered vehicles like the Cushman Minute Mizer or Hauler can be charged in a standard 110 volt outlet, they can be charged easily by the people who are going to use them, near their own work station. This accessibility means less downtime while an employee goes to get their vehicle and no additional expense for your company to install special charging stations, as well as no downtime while people gas up their fossil fuel-powered work vehicles. It also means these vehicles can stay plugged in conveniently when theyre not in use, so theyll be charged and ready to use at a moments notice. At a cost of about 88 cents per charge, the cost benefit of electric power will be realized immediately by you and your company.
www.naturespathways.com

The Minute Mizer from Cushman is the perfect example of how electric power can make your company more efficient. Compact in size, the Minute Mizer can easily maneuver in tight spaces in your factory or warehouse. The Minute Mizer is designed to quickly move one or two people, or a driver and cargo, from place to place inside a building or from building to building on your campus. Typical operating costs for it and other industrial electric-powered vehicles are under 3 cents per mile. Vehicles like the Cushman Minute Mizer are also customizable for your specific needs. Extended cargo beds, tool boxes and permanent seats are just a few of the examples of the custom work Cushman has done for customers in the past. Industrial electric-powered vehicles do more than contribute to your companys bottom line. They also contribute to a cleaner, greener company. No exhaust emissions allow for safer operation inside your factory or warehouse. That means a more pleasant work environment for your employees, which can lead to higher productivity. The quiet operation of LSVs also contributes to a more comfortable work atmosphere. Of course, the clean, quiet operation contributes to a cleaner planet and at the same time your work environment is staying greener. The use of industrial electric-powered vehicles in the workplace is nothing new, but the number of choices and the flexibility are. If you and your company havent looked at the use of industrial electric-powered vehicles for your company recently, theres no time like the present. Your employees will appreciate the improvement in their work environment, and youll appreciate the improvement in your bottom line. Thats a win-win if Ive ever seen one. To learn more about the industrial electric-powered vehicles featured in this article, visit www.meelift.com and click on the Cushman, Columbia ParCar or Star EV links. For more information about purchasing your own LSV, e-mail Bob Mair, major account/fleet manager, at bmair@meelift.com.
Bob Mair has been employed with MEE Material Handling since 2006. He moved into the sale of electric low speed vehicles (LSVs) in 2008, and has sold LSVs to residential and commercial customers throughout Wisconsin. He has participated in advanced product training programs with Columbia ParCar and Star EV. Bob has participated in many events throughout Wisconsin to teach the public the benefits of LSVs.

Parsley ...................................
By cheryl hosmer

arsley (Petroselinum) may be best known as a garnish on dinner plates. However, parsley is packed full of nutrition, probably much more nutritive than the food it is lending the color to! Chefs, home cooks and scientists are all discovering parsleys under-appreciated qualities. There are two common varieties: the flat leaf (Italian) and curly leaf. The texture is the main difference between the varieties, but there are also slight flavor differences. The leaf of parsley is most often used in culinary and medicinal formulas, but the root and seed can also be used. Parsley provides the vitamins A, C, the B vitamin folic acid and K. Parsley is a rich source of many minerals. Menthatriene is a volatile oil in parsley that gives it the distinctive flavor. Another oil in parsley, myristicin, is a known cancer fighter and studies have shown it to prevent tumor formation. The beneficial qualities come from these oils and flavonoids in parsley. Parsleys flavonoids give this herb its diuretic, antiinflammatory and antioxidant properties. Rich in chlorophyll, parsley is a handy breath freshener. Parsley supports the bodys detoxification systems, especially by way of the kidneys. For an easy detox tea, put about 1/4 cup of fresh parsley in an infusion basket in a cup and pour hot water over it. Steep for five minutes, add some lemon juice, and sweeten with honey or maple syrup.
Natures Pathways | June 2012

if you have an abundance of parsley from your garden, freeze some for later use. it can be chopped and put in ice cube trays with water.
Gremolata is a relish made from minced parsley, garlic and lemon zest. It is a terrific relish to flavor everything from fish to eggs to pasta and stews. If you have an abundance of parsley from your garden, freeze some for later use. It can be chopped and put in ice cube trays with water. Once frozen store the parsley cubes in freezer bags. These herbal cubes can be popped into a soup or stew in a jiffy! Large amounts of parsley should not be used during pregnancy, during severe kidney inflammation or by nursing mothers, as this herb can dry up breast milk. A phrase that has stuck with me for decades from the original book, Diet for a Small Planet, Frances Moore Lappe stated that people should be eating a portion of parsley and a sprig of meat, instead of the other way around, for a healthy sustainable diet.

Skin care tips for gardeners .................................................................

By caitlin Brotz

heres nothing better for us gardeners than a wonderful day in the sun playing around in the dirt. Whether youre outside growing herbs to spice up your favorite recipes, landscaping or taking on a large vegetable garden this summer, dont forget that your skin needs care, too! Here are some tips to keep you looking and feeling as great as your plants are all naturally.

Protect skin from harmful sun rays

The ideal sunscreen offers the best safety to you and your skin by blocking UV rays that cause sunburn and damage free radicals, while it remains effective for several hours, and both smells and feels pleasant so that you actually WANT to use it in the right amount and frequency. The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a consumer health and safety advocacy group, states that mineral sunscreens provide the best safety profile and are preferred to most commercial chemical sunscreens, which have inferior stability, penetrate the skin and may disrupt the bodys hormone systems. Look for facial lotions, body sprays and lip balms that contain the minerals zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These two ingredients filter out UV-A and UV-B rays and are also naturally waterproof. They are oil-based minerals that work by reflecting the sun before it can hit your skin. While chemical sunscreens penetrate into the top layer of your skin where it neutralizes the harmful rays in your skin, natural sunscreens actually block them. These ingredients are also safe for children and people with sensitive skin. When Im planning long hours outside, I use both an SPF solid lotion and lip balm for on-the-go head-to-toe coverage. Try a light fragrance or flavor that you enjoy and it will make your sunscreen feel more like a treat than a chore.

look for a repellant that contains nepetalactone, the essential oil found in catnip.
Keep those pesky mosquitoes at bay
When working hard out in your lawn or garden, the bugs will undoubtedly find you. Before you reach for a commercial repellant containing DEET (diethyl-meta-toluamide), consider a more natural way to drive them, and their nasty bites, away. Look for a repellant that contains nepetalactone, the essential oil found in catnip. You may be thinking, catnip? Yes, I said catnip. Researchers from Iowa State University have reported that nepetalactone is far more effective than DEET. Entomologist Chris Peterson, Ph.D. of the study at ISU, notes that, Nepetalactone is about 10 times more effective than DEET. Most commercial insect repellents contain about 5 to 25 percent DEET. Presumably, much less catnip oil would be needed to achieve the same repellency as a DEET-based repellent. For my outdoor enthusiast customers, I recommend a special blend of nepetalactone, catnip oil, peppermint, tea tree oil,

how growing Power keeps growing

it takes a village to grow good food ................................................................
By Will Allen

he American architect and urban planner, Daniel Burnham, once said, Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir mens blood. At Growing Power we have embraced this philosophy wholeheartedly. In the past five years alone, with the hard work of our dedicated staff, and valuable volunteers and community partners, we have been able to increase our local food production by 5,000%! Our growth is a true testament of our ability to respond to the demand for fresh, affordable and locally grown food that is free of chemicals and pesticides, and is grown in a way that enhances our environment and society as a whole. Through our commitment to increasing local sustainable food production, we are responding to a new wave of consumers, from all walks of life, who want to eat better to live longer, healthier and happier lives. As a matter of fact, weve made it a priority to increase the percentage of locally grown food that is consumed in the metro Milwaukee area from the current level of less than 1% to at least 10%! We cannot do this alone! Like Burnham, Growing Power is making big plans and is working with partners from a cross section of society to be able to transform our local food system to meet the nutritional, environmental and economic needs of our community. Heres a brief overview of our emerging national infrastructure that is supporting such rapid growth. Altogether, Growing Power projects and programs include: A 3-acre urban sustainable farm and community food center in Milwaukee (15 greenhouses, year-round production of food, 100,000+ fish, billions of worms, compost systems, mushroom production, beehives, chickens, goats and training/demonstration areas).

20 farms totaling over 200 acres of hoop house production in Southeastern Wisconsin in urban, rural and metro-Milwaukee communities with annual harvests of over one million pounds of food. A 7-acre Iron Street Urban Farm Community Food Center based in a warehouse in Chicago. An agricultural charter school in partnership with the Center for Resilient Cities in Madison. 15 Regional Outreach Training Centers in partnership with locally based organizations in fourteen states. 2 mixed development projects on Milwaukees North and South Sides fostering healthy food access (King Drive Commons and the Mitchell Street Market Lofts). Dozens of school and community gardens in Milwaukee, Madison and Chicago. Farm stands and market basket deliveries throughout the city of Milwaukee. Twenty years ago I purchased six run-down greenhouses on West Silver Spring Drive. The need for good food in the neighborhood was evident and I saw the potential for the space, but I had no idea just how much our work through Growing Power would stir the blood of our community into action. Now, two decades later, our growth and production is a mirror image of our greater communitys desire and design to improve our food system. Our organizations motto is Together we are Growing Power, and only together will we truly make lasting change. We need everyone at the Good Food Revolution table. Come for a tour or participate in a training session. Buy our food and learn how to grow your own.

After a long day outside, even if you made the effort to block the suns rays and keep bugs away, you may still find your skin in need of some nourishing and moisturizing love. I recommend to both my gardener and non-gardener friends alike to always look for alcoholfree moisturizing products. Alcohol is put into many commercial products to help prolong shelf life, as well as to more quickly evaporate any greasy residue that may be left behind during application. The problem with this is that many of the nourishing benefits of the lotion may evaporate along with it. Here are a couple of my favorite whipped lotions, perfect for summer application:

dining out 101 .......................................................................

By tony Bednarowski

hen watching your weight, dining out can be a challenge! Many of us dine out more than we ever have in the past and there are more restaurants than ever available to us. With all of the different options to choose from, two things seem generally consistent: portions are large and meals are loaded with starches and fat, which are high in calories. However, since there are so many people following diets or healthy lifestyles, restaurants are becoming more accommodating to your health needs than ever before.

TiPS frOM TONy:

Avoid fried and battered foods. Instead, ask for special requests most restaurants are accommodating and will prepare your meal as you like. Ask for grilled, broiled, roasted or steamed meats and vegetables. Requesting a side of steamed vegetables, salad, brown or wild rice instead of French fries or other fried sides can help cut calories and fat while increasing your intake of healthy nutrients!

When ordering salad, order your dressing on the side to limit your fat and calorie intake. However, be careful not to pour all of the dressing provided over your salad, as it is often more than what you would normally get on a salad with the dressing already on it. Depending on how hungry you are, a salad may be enough to satisfy your appetite, but make sure it includes some lean meat or fish for protein!

www.naturespathways.com

When considering soup, go for the healthier, low-fat, broth-based options that are loaded with vegetables such as kidney, black, pinto or garbanzo beans, and whole grains such as barley. Avoid cream-based soups and chowders.

Avoid all the extras, as these calories add up quickly: bread and butter, sweetened drinks, appetizers, side items and desserts. Instead focus on a healthy balance of lean proteins, low-fat carbohydrates and vegetables.

Limit yourself to one alcoholic drink. Alcohol, whether in the form of a cocktail, wine or beer, can weaken you from exercising thoughtful moderation with your food. Plus, it dehydrates you and offers no nutritional benefit. When you go out, order water instead!

Since the body uses alcohol for energy first, followed by carbohydrates, protein and fat; when you drink and eat, the excess calories are often stored as fat. To keep the pounds from piling on, skip higherfat entrees and concentrate on lower-fat items such as fish, pork, poultry or lean cuts of red meat when having wine with dinner. End your meal with refreshing green or herbal tea. Ginger tea can help with digestion and green tea is good for your overall health. Many restaurants now offer a variety of exotic teas, so treat yourself! Some teas are so fruity that theyre a perfect replacement for dessert.
