In his classic article written in 2002, Dungy said, "As we study all-pro dads, we discover that they share four patterns. They spend time with their children; they are compassionate toward their children; and they love and respect their children's mother and they turn to their faith for strength. "A compassionate father is patient with his children. He doesn't expect them to be perfect, and he tries to empathize by putting himself in their shoes. His love is unconditional, and he lets them know it." The importance of the father in the home is shockingly apparent in statistics on juvenile delinquency. In a classic 1990 study of teen criminality, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development found an 'alarmingly high' prevalence of behavioral problems among all children from families without a father present. Bureau of Justice Statistics found that 72 percent of incarcerated juveniles grew up in oneparent homes, mostly deprived of a father. Non-resident fathers remain crucial to child development. Involved non-resident fathers help improve children's grades and promote better social and behavioral skills. Bottom line: Dads are essential for families and society. On June 17, it's time to say:

The American flag takes its place in popular culture
Times have changed for Old Glory. The beautiful flag ceremonies that were once understood by every Brownie scout are rarely performed except at official functions. It was once considered scandalous to wear flags or flag patterns on clothing, but today Old Glory has evolved. It's part of the popular culture now and people wear the stars and stripes on hats, shirts and jackets to celebrate every patriotic holiday. Flag Day, June 14th, offers a chance to display the flag and to learn its traditional ceremonies and history. The Continental Congress established the first flag on June 14, 1777. In 1949, President Truman officially declared June 14 as Flag Day. Today, our flag has: 13 alternate red and white horizontal stripes - representing hardiness and valor 50 white stars - representing our 50 states A blue field - symbolizing vigilance, perseverance and justice

In ceremonial and official settings, our flag is flown only between dawn and dusk and never in inclement weather. If flown at night, as on some high buildings, it should be spotlighted. It is flown vertically, with the stars and blue field at the top and to the viewer's left. It should never be allowed to touch the ground and never be dipped toward any person or object. When it is raised or lowered in a public ceremony, or passes by in a parade or review, we should face the flag and place our right hand over our heart. Even if you don't get a chance to see a flag ceremony this Flag Day, take the time to wave Old Glory in honor of our freedom. Reaffirm our loyalty to our nation, to its beliefs in liberty and justice, and to its unity as one nation, under God, indivisible.
VACATION TIME
Summer camp: Talk it up
When it comes to packing it up for a week at camp, many kids feel reluctant to leave home. You can help: Talk about the great things they can do at camp Avoid any negative comments Introduce them to other campers in advance even if it's just by email so they will feel less like strangers Once they're at camp, visit early so they don't feel abandoned If possible, visit beforehand so the campers can meet their counselors Buy supplies, clothes, and equipment together so kids feel some ownership
June Project
Floor Pillows [think big]:
Youll Need: Measuring tape 2-inch foam Electric knife Scissors Batting Spray adhesive Upholstery fabric Straight pins Sewing machine Self-adhesive Velcro
1. Cut a piece of 2-inch foam 30" x 30" inches with an electric knife. 2. Cut a 64"x31" piece of batting. (The batting is cut larger than the foam to cover all sides of the foam.) Lay the batting on a flat surface and spray the entire top of one side of the batting with adhesive. Place the 2 foam on top and wrap the batting around it. Trim away any excess batting. 3. Cut a 66"x34" section of upholstery fabric to make the cushion cover. The extra length and width of the fabric is to cover the edges and to allow for a 1" seam all the way around the cushion. Fold the fabric in half, face to face. Pin the fabric together around the two sides adjacent to the folded edge, 1" from the edge. Sew a seam along pinned edges, removing pins as you go. 4. Fold each edge of the open side of your fabric back 1" and pin them separately. Iron the seams flat. This opening is where you will insert the foam and where you will place your Velcro strips. Iron the seams open on the two sides you stitched in Step 3, so the edges of your floor cushion are smooth. 5. Stitch a seam along each of the two edges you pinned in Step 4, removing the pins as you go. Attach a strip of self-adhesive Velcro along the length of each of those two edges. 6. Turn the cushion cover inside out. Insert foam into the cushion cover and seal the Velcro edges. ~ Source: http://www.ehow.com/
