The specimen shall be unglazed and shall have as much of the surface freshly fractured as it is practical. Sharp edges or the corners shall be removed. The specimen shall contain no cracks. The parts is then boiled in water for 5h and allowed to cool in the water for 24 h. The wet weight in air and wet weight suspended in water are then measured. The following can then be calculated: The exterior volume, in cm3 The volumes of open pores and impervious portions in cm 3

The apparent porosity The water absorption

)]

The apparent specific gravity The bulk density in g/cm3

Precautions: These test methods are applicable to all refractory shapes except those that chemically react with both water and mineral spirits. Procedure: Sample (5 grams) of the unglazed brick is prepared. Sharp edges and corners are removed of the sample. surface of the brick is cleaned such that no dust remains on the surface. Any surface-connected porosity or cracks are checked. Experimental Method: After the preparation of the sample .it is weighed in the digital weighing balance and reading is noted as the Dry mass of the sample. Sample is placed in a a beaker filled with distilled water . It is boiled for 25 minutes. After impregnation of the test sample, the Suspended mass of the sample in water is then calculated by placing the specimen in a wire loop, halter that is suspended from the bottom of the weighing balance. Then the Saturated mass of the test sample is determined by weighing in air. Liquid that remains on the surface of the sample must be removed with a cotton cloth before weighing.
