Once home to Ingolstadt universitys botanical gardens, this Hortus medicus is attached to the building that from 1736 to 1800 was used as the Old Anatomy and today houses Germanys Museum of the History of Medicine. The design of these 2,000 m2 grounds harmonises well with the baroque facade of the building that was built to resemble an orangery. Creating an al fresco room the gardens are an oasis of tranquility on the heart of the town. Some 250 medicinal plants are arranged according to their ingredients and labelled with their scientic name, their German name and their genus. The plants are selected rstly on the basis of their historic and present day phytotherapeutic importance and secondly on which drug can be extracted from them. The garden served as a scientic show garden imparting medicobotanical information on a wide range of indigenous and Mediterranean medicinal plants.

In the mid 17th century Margrave Christian Ernst established a hunting and animal garden on a wooded hillside a little outside the town, bordered on three sides by the river Maine. In 1736 Margravine Wilhelmine began to implement her plans for the extension and redesigning of the Hermitage. The New Palace, the sun temple, the semi-circular and double-winged, orangery and the large pond with its statues and fountains were all soon constructed. Wilhelmines principal interest focused mainly on the gardens and her love of antiquity encouraged her to adorn them with statues and articial ruins all interconnected by a series of pathways. These, together with the lower grotto, create an unusual garden composition of independent gardens that still hold their magic for todays visitors. As delightful as the palace and gardens already were, it was the addition of the fountains in the lower grotto and the upper pond that really added the nishing touches creating this stunning work of art.

Back in 2009 when Rain hosted a horticultural show, the garden centre company Dehner opened a show garden on a 1.2 hectare plot next to the show ground. The Dehner garden, that showcases the wonders of indigenous animals and plants, contains some 1,800 bushes and trees representing 60 native species. In addition to this, a large biotope area of some 450 square metres was planted with marshland and pond plants. Rather than having live animals, the garden has life-sized bronze gures of every living creature from a beetle to a wild pig. Sounds and chimes accompany the visitor as he tours the garden. Whilst open to visitors who just wish to take a stroll, the garden is also used to teach visitors about environmental protection. The Dehner Green Classroom offers age-appropriate adventure tours led by qualied environment trainers for children from primary schools and nurseries. They are interactive with plenty of fun and games helping children to get to know their environment and the diversity of habitats it contains.

Garden centre company Dehner has developed a show garden in the companys home town in Rain am Lech that is always worth a visit either just to relax and while away a pleasant hour or two or to gather new tips and ideas for your own garden. The gardens combine elements from Asia, the Mediterranean and England creating a unique ensemble. One of the principal attractions is the Japanese garden that showcases large bonsais, ponds, a stepped cascade, boulders and an arched bridge. The rhododendrons that bloom from May onwards are a further popular highlight. Chimes lead out across the water to a wide band of reeds that in turn melds into an English style cottage garden comprising rockeries, rose gardens, dry stone slate or sandstone walls providing space for rock-loving plants. Bird lovers will delight in the exotic peacocks, amingos and doves. Three times a year some 2,000 m2 of ower beds are used to showcase seasonal displays of both common and rare plants.

Health and wellbeing are tangible in so many ways in this spa town park. Under a preservation order since 2010 the park that has facets ranging from English to Mediterranean focuses around the springs of the modern-day spa town of Bad Steben and the municipal spa facilities. The Klenzebau im Kurpark the very rst spa building that dates back to 1837 is today Bad Stebens calling card. Immediately adjacent to that, the historic columned pump room encircled by fountains and a breathtaking display of blooms is a great place to while away a peaceful hour or so. The romantic rose garden provides a welcome fragranced accompaniment to a relaxing stroll whilst the baroque statues are true eye-catchers amongst the owers. (Court garden) Eichsttt

Once reserved exclusively for the Prince Bishops of Eichsttt, today the court garden is enjoyed by everyone. This wonderful example of a baroque garden was established in 1735 adjacent to the Prince Bishops summer residence designed by Gabriel de Gabrieli. Large and rectangular in shape, the garden stretches down to the banks of the river Altmhl and contains three pavilions that are also the work of Gabrieli. This historic garden is noted for its strictly laid out avenues of miniature trees and carefully pruned and partially ornamental low hedges. Following secularization the dukes of Leuchtenberg redesigned the court garden along the lines of an English garden as was popular at the time when the summer residence was converted to the administrative centre for the university, the adjoining parts of the garden were restored to their former baroque glory. Today, with some 180 trees and bushes representing some 70 different species, the garden also functions as an arboretum.

A dream has become reality! Six years of intense work have turned 5,000 m2 of grounds (two sections, one of 3,000 m2 and the other 2,000 m2) into a magnicently laid out Asian style garden. Ideally located on a gentle slope the garden has a pathway running right through it alongside streams and passed ponds. A red, Japanese style bridge overlooks one of the many waterfalls feeding the upper ponds. Narrow pathways wend their ways between wonderfully formed rocks and evergreen hills leading to concealed seating areas that are just perfect for a quiet rest. Two partially covered patios overlook wonderful rhododendrons, ornamental cherry trees, irises and many other Asiatic plants. In the centre of the garden is an authentic looking Japanese tea house with a characteristic pagoda style roof. A visit to the in-house caf is the ideal way to round-off a visit to the Lotus Garden.

Back in 1747 when the gardens were rst established, the spa town of Bad Brckenau covered some 40 hectares. The Prince Abbots of Fuldas Italian court architect Andrea Gallasini designed a strictly symmetrical garden focusing on its central axis that today still runs across some 5 hectares of the gardens linking the royal palace complex to the Sinntal. Over the years the complex has been expanded with the addition of further buildings, particularly during the reign of King Ludwig I who used the spa town as his summer residence on no fewer than 26 occasions. The beauty of this royal park is highlighted further by the contrast between the formality of the gardens and the natural beauty of the adjacent meadows and woodlands. Stunning ower beds, impressive displays of roses and copious trees are all carefully arranged according to traditional designs as are the linearly pruned avenues of horse chestnut trees and arcades. The romantic, fairytale like buildings in the centre of the park are a royal touch that still delights visitors of today.
