Onekama Elementary students get up close view of safety vehicles

ONEKAMA Children are very observant in their surroundings, and they often see police, fire, rescue and big trucks passing through the area, but the one thing dont normally get to do is to look at them up close. Elementary students at Onekama Consolidated Schools were given the opportunity during Safety/Vehicle Day to get an up close and personal look at some of those vehicles and to get an explanation of how they work. What was very educational for the students is it allowed them to hear directly from the people who perform these services and drive these vehicles.

Gardening with kids tgeaches healthy habits
STATEPOINT MEDIA
School may be out for summer, but as a parent, you can ensure there are plenty of opportunities for your children to learn new things throughout the vacation. Start with something fun, practical, and vital to health and wellness. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years. But you can fight this trend with a hands-on lesson in nutrition. Gardening is a great way to bridge the summer learning gap and promote a healthy lifestyle, said Shari Brown, the winner of 2012 Toyota Teacher of the Year Award. Not only will you be improving your familys nutrition by incorporating fresh fruits and vegetables into your meals, youll be exposing your children to a subject they may not learn about in school. Brown, a North Carolina educator, was honored by the National Center for Family Literacy for her work helping families learn together. She plans to use her grant award to create a community garden. Brown is encouraging families everywhere to learn together while gardening. She has several tips to help you learn in the garden: n Involve your children in the process of picking out what type of plants to grow. Then develop fun, nutritional meals together, such as veggie pizza and fruit salad. n Bugs are cool! Get your kids excited and curious about crucial garden critters with library books, Internet sites, your local science center, videos and bug games. The fruits and veggies you harvest will be delicious, but your childs knowledge will be the most important thing you grow in the garden this summer.

LESSON: From Page 1

We brought in people from the community that provide safety, fire, rescue and other services to the children and their families, said former Onekama Schools teacher Pam Lyman, who organized the event. Lyman said they have done presentations like this in the past, but it has been a few years. She approached superintendent Kevin Hughes about doing some volunteer work at the school and he was all for the idea of bringing in the vehicles. We talked about the big truck day and he said to go for it, so we organized one because it is a good learning experience, Lyman said. They see fire trucks on the road, but to get up close is what they really like. All of the presenters allowed students to see the vehicles and touch some of the equipment. Some of the equipment was living and breathing, like Manistee County Sheriffs Department dog Benco who was brought in by Deputy Jason Torrey. Children had the opportunity to do something with Benco that they normally dont get to do. I dont know if they ever get the chance to get that close to the dog, Lyman said. Deputy Torrey showed the kids all the training that they go through and the kids could pet him. Children also were given the opportunity to get up on the Onekama Township Fire Department trucks and try on a helmet. They also were given a detailed description of how it works. Our fire department has a wonderful source of fire equipment for them view, Lyman said. Another very popular stop for the children was at the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians Department of Public Safety, where they were allowed to sit on one of their quad rescue units. The smiles were from ear to ear as the children were able to get the feel of what it was like to sit on those units. Water safety also was a topic of discussion when members of the U.S. Guard Station Manistee had some drills the students could take part in. They had them dividing up into groups, putting on life vests and tossing a life ring for accuracy. Students also received safety instruction on the water from Manistee County Sheriff Department Marine Officer Steve Block. He showed students the boat he uses and told them important tips for staying safe on the water. Others who participated in the event were Rod Exo who brought a Military Deuce M35 A2 vehicle for the children to view, and Team Elmers that had a semi tractor vehicle. It is just a fun day for the kids to get to see these vehicles up close, Lyman said. What it also did was give them a valuable educational experience on how those vehicles and the people who utilize them play an important role in our world.

MAPS to implement pay-forplay activities

District explores additional cost-saving measures
BY JODIE FLETCHER
CITY EDITOR
MANISTEE The impact of the cuts to school funding continue, this time directly affecting the pocketbook of Manistee Area Public Schools families. As a part of the budget for the 2011-12 school year, the district is proposing implementing pay-forplay activities. Superintendent John Chandler outlined this option at Wednesday nights board of education meeting, as well as a number of other cost-saving measures, many of which will impact the schools athletic programs. Pay-for-play activities was the CHANDLER: first he outlined. While the details I dont like still need to be finalized before the this. I dont like most of the board votes on the budget on June things in the 22, Chandler anticipates requiring budget, but it is students pay anywhere from $20 something that to $60 per sport, with a cap for were going to individuals and families over the be recommedcourse of the school year. ning. I dont like this, he said. I dont like most of the things in the budget, but it is something that were going to be recommending. The fees would be graduated based on income, but really based on the free and reduced lunch. Chandler said the district anticipates this

ONEKAMA CONSOLIDATION

City, township or stay the same in Onekama?

Director of local affairs for the Citizens Research Council of Michigan Eric Lupher, right, discusses the possibility of consolidation before a packed house at the Farr Center Wednesday night.

Consolidation could mean changes in services

BY JOHN COUNTS
STAFF WRITER
ONEKAMA Will future motorists driving into Onekama see a sign that reads City of Onekama, Est. 2011? Or will the Village of Onekama, incorporated in 1891, cease to exist as a municipality and be swallowed up by Onekama Township? These are the questions a crowd of more than 80 concerned village and township residents pondered at an informational town hall meeting at the Farr Center Wednesday night. Eric Lupher, director of local affairs for the Citizens Research Council of Michigan, was on hand to present the possibilities of consolidating the village and the township.

The advantages of having one unit of government is that there is a clear line of accountability over who provides what government services. ERIC LUPHER,
DIRECTOR OF LOCAL AFFAIRS, CITIZENS RESEARCH COUNCIL OF MICHIGAN

Similar attempts have been made in Michigan in the past, according to Lupher, only to get shot down when the issue came to the public for a vote, which it would also have to do in Onekama. The issue even garnered attention from the national media. A story about the proposed Onekama consolidation appeared in the Wall Street Journal the same day as the meeting. Regardless of whether voters

choose for Onekama to become a township or a city, the consolidation would save money by eliminating a governmental body. In the case of becoming a city, both the township board and the village council would be eliminated and a city commission would take its place. If the village was absorbed by the township, the village council would disappear.

Revenue board to make 2011 Cycle I grant distribution

BY KEN GRABOWSKI
ASSOCIATE EDITOR
MANISTEE TOWNSHIP A much anticipated meeting of the Manistee County Local Revenue Sharing Board will be taking place on Monday afternoon at 5 p.m. in the Manistee Township Hall, is located at 410 Holden St. The reason anticipation is high for this meeting is it appears the revenue board will have more funds than usual for the 2011 Cycle I distribution on Monday. During the verbal presentation process that was made back in April a total of 24 public safety applications came in for this cycle in the amount of $704,436.28. They also received 15 other lawful local government applications in the amount of $1,029,788.72. The funds that are distributed come to the local revenue sharing board every six months from 2 percent of the electronic gaming at the Little River Casino. It is part of a compact agreement that was made by the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians with the State of Michigan to operate a Class III gaming facility because they do not pay taxes like a normal business. However, the distribution of that money is also designated to certain areas with the first portion being that 12.5 of every cycle being awarded in the form of public safety grants to local units of government. A second stipulation is once a year the revenue board must make the Payment in Lieu of Taxes (P.I.L.T.) payments to the local units of government that would receive the ad valorem taxes from the property where the Little River Casino is located. Those local units of government are the Manistee Area Public Schools, Manistee Township, Manistee County, West Shore Community College and the Manistee Intermediate School District. Those payments are traditionally made in the Cycle II grants later in the year. Manistee County controller/administrator Tom Kaminski, whose office handles the finances for the revenue board, is expected to give a financial report that will tell them they presently have $2,676,204.10 plus some small interest in their account at this time. However, he will point out that $1,009,017 of that is the payment for Cycle II that they have already received and must be taken off that total. A liability insurance premium invoice and
