OH, THOSE NAILS!
"Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of
James, and Joses, and of Juda and Simon?" Mark 6:3 KJV
Jesus, who earlier framed the universes by speaking them
into existence, worked with His hands in Joseph‘s carpenter
shop. Those in the building trades should be humbled by the
fact Jesus chose to be a carpenter busily designing,
measuring, building, and repairing things.

As a master carpenter He had designs in mind and with
hammer and chisel he fashioned useful items. I wonder if any
of those tables and chairs and other things He made exist
today. He made everything well.
He had to be an expert in the varieties of wood and
their grain for each had their own quality. Some of the
lumber appeared useless but was transformed into masterpieces.
He would do the same for men whom the world would call use-
less. One day He would build disciples and each of them would
be unique and with purpose.
I wonder if He ever became impatient as He waited in
that shop until the hour His public ministry began. He can
certainly identify with us when we too must wait.
I wonder if there were times in His work of redemption
He wished for a moment he was back in the solitude of that
little shop? Didn’t Peter go back to fishing for a while?
He was committed to giving His life as a ransom for many
but He dreaded the cross. In John 12 He considered asking
the Father to save Him from the cross and during His agony
in Gethsemane He asked His father three times about a
possible alternative. He knew the price of redemption was
great.
As children, some of us accidentally stepped on nails
and felt their painful puncture but none of us ever had nails
driven into our flesh intentionally by others. I wonder if
He ever took nails and held them in His fingers and thought
ahead to the day He would be nailed to that horrible cross?
But it was love, not nails, which held Him to the cross.
Oh, those nails!
