Hazards and other Effects on the Health i. Direct and Potential Health Effects: 1. Toxicity class: a. WHO Ib, EPA I: Dichlorvos is a compound which inhibits cholinesterase enzyme activity in the nervous tissue. It is of very high toxicity. Contact with skin, inhalation of dust or spray, or swallowing may be fatal. Slightly toxic to fish and birds and toxic to bees. 2. Likely routes of exposure: a. May be absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, through the intact skin, and through inhalation of fine spray mist or dust. 3. Eye contact: a. Highly toxic. Mildly irritating to eyes. 4. Skin contact: a. Highly toxic, due to possible absorption. Mildly irritating to skin. 5. Ingestion: a. Highly toxic by ingestion. See point 4 for symptoms. 6. Inhalation: a. Highly toxic by inhalation, depends on volatility of compound. See point 4 for symptoms. ii. Symptoms of Poisoning: 1. Nausea, headache, tiredness, giddiness, blurred vision and papillary constriction, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, sweating and salivation. Confusion, ataxia, slurred speech, loss of reflexes are some of the central nervous system effects which may lead to misdiagnosis of acute alcoholism. 2. After inhalation of vapours effects appear within minutes: ocular and respiratory effects. These include marked miosis, ocular pain, conjuctival congestion, diminish vision, ciliary apasm and brow ache. With acute systemic absorption: rhinorrhea, hyperemia of upper respiratory tract, tightness in the chest and wheezing respiration. iii. Symptoms of Severe Intoxication: 1. Salivation, involuntary defecation and urination, sweating, lacrimation, penile erection, bradycardia and hypotension. 10 List ordered alphabetically

iv. Other noted Symptoms: 1. Overexposure effects: a. After inhalation of vapours or aerosols effects appear within minutes: ocular and respiratory effects generally appear first. This include marked miosis, ocular pain, conjunctival congestion, diminished vision, ciliary spasm and brow ache. 2. With acute systemic absorption: a. Miosis may not be evident due to sympathetic discharge in response to the hypotension. In addition to rhinorrhea and hyperemia of the upper respiratory tract, respiratory effects consist of tightness in the chest and wheezing respiration, caused by the combination of bronchoconstriction and increased bronchial secretion. 3. Gastrointestinal symptoms occur earliest after ingestion, and include anorexia, nausea and vomiting, abdominal cramps, and diarrhoea. 4.
