Visual Arts Specialist, community + public arts: DETROIT (CPAD) Director, Community Arts Partnerships (CAP)/CPAD 1 year, continuation dependent on continued grant funding

Position Summary: Work with CPAD Community Arts Development Coordinator and Director to implement, support and monitor the visual arts aspects of the community + public arts: DETROIT (CPAD) program, a city-wide initiative to bring high quality community driven public art as a community development tool to targeted Detroit neighborhoods. This Position includes primary responsibility for identifying artists and supporting them in working with communities to develop proposals and implement public visual arts projects. Contract position based on approximately 20 hours per week, more or less, including significant evening and weekend hours. Duties and Responsibilities: Work in coordination with Community Arts Development Coordinator to establish and build on relationships with Detroit visual artists, community organizations, and residents to facilitate developing and implementing public visual arts projects in six Detroit neighborhoods to support meaningful community development and expression. Work with CPAD team to identify and interact with potential public art projects; expand neighborhood awareness about how the arts can benefit quality of life and creatively address over-all neighborhood concerns; Act as Liaison between artists, CPAD team, and neighborhood committees; Support the implementation of community visual arts projects within neighborhoods, including administrative, logistical and fiscal details; Support the promotion of community arts opportunities and projects within neighborhoods and citywide, including related events , meetings, and culminating activities; Support the continued development and implementation of CPAD policy; Assist in maintaining records and documentation for program and projects; Support CPAD evaluation; Attendance at weekly meetings with Community Arts Development Coordinator in the CPAD/CAP office; Attendance at a minimum of six neighborhood Community Art Group meetings each month; Attendance at CPAD events including, but not limited to, project dedications, community celebrations, and special CPAD events; Other duties as required. Qualifications: Minimum bachelors in fine art or related fields; masters degree preferred; Extensive background in community work, with a focus on urban populations and work with diverse groups of people; Strong connection to the Detroit visual arts community, 5 yrs. experience preferred; Self starter with ability to handle multiple projects, meet deadlines and changing priorities; Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including public speaking; Computer skills needed; Microsoft Office Suite, internet-based professional email, internet research skills, preferred some basic Adobe Creative Suite skills; Ability to work with diverse communities and populations; Knowledge of, and experience with, Detroits inner-city neighborhoods, artists, and organizations or comparable urban experience; Reliable automobile, valid Michigan Drivers License and automobile Insurance.
