Nu Eta Bylaws

Article I: Name The name of this chapter of the Eta Sigma Alpha Homeschool Honor Society shall be known as Nu Eta. Article II: Mission Statement Nu Eta is a student-led honor society focused on leadership, scholarship, and service. Article III: Application Nu Eta membership shall be opened to any 10th- through 12th-grade homeschoolers, regardless of any race, gender, religion, etc., who have met the membership requirements laid down by the faculty advisors. The application process is to be overseen and run by the faculty advisors. The requirements for membership are as follows: Evidence of a test score of 1800 (SAT) or 26 (ACT) or 180 (PSAT) or a 90% on a composite battery on the IOWA, Stanford, California, MAT, or other nationally recognized achievement test. A copy of the test scores sent from the testing agency is acceptable. Evidence of a 3.55 or higher GPA based on a 4.0 scale. The GPA may include early-admission college courses, co-op or support-group homeschool class grades, or work supervised or directed by the homeschooling parent or teacher. An essay written by the applicant of no more than 500 words on an incident in his/her life that speaks to what service, leadership, or education means to him/her. Two letters of recommendation are required. One of the recommenders may be the homeschool parent or guardian. The second should be a teacher or other adult who can speak to the applicants leadership potential, academic achievement, or community service. Article IV: Members Section I: Attendance Attendance of at least 50% of the meetings is required of all members. A final review will be conducted by the officers and the faculty advisors to examine the circumstances of each case.

Section II: Service Requirements Thirty (30) service hours, accumulated over the school year, are required of each member. A log must be kept, and hours must be certified by the person being served. Article V: Officers and Duties Section I: President The president shall run the honor society, coordinate with the faculty advisors, come up with the agenda for the meeting, run the meeting if present, appoint a temporary secretary for the meeting if the official secretary is absent, and arbitrate those disagreements between members that pertain to the honor society. Section II: Vice-President The vice-president shall assist the president in the running of the honor society, coordinate honor-society events, run the meeting if the president is not present, and fill in for the president if the president is unable to discharge his/her duties. Section III: Treasurer The treasurer shall keep track of the money, give a report at each meeting, and run the meeting if the president and vice-president are not present. Section IV: Secretary The secretary shall send out meeting reminders, send out the agenda received from the president (which is to be sent out a week in advance), compile agenda-topic requests from the members, send out the final agenda 48 hours before the meeting, take minutes of all meetings, distribute the minutes to the group within 48 hours, and maintain a roster of all members of the honor society. Section V: Historian The historian shall keep a visual and/or written record of the honor societys events, and otherwise record the story of the honor society. Section VI: Elections The officers are to be elected every year in the fall, with the exception of the president, who is to be elected at the end of the preceding spring. All elections are to be by secret ballot. Article VI: Meetings Section I: Frequency of Meetings Meetings shall be held not more than twice and not less than once per month. An extra meeting may be held at the request of a member and with the approval of the president.

Section II: Quorum The quorum shall be at least 50% of the current members with at least one officer present. Section III: Voting Except as otherwise provided in these bylaws, decisions shall be by vote of a majority of those members present and voting. Each member shall have one vote. If at least one officer is present, but the quorum is not met, motions may still be made. Said motions shall be distributed to the group through the web for a vote after the meeting. A 75% vote is required to add, remove, or change a bylaw. Article VII: Treasury Honor-society funds are to be used only for honor-society expenses. Money raised through a fundraiser is not to be used for social events.
