Usually Pakistani and Chinese leaders and people use six expressions to describe this unique relationship: it is higher than the mountains, deeper than the oceans, sweeter than honey, and stronger than steel. It is also an all-weather and time-tested relationship. The relations between China and Pakistan are as old as the Sino-Indus Valley civilization. In olden times it was

The construction of this highway in itself was the manifestation of a friendship that has stood the rigours of time. When Pakistan accorded formal recognition to China, it was subjected to harsh embargos that severely affected Pakistans economic and military buildup but at the same time these embargos proved to be like a blessing in disguise. This not only opened other avenues for us but also compelled us to acquire our own capabilities to a greater strength.
mainly trade along the silk route that has now been replaced with Karakoram Highway.

History has proven that as neighboring countries with different ideologies, the relationship between China and Pakistan is rock-

solid and timeless, and the most important reason is the solid foundation that holds together China-Pakistan relations.
Second, China and Pakistan have been working together to meet various challenges for many years. China

provided great political and economic assistance to Pakistan during the Cold War and helped it build an independent economic system. Pakistan served as a bridge for the establishment of China-U.S. diplomatic relations and helped break the diplomatic isolation China once suffered.
China has provided aid to Pakistan with no strings attached. Furthermore, it has played an active role in helping Pakistan build roads, ports, energy facilities and other major infrastructure projects in hopes that the country can stand on its own feet someday. Shortly after

the Wenchuan earthquake, Pakistan sent all its tents in reserve to China. The
friendship between the two countries began during adversity and has demonstrated incomparable sincerio. Currently, China and Pakistan regard each other as a diplomatic cornerstone and a major supporter. The 60-year development of China-Pakistan relations shows that such brotherly and neighborly allaround relations are characterized by long-term stability, highly strategic importance and sustainability. China-Pakistan relations can advance in three major aspects in the future. The first is enormous economic and trade cooperation potential. http://www.defence.pk/forums/strategic-geopolitical-issues/110661-future-china-pakistanrelations.html

China has become Pakistan's third largest trade partner, which does not match the scale of the two countries' combined population of 1.5 billion. China will further expand its direct investments in Pakistan, participate in Pakistan's major infrastructure and engineering projects and strive to make land transport links between the two countries more smooth in order to enable the people in the two countries to share the outcomes of economic development.

The second is the bright prospects of regional cooperation between China and Pakistan.

Pakistan is a major country in South Asia and has significant influence in the Islamic world. China will cooperate with Pakistan to promote regional cooperation and jointly preserve regional stability and security in the post-anti-terrorism era. The third is the broad space for international cooperation between Pakistan and China. China and Pakistan have common interests and a broad consensus in major international issues such as U.N. reforms, climate change as well as food and energy security. The

two countries will cooperate to cope with the challenges of economic globalization and advance the world's harmonious and sustainable development.
As all-around partners and good brothers sharing weal and woe, China and Pakistan have jointly undergone a tough and glorious journey. Looking into the future, China and Pakistan will stand together regardless of any change in regional and international situations and work together to shape a bright future for the China-Pakistan friendship. Third, stability has always been highlighted in the bilateral relationship. Despite various severe tests the strategic partnership has sustained mutual understanding, mutual sympathy, mutual trust and mutual support. The

Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and GoodNeighborly Relations between China and Pakistan has given a legal form to the friendship between the two peoples.
At the same time, a number of cooperation mechanisms and frameworks have been established in the fields of politics, economy, diplomacy, defense and culture. The

two countries have signed a free trade agreement and the Free Trade Commission (FTC) will hold regular meetings. There are also the ChinaPakistan Joint Economic Commission and the China-Pakistan Five-Year Development Plan for Cooperation on Trade and the Economy, to promote the fast and steady development of bilateral trade and economic ties.

India has long been perturbed by China's military aid to Pakistan. K. Alan Kronstadt, a specialist in South Asian affairs at the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service, writes (PDF) that observers in India see Chinese support for Pakistan as "a key aspect of Beijing's perceived policy of 'encirclement' or constraint of India as a means of preventing or delaying New Delhi's ability to challenge Beijing's region-wide influence." China and India fought a border war in 1962, and both still claim the other is occupying large portions of their territory. "The 1962 Sino-Indian border conflict was a watershed moment for the region," says John W. Garver, professor of international relations at the Georgia Institute of Technology. "Both China and India incurred heavy costs on their economic development, and both sides shifted their policy over time to become more accommodating to growth."

Pakistan considers China a more reliable ally than the United States, citing years of diplomatic manipulation and neglect on the part of Washington. As this interactive timeline explains, Pakistan and China grew closer in the 1960s as Washington and Islamabad began to part ways over the handling of regional issues. In particular, Pakistan felt betrayed when Washington cut off aid to Islamabad during its 1965 and 1971 wars with India. Pakistan played a pivotal role as an intermediary during the U.S.-China rapprochement in the early 1970s, but Pakistanis are still stung by what they see as U.S. indifference toward their country after using it to funnel aid to the Afghan mujahadeen to fight the Soviets in Afghanistan.
