Reading Supplement for Task I

Supplement 1
Directions: Read the following passage from an ex- SSEAYP
participant carefully and do the activities that follow.
Life on board the Nippon Maru is one big paradox. Although it looks like a daily
routine as scheduled on paper, one can never expect what might happen next. Everyday
participating youths (PYs) have to deal with certain programs such as morning call and
exercise, SG and club activities, (may be discussion too!) followed by the announcement
from the administration while evenings are guarded by the night patrols of the national
leaders.
But each others company could easily break the monotony. Who could forget the
costume exchange at the cultural nights or the noodles and birthday parties? This years
voluntary activities were Karaoke party, and film festival. Who could forget excitement
when spotting a group of dolphins or hearing the ships horn blow when it crossed the
equator? Who could forget all ones newfound friends?
More than the routine, life on board could create friendships among us. Especially, I
am very happy that I have found my own groups of friends on board. Through meeting
them, I realize that the real cultural exchange in SSEAYP happens among the newly created
friendships. I believe that life on board the Nippon Maru is meaningless without them.

Supplement 2
Directions: Read the following passage from an ex- SSEAYP
participant carefully and do the activities that follow.
My foster family lives in a small beautiful village in Malaysia. On the way to their
home, we visited a few of their relatives. We received a tremendously warm welcome. A
lot of aunts and uncles came to our house where we had a good talk during the traditional
tea ceremony served with traditional foods and drinks. We also wore traditional costumes of
Malaysia (dresses with beautiful colours) and enjoyed cultural exchange with the local
youths. The whole village gave us a very warm reception as if we were their honorable
guests.
We went to Malacca the next day. This ancient and charming city reminded me of
my beloved Hanoi. The most touching moment to me during the home stay was the night,
when my foster parents drove a long distance just
to let us enjoy the sparkling lights of Kuala Lumpur at night. I was very thankful for their
kindness.
When it was time to say goodbye, I didnt feel like leaving. This lovely village
became so close to me. All of us cried when we had to return to the ship. Parting in tears but
smiling in faces. I did not say good bye. I just said See you again, Malaysia. because I
know that the sweet memories I had will stay forever in my heart.

Supplement 3
Directions: Read the following passage from an ex- SSEAYP
participant carefully and do the activities that follow.
Since childhood, becoming an ambassador has been one of my most cherished dreams.
Through SSEAYP, I am now as one of the participating youths feel so honoured and
privileged in representing my country as an ambassador of goodwill.
The country program certainly is one of my favorites. I got the opportunity to visit and
see interesting places and the chance to be with people of different races which make me feel
like a real ambassador. Each country prepared such wonderful programs with well-planned
activities. The comfort and joy we felt in each port of call makes it a memorable one. Our
visits in Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and my country, Thailand will surely bring
back unforgettable memories, which I will hold and cherish in my heart forever.
Our visit to Toyama Elementary School in Japan and the love songs and performances
the schoolchildren presented touched us. The interaction with the local youth of Vietnam
paved the way for a rich exchange of ideas. The beauty of Manado in Indonesia and the
local hospitality impressed us. We discovered Malaysias rich culture in welcoming and
taking good cares of visitors as we visited Istana Budaya.

Supplement 4
Directions: Read the following passage from an ex- SSEAYP
participant carefully and do the activities that follow.
All participating youths watched cultural shows from 11 countries including their own
countries. They were very precious moments. These presentations consisted of dances,
songs, narrations and so on. The performers prepared very well, and they entertained us
while we learnt more about each countrys cultures and history.
Before the main shows, each country displayed various materials from their country, for
example, photos, musical instrument and traditional foods. This helped us learn more about
their lifestyle and political system. I was impressed with the performances and came to
respect the people of each country deeply.
When all Japanese participating youths first met in the beginning of July, we were
allocated many roles. During the summer, each group was asked to meet up frequently to
prepare for their presentations. After we got on the Nippon Maru, we had many practice
sessions. Through the presentations, we got to know each other and our own culture better. I
think this is common in each delegation. It was a rare and precious opportunity for all of us.
The presentation for our Japan Night was in historical order, from the past to the present, so
that we could showcase many aspects of Japan. I think cultural presentations are very
important in promoting mutual understanding, not only among all participating youths, but
also in each delegation.
