About 14 million visitors each year recreate in Wisconsins state parks, forests, trails,
and recreation areas. These areas provide a wide variety of outdoor activities including camping, hiking, biking, fishing, skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, backpacking, horseback riding, and boating. In addition to outdoor recreation, Wisconsins park
system protects habitats and watersheds, preserves natural resources, and provides
opportunities to educate current and future generations about the states natural and
cultural resources.
Total Campsites
The state legislature approved the establishment of Wisconsins first state park in 1878,
a 760-square mile park in northern Wisconsin called The State Park. Today, the state
park system encompasses 66 state park and recreation area units, covering more than
60,570 acres. Each unit is maintained by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Division of Parks and Recreation. The Division of Forestry manages Wisconsins
471,329 acres of state forests. In addition to state parks, Wisconsin has four national
parks and two national forests.
