DISCUSSION OF RESULTS

In the experiment, the group investigates on the relationship between the output voltage and the output current of a DC series generator when driven at constant speed. For increasing values of output current (I L) the corresponding values of the output voltage (VL) and the generated voltage (VL) are recorded. Based on the results, when the output current is zero, there is a small voltage generated at the output. This occurrence is due to the residual flux. This residual flux is obtained on the first start of the generator. This causes the small induced emf. Since the generator is operating under no load, the induced emf is reflected at the output. As the output current increases, the generated voltage and the output voltage are also increasing. It is known that in a series generator, the load current, the armature current and the field current are all the same. Increasing the load current would cause an increase in the flux. As the flux increases, the generated voltage as well as the output voltage will also increase. Analyzing the graph, it shows that the generated voltage increases more rapidly compared to VL. The differential voltage between EG and VL is the IA (RA + RS) drop. Basically, it can be said that EG is the summation of VL and IA (RA +RS) drop which proves that EG is higher than VL itself. As mentioned above, the generated and the output voltages increase with the load current. However, beyond a certain value of load current, the generator saturates and the generated voltage does not increase anymore. The output voltage collapses towards zero as the load current increases. The point at which EG and VL do not increase further is the saturation point.
