NSS REPORT

The NSS Group, under Program Officer, Dr. Abraham George is divided into 6 groups with a total strength of 60 students. Initially we took up two main tasks, which were Tree Plantation and Plastic Free Campus. In refernce to Tree plantation we planted 50 sapplings of cashewnuts around the boundary of NCC Camp, planted at places having higher survival chances, where we learned ne skills of using equipments. Coming to No Plastic Campaign, we campaigned against the use of plastics in the campus by carrying out rallies, by poster making and personally interacting with the shopkeepers at Tech. Market. As an initiation, we distributed around 900 paper bags to the shopkeepers and noticed a significant decrement in the use of plastic bags. Presently we are involved in 4 schools and a youth club near IIT Kharagpur .The schools are Mirpur Primary School, managed by Group 1; Takkar Bengali School, managed by Group 3; Bharti Hindi GSF Primary School, managed jointly by Group 4 &5 and Ambedkar Primary School, managed by Group 6. The youth club is managed by Group2. Group 1 under Suraj Kumar manages the Mirpur Primary School at Mirpur near Hijli Railway Station. Their primary activity is to help the students with their coursework. They concentrate on subjects like English, Maths and General Knowledge. They set their targets of what to complete in the class at time they took up the school. The statistics say that they have almost achieved 55% of their target with 50% in General Knowledge, 55% in English and 60% of their target in mathematics. Group 2 under Abhishek Biswas coordinates with the Youth Club in Sonamukhi village. They aimed to remove poverty and empower the youth with basic computer skills so that they need not do inferior jobs. They teach them Microsoft Office Applications like Word, PowerPoint and Excel and other Database Management systems. They mainly help them build good curriculum vitae, and provide them information relating to various jobs available in the market, so that they can get a good job. They also counsel high school students on taking up proper courses to get a good job. Group 3 headed by Midhun Raj takes care of the Takkar Bengali School at Hijli. They concentrate on teaching them Mathematics and English. They have achieved almost 90% of their target of teaching addition and subtraction in Mathematics and almost 70% of their planned English course. They have almost achieved 70% of their plan. Group 4 & 5 headed by Abhishek Ashish and Mohit Goenka respectively look after The Bharti Hindi GSF Primary School at Sonamukhi near Hijli Station. The groups work to help the students in their basic coursework and teaching them elemental things that are useful in day-to-day lives. The group also carries out fun activities with the students. The Teachers at the school also reported that there has been a 25% rise in attendance on Saturdays, the day the NSS Group works at the school. Group 6 takes care of the Ambedkar Primary School, where they mainly help the primary school students with their coursework. They teach them Hindi Poems, English Alphabets and basic mathematics. Overall, the groups have mostly achieved their semester targets and their activities are being well accepted and appreciated by the target groups they cater to.
