SPRINGFIELD
The trucks will roll into town on
Tuesday morning the 21st of August at
around 7:30 am. They will proceed to the
ball felds and begin arrangements to set
up the tents. By 9:00 am the public is in-
vited to witness the raising of the tent by
the Elephants.
As if it has been choreographed, every-
one steps in time and knows exactly what
to do. Before your eyes, a whole magical
world rises up and, in just a couple of short
hours a vacant lot has been transformed
into a wondrous sight of brightly colored
tents, animals from far away lands, and
amazing equipment from which daring
people will fy through the air to delight
and fascinate you.
Take the day and enjoy, with your fam-
ily, the whole Circus experience on Tues-
day August 21st. Set up begins at approxi-
mately 9:00 am with the tent raising with
tours offered free of charge to the public.
All of this is followed by two magical per-
formances at 4:30 pm and 7:30 pm.
Because of an accident, Terry Reeves
has enlisted the assistance of Chris Hall,
temporary Manager of the Truck Stop and
Michelle Leroux, Howard City Store Man-
ager. Chris and Michelle will coordinate
with the licensing and advanced ticket
management of the circus.
Tickets for the two performances will
be available at a savings when purchased

will beneft the Ensley Park Committee in
preparation of establishing a water park
fund.

and excitement at the Circus.

Land Use Coordinator, Croton Township was put in
touch with Mr. Mark Skidmore. Mr. Skidmore is a pro-
fessor of economics at Michigan State University who
is highly respected for his work in municipal fnance.
He is also a published author of numerous books and
articles.
Professor Skidmore offered the project to his
classes and a senior economics major took on the
task. With little data available, the student soon found
herself forging new territory. The report has been
completed and Professor Skidmore will be coming to
Croton Township to present the fndings.
The public is encouraged to attend. The meeting
is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on June 13, at the Croton
Township Fire Station located at 6431 Elm St. in Croton
Township.

FREMONT, MI The 2012 Mud Bowl Mania, mud
volleyball tournament at TrueNorth Community Ser-
vices is Saturday, July 14, but even if you cant join the
tournament, there are still plenty of opportunities to
get in on the fun.
At its core, Mud Bowl Mania is a mud volleyball
tournament, and is designed as a fundraiser for True-
North Community Services. All proceeds will beneft
TrueNorths efforts to combat hunger and homeless-
ness and provide meaningful mentoring opportunities
for local youth.
The co-ed mud volleyball tournament raises the
bulk of the money through registration fees, but there
are other ways for interested parties to get involved
and help this event raise much needed funds.
There is a community breakfast offered the morn-
ing of the event from 7:00 till about 9:00 AM. The
Fremont Lions Club volunteers to prepare and serve
the breakfast, and while there is no fee for the break-
fast, attendees are invited to give a free-will offering to
contribute to the days fundraising.
Even if readers are unable to be there the day of
the event, or are unable, (or unwilling) to take part
in the mud volleyball tournament, there is another
way to get involved. Event organizers are offering
their annual Mud Bowl Mania beneft drawing with a
number of great prizes including a deluxe Weber gas
grill, a processed pig, a 10 Water Crest Kayak with two
guided river trips, and a $500 Wesco gas card provided
by Deur Dairy and Landheer Insurance. Tickets are $2
each, three for $5, or seven for $10, and winners need
not be present at the drawing which takes place at the
end of the tournament on July 14.

The Lakeview Hotel has
come a long way in the past
seven months. Upon my return
from Florida I began hearing the
buzz about the good food being
served at the Hotel. They really
have a good food, large portions
at a fair price.
So my friend and I ventured
in and it was there we met Mat-
thew the cook for the day. Andrea
Rawson owner actually came in
later as she normally covers the
late shift.
Short handed Bruce Car-
son a regular brought us menus
and poured our coffee. Bruce
is a retired teacher with Lakev-
iew Schools and stops in sev-
eral times a day for coffee and a
meal. Very friendly and welcom-
ing he began by telling us about
the menu. Once again we heard
about the large portions while he
made recommendations.
I was especially pleased to
hear that you could order break-
fast anytime. I chose the stuffed
hash browns.
Shortly after we arrived a ta-
ble flled up with local business-
men there to order their lunch.
Not being in any hurry and re-
ally wanting to meet the owner,
and seeing that they were short
handed, we encouraged Mat-
thew to wait on the other table.
When our food arrived my
friend and I both agreed our meal
was well worth the wait. As I bit
into the hash browns the veggies
I crunched burst in my mouth
with the most delightful favor,
what was that? The stuffed hash
browns were a culinary delight.
Ranch dressing was the secret.
Andrea the owners creation.
Matthew the cook that day
is a graduate of MCC Culinary
Arts and Detroits Cordon Bleu
School. With Matthew doing
it all that day service was slow,
but the coffee was great and con-
versation stimulating as,( Bruce
kept the cups full and conversa-
tion going.)
Andrea a real people person
arrived early for her shift and I
was able to get the inside scoop
on The Lakeview Hotel. An-
drea originally from Muskegon
cooked four years at the Eagles
in Stanwood. Two years ago
she invested all she had into
The Lakeview Hotel. This was
her frst experience at business
management. She sank every-
thing into a building with struc-
tural problems, apartments that
needed a complete renovation,
and a bar/restaurant with a bad
reputation. Soon after the build-
ing was actually condemned. The
rumors of The Lakeview Hotels
demize spread rapidly.
Andrea told me, I love to
cook, both my grandmother
and mother were cooks and
they taught me well. I love my
patrons. I am not a quitter and
with all I had invested, I wasnt
about to give up. Weve cleaned
up and continue to make im-
provements. Certainly there is a
lot more to do and things I want
to do. Repairs have been made
and we have brought things up
to code. We are getting good
renters. We are keeping up with
the bills. I just wish people could
get over the past and give us a
chance.
I asked to see the kitchen and
found it spotless. I also used the
bathrooms, although old much
like the building they were clean
and smelled fresh. I wondered if
Andrea would be open to cater-
ing and she said she would.
The Lakeview Hotels kitchen
is open Monday - Thursday 9am
to 9pm, Friday and Saturday
9am to 11pm, Sunday noon to 9.
The Lakeview Hotel offers a
punch card, buy 9 meals and get
the 10th free.
To encourage business the
Hotel hosts a Craft and Vendor
Show periodically. On specifc
Thursdays a Partylite Bingo is
open to the public, an opportu-
nity for fun.
I found Andrea to be very
open to suggestions as to how to
improve and attract business.
Give The Lakeview Hotel a
chance you wont be disappoint-
ed with the food.
Most recently Andrea has
found it necessary to make some
changes in her staff, thus she is
even more short handed. Mat-
thew however is there and he is
a great asset and worker.

CEDAR SPRINGS This week, the
Red Flannel Festival Board of Directors
has authorized its attorney to undertake
all appropriate steps to protect its trade-
marks. After several verbal requests for
the past six months to stop using the
Red Flannel Festival trademarks, the
Festival sent a formal Cease and Desist
letter to the City Council.
The 8-member, all volunteer board
voted unanimously to pursue this as a
last resort, said Festival First Vice Pres-
ident, Nick Andres. We frmly believe,
as the trademarks are the only real asset
of the Festival, it is our fduciary respon-
sibility as offcers of the corporation to
protect the Festival from this infringe-
ment.
The Festival notifed the City Man-
ager in 2008 that the City was using
Festival trademarks. This past year, in
efforts to raise money for a new library,
the City of Cedar Springs began promot-
ing that the library was going to be sell-
ing Red Flannel trademarked license
plates and holders as a fundraiser. In
the past the City and the Red Flannel
Festival worked cooperatively to pro-
mote the festival and the branding of
Red Flannel Town with the City using
the Festivals various state and federally
protected trademarks. The City clearly
expanded its use of the trademarks with
the promotion of its own products, us-
ing the Festivals trademarks. The new
use of the trademarks infringed on the
Festivals trademarks as it was in direct
competition with the sale of souvenirs,
which causes confusion as to the source
of these goods. In addition, this City
Administration has been using several
of the trademarks for various new uses,
such as business cards, a social media
site and benches for the staging area
without Festival Board approval.
The City informed the Festival in De-
cember, 2011, that it would cease the sale
of any license plates and holders until an
agreement could be worked out between
the City and the Festival. The Festival
did not demand that the City cease the
sales the City did so voluntarily in De-
cember 2011 when it discovered that the
Festival owned the federal trademarks
on the Red Flannel logos. The Festival
was open to working out an agreement
with the City and an Ad Hoc Committee
met to discuss options in early 2012.
The proposal to pay for Red Flan-
nel trademarks was frst initiated by the
City Ad Hoc Committee. The City Ad
Hoc Committee (Mayor Charlie Watson,
Mayor Pro Team Christine Fahl and City
Councilor Patricia Capek) initially gave
the Festival an offer that it would pay
$4,000 a year for a license to use the
Red Flannel Trademarks and asked the
Red Flannel Festival to write and submit
an agreement, which it submitted.
The Festival was, and remains, inter-
ested in resolving the trademark issue in
a way that would be mutually agreeable
to both the Festival and the City. Howev-
er, after six months of several meetings,
and no response from the City Ad Hoc
Committee since April 4, there has been
no progress. The Festival believes that
working in cooperation with the City to
promote the Red Flannel Festival, while
in turn supporting the local economy and
businesses, is a win-win for everyone.
Red Flannel Festival sends Cease & Desist letter to city
CEDAR SPRINGS Last
May, the Red Flannel Festival
Board of Directors received a
letter from the Cedar Springs
City Manager, Christine
Burns, that the City was no
longer in a fnancial position
to provide in-kind services
(DPW, Police, Clean up) to
the Red Flannel Festival,
and estimated those costs at
$5,000.
A spreadsheet submitted
to the Festival on May 18,
2011 by Burns listed the costs
as $3,076. A second spread-
sheet submitted to the Festi-
val later in June 2011 showed
costs at $5,224.65. The City
Budget showed $5,600.
An agreement was pro-
posed by the Festival in June
2011 to pay the $5,224.65 in
fees, with a do not exceed
$8,000 amount between
the Festival and the City until
2015.
After the Festival, in No-
vember of 2011, the Red Flan-
nel Festival Board of Directors
received a bill from the City.
The amount was $8,064.30,
or more than 2 times greater
than the original spreadsheet
submitted by the City Man-
ager last May. The $8,000
amount is .11 percent of the
Citys overall budget.
The Festival Board was
extremely concerned last
year that the $5,224.65 in
costs charged to the Festival
threatened the sustainability
of the 73-year old tradition,
said Red Flannel Board Pres-
ident Michele Andres. As a
501(c)3 nonproft corpora-
tion, run by volunteers, and
funded only through dona-
tions, event and souvenir rev-
enue, this drastic increase in
costs from the City at $8,000
threatens the future of the
Festival. It simply wont sur-
vive this doubling of the fee
structure.
The Red Flannel Festival
Board of Directors entered
into that agreement in good
faith that the City provided
accurate, detailed costs. Ap-
parently, that was not the
case. Every set of numbers
has been different. Unfortu-
nately, the agreement seems
to have simply given City Ad-
ministrators a blank check
to charge the Festival up to
$8,000 said Andres.
Last month, the City bud-
get was increased from $6.9
million to $7.4 million. The
Festivals budget, by contrast,
is approximately $90,000, or
1.22 percent of the Citys total
budget.
City charges to festival more than doubles

The TCHS Senior 2012 All-nighter Celebration was a great success, in a grand old Carnival. On Senior Class Night, 100 graduates + several
chaperones were able to have one last evening of fun together, at Spring Hill camp in Evart. The students enjoyed a meal together, followed by a
ride on the Zip line, swimming, rock wall climbing, basketball, cartoonists, music with a DJ, & more, with a hypnotist finale. All of the seniors were
able to earn tickets by playing Carnival games, to enter in drawings to win several nice prizes. Additionally, each graduate was also given a bag of
goodies, as a gift to let them know how proud we are of each one of them for the special young adults theyve become. We would like to thank
everyone who helped to make this wonderful celebration a reality, after many months of fund raising and planning. The event & gifts were made
possible by the following individuals or businesses who helped by donating, or discounting materials to show their support of the TCHS 2012
graduation. Please let them know how much you value their community support of TC 2012 graduates, by frequenting their local businesses
whenever you can, in appreciation for all they do for the TC area community. Thank You Tri County Senior All-Nighter Committee

Patient Testimonies
I am so thankful for the care I have received from Select Care Physical
Therapy. It far exceeds what I have received at other therapy
establishments. Select Care truly seems to care for my well being. My
therapists knowledge also seems to far exceed what I have seen else-
where. I was truly blessed to be in their care. ~ J.S. Howard City
I wanted to say thank you to all of you for your help after my knee surgery.
I also appreciated how friendly everyone was; it was a pleasure to go to
therapy! My knee is doing great, and I will continue to work hard on my
exercise list. Thank you! ~ D.B. Howard City

Cancer Fighters
By Tresa Erickson
You've read the studies, seen the reports and discussed the issue with
your physician. Consuming certain foods can reduce your risk of cancer.
Some of the best-known cancer ghters are cruciferous veggies. Bok
choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliower and other mem-
bers of the cabbage family fall into this group. In addition to contain-
ing valuable vitamins, minerals and ber, cruciferous vegetables contain
phytochemicals and other compounds that can ght off cancer cells and
keep the disease at bay.
Phytochemicals have been proven to ght cancer in many ways. Some
can combat oxidative stress, which can increase the production of oxy-
gen-free radicals and raise the risk of breast, colon, lung, prostate and
other cancers. Some can halt the growth of cancer cells in tumors in the
breasts, cervix, colon, liver, lungs, uterine lining and more. Some can
stop the disease in its tracks, stimulating the production of enzymes to
detoxify the carcinogens before they cause any damage.
Consuming more cruciferous vegetables does not guarantee cancer will
not occur. Further studies are needed to determine just how effective the
vegetables are against the disease. In the meantime, it cannot help to
eat more servings of them weekly. Numerous recipes are available for
dishes including cruciferous vegetables. For the best results, the veg-
etables should be eaten raw or steamed lightly in order to maintain the
phytochemicals.
Don't dismiss the importance of cruciferous vegetables. The next time
you mosey into the kitchen for a snack, consider grabbing a handful of
cauliower or broccoli. It will do your body good in more ways than one.

Are You a Temple or a Party Store?
Many of us have heard the statement that our body is the temple where our soul lives. A few weeks ago Barb was giving
a talk on nutrition. She asked this question of the audience. Is your body a Temple or a Party Store? It struck me that this is
a great analogy for where some of us are and where some of us would like to be. Now, if we add to that the concept of
Body-Mind-Spirit, we can create a great model for how to live.
What would a Physical Temple look like? The body would be strong and muscular. The skin smooth and clear. The eyes
bright and sparkling. Our nose is open and able to smell everything. Our tongue clean and able to experience the full range
of gustatory delights (tastes) {I just love that word, gustatory}. Our hearing is sharp. We would be able to breathe fully and
run with ease. Our bounding heart provides nourishment to all our cells and tissues. Digestion and assimilation of nutrients
are awless. The elimination of wastes through the skin, lungs, kidneys and bowels keeps our body fresh and vibrant. The
hands are exible with excellent ne motor skills. Feet and legs carry us with poise and efciency. Our back is strong and
supportive of all our physical activity. The body is an efcient machine doing everything we desire it to do. Daily exercise
is an enjoyable routine.
What would a Mental Temple look like? The memory is sharp and clear. We can focus or daydream, which ever we
need at the time. We are funny and enjoy a great laugh. Our thoughts are peaceful and comfortable. We see the good in
everyone and every situation. We know that everything happens for a reason and a purpose that serves us in some way,
even if we do not understand it. We hang out with joyful loving people. We use our minds to plan and create great things;
and we wallow in successful outcomes.
Our Spiritual Temple would have a daily spiritual practice. There would a time of prayer, meditation, and contemplation.
Unconditional love for everyone we meet is automatic. Through out the day we take time to marvel at the wonder and
majesty of Gods Creation. We read and study with the innocent open mindedness of a child.
I know that most party stores in our towns are not like this and the owners do provide an important
service for many people. This analogy is not intended to offend any of those great people. But I want
you to picture a dirty, grimy, little store that is lled with many things that we intuitively know are not
healthy for us: alcohol, tobacco, pop, coffee, junk food, pornography, processed food with many
additives and preservative, etc. Outside are some seedy characters selling drugs. The energy of this
place is low and dark.
We all nd ourselves somewhere on the teeter totter between the Temple and the Party Store. As
you move back and forth, day by day, keep the model of the Temple in your mind as your ideal. You
will slowly be attracted to do those things that will bring you closer to that place where your soul
does live in a Temple.

Thank you, Jennifer. It used to be that a 12-year old
with a boaters safety certicate could operate a personal
watercraft, meaning a Sea-Doo, Waverunner, JetSki or
other ride-on-top motorized watercraft. Not any more.
In 2009, late in former governor Granholms tenure,
she signed Ashleigh Isermans Law into effect (Section
324.80207 of Michigans statutes). Ashleigh Isermans
Law immediately placed restrictions on teens. And ef-
fective October of 2011, the 2009 law raised the mini-
mum age for personal watercraft drivers and toughened
the restrictions yet again.
Most 12 through 15 year olds dont live their lives watch-
ing out for others. And theyre not good at paying strict
attention to their surroundings (well, except for video
games), which you must do when operating machinery.
At 12, or at 15, theyre daredevils-waiting-to-drive-fast-
cars, which is why we dont let them drive alone until 16
and only then after months of practice with adults. Per-
sonal watercraft are no different. In the hands of some-
one who is not looking out for other people every second
that theyre moving, they are weapons.
Watercraft owners pay nes. The owner of a personal
watercraft who consents to someone else (of any age!)
driving their watercraft is personally liable for every in-
jury caused by the driver, even if the driver simply fails
to take ordinary care. It is a stiff rule.
He didnt know! And an owner cant avoid the liability
by pleading I didnt tell him he could use my JetSki,
he took it without me knowing! The law is clear and
explicitly presumes that the personal watercraft is being
operated with the knowledge and consent of the owner
if it is driven at the time of the injury by his or her son,
daughter, spouse, father, mother, brother, sister, or other
immediate member of the owners family. It will put
Mom on the hook for Sons failure to follow a rule, even
once. A second stiff rule.
Stiff penalties. What happens? The injured party sues
Son for negligence, and probably Mom, the owner, too.
The insurer of the watercraft covers the payment of dam-
ages, but only up to the Policy Limit. Drivers assets
are up for grabs for the difference. Maybe Moms assets
maybe the family home - are up for grabs if Moms
found liable for allowing her 15 year old Son to drive
without strict supervision. The driver can be arrested for
a crime, do maybe 2 years time in the joint, get ned.
Bad news.
Big violations: distance laws. It is against the law to
drive a personal watercraft within 200 feet from the
shoreline unless youre in a slow-wake zone or are mov-
ing directly away from the shore. So Grandson, no cruis-
ing the beach area looking at the beauties.
It is against the law for the operator of a personal water-
craft and anyone being towed by one, to come within 100
feet of a dock, a raft, or a buoyed or occupied bathing
or swimming area, or a person in the water, or a person
on the water in a personal otation device, or a vessel
moored, anchored, drifting, or sitting in dead water. Ba-
sically, personal watercraft must be steered away from
everything which is not a moving boat! So just use 200
feet walk it off on dry land. Memorize the view your-
self. Have your teens frequently practice judging 200
feet so they dont make waves for sherman and children
at the shore.
No driving til 14. Under Ashleigh Isermans Law, 12
and 13-year-olds are now prohibited from driving a per-
sonal watercraft. No exceptions.
Rules for teens 14 and older. 14 and 15 year-olds can
drive a personal watercraft but only if a parent or guard-
ian or an individual 21 years of age or older, designated
by the parent or guardian, is on the machine with them,
or, if they drive or ride a personal watercraft with some-
one else of age 16-20, a parent or someone age 21 des-
ignated by their parent, must be within 100 feet at all
times. But beware. You cant let your daughter just ride
around the boat here while you are looking on from the
deck, because of the law prohibiting riding within 100
feet of a boat.
Boaters Safety Certicates required. And all personal
watercraft drivers born after December, 1979 (under the
age of 33 and right now) have to have a boating safety
certicate.
Patrols. Water police are patrolling. Before you let any
teen get on any machine, run them through the ringer on
safety, see if they can correctly judge how far away 200
feet is, and teach them to drive slowly whenever boaters,
shermen and swimmers are around. Else youre stick-
ing your neck out, waiting to get collared.

Project-based learning goes green at Sand Lake Elementary
By MELANIE GOULD
GUEST CONTRIBUTOR
Students at Sand Lake Elementary are
using project-based learning experiences
to gain a deeper understanding of con-
cepts, content, and standards in all subject
areas by identifying and providing solu-
tions to environmental challenges within
the community.
Over the past two years, students at
Sand Lake Elementary have been busy
working on solutions to environmental
and ecological issues and concerns that
they have identied as important.
From recycling to creating an outdoor
classroom, to providing ecological mate-
rials for the library and actively learning
about the importance of and threats to spe-
cialized native ecosystems, students under-
stand that making a dierence and solving
problems begins with awareness, a plan,
and action.
It is this commitment to the environ-
ment and the community that has earned
Sand Lake Elementary its Green School
status for a second year.
Using the Project Based Learning in-
structional model, students are taught how
to use inquiry based methods to enhance
their learning. Problem based learning
teaches students how to thinknot what
to thinkand encourages problem solv-
ing, critical thinking, collaboration, and
action through active and authentic learn-
ing experiences.
PBL requires students to present their
work to audiences beyond the classroom
and has been demonstrated to motivate
and empower students who struggle in tra-
ditional classroom settings where learning
can be more passive and less authentic.
An exciting project currently underway
is the maintenance and improvement of
the native wildower garden at the Sand
Lake Library. Students have just completed
a handicapped accessible pathway through
the garden and will work to provide plant
and animal identication resources and
continued maintenance throughout the
summer months.
For more information about PBL, our
Green School Clubs programs and mis-
sion, or how you can help, please contact
Melanie Gould or Michele VanderVelde at
(616) 636-5669 or via email at: mgould@
tricountyschools.com or mvandervelde@
tricountyschools.com. Hands-on: Sand Lake elementary students are making improvements to the Sand Lake Library.

ingly since purchased new. Only one owner. Sleeps 2-3

room, desk, dinette, full kitchen with refrigerator, stove, oven,
and many cabinets for storage. Everything works perfectly
and is very clean. Has propane heat with a thermostat, air
conditioner, and electronic panel for checking fresh, gray, and
black water levels. Is approximately 6000-6500lbs when fully
