The course presents elementary analysis of deformable solids subjected to force systems; concepts of stress and strain; one, two and three-dimensional stress-strain relationships for the linear elastic solid; statically determinate and indeterminate axial force, torsion and bending members; stress transformations, pressure vessels, combined loadings; and an introduction to column buckling.

4. PedagogyLearningProcess Civil Engineering courses will be taught using a variety of pedagogical models. These will include theoryled teaching, casemethod education and projectbased/teambased teaching. Teaching based on exposition of theory will be applied to engineering and constructionscience.Learningthefundamentalsinmathandphysics, staticsanddynamics, mechanics of materials, hydrology and surveying, transportation, and concrete and structuralsteeldesigneffectivelywillbeprerequisitestothedevelopmentandapplication ofstructuralengineeringskills. Casemethodteachingwilluserealworldbusinessexperiencesinordertodemonstratethe application of general principles and to apply them to specific problems posed during the courseofinstruction.Thispedagogywillbeusedintheteachingofconstructioncontracts andadministration, safetyandbusinesslaw. Projectbasedandteambasededucationwillbeexperiential;studentswilllearnbydoing, as muchasthey wouldin a naturalsciences laboratory class.Projectbasededucation will also give students an opportunity to learn how to assemble and coordinate necessary information, assertauthorityanddelegateresponsibility.Thisisparticularlyimportantinthe construction industry, in which the essential tasks are the management of people and information. ItwillbecommoninCEDcoursesforallpedagogicalapproachestobeemployed.TheCED facultymemberswillbringtogethertheorybasedinstructionandanintimateunderstanding ofstateoftheartprofessionalpractices. Abu Dhabi will provide a universe of projects of all types that will be readily available to studentstoserveasavirtuallaboratory.Drawingsandspecificationswillbemadeavailable tostudentsforclassroomstudyandbeforevisitingprojectsites.Facultymemberswhoare actively involved in those projects will discuss the many unique and special problems encounteredontheseprojects, aswellaspotentialsolutions.Fieldvisitstoprojectsiteswill beanessentialpartoftheeducationalprocess. 5.
