Definitions
Maximum system voltage (Um)
The max. voltage between phases during normal service.

Residual voltage Discharge voltage (Ures )

This is the peak value of the voltage that appears between the terminals of an arrester during the passage of discharge current through it. Ures depends on both the magnitude and the waveform of the discharge current. Complete V/I curves are shown in Publ. SESWG/A 2227en.

Nominal discharge current (IEC)

The peak value of the lightning current impulse, which is used to classify the arrester.

Lightning classifying current (ANSI/IEEE)

The designated lightning current used to perform the classification tests.

Energy capability

Rated voltage (Ur)

An arrester fulfilling the IEC standard must withstand its rated voltage for 10 s after being preheated to 60 C and subjected to energy injection as defined in the standard. Thus, Ur shall equal at least the 10 s TOV capability of an arrester. Additionally, rated voltage is used as a reference parameter. Note! TOV capability of PEXLIM arresters exceeds the IEC requirements.

Standards do not explicitly define energy capability of an arrester. The only measure specified is the Line Discharge Class in IEC. Often, this may not be enough information to compare different manufacturers and, therefore, ABB presents energy capability also in kJ/kV (Ur ). This is done in 3 different ways: Two impulses as per IEC clause 7.5.5. This is the energy that the arrester is subjected to in the switching surge operating duty test (cl. 7.5.5.) while remaining thermally stable thereafter against the specified TOV and Uc . For PEXLIM Q arresters this value is 7.4 kJ/kV(Ur ) Routine test energy This is the total energy which each individual block is subjected to in our production tests. For PEXLIM Q blocks, this value is not less than 5.6 kJ/kV(Ur). Single-impulse energy This is the max. permissible energy which an arrester may be subjected to in one single impulse of 4 ms duration and remain thermally stable against specified TOV and Uc . For PEXLIM Q arresters this value is 4.5 kJ/kV(Ur). Note! Corresponding values based on U c are obtained by multiplying the above figures by the ratio Ur /Uc .

Continuous operating voltage

It is the max. permissible rms power frequency voltage that may be applied continuously between the arrester terminals. This voltage is defined in different ways (verified by different test procedures) in IEC and ANSI/IEEE. IEC (Uc) IEC gives the manufacturer the freedom to decide Uc. The value is verified in the operating duty test. Any uneven voltage distribution in the arrester shall be accounted for. ANSI/IEEE (MCOV) ANSI/IEEE lists the maximum continuous operating voltage (MCOV) for all arrester ratings used in a table. The value is used in all tests specified by ANSI/IEEE . MCOV is less stringent as regards uneven voltage distribution in an arrester.

Short-circuit capability

Temporary overvoltages (TOV)

Temporary overvoltages, as differentiated from surge overvoltages, are oscillatory power frequency overvoltages of relatively long duration (from a few cycles up to hours). The most common form of TOV occurs on the healthy phases of a system during an earth-fault involving one or more phases. Other sources of TOV are loadrejection, energisation of unloaded lines etc. The TOV capability of PEXLIM Q arresters is indicated with/without prior energy stress. Refer to Publ. SESWG/A 2227en.

This is the ability of an arrester, in the event of an overload due to any reason, to conduct the resulting system short-circuit current without violent shattering which may damage nearby equipment or injure personnel. After such an operation, the arrester must be replaced. The system short-circuit current may be high or low depending on the system impedance and earthing conditions. Hence the short-circuit capability is verified at different current levels. Note! PEXLIM arresters are tested with short-circuit initiated by overvoltage in accordance with proposed amendment 2, IEC 60099-4, which is more stringent for polymer-housed arresters, than present standards.

Design
ABB employs a unique patented design to enclose the ZnO blocks of each electrical unit (often called a module) under pre-compression in a cage formed of glass-fibre reinforced loops. This results in high mechanical strength.
Silicone rubber is directly moulded on to the cage, sealing the active elements completely. Since there is no air inside the module, internal partial discharge is avoided. Gaskets are not required to maintain good sealing. The design also results in excellent shortcircuit capability. Silicone rubber is highly hydrophobic and resistant to UV radiation and has been shown to be the best insulation (compared to both porcelain and other polymers) based on world-wide independent laboratory and field tests. ABB uses special fillers to enhance these properties as well as giving it high pollution resistance, tracking resistance and fire-extinguishing features. Each arrester unit is pre-assembled at our factory and should not be disassembled for any reason. As in the case of porcelain-housed arresters, multi-unit arresters are assembled at site. Classification as per IEC Different levels of pollution are classified in IEC 60815 with minimum creepage distances being specified for each class as under: Pollution level Light (L) Medium (M) Heavy (H) Very Heavy (V) Creepage in mm/kV (Um) 16 20 25 31

External insulation

External insulation withstand strength of an apparatus is the max. value of the voltage (of a given wave shape) that can be applied without external flashover. Surge arresters, whose primary function is to limit overvoltages in other equipment, will obviously be the best protected of all. The voltage across an arrester can never be higher than that given by its protective characteristics. Only the need for an additional safety factor, including correction factor for installation altitude, can justify technically a higher external insulation strength. All PEXLIM surge arresters fully comply with the requirements stated in IEC and ANSI standards for altitudes up to 1 000 m above sea level.

Short-circuit capability

At overload conditions leading to failure of an arrester, the internal pressure is quickly and safely reduced by puncture of housing, thanks to the special open-cage design. Hence, special devices are not required for relief of internal pressure and personnel/equipment safety is excellent. The inherent design of the arresters with silicone polymer housing directly moulded on the active parts, as in PEXLIM arresters, tends to limit the first asymmetrical peak current to less than 2.5 times the symmetrical test current despite the test circuit being adjusted for this value for a short-circuit test. This is specially the case for longer units. The matter is under consideration in IEC to permit a lower asymmetry factor for such cases since in a real failure situation this performance of the polymer-housed arrester would be beneficial.

Field distribution

The module lengths are chosen to ensure low and uniform radial stress on the arrester even under highly polluted conditions. For longer arresters, axial field uniformity is ensured by grading rings.

Mechanical strength

Housing

Creepage distance and pollution performance The creepage distance is the distance measured along the insulators external profile and may be interpreted as a measure of the arrester performance in polluted environments with respect to risk of external flashover. The shed profile comprises alternate long-short sheds in accordance with IEC 60815.
4

Present arrester standards lack suitable definitions and tests regarding the mechanical strength of polymeric arresters. Hence, to guide the user, ABB has introduced the term Max. usable bending moment, defined as under. Max. usable bending moment is the max. bending moment (in Nm) at the base of a surge arrester resulting from the vector sum of all possible forces (e.g. due to line conductor load, the normal wind load and the arrester weight) in the direction perpendicular to the arrester axis. This value should be compared with the maximum continuous bending moment of porcelain arresters (typically 40% of the minimum fracture moment as per DIN standards). Due to its flexible construction, there may be a visible deflection at the line-end of the arrester under maximum loading. Such deflection is limited by our choice of the usable bending moment figure as given in this catalogue which ensures that the electrical and/ or mechanical functions of the arrester are not impaired in any way.

Selection of arrester
Type designation
The type designation gives detailed information of the arrester and its application. See example below. As standard, the arresters are meant for upright vertical erection. For under-hung erection, when desired, the type designation is completed by letter H after system voltage (Um). For other angular erection, please inform us at order.
Internal code For under-hung arresters, letter H to be added here Um

Mounting

The low weight and the high personnel safety permits the arrester to be mounted at any angle provided that maximum usable bending moment is not exceeded. Thus, they are ideal for use in locations where space is limited (e.g. in cubicles, on transformer tanks and breaker poles etc.) and for protection of transmission lines. For inverted mounting and when the angle of installation exceeds 45 under the horizontal plane, we need to be informed at order to ensure a correct design.

Installation and maintenance

PEXLIMQ192-XV245H
Block type Q corresponds to line discharge class 3 Pollution level according to IEC 60815. Neutral-ground arresters have an N here

For non-standard arresters, the type designation will have additional letters. The most important parameters for proper selection are: - The max. system voltage (Um) at the arrester location - Amplitude and duration of TOV; e.g. based on system grounding and short-circuit duration - Energy requirements - Desired margin of protection or LIPL and SIPL - Creepage and/or pollution level Selection is simplified by reference to ABB Selection guide, SESWG/A 2300E and/or by intimating details as per enquiry form SESWG/A 2406E (available at your nearest ABB office) to us.

Arresters are very easy to install and do not need any special tools or instruments. Installation instructions are packed in each case. A properly chosen and installed arrester is practically maintenance-free for its lifetime. If, for any reason however, monitoring of the arrester condition in service is desired, the same is best carried out by a special portable instrument, ABB type LCM, which measures the internal resistive leakage current after filtering all other current components. ABB does not recommend the use of a simple mA-meters (usually built-in in surge counters) as such instrument cannot differentiate between the internal and external leakage current as well as other components and harmonics. Note also that operation of arrester without grading rings, where supplied, may lead to failure and invalidates our guarantees.

Quality control and testing

ABB Switchgear is certified by BVQI to fulfil the requirements of ISO 9001. Type tests
Type (design) tests have been performed in accord-ance both with IEC 60099-4 and proposed amendment 2 as well as ANSI/IEEE C62.11. Test reports are available on request.

Tests on assembled mechanical units

Routine tests on units fulfil the demands of both IEC 60099-4 and ANSI/IEEE C62.11. Each arrester unit has a serial number as per IEC 60099-4 Guaranteed residual voltage The residual voltage at 10 kA, 8/20 s impulse current of each unit is calculated as the sum of the residual voltages for all blocks connected in series in the unit. The residual voltage of the complete arrester is the sum of the residual voltages for its units. Power frequency reference voltage Is measured at reference current (of 2 mA crest resistive) on each unit. Internal corona Is checked on each unit at 0.9 times Ur. A steady internal corona level less than 5 pC is required in a pass/no-pass test. Grading current Is measured at Ucon each unit. Power losses Are measured at Uc on each unit verifying that the thermal performance is in compliance with performed type tests. Test reports Routine test reports are filed and are available on request. The reports include reference voltages, power losses and residual voltages.

Routine tests

Routine tests are performed on ZnO blocks as well as on assembled arrester units and accessories. The most important type tests data is verified on all batches of ZnO blocks, thus verifying catalogue data.

Tests on ZnO blocks

Energy withstand test on all blocks The blocks pass three energy test cycles with cooling in-between. In each cycle the injected energy is far in excess of the single impulse energy capability. Blocks with insufficient energy capability are automatically rejected. Classification of all blocks The blocks are classified at 1 mA (d.c.) and 10 kA (8/20 s) and the residual voltages are printed on each block together with a batch identification. Finally all blocks are visually inspected. Accelerated life tests on samples Power losses after 1000 hours calculated from a test with shorter duration (approx. 300 hours) at an elevated temperature of 115C at 1.05 times Uc shall not exceed the losses at start of the test. Batches in which unapproved blocks appear are rejected. Impulse current tests on samples Blocks are subjected to high current impulses (4/10 s) and long duration current impulses (2 500 s) of amplitudes verifying catalogue data. Other sample tests In addition to the above, low current characteristics, protection characteristics and capacitance are checked on samples.

Tests on accessories

Surge counters, EXCOUNT All counters are routine-tested in a pass/no-pass test before leaving the factory.

Environmental standards

Production and disposal of our surge arresters is environmentally friendly and fulfils the stipulations of ISO 14001. Further information is available on request.
