CAMPUS PAPER

MANAGEMENT

STUDENT PUBLICATIONS DEFINED

Institutions that come out with periodicals and other printed matter funded, managed, and read by the students. It is the students who are primarily responsible for the establishment of the publication. They are our publishers.

Instruments to concretize our democratic rights to free speech, free expression and free press. Venue for the discussion of issues relevant to students. Therefore, journalism is service.

Exist not because of campus journalists and writers, but because of the students. Thus, campus journalists have a responsibility to the readers: the students, the campus newspapers publishers.

How do campus papers go about this?

Campus press freedom is repressed because it runs counter to the interests of school administrations Good publicity is a must for school administration.

With the student publication churning out only the good things the school offers, and hiding the stenchy and defective comfort rooms, defective chairs, unqualified teachers, repressive policies, high fees, the school gets free advertisement paid for by the students.

Did the Campus Journalism Act of 1991 end campus press freedom violations?

Press freedom was a result of militant assertion of the right of the campus press to operate independently from the administration. But, campus publications should not be alone in defending their right to exist, as student journalists dont have monopoly of fighting for student rights and welfare.

Defending campus press freedom is the fight of all students. Student publications consciously defending student rights alone are more exposed to repression. This means that aside from writing and documenting events on campus, student publications must also get involved in the movement for asserting student rights and welfare.

EDITORIAL POLICY
Sets the rules and guidelines for the campus newspapers operations. It includes basic journalism principles such as fairness and balance, and the papers stand on relevant issues. Fairness is not just the presentation of all sides in a story

A campus journalist should always be conscious for whom he / she is writing. To be fair, a journalist must analyze both sides of an issue, and based on this, he / she must choose whose side to play up. A fair journalist has a strong sense of justice.

Balance is not just about giving both sides in your story. It depends on whose side one is looking from. It is about asking what the role of the campus publication is in the campus, community and society as a whole, and for whom the campus newspaper is.

Because the campus publication is published by the students, a campus journalist should view things from the side of the students. Focus on the side of the students on an issue they are least heard, but are most adversely affected.
