TETRA PAK

INTRODUCTION
Tetra Pak is a multinational food packaging and processing company of Swedish origin with head offices in Lund, Sweden and Lausanne, Switzerland. The company offers packaging solutions, filling machines and processing solutions for dairy, beverages, cheese, ice-cream and prepared food, including distribution tools like accumulators, cap applicators, conveyors, crate packers, film wrappers, line controllers and straw applicators. Tetra Pak was founded by Ruben Rausing in 1951 as a subsidiary to kerlund & Rausing and built on an innovation by Erik Wallenberg, the tetrahedron package, from which the company name was derived. Tetra Paks big commercial breakthrough came in the 1960s and 1970s, with the development of the Tetra Brik package and the aseptic packaging technology, which made possible a cold chain supply, substantially facilitating distribution and storage. Tetra Pak operates globally through 40 market companies, which are subsidiaries to Tetra Pak International. The company is global in a literal sense, doing business in over 170 countries. Because of the low relative cost of its end products, the developing world has been an important market for Tetra Pak from the start. In 2010, Tetra Pak reported a 5.2 % increase in sales, with an annual turnover of almost 10bn. In the Tetra Pak annual report 2010/2011, Tetra Pak announced particularly strong growth in China, Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe and Central and South America. Rising income levels on these markets enable higher consumption of protein-rich foodstuffs such as dairy products, and Tetra Pak has announced that it will increase investment in the emerging markets with 10% to over 200m (2009).

Although Tetra Pak Pakistan was inaugurated in 1982, its story can be traced to 1968. Tetra Pak Pakistan was established when Dr. Ruben Rausing, founder of Tetra Pak, realized the potential of packaged milk in Pakistan. Today, Pakistan stands among the top 5 milk producing nations in the world. Tetra Pak Pakistan continues to contribute to the country by providing safe, packaged products, and by investing in education, technical expertise and dairy industry development. Terta pak is currently serving 34 packaging and processing customers in Pakistan (including one in Afghanistan); their larger customers are Nestl, Haleeb Foods, Engro Foods, Popular, Faraz and Shezan.

The product mix of a company, which is generally defined as the total composite of products offered by a particular organization, consists of both product lines and individual products. A product line is a group of products within the product mix that are closely related, either because they function in a similar manner, are sold to the same customer groups, are marketed through the same types of outlets, or fall within given price ranges. A product is a distinct unit within the product line that is distinguishable by size, price, appearance, or some other attribute.

Tetra Brik is a cost-efficient solution with basic functions and features that offer great value to consumers. Tetra Brik is available in five formats (Base, Mid, Slim, Square and Edge) and a wide variety of volumes and shapes. Volumes span from 200 ml. TETRA REX The Tetra Rex gable top carton package comes in four formats (Base and Base Plus, Max, Mid and Slim). Tetra Recart is the first retortable carton package designed for shelf-stable products traditionally filled in cans, glass jars or pouches (foods like vegetables, beans, tomatoes, pet food, soups and sauces). Food is sterilized inside the Tetra Recart package and stays fresh for up to 24 months. Tetra Recart is modern, innovative and renewable. The Tetra Recart carton package is available in volumes from 200 to 500 ml, all with easy tear-off openings.

Straws:High quality drinking straws add value to the package. That's why Tetra pak develops, produce and market its own drinking straws. They offer straight straws, U-shaped straws, telescopic straws and the Sensory straw. The choice of drinking straw depends on the viscosity of the product and the shape and size of the package.

The main product/service tetra pak provide is aseptic packaging. Tetra Pak aseptic processes allow liquid food to retain color, texture, natural taste and nutritional value for up to 12 months, without the need for preservatives or refrigeration. The combination of aseptic processing and packaging reduces waste, makes distribution extremely cost-efficient and converts the product into a consumer-ready format as well as making it possible for the organization to reach consumers in remote locations. Actual Level Tetra paks actual level depends upon their customers. The packaging, features, styling and quality, even the brand name, all depends upon the customer requirement. (Nestle, Engro etc) Augmented level The augmented level of tetra pak includes filling of the products in packs or packaging, technical support, (sealing of packaging), support in processing and equipment. They also offer all installation and start-up services necessary for a smooth transition to safe, efficient production.

Line Stretching Decision: Line stretching in tetra pak depends on the speed of the machines and the shapes that are being produced from them. It also depends on the demand of the customers. They have speedy and advanced machines like TT/3 range, which produce a capacity of 9,000 packages per hour and long continuous production. From 2013, Tetra Paks customers will also benefit from increased production flexibility. The new Tetra Pak A3/CompactFlex iLine, which delivers 9,000 packages per hour, will produce four products on one line the Tetra Brik Aseptic 200 ml Edge with straw or Helicap 23 and the Tetra Brik Aseptic 250 ml Edge with straw or Helicap 23. Line Filling Decisions. Line filling decision in tetra pak depends on the market dynamics and customers' demand. Innovation and technology also plays a very vital role while filling those gaps in their current product range. Tetra Pak recently unveiled four new features for its carton packaging portfolio, aimed at strengthening the environmental attributes of several of its leading products. The features include a separable top for the Tetra Evero Aseptic and three renewable polyethylene (PE) caps made from plant-based sources. Another latest additions to the Tetra Pak portfolio include two new portion packs based on the highly successful Tetra Brik Aseptic Edge design and a tear-off opening for on-the-go convenience to its Tetra Top Carton Shot range. At the end of the year, the company will also extend the Tetra Rex line with a new droplet package design as well as the Tetra Gemina Aseptic range with two new profiles.

When they realize that there are low demands or the parts are not available globally, they decide to delete the product from their product line. For this purpose, tetra pak has recently introduced prisma packaging which is attractive as well as convenient.

NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT Tetra pak has recently developed and introduced a new packaging which is called prisma packaging. They are currently studying the customer response and are getting positive feedback for the packaging.
