Rosetta Stone Chinese Student Workbook

Level 1 Unit 1Introduction

NOTE: Chinese words must be said with the correct tone in order to have the correct meaning. The four tones are:

st

1 tone is flat (m or ma1)

nd
2 tone goes up (m or ma2)

rd

3 tone goes down and then up (m or ma3)

th
4 tone comes down (m or ma4).

The Rosetta Stone program will indicate the tone above the vowel. When you are writing pinyin by hand, you can
use the same notation. When typing pinyin, it is far easier to simply put the tone as a number at the end of the
word. These practice sheets will use this type of notation. Practice saying these tones with your teacher and
remembering which number means which sound.

The Verb To Be
In English, we use the verb to be in many different ways. We can say He is a man and He is running, using the
same verb, to be.
In Chinese, you use two different words. When you want to say that someone is currently doing something (like
He is running.), use zai4 (). When you are simply stating facts (He is a man.), use shi4 ().

Counting Words
In Chinese, it isnt enough to use numbers when you are counting objects. While we would say one dog, two dogs,
etc. in Chinese, you must use an extra word between the number and the noun. This word is called a counting
word, and it changes based on what you are counting. For example, you might say yi zhi gou, for one dog.
Here are the counting words introduced in this lesson, but these are just a handful of the many counting words out
there. If you want to read, write, and speak perfectly, you must memorize them. For our purposes, you can keep
them handy on a cheat sheet while you work. Just memorize the first one, yi ge, and accept that when you are
reading, you may encounter others.
