SLEEP DEPRIVATION, AFFECTS IN CLASS PERFORMANCE Methodology Introduction This section discusses the methodology of the research.

The main purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of sleep deprivation towards student class performance. This study is conducted in Center for Foundation Studies IIUM. Data were collected through questionnaire distribution. Research Instrument This research utilized the quantitative research methodology .The instrument used to collect data was questionnaire only. A set of questionnaire containing 5 questions and different question types is used; 2 open ended and 3 yes-no question (Appendix 1). Respondents of the study The respondents of the study are 30 student of CFS IIUM. In March 2012, a total of 30 questionnaires are distributed. The chosen respondents are 15 male and 15 female students. Research procedure During the actual study, the questionnaires were distributed at various locations in CFS IIUM, such as in the hostel, library entrance and caf. These questionnaires were distributed randomly. Data analysis i. Sleeping periods of CFS IIUM students.

SLEEP DEPRIVATION, AFFECTS IN CLASS PERFORMANCE Figure one shows the result of sleeping period of 30 participants of CFS IIUM students in both gender. 5 to 8 hours is the range of sleeping period of these students. Figure 1:

Referring on figure 3, the graph shows the effect of sleep deprivation in 30 participants of students in CFS IIUM. The effects of sleep deprivation experienced by these 30 participants were lack of concentration, feel sleepy or both of these effect. In 15 male participants, the mode of the effect sleep deprivation is lack of concentration while female students are lack of concentration and both. iv. 100% percent of 30 participants of male and female students have agreed that suffering sleep deprivation will affect their class performance like not focusing on the lectures or not involve in class activity. v. 100% both genders in 30 participants have agreed that enough sleep is one of the important factors that influence in their class performance.

SLEEP DEPRIVATION, AFFECTS IN CLASS PERFORMANCE

Discussion The finding shows that most of the students in CFS IIUM were suffering sleep deprivation based on the results in figure 1. Sleep deprivation, or short sleep, is sleep time less that the average basal level of 7-8 h per night for adults (Colten & Altevogt, 2006) and about 9 h per night for adolescents (Carskadon, Acebo, & Jenni, 2004).Based on the figure 1, 46.7% of male participants and 53.3% of female participants are having not enough sleep that is 7-8 hours per night for adult. Secondly, based on figure 2, findings show that almost male participant and all 15 female participants think that sleeping is important in their daily lives but still 46.7% and 53.3% of them are not having enough sleep. The reasons for their having not enough sleep might be stay up late during the night, finishing the assignments, tutorials and poor in their time arrangement. Thirdly, 100% percent of 30 participants have answered Yes that sleep deprivation affects in their class performance. The effects of sleep deprivation experienced by them are lack of concentration during lectures, feel sleepy and both. In male participants, seems lack of concentration is the highest effect experienced by them that is 46.6%.Lac k of concentration and both are likely be the mode effect of sleep deprivation in female participants that are 40% for each effects. In overall, all participants have agreed that sleep deprivation would bring them negative impact in their class performance. Next, all the 30 participants cannot perform well like focusing on the lectures, involving in class activity if their suffering lack of sleeping period. According to (Friedman et.al, 2003), student who suffering sleep deprivation is more likely to choose simple task rather than complicated task on the next day.

SLEEP DEPRIVATION, AFFECTS IN CLASS PERFORMANCE Lastly, 100% result were achieved that agreed sleep is one of the important factors that influences in their class performance. According to (Durmer & Finges, 2005),the state instability hypothesis posits that variability in neurocognitive performance increases as homeostatic sleep-initiating mechanisms become progressively more deregulated with sleep loss. Thus, the brains capacity to maintain alertness is hindered by the irrepressible activation of sleep processes (p.119).

Conclusion All in all, having enough sleep is a crucial need in a students daily life. Every day, students are fully used their brain in class lectures and high concentration is needed there. As students are suffered from sleep deprivation, their brains are likely not in optimum alertness and might resulting in poor class performance. Hence, it is important for a student in having enough sleep to maintain their alertness and perform well in class. There are several limitations for this study. The findings, among other things may not represent wider population of different genders due to limited number of respondents. However, the number of respondents in this study still provides the insight needed. For a student, not having enough sleep or suffering sleep deprivation, will affects on their performance in class.
