Title: Data collection for ground Truthing of Mkindo water shed Irrigation and soil conservation features.

[Ground Truthing of Mkindo water shed] Introduction /Background Mkindo watershed is located in Hembeti and Sungaji ward, Division in Mvomero district. The watershed has ha potential land for irrigation and rainfed, which is owned and managed separately by ..villages namely Hembeti, Mkindo Wanguu, Mbogo and Komtonga. The Irrigation and soil conservation structures (canals, reservoirs, tanks, wells and man made soil conservation/ infiltration structures) in Mkindo water shed area varies from one area /village to another. Only Mkindo village have constructed and well organized modern Irrigation structures (i.e Canals, intake source, damaged land etc) which was constructed during the period of between 1980 and 1983. Crop production started in 1985, whereby capacity for Irrigation structures was only 42 acres, and also later other farm was established which comes 57 acres in 1989 and now the Mkindo village has about 4000 acres. All other remained villages in Mkindo watershed practice local Irrigation practices by using locally constructed structures. The size of the Irrigation and soil conservation structures varies in size from one village to another in the Mkindo watershed. Objective of the study The primary objective of the study was data collection land and water resources in Mkindo watershed in order to establish and development of formal / informal Irrigation maps. Scope of work Mkindo watershed covers great part of Mvomero district which practices Irrigation agriculture and good producers of Paddy in Morogoro region. The study /survey was limited to only areas where Irrigation and soil conservation are carried out and since areas where by rain fed agriculture also practiced. Therefore the Mkindo Water shed covers Hembeti, Dihombo (Kwadihombo ) Mkindo Kigugu, Mbogo and Komtonga villages in Division in Morogoro district. Activities covered under the study / sum included the following:-

(i) (ii) (iii) (iv) (v) (vi)

Collection of land features data. Collection of water resources features data. Ground truthing of Irrigation structures. Ground truthing of soil conservation structures. Ground truthing of water resources structures. Establish the map for the present Mkindo water shed.

Methodology:The study / survey were conducted by a team of researchers expected by from SUA including Mdeke, Juma. Omari and Kibona, Daniel (Graduate Agric Engineers). The study approach included field visit to Mkindo watershed. Ground truthing Irrigation and soil conservation structures were carried out on Mkindo watershed in order to identify and locate the true and actual present position / location of the structures. In this regard the study /summery team with field guides visited all structures (Irrigation and soil cocervation in the watershed. As earlier stated that the area of study survey covers Hambeti, Dihombo Kigugu Mkindo, and Mbogo and Komtonga villages. During field work date and information necessary was gathering for ground truthing of the Irrigation and soil conservation structures. The study / survey stated by introducing ourselves to village offices and giving information necessary to the office about our study / survey. Then, we requested for the field guide firm the village office to guide us on the while process of data gathering and other related information about Irrigation structures and soil conservation available on that village within the Mkindo watershed. Different field guides were obtained and used effectively from village to village. Also transport system mainly used in areas where possible, otherwise walking was the major part in the field (farms). Other tools used as follows:GPS (Global Positioning system) device. Field Book (Note Books). Field Boots Pen and Pencils
