momentum on offense or defense through the rst three quarters, NU scored twice in the fourth quarter to pull within one score. However,

I
really did not want to edit this graduation is-
sue. its been lingering on my Gmail to-do list
for months now with one of those frowny face
emoticons next to it, perpetually un-checked-
of.
But its not because i knew assembling
this issue would mean yet another marathon
weekend locked away in the third foor of norris
eating Cheetos for dinner and wondering about
the more exciting things my friends were doing.
And its not because it means that we have just
one week left here. Those things are all true,
but none are the reason i was reluctant to get to
work.
its because i knew it would mean saying one
of my hardest goodbyes before i even receive
my diploma or pack up my apartment. i love
this paper and the places it led me and, most of
all, the people i love because of it. The Daily is
the thing that felt the most important to me in
college, and that, in turn, made me feel the most
important. And i know that in saying goodbye,
in sending the issue of to the printers and into
your hands, all of this will start to feel a little bit
small, perhaps even a little bit trivial.
We all have that thing. Maybe it was your
senior thesis, or your boyfriend, or your frat or
your intramural soccer team. The thing about
college is that the people and events most
important to you are all magnifed. its not so
much a college bubble as it is this magical world
where everything the good stuf, the bad stuf,
even the stuf somewhere in between feels
heightened, because thats the point: in college,
the idea was to get an experience.
Theres no other place or time in our lives
where thats such an important task. Later in
life there will be singular and more tangible
goals a mortgage to pay or a promotion to fght
for but right now, and for the past four years,
there were the classes we picked and the friends
we made and the busy we chose primarily to
fgure out some vague concept of who we are or
what we want to become. We had more freedom
to fall in and out of love with more people and
more ideas than i think you will get in the real
world. We were spoiled with opportunity.
When we entered northwestern as eager
freshmen they told us to try it all out: join stu-
dent groups, take weird classes and make friends
anywhere and everywhere we could. And then
we pared back. As our narrative began to take
shape we edited, re-organizing and leaving some
things and people in the margins as we allowed
others to take on more important roles.
What we are left with, the really good stuf,
is what we are saying goodbye to right now. its
pretty hard.
Maybe you are left with a lot of stuf, or
maybe its a little that adds up to a lot. Regard-
less, that is what we are holding on to most
tightly this week and possibly for the next 15
years if you are that guy.
So i hope that somewhere in these pages
weve managed to capture at least the context, if
not the content, of something that was important
to you here. its a tall order, so i make no prom-
ises that weve managed to do that for everyone.
But what i hope most of all is that you felt
such a part of something or someone here that
that you, too, dread saying goodbye but realize
how lucky you are to feel that way. Because
that, i think, is far from small.

According to the Chicago
suburbs most celebrated
fctional teenager, life
moves pretty fast. if you
dont stop and look around
once in a while, you could
miss it. so, to ensure that
no one graduates having
missed anything, lets take
a moment to refect on
some of the most important
campus and city stories
from the Class of 2012s
time.
Dance
Marathon
Breaks
$1-million
mark
After 37 years, Dance Mara-
thon hit (and surpassed) $1 mil-
lion on March 5, 2011. Despite
high winds that caused a two-
hour delay in the festivities, stu-
dents completed the 30-hour
philanthropic dance party to
raise $1,019,130. The primary
benefciary for DM 2011 was
the Childrens Heart Founda-
tion. DM had been approach-
ing the fundraising milestone for several years
but had experienced a rare decrease in year-to-
year total between the 2009 and 2010 events.
Swine fu epidemic infects
campus
The H1N1 virus got to the Chicago area
in late April 2009 and to Northwestern by
early May. At that point, the disease was consid-
ered a phase 5 epidemic and less was known
about its severity. The students who contracted
the illness that spring were sent home to recover,
and the University cancelled its summer program
in Mexico City, which, ironically, focused on pub-
lic health. The following fall, Rogers House was
converted into a quarantine dorm. The lingering
on-campus efect of the pandemic is that students
can now sanitize their hands before ordering cof-
fee at Starbucks in Norris University Center.
Human sexuality class
canceled in wake of sex-toy
demo
In February 2011, Prof. John Michael Bai-
leys 600-person human sexuality class, one of the
most popular at NU, held an optional after-class
lecture on sexual diversity, in which a couple
discussed and then demonstrated exhibitionism
and the female orgasm using a motorized sex toy.
News of the demonstration spread around cam-
pus and then around the national media, prompt-
ing the University to backtrack on their original
position in favor of academic freedom, canceling
the class for the 2011-12 academic year. Human
Sexuality is not on the psychology departments
tentative course schedule for 2012-13.
Blizzard storms
Chicago, treats
students to frst
snow day in 30
years
On Feb. 2, 2011, 20 inches of
snow and high winds caused
the University to cancel classes
for the frst time since 1979.
The iconic image of that snow-
storm became the lineup of cars
brought to a ghostly halt on Lake
Shore Drive as snow quickly
piled up around them. While
students and faculty reveled
in the frst weather-related day
of since I Will Survive was
on the Billboard top-10, NUs
Facilities Management and
food staf were heroic on short
notice. Staf members stayed
on campus or in area hotels to
make sure students had access
to food, and the sidewalks, at
least the ones on campus, were
clear by Thursday.
NU goes global
with opening of
campus in Doha,
Qatar
The Class of 2012 is the frst to
include graduates from NUs
campus in Doha, Qatar. In Au-
gust 2008, 39 students began
classes at NU-Q in outposts of
Medill and the School of Com-
munication. That class size has
been growing over the years. The Qatar cam-
pus is part of Education City, which contains
campuses for specialized university programs,
including Weill Cornell Medical College and
Texas A&Ms engineering program.

heels. When the Class of 2012 was accepted to
NU, it had the highest average SAT scores of any
incoming freshman class, and more than 90 per-
cent were in the top 10 percent of their high-school
classes. Our moment in the sun did not last long.
Each subsequent class has been a little bit smarter
and has competed against a larger applicant pool,
with decreases in acceptance rate. In 2009, NU
added spots for Early Decision applicants but
still wound up deferring students, a practice it
had previously eschewed. Next years incoming
freshmen, the Class of 2016, faced a record-low
15 percent acceptance rate, down 10 percentage
points from the class of 2012. Be thankful you are
graduating from NU today, Class of 2012. If you
were applying right now, your odds would have
been much tougher.
Protess resigns from NU
amid Innocence Project
controversy
Former head of the Medill Innocence Proj-
ect David Protess retired from NU last spring in
the wake of University accusations that he had
doctored emails and withheld documents from
prosecutors who accused the 29-year professor
and his students of ethical misconduct in investi-
gating a murder conviction. Protess and the Me-
dill Innocence Project, together responsible for
helping to free 12 wrongfully convicted men from
prison, came under fre in national newspapers
and left Medill students and faculty starkly di-
vided about who was to blame for the poster-child
program and much-touted professors fall from
grace. Protess has since started an autonomous
innocence project in Chicago, and Medill Dean
John Lavine, with whom Protess had a highly
publicized strained relationship, will retire this
summer. The Medill Innocence Project contin-
ues under new direction and with diferent rules,
but the controversy cast a wide shadow.
City-enforced Brothel Law
ignites the ire of off-campus
students
Evanston has a law on the books saying that
no more than three people who are un-related can
live in a single dwelling unit. The city says the
law will help keep landlords accountable for the
safety of their properties. NU students say they
hold dear the right to save money by, say, sharing
a bedroom with a friend. This has caused tension.
Since the winter of 2011, the city has been threat-
ening to enforce the rule, then backing of for a few
months. As it stands now, the city is concocting a
special licensing system for landlords that will re-
quire them to abide by the three-unrelated rule.
Pop quiz for all graduates who have taken macro:
What will this licensing system do to the amount
of housing available? What will happen to rents?
In a funny twist, the city is now thinking about
combating actual prostitution with another li-
censing system for massage parlors. The Class of
2012 will certainly miss Evanston, but it may also
pay far less for apartments and manicures.
Schapiro becomes president,
survives PR nightmares
After a freshman year under Henry Bi-
enen, our class saw NUs frst regime
change since 1996 with University President
Morton Schapiros inauguration in January
2010. Schapiro had formerly been the president
of Williams College and has brought with him
some of that touchy-feely liberal arts mentality.
He implemented a focus on adding third spac-
es, essentially gathering areas that are open late
and serve food, which took shape in new eateries
like Frans Cafe and The Great Room. By the
time the Class of 2012 has its 10-year reunion,
NU students might actually do crazy things like
smile at one another.
Diversity issues defne
campus dialogue
With its near record-low black-student
enrollment, the Class of 2012 has played
both a symbolic and substantive role in discus-
sions about diversity on campus. Incidents of
cultural and racial insensitivity over the past
four year have come in several forms from
students dressed in blackface to the alleged ra-
cial profling of a black student in Kellogg and
prompted even more campus forums. Tensions
came to a head this spring when an Olympics-
themed of-campus party featured a series of
culturally insensitive costumes. News about
the event spread. Students and several campus
group leaders have demanded greater attention
to the issue from University administrators, even
gaining access to an internal diversity report
commissioned as a part of the Universitys stra-
tegic plan. Though the tenor and direction of the
conversation has been questioned at times, the
search for improvement has proven enduring.

northwestern and
evanston share a zip
code and all the love and
drama that comes with
that sort of proximity.
regardless of whether
you know what an
alderman does, evanston
and its relationship with
nU helped defne where
we lived, how we partied
and the people we
interacted with. here, we
break down the top-six
city stories from the past
four years and how they
impacted nU.
Mayor
Elizabeth
Tisdahl elected,
promising
better town-gown
relations
In spring of 2009, Elizabeth
Tisdahl became the mayor of
Evanston.
During her frst year in of-
fce Tisdahls leadership on
tough issues like budget cuts
and creating more afordable
housing were lauded by al-
dermen and residents.
She also committed to trying to even out a his-
torically rough relationship between the city
and NU. With University President Morton
Schapiro newly inaugurated, the two looked for a
fresh start and collaborative relationship. When
Evanston bid to become a test city for Googles
broadband internet, Northwestern students cre-
ated a video; Tisdahl attended football games,
helped plan a welcome party for Schapiro and
attended ASG meetings.
Of her relationship with Schapiro, Tisdahl told
The Daily in 2009: You aint seen nothing yet.
But 2010 and 2011 proved more trying years
for Tisdahl and her pledge to forge a strong re-
lationship with the University. The controversial
brothel law enforcement and the near closure of
The Keg were far from popular with students.
Schapiro, though, has reiterated that his relation-
ship with Tisdahl is friendly as ever.
Evanston decriminalizes
possession of small amounts
of marijuana
Last November, the Evanston Council de-
criminalized possession of less than 10 grams of
marijuana.
All nine aldermen unanimously voted in favor of
the proposal. Rather than being arrested, those
caught with small amounts of cannabis are in-
stead issued a ticket.
Tisdahl proposed relaxing the punishment be-
cause she wanted to ensure young people were
not restricted from entering the job market be-
cause of such ofenses.
The proposal received widespread support from
city residents, especially Heckys Barebecue
owner Hecky Powell.
I will confess when I was a young man, I
smoked marijuana and I inhaled, Powell said
at a council meeting. But seriously, as far as the
young people are concerned, if we keep putting
these kids in the system then we are really de-
stroying their whole life.
Proposed Tilted Kilt
restaurant tests town-gown
relations
Theres nothing like the prospect of a Celtic-
themed restaurant featuring waitresses in Hooters
inspired costumes to cause a stir in Evanston.
When the chain restaurant and bar applied for
a liquor license in Evanston last spring, vocal
residents opposed the values of the restaurant
and pleaded with Tisdahl, who heads the liquor
board, to deny the restaurant a liquor license.
Some students argued that denying the Tilted
Kilt a liquor license was yet further proof that
Evanston residents were antagonistic toward
NU.
Once again, the Evanston community has tak-
en up the fght against what they see as a rowdy,
immoral and ofensive college environment,
Daily blogger Armen Changelian wrote in a
post about the Tilted Kilt.
The tensions came to a head at a Tilted Kilt
debate where almost 50 resident showed up
to voice their opinion about the establishment.
Many accused the restaurant of demeaning its
female employees.
Actually, I would have much more respect if
they were trying to open a strip club because
that is at least honest and authentic, Damien
Flynn, an Evanston resident said at the meet-
ing.
Tisdahl listened and rejected the restaurants
application for a liquor license just a week
later. After issuing her decision, Tisdahl told
The Daily that seeing the restaurants business
cards, which feature scantily clad women, was
the fnal straw.
LEND brings microfnance to
Evanston businesses
Lending for Evanston and Northwestern
Development was started in February 2010
by a group of NU students to provide non-proft
microlending and business training services for
Evanston business owners.
With help from ASG, faculty and alumni, LEND
established a program of loans and workshops
available to Evanston business owners. Under-
graduate ambassadors worked closely with their
Evanston partners to help them improve their
businesses. It became one of the few local organi-
zations that ofer microloans.
Over the next two years, LEND gave fnan-
cial assistance to four businesses. In May 2012,
LENDs frst-ever loan was repaid in full by Eb-
ony Barbershop.
The Keg closes, then
reopens.
When it comes to the local bar scene, The
Keg of Evanston, 810 Grove St., has long
reigned supreme. So when Evanston Mayor
Elizabeth Tisdahl revoked the cherished water-
ing holes liquor license in January, undergrads
and Kellogg students alike
lamented the end of an era.
In making their decision,
Tisdahl cited the 111 alco-
chol-related citations The
Keg had received since
2005 and the perception
that it was easy for under-
age students to gain admis-
sion to the bar. Tisdahl even
referenced a twitter ac-
count for The Keg that she
said ofers incontrovertible
proof that The Keg, through
its use of social media, ex-
pressly incited, encouraged,
and assisted underage pa-
trons in coming to The Keg
and consuming alcohol.
It was soon discovered that
the infamous Twitter ac-
count was likely run by a
student unafliated with
the bar, and after much de-
bate The Keg reopened on
March 8, citing automatic
stay provisions in the Illinois
Liquor Control Act. But
not before Keg owner Tom
Migon had the opportunity
to share some emotional
reactions to the potential
closing: Im sweating right
now, Migon told The Dai-
ly in January. Its like wak-
ing up with a cancer in my
brain every morning This
is my livelihood, its my job,
its what I do. Im taking it
very seriously.
The drama isnt over yet.
The State Liquor Control Commission has
ordered the Evanston Liquor Board to rehear
charges against The Keg of Evanston and its
fate could be decided this summer.
Off-campus listserv message
about rowdy students goes
viral
In October 2010, Northwestern played an
evening football game at home, conditions that
set the stage for a low point in NU-Evanston re-
lations and turned out to be the frst of a series
of events that would put the University in the
national spotlight.
Over that weekend, the University received
many complaints from Evanston residents about
NU students being rude, urinating and vom-
iting on peoples property, prompting Dean
of Students Burgwell Howard to send a repri-
manding email to over the of-campus listserv.
Though Howard encouraged the recipients to
share his message with their fellow students,
the email soon traveled beyond the NU com-
munity.
It was featured on Gawker and picked up by
other news outlets across the country. Reac-
tion ranged from sympathy for the Evanston
residents and condemnation of the students
actions, to disbelief at overreaction from the
University and residents, and comparisons to
rowdier behavior at other college campuses.
The incidents caused the University to be more
vocal and proactive about facilitating and im-
proving town-gown relations throughout the
rest of the academic year.

Jan. 27, 2009: Satan escapes
from mental hospital, found in
Sargeant bathroom
A man referring to himself as Satan escaped
from an Evanston mental hospital and was
found on Northwesterns campus, University
Police Assistant Chief Dan McAleer said.
UP went to Lisas Cafe after someone report-
ed a man walking around outside the building.
Before authorities arrived, the man, described as
having a tattoo under his left eye and wearing
a black jacket, a black hat and blue jeans, went
to a Sargeant Hall frst-foor mens bathroom.
There, police found him staring and point at
himself in the mirror.
When ofcers asked the man his name, he
responded with absurd answers such as Sa-
tan, McAleer said. Ofcers told him to keep
his hands on the wall. The man repeatedly took
his hands of the wall, after which the ofcers
attempted to arrest him.
The man drew away, and the ofcers brought
him to the ground, told him to stop resisting,
handcufed him and searched his body. They
found a silver box cutter in his pocket.
Though the ofcers found not identifcation
on the man, they discovered a piece of paper
that suggested he was a patient at an Evanston
mental hospital. McAleer declined to name the
hospital.
When the mane was taken back to the sta-
tion, authorities also found a cell phone with a
contact labeled Dad. Ofcers called the num-
ber, and the mans father said his son sufered
from multiple mental illnesses. The father also
confrmed his son was a patient at a mental hos-
pital and had run away on several prior occa-
sions, McAleer said.
Authorities returned the patient to the men-
tal hospital after verifying his fathers state-
ments. According to the hospital, the patient
had been missing since Friday, McAleer said.
The hospital did not know how the patient es-
caped.
It is not clear how the patient was able to en-
ter Sargeant Hall.

Feb. 4, 2009: Student tries
driving with parking boot on,
damages boot and car
A female NU student damaged her friends
car when she tried to drive with a parking boot
attached to the wheel Monday afternoon, police
said.
An NU parking ofcer put the boot on the
white Toyota Camry because it was illegally
parked in the Engelhart Hall parking lot, McA-
leer said. The cars owner had several unpaid
tickets.
The 19-year-old female told police that she
returned to the car at 3:40 p.m. and found a
parking ticket under the windshield wiper and
an immobilization notice on the driver side win-
dow, but she did not see the boot on the left rear
tire
The student attempted to drive the car away
and shattered the left rear hubcap. She also
damaged the parking boot.
The woman contacted the owner of the car
and paid $350 to replace the damaged boot, po-
lice said.
The owner spoke with NU parking ofcials,
but she refused to pay the outstanding park-
ing tickets, police said. According to McAleer,
North Shore Towing Company impounded her
car.

Oct. 27, 2009: Six painted men
streak past Tech, one vomits
Six men ran without any clothes past the
Technological Institute on Friday afternoon, po-
lice said.
Ofcers on patrol saw the six men, fve of
whom were Northwestern students, run onto
Tech Drive around 4:40 p.m. Friday, said Uni-
versity Police Deputy Chief Dan McAleer.
None of them was wearing any clothes. McAleer
said he heard the men were painted head to toe
in purple.
Police stopped the men, who told police a lost
bet led to their streaking.
While police stopped the men, one student
began to vomit, McAleer said.
The student told police he may have contract-
ed the H1N1 virus from a family member.
Student Afairs and Student Health Service
were notifed. All six men were issued Evanston
municipal code violations for indecent exposure.

April 8, 2010: Trespasser takes
computer, leaves ham and
crackers
University Police believe a suspicious person
reported at the Music Administration Building
on Tuesday may also have been involved in a
burglary at a sorority house the same day, au-
thorities said.
UP responded to a suspicious person com-
plaint at 11:40 a.m. on Tuesday from someone
in an ofce on the frst foor the Music Admin-
istration Building, 711 Elgin Road, UP Deputy
Chief Dan McAleer said. According to the
complaint, a male subject opened the door,
saw people inside the room and quickly walked
away. The complainant repeatedly asked the in-
dividual if he needed help, but the man didnt
answer and continued walking downstairs to the
ground level.
Earlier in the day, UP responded to another
suspicious person complaint at Delta Zeta, 717
University Place, McAleer said. After the soror-
ity house cook heard someone ring the doorbell
around 10:30 a.m., he used a remote control to
open a side door, at which point an unknown
male subject entered the house.
The cook said hes been working in the
house for 10 years and did not recognize the sub-
ject, McAleer said.
The cook tried to identify the subject, who
ran upstairs, but he could not locate him, McA-
leer said. The cook then contacted UP, who con-
ducted an unsuccessful search of the house and
surrounding area.
A resident of the sorority house reported at
12:30 p.m. that between 9:15 a.m. and 12:15
p.m., someone entered her unlocked room on the
second foor without her consent when she was
out of the room and removed her Sony VAIO
computer and power cord from her desk. In their
place, the student found a package of ham and
crackers she said does not belong to her.
McAleer said UP are investigating and be-
lieve they have video footage showing the sub-
ject walking south through the sorority quad
around 10 a.m.

stolen by couple after helping
rescue their turtle from street
An Evanston woman believes a couple stole
her wallet after she helped them rescue a turtle
from a roadway, police said.
The woman told police she was walking east
on the 400 block of Greenleaf Street when she
came across a man and woman, both in their
mid-30s, acting frantically over an abandoned
turtle, Evanston Police Department Cmdr. Tom
Guenther said.
The woman said she placed her backpack on
the ground and picked up the turtle to move it
out of the street. The woman said she believes
one of the two people stole her wallet while her
backpack was on the ground, Guenther said.
The wallet contained a drivers license, IDs
and a gift car, Guenther said.

lybeans were in a jar. While she was working,
fve or six boys flled out cards with names and
email addresses. Afterward, one grabbed the jar
of jellybeans of the table and ran away with it,
Guenther said.

parked in the 400 block of Lake Street contacted
EPD when she discovered her Lexus SUV had

sign of forced entry to the vehicle and that police
were probably not going to follow up.

March 2, 2012: Flower pot set
ablaze on Evanston womans
porch
A fower pot on the porch of an Evanston
womans porch in the 1900 block of Emerson
Street was set on fre Wednesday afternoon, Ev-
anston Police Department spokesman Jay Parrott
said.
The 71-year-old homeowner noticed the pot
on fre and extinguished it. Parrott said that fre
department came to make sure the fre was prop-
erly extinguished, and Evanston police fled a re-
port.
It is believed someone set fre to the pot, Par-
rott said. However, he also said at this time there
are no suspects.
In addition, Parrott said how the fre started
remains unknown. Although police think some-
one set fre to the pot, the fre may not have been
started by anyone at all, he said.

10 THE DAILY NORTHWESTERN MONDAY, JUNE 11, 2012 GRADUATION ISSUE
Learning to balance
what matters
Derrick clifton
M
y name is Derrick clifton and im a re-
covering perfectionist.
Have you seen the new MynUre-
sume tool via the undergraduate admis-
sions ofce? its quite cringeworthy.
the rsum genera-
tor tool for prospective students asks
you to select an academic focus and
one of eight typical extracurriculars.
So, i chose communications and
debate. According to MynUre-
sume, i majored in communication
studies with a minor and certifcate,
won the national Debate tourna-
ment, chaired a Model Un com-
mittee, founded Promote360 and
had three writing internships with
big-named arts/theatre companies
and productions.
i dont know about you, but that
sounds a bit exhausting. Yet i look
at my actual rsum and it is some-
what synonymous with the do
and be it all mentality with which
many of us approach our time here
at nU. im not going to bore you
with all i actually did, but lets just
say that seven internships in a little
more than four years is but the tip of
the iceberg.
And when fnals ended for me
last Wednesday, i had the strangest
feeling of all: i had to start teach-
ing myself how to relax.
its not that the overachiever
mindset is inherently negative. i
know im not alone in navigating
college life like the energizer bun-
ny, just going and going and going
nonstop. Honestly, its how many of
us entered the doors of nU in the
frst place.
But that perfectionism is like
the good angel and bad angel we
see sitcom stars interact with when
making a potentially boneheaded
decision.
Sometimes its our better angel.
it inspires self respect and strong ef-
forts. But it can often be a devil, in-
stilling a message that not even your personal best
is good enough.
the truth lies in that space between the shoul-
ders where those sitcom angels typically rest. it lies
with you, your perception and what you ultimately
value in life. its all relative.
Perhaps completing a thesis was the sole bench-
mark for one student, while another wanted to
graduate already a successful entrepreneur with
a dense rsum. And certainly we all have some
vaguely concrete ideas for our personal lives and
careers when we leave. theres someone graduat-
ing that wants to anchor on cnn one day, and an-
other that desires to head up a global health nGo.
But will it have been worth getting to the des-
tination if you just kept your head down, focusing
on putting one foot in front of the other? if constant
business meetings prevent you from noticing the
growth of your children (should you have any)? if
you spent time beating yourself up for every little
mistake you made on a spreadsheet?
itd be a shame to make it, then look back to
regret all the joys you missed along the way be-
cause the destination came before the journey it-
self. thats even after getting what we thought we
wanted or were supposed to want.
At the end of the day, it is all about mastering
the art of balance. Balance between hours at the of-
fce and hours spent gardening. Balance between
having a few drinks too many on occasion and
keeping a healthy exercise regimen. We wont get
it right 100 percent of the time, but we can sure try
our darndest.
northwestern will be a huge learning experi-
ence for many of us. And because were college
students, many folks allow us social graces for mis-
takes that otherwise wont be aforded us in the real
world. Sure enough, the real world, more often
than not, will be crueler than it is kind.
But that doesnt make it impossible for even
the biggest perfectionist to be even kinder to them-
selves.
If it feels trite, just
go with it
Ali elkin
O
ne of the cool things about being a little kid
was that youd learn something completely
by coincidence and it would turn out to be
useful. one day youre fve years old and
youre watching Pocahontas, and then 10
years later youre taking some standardized
test and you have this Slumdog Millionaire mo-
ment and you know the answer is Jamestown.
ive always been a bit preoccupied by these les-
sons, wondering what would have happened had
providence not led me to some essential nugget
of information. i particularly wondered this about
the concept of the clich. What would have hap-
pened had i not been sneaking into my older sisters
english class (our middle and high schools were in
the same building) on the day her teacher berated a
student for saying what doesnt kill you makes you
stronger? How much longer would i have pranced
through life, ignorantly reciting platitudes?
As we march through this week of ceremonies,
we are likely to hear several clichs. Probably no
one will say anything like today is the frst day of
the rest of your life or whip out a copy of oh the
Places Youll Go. in fact, the speaker of the clich
might even capitulate, prefacing the sentiment
with something like it may sound trite, but or
Youve heard it before and ill say it again. i get
it. You cant unapologetically say something weve
all heard before. i mean, what would people think?
How would you ever prove yourself insightful and
wise? its better to own up to ones lack of original-
ity than to be perceived as a phony. that moment
when i learned clichs were frowned upon was
something of an end of innocence. Suddenly i had
to ignore all the comforting truisms that had snuck
into my consciousness through Disney movies and
little House books. or i needed to disguise them
enough to pass for original thinking.
We live in a time that puts a premium on origi-
nality. People used to save much more room in
their brains for information that wasnt their own.
thats how we have the odyssey. now we have
libraries and databases and netfix, so its much
easier for some judgmental undergrad to raise his
eyebrows from behind an enormous cofee mug
and shrug something of as derivative. this is, of
course, ridiculous. everything is derivative. Youre
the variable and your human experience, most of
which you share with the rest of the world, is the
function. Whatever we go out and do will probably
be awesome, but it will defnitely be derivative. no
achievement, no moment of blinding clarity, be it
the plot for a movie or the cure for a disease or the
realization of being in love, comes about without the
help of a lifetimes worth of acquired inspiration.
i dont fnd this disheartening. its liberating.
theres so much more satisfaction to be gained
when you remove the impossible standard of utter
originality, of complete independence. it doesnt
exist. one of the clichs that i hope will be spoken
often throughout this weeks revelry is that we are
here because weve received help along the way,
from our parents, from our teachers and from those
little lessons that crept into our worldviews with-
out our even knowing it. those bits and pieces that
have brought us here, even the clichs, are to be
celebrated.
The waiting game
SAM GUtelle
I
tend to be a very timely person. if
im meeting someone at 5:00, im
usually there at 4:59. if i have an
appointment at a professors of-
fce hours, i prefer to show up fve
minutes early and wait. ive never
understood why invitations will say
a party starts at 10 when it really
starts at 10:30. i tend to believe that
people i know share this insane ob-
session with timekeeping.
Unfortunately, few people do. i
have spent the fours years of my col-
lege life waiting. i have spent it tap-
ping my foot on street corners and
slouching against the walls of de-
serted dorm hallways. i have come
to expect the standard responses of
just give me fve minutes and we
probably dont want to show up too
early, anyways. i shrug my shoul-
ders at these words at check my
watch. tick, tick, tick.
for four years, ive been wait-
ing for a shiny piece of paper, and it
keeps telling me just one more quar-
ter! ill be out soon! nine weeks of
lectures are spent waiting for those
critical details that will allow me to
achieve a passing grade. Sometimes
these nuggets appear as a dull bullet
on a slide, and other times through
a breezy anecdote that makes the
whole class laugh nervously, a will-
this-be-on-the-test sort of chuckle.
the end result is a certifcate thats
most important because it features
the name of the institution where
i waited for my certifcate to come.
How circular.
ive grown to like my waiting
game. Sometimes, when im strand-
ed on that street corner, ill run into
an old acquaintance, and well chat
and catch up and maybe even re-
solve to hang out sometime. thats
the best part of college life: the solidarity of students
who are in formative times of their lives, eager to get
out and meet new people. People achieve this soli-
darity many diferent ways: some through Greek
life, some through study groups and many others
through a stif drink or a potent joint. Mine comes
from the serendipitous street corners.
even the greatest class will occasionally feature
a lull. A smart professor will preface it with a now
for the boring part! A dull one will simply drone
on and on. either way, i know that im in my hap-
py place. its time to wait for the relevant material
to shoot of of a PowerPoint slide, and im always
happy to turn to the person next to me and look for
solidarity in a sideways glance or a snarky G-chat
message.
i will walk at convocation soon. it comes with
a call to action, a request to fnd a job and put my
shiny paper to good use. But as i walk up to receive
my diploma, ill be sure to take a look at the faces in
the crowd, to see if i can steal one last united glance
before my waiting ends.

W
ith the announcement that Bradley
Hamm will become the next dean
of the Medill School of Journalism,
Media, Integrated Marketing Com-
munication, there is a buzz among the
J-Schools sports junkies that Medill
may fnally ofer sports journalism courses in the
near future.
After all, Hamm has a background in sports re-
porting and he established the frst masters degree
program in sports journalism while serving as the
dean of Indiana Universitys journalism school.
Even though the only sports-related course I
took at Northwestern was in the School of Com-
munication, I had ample opportunities to merge
my passions for sports and journalism during the
past four years.
My sports journalism experience at NU has
been so rewarding mainly because of the tremen-
dous student-athletes Ive had the chance to cover,
including two members of my graduating class who
will leave Evanston with some pretty impressive
school records.
The frst time I interviewed Shannon Smith
was actually for the audio story component of
my multimedia fnal project for one of Medills
introductory courses. I decided to profle the fresh-
man class and ask them about the expectations of
joining a program that had won the previous four
NCAA Championships.
I talked to the three Wildcats that went on
to play signifcant minutes as freshmen in NUs
drive for fve Smith, Alex Frank and Lacey
Vigmostad.
After wrapping up the interviews, former NU
associate sports information director Rand Cham-
pion told me to especially keep an eye on Smith
because she was a special talent.
Well, Champion was right. Not only did Smith
help the Cats add three more championship tro-
phies to NUs collection, she won her sports player
of the year award in her junior season.
Then as a senior, she passed the likes of Wild-
cat greats Hilary Bowen and Kristen Kjellman to
become the most prolifc goal scorer in program
history.
In addition to Smith, hopefully, the NU mens
basketball all-time leading scorer will also be pres-
ent at some of my college reunions.
After John Shurna sunk the game winning
three-pointer at home against Ohio State with
3.3 seconds left on February 18, 2009, the lanky,
baby-faced freshman was like a deer in headlights
at the post-game press conference. Never would
I have guessed at the time that four years later
Shurna would fnish his career as the face of NU
basketball.
Shurna never did become much better during
interviews or lead the Cats to the college basket-
balls Promised Land, but he helped make the
past four years of NU hoops arguably the most
exciting in school history.
When I arrived on campus, I was told NU
players dont dunk. John Shurnas high fying
abilities and emphatic throw-downs have certainly
helped changed that reputation. Shurnas six-foot-
eight frame matched with his accurate line-drive
three-point shot made him one of the most versatile
scorers in the Big Ten and the country.
Now that hes no longer an active member of
the Cats, hopefully the basketball gods will look
down more favorably on Shurna and his name will
be called in the second round of the NBA draft
later this month.

Snieders slam sends NU into
Big Ten Tournament
After knocking the Wolverines out of Big Ten
Tournament contention with a walk-of home
run to cap of his freshman year, Paul Snieder put
the Wildcats in the 2010 Big Ten Tournament with
another walk-of, this time a three-run shot to vault
Northwestern past Michigan State.
Cats stun Wolverines in epic
Big Ten Tournament fnale
The result itself wasnt surprising. The Cats
had won 12-straight Big Ten Tournament
titles. But trailing 3-0 against Michigan in the Big
Ten Tournament fnal, Northwestern womens
tennis teams run appeared to have reached its end.
Instead, the Cats launched a comeback, capped
of by Belinda Nius three-set victory over Big Ten
Freshman of the Year Brooke Bolender.
Cats light it up in Lansing,
stun seventh-ranked MSU
This game lives long in my memory, even
if a late-night journalism class kept me
from actually witnessing it. The Cats launched
themselves into national relevance with a stunning
win over the seventh-ranked Spartans. Kevin Coble
scored 31 of NUs 70 points, including several
absurd bank shots to secure the upset. NU would
go on to its frst postseason appearance in 10 years.
Back on top, Cats regain
championship in Stony Brook
Northwestern lacrosse endured its fair share
of humiliation. First, there was the NCAA
Championship loss to Maryland on May 30, 2010.
The next season brought stunning losses to Florida
and unranked Johns Hopkins. In Stony Brook, N.Y.,
however, the Wildcats downed North Carolina in
the 2011 semifnals on a Shannon Smith goal with
18 seconds remaining and then overcame a 4-1 frst-
half defcit to defeat Maryland in the fnal. It was a
magical night in Long Island, as all eight Cats goals
were scored by natives of the island.
Cats pounce on Ricky Stanzi,
upset Hawkeyes at Kinnick
No. 4 Iowa entered Kinnick Stadium with
a 9-0 record. NU was scufing through a rough
Big Ten campaign. But on that afternoon, the
Cats turned their season around on a single play.
With NU trailing 10-0, defensive end Corey
Wootton hammered Ricky Stanzi in the end zone
and Marshall Thomas leapt on the fumble to
draw the Cats within three. NU ultimately won
17-10 and would go on to play in the Outback
Bowl.
NU logs key victory in Lincoln,
downs Nebraska
After sufering the indignity of a fve-game
losing streak earlier in the 2012 season, Pat
Fitzgeralds men pulled of a little bit of regular-
season magic in Lincoln, upsetting No. 9 Nebraska,
28-25. The Wildcats overcame their two greatest
difculties in one fell swoop. Long plagued by a
rush defense that loosely resembled Swiss cheese,
NU held Nebraskas potent rushing attack to just
122 rushing yards. Meanwhile, the Cats, usually
reliant on the friendly skies, scored the game-
winning touchdown on a drive comprising 13
consecutive rushing plays.
After ambiguous start, Cats
excel when it matters most
The NU mens soccer teams 2-1 loss to East-
ern Illinois in its 2011 season opener was
ominous. Its 4-0 loss to DePaul on Sept. 28 was
downright embarrassing. But the Cats fnish was
nothing short of spectacular, as they went nearly
two months without a loss, including a stunning
win in penalty kicks over Indiana in the Big Ten
Tournament semifnals. They followed that with a
comeback win over Penn State to win their frst-ever
conference title.
Who needs an Achilles? Persa
sets NCAA completion record
Shannon Smith won a Tewaaraton Award
as the nations top womens lacrosse player.
John Shurna became Northwesterns leading scorer
in dramatic style. But only Dan Persa stands alone
in the NCAA record books. The Wildcats signal-
caller set a Division I record by completing 72.7
percent of the passes he attempted in his career.
One of the fnest athletes this university has ever
seen, Persa, and his legacy, are almost indelible.

ball to junior attacker Erin Fitzgerald, who took a
shot through several defenders into the left edge of
the net. On the second, Smith lined up for a free-
position opportunity with the Cats trailing by one.
With the entire crowd anticipating a shot attempt
from NUs leading scorer, Smith dished it to fresh-
man attacker Casey Bocklet, who came out from
behind the net and put it away.
She was wide open, Smith said, laughing.
She had the much better shot than me. She was
two steps away from the crease so there was no
doubt in my mind that I was going to pass to her
and I knew the goal was going to go in.
Smith turned in a lethal shot of her own min-
utes later when she stopped and faked multiple
times before ring a submarine shot from 15 yards
out to give the Cats their rst lead of the evening.
After giving NU a 5-4 lead heading into the inter-
mission, Smith expanded the lead 11 minutes into
the second half. The senior attacker came out from
behind the net, and with a defender draped over
her, let a shot rip into the upper edges of the goal to
give the Cats a 6-4 lead.
From then on, NU slowed down its attack, and
Syracuse took advantage with a free-position goal
by Alyssa Murray and an aggressive wraparound
by Michelle Tumolo to knot the score at six. In
contrast to the Cats slow, halting style behind the
net, Tumolo darted behind the net and quickly put
away the wraparound.
But the tie score would be short-lived. Little
more than a minute later, Thornton red home the
eventual game-winner.
I was just pretty poised, Thornton said. Once
we got the ball, the idea was just to clear space and
go to goal and I saw a good opening for my right
hand and just went for it.
Fitzgerald provided a measure of insurance, uti-
lizing a couple of screens to get a clean shot on net.
Her shot was picture-perfect, bouncing just before
the goal line into the lower left corner of the net.
With a two-goal lead and just 5:41 remaining, the
Cats played the possession game to perfection to
seal the victory.
While Sundays result was bitter for the Or-
ange, Gait and multiple players made clear that
they have a lot to be proud of after not even making
the NCAA Tournament in 2011.
It really is impressive and exciting that we got
this far in our season, Murray said. Just moving
forward, were just never forgetting this feeling and
as badly as we all wanted to win today and as badly
as we wanted to win it for our seniors, we have next
year. We have a lot of people coming back and we
have a lot of potential again. We have great recruits
coming in and this isnt the last youll see of us.
For NU, a season scarred by two losses to con-
ference foe Florida has once again been graced
with a golden ending.
Im really proud of the team and how they came
together from a low moment of losing the ALC
Championship to really reevaluating ourselves and
just working and coming together, Amonte Hiller
said. This could not be a more proud moment.
These girls, especially the ones sitting at this table
(to speak with media), really looked inside them-
selves and were the heart and soul of what you saw
this weekend.

BY JONAH ROSENBLUM

STONY BROOK, N.Y. Northwestern tried
slowing the game down once, after scoring four
straight goals to take a 6-4 lead. That tactic didnt
work: Syracuse stormed back to tie the game with
11:08 remaining.
After juniors Taylor Thornton and Erin
Fitzgerald resorted to brute power, ring hard
shots into the back of the net to help the Wildcats
regain the lead, they fell back on an old strategy.
This time, a slow-paced, possession-based oense
worked to perfection, as they defeated the Or-
ange, 8-6, to capture their seventh national cham-
pionship in eight years.
Its a credit to our defense, senior attacker
Shannon Smith said. They play a very high pres-
sure (game) and we face that every day. Theyre
the most aggressive defense that we ever go against
and if we can handle the high pressure from them
chasing us, then that really makes us poised on of-
fense.
NU (21-2) held the ball for the bulk of Sun-
days game. The Cats possessions, which lasted
for minutes at a time, was controversial even
after the nal whistle had blown.
Obviously, Northwestern wanted to make it
a low-scoring game, Syracuse coach Gary Gait
said. What they play for when they decide to
play that style of game is they just need to be up by
one or two and wait out the clock and its not great
for TV, its not great for the growth of our game,
but it is certainly a way to win championships.
NU coach Kelly Amonte Hiller, in contrast,
said that she wouldnt categorize her teams eorts
as waiting out the clock.
Our defense pressures out all year long, all
game long, Amonte Hiller said, and I think
thats the best antidote to when someone tries to
slow the game down a little bit and I wouldnt nec-
essarily categorize it as stalling.
While NUs ability to drain the clock domi-
nated the postgame conversation, it originally
appeared that the Cats would need all the time
they could get after the Orange scored two goals
in the rst 3:20 of the game. Katie Webster led
o the scoring for Syracuse (19-4) with a bounce
shot and Amy Cross converted on a free-position
opportunity to give the Orange an early two-goal
lead. Their advantage could have been greater,
if not for a few dazzling one-on-one saves by se-
nior goalie Brianne LoManto. According to Gait,
however, it wasnt LoManto or the Cats goals that
changed the course of Sundays game.
Thats easy, Gait said. When you go back
to the circle and the draw, it was nine to one in the
rst half of draw controls, right? So you go back
and you got to have the ball to keep that momen-
tum going. The last three quarters of that game,
we didnt touch the ball very often.
Draw controls, which led to the debacle
of NUs ALC Tournament loss to Florida,
were at the core of the Cats success on Sun-
day. Alyssa Leonard led the charge with a
game-high six draw controls. In contrast, no
Syracuse player nished with more than a
single draw control.
I really was upset after the Florida
game. That was what I was most upset about was
the draw control and I just feel like we have a tra-
dition of very strong draws and I felt like I was
failing the team in not giving enough coaching or
inspiring them or whatever, Amonte Hiller said.
Alyssa, she can talk about it, she really, I mean
really took it to heart, and she was on a mission
to get better and do better, and shes so talented
and I mean since that game, she has been unbe-
lievable.
Tightly guarded for the majority of the match,
Smith led the Cats to victory with two goals and
two assists. At rst, she played the role of oor
general, pacing the oense from behind the net
and racking up two assists in the rst half. On
the rst, with NU trailing 3-1, Smith dished the
