To: UP Gears and Pinions Executive Committee I would like to express my intent to be an event head, specifically the Inter-high

school competition head, of the annual Machine Design Series organized by the UP Gears and Pinions. I believe that I have enough experience as an org member to be given the chance to head this event. As event head, my main goal is to unite the members of the organization. I aim to do this by motivating the members at a level that is higher than the pitiful reward-punishment system of motivation. I aim to achieve an ideal environment where the members are motivated to work and participate for the sake of the organization and for simple fun. I am willing to take responsibility and liability if the ideal environment I desire is not materialized. The main course of action I could offer to achieve the said goal is to put my trust in any member assigned to me. I would give tasks that are reasonable and practical. I would also find my way through the psychology of task-giving, I aim to make the person assigned realize the importance of the task given to him/her. I would give tasks with concrete details and steps so that the task is surely achieved. However, I am not limiting the task to the concrete details I lay out, instead I will be open to suggestions as well as violent reactions as long as the criticisms and reactions remain constructive. I believe that with the initial goal of uniting the members of the organization, all clich goals will follow smoothly. If the members are motivated, then the event will surely have a satisfactory number of contestants because invitation-givers are motivated. Also, everyone will be willing to work and would be on time and on schedule, since they enjoy what they are doing, instead of seeing it as a burden. If the motion to motivate fails initially, then I would be obliged to use a more fail-proof method of motivation, that is to give out freebies and prizes to the people who will participate actively. Knowing that I may have limited knowledge on leadership and skills needed to lead efficiently, I acknowledge and accept the fact that I would need to be able to work well with my co-head (if given the chance to be co-head) and might need assistance and guidance from previous heads of the event. If not given the chance to head the event, there will be no hard feelings felt at my end, as I trust and respect the decision of everyone. >:D< To prove that this LOI is not a mere expression of feelings and thoughts, and that I do have serious intentions about heading the event, and to comply with the requirements provided, details about the idea I have for the event are shown below. Of course, this might

not be sufficient and may need polishing and/or rethinking and redesign or probably even total deletion from our memories.

Possible Titles (not necessarily arranged by level of satisfaction) ME and My Roller Coaster Roll ME Up As the title suggests, my idea for the MDS this year is the construction of a paper roller coaster track. A marble will then be subjected to the track and the spectators will watch the marble make its way through the track. To vary difficulty and add competitive aspects, we could opt to require certain obstacles that the track would overcome. These obstacles are in the form of loopity loops, double loopity loops and so on. Time may also be a variable for competition, wherein the marble with the longest running time is considered a winner. I am not sure if this is considered machine design, but hey, inclined planes are considered simple machines. * Disclaimer: This idea is not entirely mine, I found some videos on Youtube as well as some sites that show how to create one. Credentials (only parts of my identity that seem to late most to the position being applied for are included, other credentials are of existence but might not reflect any help to prove worthiness of being event head): 4th Year HS Best Bottle Rocket 4th Year HS Most Accurate Tennis Ball Launcher Grade 6 Lego Robotics Team, member LOI early submitter, 2012
