Wimax Versions
WiMAX implementations can be use in WAN with LOS or in MAN with NLOS to provide a last mile service. 802.16 defines point to multipoint architectures in bands between 1066GHz 802.16REVd includes 802.162001, 802.16 and 802.16c. Defines fixed wireless services like broadband to the home. 802.16e will be the mobile Wimax standard allowing speeds of 120km/hour and defines the handoff process between cells of 6km.

Wimax Evolution

WAN, MAN, LAN and PAN

Wimax Introduction

Analysts expect that 2008 it was around 3.8 million users of wireless broadband connections. WiMAX is a standard based Technology which will serve as a wireless extension or alternative to cable and DSL for broadband access. WiMAx will also support mobile networks that cover a wider area(50Km) than WiFi and with a speed about 70Mbps

Wimax Introduction
WiMAX will be cheaper and easily deployed in sparsely populated areas. Wireless broadband access systems from WiMAX Forum are already deployed in more than 125 countries around the world. Since WiMAX has been developed primarily for the transmission of larger data volumes at high speeds, it provides a supplement to UMTS

Wimax vs WiFi vs UMTS

WiMAX is built purely for data services not for voice. Voice transmission over Wimax can be accomplish in combination with VoIP. UMTS offers voice and multimedia services with a guaranteed QoS even when users are moving at high speed. UMTS is more ideal for applications targeted at internet capable mobile phones over any place of the earth.

Wimax vs WiFi vs UMTS

WiMAX provides complementary wireless internet access via notebook while the user is located in the radio cell. WiFi is suited for public hotspots and for office and residential use. Covering larger areas is not economically feasible. Wimax provides a logical supplement since it provides similar functionalities outside WiFi hotspots.

Wimax, WiFi and UMTS Integration

Wimax Modulation

The WiMax standard support adaptive modulation, balancing different data rates and link quality. WiMAX is able to dynamically shift modulations from 64QAM to QPSK via 16QAM. WiMAX delivers a degradation of QoS depending on the distance of the SS from the BS. The greater the distance, the lower the guarantee of QoS

Wimax OFDM

Wimax OFDM

Wimax -Througput
So throughput declines with distance, for example 12Mbps to 2 miles, 6Mbps to 3 miles, 3Mbps to 4 miles NLOS. WiMAX provides flexibility in spectrum usage by supporting both FDD and TDD as well as OFDM. Currently there are some PreWiMax implementations, we use equipment that implements the Expedience Technology.

Wimax Forum and equipment

WiMAX forum certifies and promotes the development of product and ensures the compatibility and interoperability of Wimax Equipment. First generation of Wimax Equipment outdoors become available in 2005. The second generation indoors installable modem will be available late 2005 or early 2006. Third generation portable modems will be available during 2006 or 2007.

Wimax Conclutions

WiMAX will be integrated and complement With the others wireless technologies. WiMAX will offer faster speeds for Internet conectivity than 3G for residential users. Mobile WiMAX will offer services of voice and data competing for these services with telephone operators. WiMax deployment is cheaper than 3G deployment. The heterogeneous continue conectivity will be managed in medium long term.
