This is heading out a little early this month, but I know everyone is anxious to see pictures from the weekend and those that didnt get to come back to join us are waiting for the report, so here goes . . . What a wonderful time we had during our weekend of June 8th, 9th & 10th. As Ed would say, It was a real hoot! Who would believe that this group has been out of high school for 55 years? We may not look it, but we still act like a group of teenagers (that is, teenagers from the 50s not todays). My favorite saying, growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional. We certainly showed we are definitely NOT ready to grow up! The following pictures will confirm this . . .

The Reunion
So long ago, and far away When we were all so young Tearing through the high school halls We were filled with love and fun. And now comes our reunion Old friends I'll see at last Excitement fills my mind with joy My heart is beating fast. I arrive and I am mystified I see no one that I know Be my friends from long ago? Someone asks my name Then sticks a name tag on my dress She hugs me hard and whispers "It's so good to see you Bess!" I sneak a look at her tag And shocked I am to see This tiny white haired lady Had been such a friend to me! I scan the room looking for A boy that I once knew I'm looking for black curly hair And eyes that sparkled blue. I'm talking, wandering, laughing Reading name tags as I go Searching for that special one That I loved so long ago. At last, I read his name tag And my eyes rise to his face His eyes still blue and sparkling But of hair...there is no trace! But in my eyes I soon discover They look the same as way back then So we'll laugh and dance this night away For we may never meet again. ~ Charlotte Anselmo ~

Tired of the same ole chicken dishes? Try these:
GREEN CHILE FRIED CHICKEN (Prep ahead) 1 8-oz carton sour cream cup milk 4-oz can diced green chile peppers 2 Tbsp. snipped fresh cilantro 2 Tbsp. lime juice 1 clove garlic, minced tsp. ground cumin tsp salt & tsp black pepper 2 to 3 lbs chicken, skinned if desired cup all-purpose flour (more if needed) Cooking oil Bottled hot pepper sauce (optional) Lime wedges for garnish (optional)

In a bowl combine first 9 ingredients (down through salt and pepper). Place chicken pieces in a bag and set in a shallow dish. Pour cream mixture over chicken; seal bag. Refrigerate overnight; turn bag occasionally. Place flour in a shallow dish. Remove chicken from sour cream mixture and discard remaining cream mixture. Roll chicken in the flour to coat. Add oil to a 12 heavy skillet to a depth of to inch. Heat over medium-high heat until hot (350 degrees), Reduce heat and carefully add chicken to the skillet. Cook, uncovered, over medium heat about 40 minutes turning occasionally to brown evenly. Drain on paper towels. If desired, serve with bottled hot pepper sauce and garnish with lime wedges.

CHICKEN FRUIT SALAD

(A Make-Ahead Recipe) 2 cups shell macaroni 3 cups cubed cooked chicken (or turkey) 2 Tbsp. onion, finely chopped 1 tsp. salt 1 cups celery, sliced 1 cups seedless green grapes 11 oz. can mandarin oranges, drained cup slivered almonds, toasted 1 cup mayonnaise or Miracle Whip 1 cup whipping cream, whipped

Cook macaroni to desired doneness. Drain and rinse in cold water. In a large bowl, combine all ingredients except whipped cream. Cover and refrigerate 3 hours to blend flavors. Just before serving, fold in whipped cream. Makes 12 cups

CHICKEN ROLL-UPS
2 pkg. crescent rolls 1 chicken, cooked, boned & diced 1 8oz pkg cream cheese, softened 1 small can mushrooms 1 bunch green onions, diced cube butter or margarine Corn flakes, crushed 1 can cream of chicken soup

Mix cream cheese, chicken, mushrooms, and green onions. Put heaping teaspoon in center of crescent roll, fold over and seal edges. Roll in melted butter then corn flakes. Bake at 350 for 20 minutes or until golden. Pour hot soup over and serve.

Health Updates
I stayed in touch with Ed all thru the weekend. As many of you know, his current health status preempted Ed and Vivian from joining us in Lees Summit, much to his disappointment. His doctor has been running many new tests which lead to him telling Ed you definitely DO NOT need this trip this news coming the day before they were to fly out. It has, in addition, kept him away from his computer and his ability to get his monthly report to you thru the newsletter. He asked me to let everyone know how much he missed seeing them and to say he will definitely get back to inserting his remarks in the July NL. All of our thoughts and prayers go out to Ed, as well as our appreciation for doing what he has done to bring our Class back together in such full force now being called the poster Class of LSHS alumni. He has a permanent place in my God Can!

Good news from Ted Atkins on Friday, May 18th. . .

As many of you know I've again been going through chemo treatments for the past 2 months. The first cycle has ended and Wed. I had to have a catscan and blood work at the Hillman Cancer Center. I received a call this morning from the nurse who's been acting as my liaison with the chemo doctors, radiologists, etc. She said she knew I was on pins and needles and she wanted to give me the good news before the weekend. My primary chemo doctor and others involved in the clinical trial I've been going through spent an hour yesterday examining my catscan images. They found absolutely NO PROGRESSION in my tumors and are optimistic things can only get better as the chemo trial moves along this summer. That great new trial drug may be a magic potion for me. I was pretty emotional when I called Karen who's on the road this morning. We both shed a tear as you might imagine. Thank you God for this new blessing. Have a great weekend everyone. I know we will. We'll be planting flowers in Karen's garden and each one will have a special meaning this year. Luv ya all, Ted

Hi to you, buckaroos... Karen and I are driving to Clearwater, FL, leaving Thurs. 6/7 for 10 days. Gonna
stay with her son and family. He's on the Clearwater police force. Really looking forward to it. Going thru Hilton Head to stay overnight with my former morning radio host at WTAE who's retired there. We've remained very close friends. In Florida we're going to kick some real estate tires. Would love a condo for the winter months and perhaps to permanently live there one day. They say that real estate values drop about 10 grand for every mile you're further from the beach. If that's true we'll be looking about 30 miles out. I guess if you get far enough away the condos are free. A real treat for me. For years I've been trying to get Karen to take a train trip with me. Well, finally... Coming home from Florida we'll drive over to Orlando (about an hour) and load up our car on the Auto Train. We'll have a small roomette with 2 small beds and 2 white linen, deluxe meals included. There's a lounge car with piano player and bartender. Pass the Jack, Mack. Leave at 4 pm and arrive near DC at 7:30 the next morning. We'll be home by noon or so. We save on gas, hotel and meals (about $225). Total cost for both of us and the car is $440, (but really only $215 after the savings). Can't beat it. All Pittsburgh has been talking about is the Penn State scandal but yesterday we were offered up a change of pace. Some street in the South Hills was having some early morning painting done, laying double yellow lines down the middle. An hour later Public Works fired up their grinding machines and tore up the entire street for resurfacing. Sad for the waste but funny all the same. Hellooo...anybody in charge over there? Our tax dollars at work, huh? Still in the clinical chemo trial. Our Florida run happens to be an off week. So far so good. Some days worse than others, though, and often severe night sweats but, all in all, I'm still here considering the alternative. Just trying to put on some weight. I weigh less now than I did at THE LSHS where I was valedictorian, football captain, homecoming king, head Angel, and all-around good guy, loved by teachers and admired by all ('cept for that guy who beat the hell out of me one time). Margaret (Davis) Offen sends us a message . . . Oh what a good time at the GTG the class of 57 had Friday and Saturday nights to celebrate our 55th reunion and also the Golden Reunion on Sunday. It was so good to see everyone and to know we are still hanging around. Was good to see upper classmates as well as lower classmates Sunday. I hope everyone had a good time both Friday and Saturday. Want to thank Roy Hatfield for letting us have the GTG Friday night at his home and also for getting us a place for Saturday night at the Argyle Room at Lakewood. Hope next time we have a GTG that our leader will be able to come and enjoy all the fun, etc. Hope he gets to feeling better. Marilyn said she would like to have something about memories we had back in the days. I have a lot of them but will start off with this one:

My first day at LSHS, was the scariest day of my life. I knew no one and in time I did make friends. The one person that came to my rescue that first day was Rena Shewmaker (Harold Shewmaker's sister). She probably doesn't even remember that but I sure do. Then my locker partner was Virginia Stewart and history was made!!!! We became the best of friends until the day she passed away. I still miss her. This was the beginning of many memories about my time at LSHS and will elaborate more in the months to come. I do believe, though, that those were the best days of our lives whether we realized it or not at the time. Again, thanks Roy for your hospitality Friday night and thanks again for everyone that came to the GTG. May we have many more. Margaret And we want to thank you too, Margaret, for all your efforts in making Fri & Sat nites happen for us! Heres a few comments that were posted on Facebook after the fun Reunion weekend . . .
Marilyn Pruyn: Had a great turnout for the LSHS Golden 50 Reunion yesterday! Great fun! Please put June 8, 2014 on your calendar for the next one. We will be inducting the classes of 1963 and 1964!! Hope to see you there! Margaret Offen: Had a great weekend with the Golden Reunion and the class of 1957 55th reunion. Had a great time both Friday and Saturday nights. Was good to see everyone and to see the ones at the Golden Reunion also. The food was great, especially the cinnamon rolls. Hope to see the same ones at the 2014 reunion. Kathy Winstead Knoche: Just spent a great weekend at the LSHS reunion with my wonderful friends!

I received a nice thank you note in the mail from our 2012 Scholarship recipient, Dakota Lee Ewigman, to pass on. It reads LSHS Class of 1957, thank you for your support of my academic endeavors. Dakota Ewigman As I said before, a truly awesome guy!

News and World Report for the third time in three years! LSHS was recognized at the silver medalist level for 2012 versus the bronze level in previous years. Chad Hertzog, assistant principal at Lees Summit High School, was recognized by the Greater Kansas City Principals Association this spring. Mr. Hertzog was named the 2012-13 Assistant Principal of the Year by the association. He is also one of eight candidates for the Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals Assistant Principal of the Year. When Principal John Faulkenberry is unavailable, Chad welcomes and assists us in preparation for our Scholarship award ceremony each April. In my opinion, hes very deserving of this award. LSHS is lucky to have him.

Blood Clots/Stroke - They Now Have a Fourth Indicator, the Tongue STROKE: Remember the 1st Three Letters..... S. T. R.
During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) ...she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening. Jane's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital (at 6:00 PM Jane passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be with us today. Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead. A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough. RECOGNIZING A STROKE Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S *Ask the individual to SMILE. T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
If he or she has trouble with any ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue

Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to stick out their tongue; if the tongue is 'crooked' . . . if it goes to one side or the other . . . that is also an indication of a stroke.

Missing Lee's Summit Fire Bell

Lees Summit Tribune May 19, 2012 Before the days of mass communication, cell phones and the internet a towns Fire Bell served as a major means of communication. It may have announced a birth or death, a local event, a call to worship, or even the end of a war. Clocks were not common place in the 1800s and the bell was often rung at noon or other points in time during the day. In the mid 1900s and even later, the noon bell was often replaced with a noon whistle. While the bell may have had a variety of uses, its primary role was to notify the community and consequently the volunteer fire fighters of a fire. Photos show the Lees Summit Fire Bell in 1909 hanging in a tower in front of the train depot on Main Street. In 1974 a plaque was placed along side the bell which by that time was resting on the ground before the Depot. But when the City of Lee's Summit moved into the Depot the bell was presumably put somewhere for safe keeping. Where that may be is unknown to the Lee's Summit Fire Department, or members of the IAFF Local 2195. Someone out there knows what happened to the bell and has no idea that it is lost. SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE REPORT While we were all in Lees Summit, on Saturday morning our Class Scholarship Committee (Harold Shewmaker, Garry Garrison, Terry Reynolds, Mary Ann Whiting Morie, Mary Jayne Cooper Williamson, and Marilyn Prewitt Williams) met at LSHS to discuss future fundraising plans to increase our Fund. Garry and Harold, the day before, had a conference call with Ed and gave us the following report: the current balance in our Memorial Scholarship Fund is $38,000 plus we have given out $8,500 in scholarships over the past 8 years. Analyzing the contributions, 53% have been donated by classmates of 1957 and 47% from other sources. We have set an interim goal to achieve a balance of $50,000 by the end of this year, which means we have a goal of adding $12,000 in 2012! Another goal of the Committee is to get 100% participation from our Classmates of 1957. Please take time to read the following page closely and consider sending in your contribution for 2012. There is no amount too small or too large. If you can send only $1 right now, we will still count you in the 100% goal. I had a boss when I worked in the Development Office at UMR that told people dont give til it hurts; give until it feels good! Ill always remember that!

LSHS Paul D. Coverdell Class of 1957 Memorial Scholarship Fund In 2005 YOUR Class of 1957 established a memorial scholarship fund within the Lees Summit Educational Foundation, remembering and honoring our fellow classmates that passed before us. We included in the name of the Fund the name of Paul D. Coverdell, a 57 classmate that was, during his lifetime, very significant in promoting education throughout the U.S. and the World. More than likely you have seen on your IRS tax form 1040 the deduction opportunity offered by the Coverdell Educational Savings Account this was made possible through the efforts of our friend, Paul Coverdell, allowing parents to save for their childrens college expenses. Also, while Director of the Peace Corps, Paul established the World Wise Schools program which links students in the U.S. with Peace Corps volunteers serving around the World. This program continues to grow with volunteers working with more than 7,000 teachers across the U.S. Since we, as students of LSHS, started Paul out in his political career by electing him President of our Student Council for the school year 1956-57, it seemed appropriate for us to add his name to that of our Class Memorial Scholarship, helping to assist graduating students of LSHS in continuing their education . However, this Fund is our means of memorializing our Class as a whole and continuing to have the Class of 1957 known as the outstanding group it was and is and will continue to be. Your Scholarship Committee hopes you will join us in stimulating interest in what we are doing and do what you can to help us meet our goals. Our current goal is to raise . . .

Still another Prewitt family enterprise has started up. My daughter, Kelly, has gone back to selling Tupperware. She did this back when her kids were babies and was very successful at it, because she gives great customer service; she even earned the use of a Tupperware Chevy van back then! I havent heard of Tupperware around for a long time; guess just didnt have any consultants around me. Anyway, they do still have parties, but also each consultant has a website and you can view the catalog and purchase online. If you are as fond of Tupperware as I am, go check out the new stuff on Kellys website www.my.tupperware.com/kellyjhall The consultants are in a special double-points challenge thru the month of June; but all orders are appreciated any time. Previously Ive mentioned my sister Georgeannes daughters website, Margarets sons fencing company, and now my daughter Kellys Tupperware website. If any other Classmates have family businesses going, please send me information. I dont charge for advertising and we need to do what we can to help these kids that WANT the work successful! AND, as Margaret mentioned above, Id like to start a new segment of our NL and call it Down Memory Lane but I need some (or ALL) of you to send me some of your memories.
