Building Background Knowledge Give students two to three minutes to think about the challenges of starting a new school year. Share out/chart answers. Give students two minutes to think about what they can do to meet those challenges and ensure that the new school year gets off to a good start. Share out/chart answers. Tell students that, as we read, we can add information to the chart. Understood Betsy Read Understood Betsy stopping to summarize and ask questions about the key vocabulary words o Use examinations to practice finding smaller words within larger words o Use stump to practice context clues Add vocabulary to word wall with student generated definitions Have students use details from the story to describe Betsy and her Cousin Ann Concluding question: What was the challenge that Besty faced in school? What was her Cousin Anns suggestion for overcoming it?
