Overview & Purpose Lesson 1 of Unit on challenges students face in school (using the text Frindle)

Education Standards Addressed Grade 5 Speaking and Listening -Summarize a written text aloud or information presented in diverse media and formats including visually, quantitatively, and orally. Grade 5 Literature -Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text. Grade 5 Vocabulary Acquisition and Use Recognize and explain the meaning of common idioms, adages, and proverbs

Lesson Procedures

Building Background Knowledge Give students two to three minutes to think about the challenges of starting a new school year. Share out/chart answers. Give students two minutes to think about what they can do to meet those challenges and ensure that the new school year gets off to a good start. Share out/chart answers. Tell students that, as we read, we can add information to the chart. Understood Betsy Read Understood Betsy stopping to summarize and ask questions about the key vocabulary words o Use examinations to practice finding smaller words within larger words o Use stump to practice context clues Add vocabulary to word wall with student generated definitions Have students use details from the story to describe Betsy and her Cousin Ann Concluding question: What was the challenge that Besty faced in school? What was her Cousin Anns suggestion for overcoming it? (as an exit ticket) Additional understandings from BBK talk and chart Oral summaries during reading Take exit tickets before guided reading Additional Notes Add ideas from Understood Betsy to the idea map of challenges faced in school
