Fastest-groWing CHURCHES IN AMERICA

To pull together this years listings of Americas Largest and Fastest-Growing Churches, we turned once again to missiologist and Outreach contributing editor Ed Stetzer and his team at LifeWay Research. (You can read his impressions in the full Outreach 100 special issuesee page 16 of this document for ordering information or click here. In Stetzers article he underscores four trends shaping Outreach 100 churches: the ongoing challenge of leadership development, the continuing rise of multisite strategy, the push to be smaller even as the church grows, and a passion to connect with and care for the community the church calls home.) In preparation for this annual report, we contacted churches and ran ads soliciting participation from more than 25,000 churches. They were invited by fax, email, letter, phone and certified mail. The listings are based on February and March weekend attendance averages, not membership. The Largest list includes churches of more than 5,994. The Fastest-Growing list includes churches with attendance greater than 1,000, a numerical gain of 249 or more, and a percentage gain of at least 6.5 percent. Some churches chose not to respond to multiple interview requests, for various reasons. A few did not want to reveal attendance data; others simply could not find the time to participate. A couple large churches chose not to participate this year because these lists do not include online worship attendancea tricky metric until a standard measure emerges. And there are those who were concerned that this sort of survey promotes a numbers-based mentality above mission. With that in mind, note that The Outreach 100 is not a comprehensive and exhaustive list. It is based on a self-reported survey, not an independent investigation. Although we went to great lengths to confirm data, the information is reported by pastors, staff or church officers, and as such, reflects their perceptionstheir churches as they see them. Ultimately, though, The Outreach 100 is not so much about numbers as it is the individuals those numbers representpeople who have found hope in Christ, and the churches pointing them to Him. If we glean insight from those churches and catch something of their passion for outreach, the Outreach 100 will have fulfilled its purpose. This document presents only the listings of Americas Largest and FastestGrowing Churches.
