North Country Wild Care is a non-profit organization that oversees the rehabilitation of sick, injured or orphaned wild animals. Staff members promote education and train volunteers in eleven North Country counties, including Washington, Saratoga, and Warren. The program includes a discussion of the organizations mission and a live animal presentation. This event will be held at the East Hebron Presbyterian Church, 6559 NYS Route 22 in Hebron, Washington County at 7:00 P.M. The public is invited to attend. TOUR ROGERS ISLAND IN FORT EDWARD-Enjoy a walking tour of Rogers Island in Fort Edward and view the many exhibits in the Visitors Center on Thursday, June 28, at 7 pm. This event, open to the public free of charge, is hosted by the Old Saratoga Historical Association. Exhibits at the Visitors Center, opened in 2001, highlight the history of the Fort Edward area from the earliest Native Americans through the Revolutionary War. According to the Rogers Island website, Fort Edward and adjacent Rogers Island was once the third largest city in colonial North America. The site continues, The history that was made from this place at the bend in the Hudson River in the 1750s would lay the foundations for the nation that would be born two decades later. There are picnic tables for those who would like to enjoy supper at the Visitors Center before the 7 pm tour begins. Sturdy shoes are advised for the walking tour of the island. Rogers Island is just off Route 197 (Bridge Street) between the two bridges just west of Route 4. Kenyon Hill Farm is located in the Town of Jackson just outside of the hamlet of Shushan. It has 400 milking cows and over 400 head of young stock, half of which are housed in Shushan at the Klein Farm. A total of 1000 acres are used for crops that include corn, haylage, shelled corn, straw and dry hay. The cows are housed in a new barn that was built in 2009 where cow comfort is the main focus. The cows are currently averaging 86 pounds of milk per cow. Breeding high quality Holsteins and producing high quality milk are priorities of this farm. Michael & Donna Nolan started Kenyon Hill Farm in 1976. The farm is currently run by Mike, Donna and 2 of their sons: Curtis, his wife Jackie and two sons Lucas & Landon; Shane & his wife Jocelyn. The Nolans have 2 other children: Courtney who is married to Jackson dairy farmer Gary Bubby Carlton and Ryan who operates harvesting equipment based out of Nebraska. Their milk is shipped to Agri-Mark Inc. where they have won numerous quality awards. Agri-Mark produces Cabot and McCadam cheese products. Saratoga Countys 17th Annual Sundae on the Farm will be held on Sunday June 17 at Eildon Tweed Farm 1253 Eastern Avenue in the Town of Charlton.
The annual event, taking place from 12:00 pm through 4:00 pm, showcases the breadth and significance of agriculture in Saratoga County and is enjoyed by approximately 2,500 visitors each year. The popular farm tour and festival has also been held in the towns of Northumberland and Saratoga. Sundae on the Farm is fun and educational for the whole family a perfect way to spend Fathers Day Sunday together. Free events include guided tours of the dairy farm, childrens activities, spelling bee and ice cream eating contest, farm animals to see, horse-drawn wagon rides, live music, agricultural exhibits, and demonstrations by chefs featuring local farm products. Fifty South in Ballston Spa, and the Cock n Bull Restaurant in Galway, are two participating restaurants which regularly use locally produced ingredients. Plenty of food is served at Sundae on the Farm including: hotdogs, hamburgers, sausage & peppers, Stewarts Ice Cream with Sundaes Best Hot Fudge, strawberries or maple topping, and Pie a la mode featuring homemade pies from Smiths Orchard Bake Shop. Take home the bounty of Saratoga County with products from a Farmers Market on-site. Parking is plentiful and several trams (with farm-savvy hosts on board for questions and answers) will transport visitors between the parking area and the farm. Saratoga Countys Sundae on the Farm, a successful educational effort to promote local agriculture, has become a model emulated by many other counties. The event is organized by the Saratoga County Agricultural Promotion Committee and sponsored by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Saratoga County, American Farmland Trust, Saratoga County Farm Bureau, and the Town of Charlton with support from the Saratoga County Agricultural and Farmland Protection Board.
